Cato the Younger, early days.
he is. a weird guy. I've always read about him in association to brutus, but ever since kicking it back a generation, I've been reading more about him and I gotta say: eerie! usually I'd go, oh necromancy. but this is more like sticking your tongue into the intercostal space of a thing that should've decayed a long time ago and wearing it's death mask. arguably worse, because doing that is like tapping open an entombed space that will never be closed.
eventually he'll look less like an old design I had for brutus (or. hghg. lucius junius brutus, because I realized after I finished this that this is a parallel composition to when I drew lucius, only no dead sons) as I draw him more, but. ehguh. had some thoughts! wanted to excise them from my mind so I can go to sleep!! what a guy!

The Ultramarines are currently arguing over whether to wear their helmets or not. The arguments boil down to:
We just got attacked by a battlesuit that was invisible to electronic sensors but not to the naked eye, so we should leave our helmets off in case another battlesuit just like it attacks us.
HOW DARE YOU QUESTION THE BLESSED WISDOM OF OUR LORD AND GENESIRE ROBOUTE GUILLIMAN WHO SAID WE SHOULD WEAR OUR HELMETS IN BATTLE!
Literally no one has contemplated what I like to call Option C:
Most of us should wear our helmets, both for safety reasons and for the built-in sensors. However, several men on the perimeter should keep their helms off, in case we're attacked by more enemies that are invisible to sensors.
Pretty sure I can hear Guilliman rolling in his grave chair from here.

ok... so i understand that thg fans are not exactly cato stans... but like, his last moments (in the movies) were like so painful... "one last kill. it's all i know how to do" hurt so much. like, they're all just kids sent to die and kill each other and cato and all the other tributes were all KIDS, i can't stress it enough. i think cato could've had a very interesting story if he was the main character... now i need a book about cato's life pls

Pet loss below the cut.
Cato was my cat. That's the long and short of it.
From the first night I had him when he curled up against my neck to fall asleep with me, to his final night when he curled up on my chest to try and comfort me, there is not a single day I've been home that I haven't had my kitten chow with me. He was my tiny shadow, always trotting along after me or singing at me from around the house with that long Siamese wail or bringing me scores of socks he hid god knows where (although once he brought me an entire umbrella instead, which he was understandably proud of). He was by my pillow every night cuddled up against my arm, and we fit together like two puzzle pieces, like that little crook in my arm was designed for him, for his exact shape and size. He was with me through my health issues, through high school and college, through moving states, through covid, through tears, through the loss of other pets. He was there as I really learned to write, and there is not a single chapter of TRT that was written without his presence for at least a section of it even if it meant I had to stop editing or writing for a bit and just stare at the words instead because he wanted to be held NOW. And he even managed to hold off the cancer just long enough to walk with me through mom's hospital stay and her return home. I was his person, and he was my soul cat, a piece of me.
I was so torn last night. He was clearly in pain, dehydrated, wobbly, confused and restless, and couldn't get to the litter box. It had been really clear this week the moment was coming, that the cancer was going to take him soon. I'd had this big plan, to have it all happen at home in peace. He hated the vet, hated the stress, but it happened so fast, and I just... knew he couldn't wait for the vet's office to open so she could come here. He'd chosen his time and it was now.
I held him at the emergency vet when they gave him the sedative. I managed to choke out that silly singing tone that always made him happy, as I called him every last nickname he knew: my Cato-wato kitten chow, my Cato kins, my little Mr. meow meow, my sweet happy baby kitty. I made sure all he could see with those big beautiful blue eyes of his was me, as I petted his soft little ears and scratched his neck just the way he liked. And he actually managed to purr for me. He purred as he slipped away and the lights went out, and it was the last sound I ever got to hear from him.
I already miss you so, so much, my sweet old kitty, my Cato kitten chow. I'm sorry it couldn't be at home. But thank you for purring for me. Thank you for spending your journey with me. Thank you for the love you gave me. Thank you for the big meows and the headbonks and perching on my shoulder to interrupt with a breaking news story of Meow Meow. Thank you for the stealing of hundreds of my socks over 16 years and the way you always wanted to sit on me regardless of convenience or your own comfort. Thank you for letting me scoop you up for head smoochies, guarding me from nightmares, and solemnly supervising over 150 chapters of TRT. My soul cat, my baby kitty, my lovebug. I will always love and miss you. And one day I'll see you again.

I think if you dropped Cato the Elder into the middle of a "make love not war" hippie march he'd literally explode.

i love katniss's absurd observations of other people that she doesn't care about. she is absolutely a kind and empathetic individual, there is no doubt, and extends mercy towards people she dislikes/outright hates but if she can't remember your name because you haven't made an impression she will literally just be like "oh yeah sly cunning girl from district five. foxface. district six tributes that are clearly addicts. the morphlings. monstrous boy from district two" etc etc and it's. extremely funny

Every single character I have ever obsessed over falls into one of four categories:
Kid with no one in his corner who's used to looking after himself realises that (often despite his best efforts) people actually care about him and he has a support system.
Older brother type vibes who is the comic relief and painted as dumb or clueless but actually has deep insecurities and is so so smart in other ways and has a fiercely protective streak.
Young (though not always) woman who has been through a rough time and has Trauma but is still strong and refuses to let her past define her and makes an effort to be kind. (this character tends to become part of my soul)
Loser man become dad.
Also bonus points to trope voted Most Relatable but is never my favourite character:
5. Kid who has had a reasonably trauma-less life compared to friends and feels a bit like a sidekick and maybe doesn't consider their problems worthy when their friends have been through so much more

[Marco Bruto, a tragedy by Antonio Conti, 1744.]
@soldatrose because you liked the messy family themes in Marco Bruto, here is a little translation of the part that made me do a double take.
Porcia.
I myself chose,
I myself prepared the sharp blade
that must save the Latin liberty.
It is the same blade that pierced my father,
and that he sent to me from Africa as a gift,
writing on it, with his own hand, in blood:
"To the wife of Brutus". I often kiss it,
often take it off this image,
in which you see Cato
tear his entrails like a wild beast.

I'm working on more ancient Roman trading cards! However, most of these guys and gals don't have pretty, non-copyrighted portraits I can use. You'd think there'd be more paintings of Clodius shaking his booty in drag, but I haven't found them!
I could adapt art originally intended to portray other Romans, or unspecified Romans, and simply add a clarifying note under the "Read more..." where I cite where the art came from. Since I'm mostly planning to use pre-20th century paintings, I don't think the creators would mind. Plus, some of y'all might discover an artist y'all really like that way.
However, to do that I will still need to find those pieces first. And Wikimedia, while valuable and much-loved, is quite scattered for my purposes. So if y'all know of any good virtual collections of art depicting ancient Romans - ideally old non-copyrighted paintings - let me know! (No AI art or cartoony styles, please. Doesn't fit the old-fashioned aesthetic I'm aiming for.)
