2) Some people have March Madness. I now have the Hot & Vintage Movie Women tournament.
One of the best parts of the tournament (you may remember that Toshiro Mifune won the male matchup) is people reblogging and submitting pictures, further bio information, and personal anecdotes--that sense of the Tumblr collective scrapping for the pure love of their blorbos. I love Edwige Fenech’s eyes and her iconic eyeliner, and I had to step in when she went up against powerhouse Julie Andrews with only one small picture. No, I’m not letting Edwige go out like that. She won’t win, but the people must make their choice knowingly.
I also posted some pictures for Lady Tsen Mei, because I’d actually never heard of her and was curious. Also, because she’s going up against Musidora and that’s not an easy row to hoe, either. If you see matchups like that, where hotvintagepoll didn’t receive much to post about an actress--appealing to the people with a good picspam in the reblogs is where the fun comes in.
Bear in mind that running the tournament is an INCREDIBLE amount of work; this was Friday alone. Like, I don’t know the person who’s running this, but it couldn’t be me. They’re working with what they were sent, and here’s how we can be the propaganda we want to see in the world. I will jump in as necessary when Ava Gardner, Gene Tierney, Norma Shearer, Paulette Goddard, and (on my mom’s behalf) Julie Christie show up. But there’s 512 contenders, and it’s going to be a hard fight.
(I am now reblogging the polls at only one an hour, and when I fall behind, that just means that people who missed them can catch up. Each poll lasts a week, after all.)

Cat’s Out of the Bag
Minecraft Streamer AU
Okay so I’ve had this thought brewing for a bit, but it’s about irl Serennedy vs their SMP characters. It’s about their relationship in and out of the Minecraft roleplay. It’s a lot so I’ll put it under the cut.
If they’re following the plot of the RE4 remake (with plenty of changes to make it fit Minecraft), then they’re clearly not together as a couple. But, for all the same reasons that we ship them, they’ve got those little moments interspersed in the roleplay and their fans pick up on them, too. It’s subtle enough not to out them, but it’s also subtle enough for it to be dismissed as being close friends (which they are; they’re dating but they’re also each other’s best friends).
So that kind of brought me to their shipping boundaries that I’ve posted elsewhere. Luis is chill with being shipped with other characters as long as the CC is also fine with it, but there’s kind of an exception with Leon. Luis is the captain of the Serennedy fanbase even though Leon has never outright stated his shipping boundaries. He never addresses it. Naturally there’s a divide in the fandom over whether or not it’s okay to ship Serennedy because, on the one hand, Luis is incredibly supportive of it, but on the other hand, Leon hasn’t ever said anything about it. It’s unclear what his thoughts are about it, but Luis is his best friend and encourages it, so it’s probably fine, right? There’s a lot of discourse over this.
It’s not like Luis and Leon are hiding their relationship on purpose though. It’s just nobody’s business. If they come out, they come out, but it’s not a huge deal. Besides, focusing on them as strangers developing a sort of friendship is ideal for the story they’re trying to tell. They reason it would make for a more compelling narrative if they’re not sure where they stand with each other because of their pasts instead of having them be together from the start. It makes for great storytelling getting to establish this sense of unease and distrust that develops into total trust after they open up to each other.
Then there’s also the fact that nobody knows they’re living together. They were roommates before they were together, so they each have their own rooms. They stream in their own spaces and don’t interrupt each other when they’re doing their own things, so nobody knows that they’re living together– which brings me to what I’ve been thinking about for a couple days now.
The news that Serennedy is, in fact, canon between the two actual streamers and that they live together doesn’t come out until well into the RE SMP’s story. It doesn’t happen until Luis’s character is killed off.
Luis is upset about his character dying, even if he did propose the idea himself. He wrote his way out of the SMP because he’s in grad school and his workload has started to pick up tremendously. He loved his time on the RE SMP, but he knew he couldn’t devote as much time as he wanted into it with his classwork piling up, so he made the decision to kill off his character. He didn’t realise how bummed out he would be about it until the day of. He finishes his stream, but he’s so sad over the end of his character, so he goes into Leon’s room while he’s still streaming. The chat goes wild. They realise Luis and Leon live together.
Luis walks over to him and asks to be comforted, so he sits on his lap and hugs him while Leon finishes up his stream. Again, the chat is going crazy. Serennedy is trending on Twitter. But that’s just a hug! It’s still totally friendly! Totally platonic! Leon pecks Luis on the lips because he knows he’s sad. That’s the end of the shipping discourse. People who thought they were queerbaiting are losing their shit. It’s like Nov 5th, 2020 for the Hellers except it’s actually clearly reciprocated. Leon ends stream like nothing’s happening. Ashley calls him to ask if everything’s okay because outing themselves like that was an insane move, but she’s happy for them and feels relieved that she doesn’t have to worry about slipping up and accidentally outing them herself.
The craze goes on for like a week and then everyone accepts it as the new normal. For a while nobody can get the Serennedy shippers to shut up about being right about them. Of course there are haters that drop the RE SMP, but they’re a minority and it’s not really noticeable when they leave.
This is subject to change as I continue to develop the AU, but I like this as the reveal. Sorry for rambling. I’m just really into this AU rn

The Writing Revolution...I can't in good conscience recommend it unless you also happen to find yourself as a teacher trying to capture teenagers' imaginations and get them to produce complete sentences! Hahahaha. Miserable toil.

Ooh, this one's easy--The Little Mermaid!! I have seen it with my family twice and then with my friends once. (I felt a little freer to lust after Prince Eric when my husband and two children weren't sitting there with me...)

These days, some form of athleisure. During the school year, I've been told my teacher style is "Jessica Day if she didn't care so much" and...that about sums it up.

Absolutely not. I wanted to be a lawyer my entire life. My undergrad was pre-law and then life had other plans for me and now I'm teaching 8th grade American History. And LOVING IT. I start grad school in the fall and I'll be getting my Principal's Certification with that, so I suppose I'm in this education world for the long haul.

The weather recently! It was supposed to rain the past couple weeks and we've not gotten much more than a few minutes of sprinkling. I looooove rainy days, so that's bummed me out quite a bit.

I'm excellent at whistling. It's completely useless, but I'll get compared to a Disney princess occasionally, so I guess that's something.

and well…. attitudes towards mutants are changing. she lets him in on her little m-word secret, and everything's peachy keen- till she gets an internship and he doesn't.
that's when he lets slip to their school that she's a big bad. she's kicked out of the university, the government's on her ass, and it's on top of the news cycle for a week.
she spins it as best as she can; a dumb, silly girl who was of course getting around to registering when questioned by the relevant authorities--- it's not her fault she found out during finals season! there's interest in the case, and she capitalises off it in hopes the attention will mean lesser repercussions. she's just a girl who wanted to live a quiet normal life like everyone else, ok? :(

So update: my gram is doing waaaaay better. things are returning to a weird semblance of normal. nothing is normal, but its ...closer than it has been. I am managing to not just ... sleep or zone out for hours on end at the end of the day. I have cider’s ashes, and his stuff has been mostly cleaned up. I’ve been forcing my cat to spend time with me as a way of dealing with his absence. Its not really working, but i’ve gotten some cute cat pics ( cat tax )
now for tumblr, I don’t know yet my plan 100%. but i do know:
Double-knots is gonna get a rework, and will probably move to a new thing. same url, but it’ll be fresh and new and new icon, graphics, etc
Speed: I’m still gonna be slow as fuck because grad school, babysitting, & care giving are still things. just, ya know, less than it was.
New blog? I am considering making a side blog to double-knots that’ll focus fully on my original characters from my original world :)
Alice is still gonna be alice. She’s going to be the most active out of all of my blogs for now. Since ,,, all her shit is done, and everyone likes her xD

What’s something you’re good at vs. something you’re bad at? I’m good at crafts! I’ve got a decent amount of experience with needlework and I’ve been thinking I want to branch out into something that’s more functional (like crocheting or sewing) compared to purely artistic.
I’m bad at reaching out of my comfort zone. I feel like life is already hard enough in the day-to-day, so finding the motivation to do something new and different is hard. I need a friend who will drag me out :(

Are you religious? Kind of? My cultural roots are very deep and my religion is all tied up in that. But my health is bad, I regularly get fierce pains, and I’ve been depressed for like ten years now. Not to say that you CAN’T have faith coexisting with all those things, but I’m just exhausted. It’s not for me. (Or at least, it’s not for the me that exists right now. I suppose that could change in the future)

10. What are your hobbies? sleeping, smoking pot, disassociating, and playing a LOT of SWTOR. i also used to do ceramics very often but i sadly don't have the resources to be doing that right now :-(

12. What sports do you play/have played? i played tee-ball for a year but i hated it so i switched to soccer. i miss it greatly, it was an amazing way to use my anger for good

14. Favorite subject in school? ceramics class was my all time favorite, but i was always good in english class as well

Dream job? ideally i'd open up my own coffee and bagel shop in the city, but if i had the money i'd maybe go through grad school to become an art therapist! i'd save up and get a ceramic studio and build a little office off of it, that way my clients could choose between talk vs art therapy, and have a choice of environment !

So, making a post about this to make it feel more real.
Life update: I’m dropping out of my M.A. in May of this year. I’m going to move back to the midwest, take a year to work a job and apply to a post-bacc for a certificate in museum studies, and try and work in preservation and outreach.
This is actually a good thing for me. I’ve been learning a lot in my grad school adventures, but one of the things I’ve learned is that academia isn’t a life I want permanently, that my passion for old things, history, beautiful things, etc., isn’t flourishing in this path, and I as a person am not doing what I think will ultimately make me happy.
As I’ve continued counseling and antidepressants, I’ve realized I used to only think I was good for “being smart” and that this was the only way to work with things I love. But now that my self worth is better, my baseline mood and anxiety levels are more stable, that’s not true, and this is neither my only path, nor my best one.
I’m actually really excited. I’ll be closer to my partner and friends, I’ll be able to work with things I’m passionate about, and my life won’t be an endless cycle of school years. I’ll be able to have time for creative projects and other hobbies and joys in ways I haven’t and won’t be able to in my current sitiuation.
Honestly, though, I’m proud of myself for doing all of this. Not only was I able to drop everything, move cross-country, deal with my mental health and still make amazing grades, but I had the werewithal to realize that just because I’m good at something (and I am good at academics), that doesn’t mean I have to do that and only that. Soooo it looks like my ‘cat vs grad school tag’ will finally go to rest this May.

As a generalist-dilettante, I somewhat agree, though being a generalist (as opposed to a specialist) doesn’t require having what Girard has, which is one totalizing theory. I just can’t quite get as Girard-pilled as everyone else now seems to be, though I tried. Maybe it’s because everybody’s (apparently) converting to Catholicism these days, whereas I was raised that way and don’t find the basic concept all that novel. His big idea seems half a truism and half a wild exaggeration to me. As Elif Batuman, reflecting on grad school at Girard central, wrote in The Possessed:
Furthermore, the entire Girardian enterprise began to strike me as hypocritical. If Girard was right about the human condition, the only appropriate course of action was to stop what we were doing, all of us, right now. If novels were really about what he said they were about, then their production should cease. All we really needed was one novel, and we would all read it and realize, like St. Augustine, that the basic premises of literary narrative—love and ambition—could bring only misery. Renouncing our desires, we would give ourselves up to spiritual contemplation.
But Girard is an authentic hedgehog in Berlin’s sense:
The title is a reference to a fragment attributed to the Ancient Greek poet Archilochus: πόλλ' οἶδ' ἀλώπηξ, ἀλλ' ἐχῖνος ἓν μέγα (“a fox knows many things, but a hedgehog knows one big thing”). In Erasmus’s Adagia from 1500, the expression is recorded as Multa novit vulpes, verum echinus unum magnum. (The fable of The Fox and the Cat embodies the same idea.)
Berlin expands upon this idea to divide writers and thinkers into two categories: hedgehogs, who view the world through the lens of a single defining idea (examples given include Plato, Lucretius, Dante Alighieri, Blaise Pascal, Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Friedrich Nietzsche, Henrik Ibsen, Marcel Proust and Fernand Braudel), and foxes, who draw on a wide variety of experiences and for whom the world cannot be boiled down to a single idea (examples given include Herodotus, Aristotle, Desiderius Erasmus, William Shakespeare, Michel de Montaigne, Molière, Johann Wolfgang Goethe, Aleksandr Pushkin, Honoré de Balzac, James Joyce and Philip Warren Anderson).
Turning to Leo Tolstoy, Berlin contends that at first glance, Tolstoy escapes definition into one of the two groups. He postulates that while Tolstoy's talents are those of a fox, his beliefs are that one ought to be a hedgehog and so Tolstoy's own voluminous assessments of his own work are misleading.
This is a fun parlor game, as Berlin intended, and any given figure will be closer either to the hedgehog or fox ends of the spectrum, but almost every major writer, artist, and thinker can, it seems to me, be evaluated as Berlin evaluates Tolstoy.
Greatness may even be nothing more or less than the ability to transcend, to synthesize, this polarity. In postscript: I have never found a satisfactory explanation of the fox-hedgehog metaphor’s literal level. In what sense does a real-life fox know many little things, while a real-life hedgehog knows one big thing? Aesop’s fable doesn’t clarify the question. Is it because the proverbially sly fox has many feints and tactics while the hedgehog has just the one defense? But this doesn’t account for little vs. big knowledge, nor would I say it pertains to knowledge per se at all. Please feel free to send an answer!

well, i haven’t published any fic yet, so i don’t have any for fic, but i can answer this for original work! when i was in grad school, i had an original fiction piece accepted into a creative writing conference. i didn’t get a whole lot of feedback from attendees of the event itself, but my graduate advisor said some really kind things about it before i submitted it, and she’s the kind of person who is very effusive with her compliments, so while it was sort of overwhelming, it was so heartwarming ;-; i don’t remember her exact comments anymore because it’s been...a while D: but they got me through the mortification of reading my work in front of other people.

FIRST OFF, i would just like to say: i said last episode that i did not trust the school taking the students’ items was WEIRD and UNTRUSTWORTHY and someone was like “but it’s the school’s money!” but i am calling this a “ha! told you!” moment bc now fucking higglemas used the glasses and knows about the portal!!!

here’s my theory: leon Knows something is going on with the school and he went to the heroic oversight guild with it, and higglemas took him out for it bc the h.o.g is the only thing that can deem heroes/villains evil and, if word gets out that hieroymous and higglemas are doing some shady stuff, they can lose their titles and rank and all the power they have accumulated for centuries. i started this episode being like "i dont trust hieronymous for shit but higgs is cool" and now i don't fucking trust either!!!!
also, my overall point: i will talk abt it until i run out of air that graduation’s main theme is “everything is not what it appears” and i think that is the most important thing to remember
as of rn, my top 5 is: fitzroy, argo, jackle, buck, and rainer
and i also have some theories and i am recording them also here:
