Yeah, I like Catra's design as well. My favorite one has to be her s4 design, I kind of like the fact it calls back to Corrupted Catra in s3. Of course, I hate how sexualized s4 Catra is, but it was neat.

And I'll admit that Catra's "future" design (Adora projecting her future in s5, that is) was cool, too.

Adora definitely uses the Sword to cut up food and shit when she doesn’t need to. It pisses off Glimmer and Bow at first when she tried to cook on a mission and used the sword to chop carrots, celery and onions and they all ended up WAY bigger than they needed to be, but honestly she did get better at it over time. Plus, Light Hope said her movements with the sword became 150% more precise!

She gets pretty into cooking. She’s still awful at baking, always getting distracted and forgetting things in the oven, but cooking is fast and you’re constantly doing something. It’s like a dance, and Adora starts to love it.

Regardless, this isn’t really about Adora’s cooking prowess - this is about how she uses that god damn sword for anything. Oh, need a crowbar? Sword of power. Need a hammer? Sword of power. Need a haircut? Sword of power.

She isn’t even turning the sword into something else, she just uses it as is for whatever she needs and it never breaks. The hammer one was dumb, she just turned her sword and hit the nail with the flat side of the blade, and no chips came to it. It’s stupid and it defies the laws of physics. Catra hates it.

So it came to the surprise of literally no one that when it came time to cut the cake at Catra and Adora’s wedding, out came the Sword of Power.

Adora reached the sword almost to the cake when she saw Catra’s eye roll beside her and drew back. She looked down at Catra in her pretty white suit with gold trim and her black tux shirt. Catra met her stare with confusion; why had she held back?

Adora’s sword was tilted up and she carefully brought it between them. She used her free hand to bring Catra’s hand up to hold the sword, passing it off easily with all the trust in the world. Catra’s eyes widened and she met the blonde’s eyes again. “How about you cut the cake?” She whispered to her new wife.

Catra took Adora’s hand in hers and locked their fingers around the sword. “How about we do it together?” Catra whispered back.

Their hands were shaky and there were unshed tears in both their eyes but the cut was clean and they got their piece without much issue. Catra smiled at her new wife and licked the icing off the sword. As Adora’s eyes went wide she realized that maybe she did like Adora’s sword after all.

Even if it was stupid.

I havent watched Amphibia so I cant say my opinion on her redemption. White, Blue and Yellow, well, at least they have changed and trying to fix what they have done. And is not like Steven forgave them, he still has resentment towards them.

Lilith, I actually think that she was kind of the best, because she wasnt terrible, and makes sense. I do think that they forgave her a bit too fast. But appart from that, it wasnt terrible.

Catra? *scoffs* What redemption arc? She did ONE good thing, she victimized herself, had a haircut and thats it. She didnt actually changed. She didnt realize she did terrible things. Catra only saved Glimmer because she didnt have nothing else to lose. No, she did it cause the situation wasnt favoring her.

Thanks to @spop-romanticizes-abuse for the bingo card! I did Catra, the show's golden child for obvious reasons, they became the writer's precious little meow meow, oversexualized by the fandom, forced into a ship they did not need *cough* Catradora *cough*, why do they never get called out for their shitty actions because they only get called out once by a fucking lizard and they even victim blamed Catra for shadow weaver abusing her?! What!? Wasted potential because they actually could've had a good redemption if more time and care had been put into it, no satisfying conclusion to their arc, I'm sorry but them dating their sister whom they resented for so long is not satisfying, and inconsistent characterization, sometimes they will be a cute little meow meow and sometimes they'll go right back to their horrible selves, never seems to age, unless you considering a different haircut as aging, character development who? They never really change, they just apologize and blush at Adora and stop committing war crimes, but come on is the bar really that low that someone not committing war crimes is huge praise? bad representation because they are an angry, aggressive, Hispanic women who is also nonhuman since they are a catgirl, pretty weird for the only Hispanic character (As far as I know) they even sleep at the foot of Adora's bed like a pet. Putting the de- in development because again, they still treat Adora like shit, they just occasionally blush at her and that makes it ok.

this was produced and came out during the years she went public about losing her fucking mind, so like. everyone had to deal with it in the way they felt was appropriate. i'm not really out to judge the exact timbre of one's response so long as said response does not align with her bigotry, and i sympathize with the petty joy of belittling something owned by somone hateful, especially if that something once meant a lot to you...

i guess i'm just not super comfortable with it because a) you're still picking at a wound even if you end up making funny shapes out of the scabs, b) these hot takes are about general magic-school tropes but often are so specifically about her it feels like we're giving her credit for creating them, and c) owning her like this feels like an opiate when the real issue isn't that her fictional society is founded on 11 year olds taking one uquiz, or that the fake sport she made up is hideously unbalanced, it's that she's...the leader of hate group

(and what Lilith is good at is soothing the pain of others via self-harm! which i think is the point the Helen's-Type-Generator starts emitting confetti and oily black smoke)

Going Forward

yes i liked it yes i know the second season is more heavily serialized yes i will watch that soon

this did make me think about how all seriality in TV these days seem to be about building up to one series-wide showdown as opposed to different seasons having their own mytharcs, but that has less to do with this show specific and more with the death of television as a medium and we ain't got time for that

given how much my exposure to this show beforehand was Lumity (to the point where i wasn't sure there were other characters besides Eda) i'm...kinda surprised at how sparse Amity's presence was in this season. i liked what we did see of her, but i went in expecting a lot more antagonism for a lot longer in that dynamic

but i guess that's tied in with this season not having much in the way of antagonism until the very end, and not-Hordak seems to be the only one actually invested in his whole world order. we don't have any sympathetic true believers, which I assumed would be Lilith and/or Amity? i guess neither Shadow Weaver nor Catra really gave a shit about the Horde's ideology either, but Shadow Weaver remained an unrepentant ball of spite until the end and it didn't really matter that Catra didn't give a shit about the Horde because the Horde was the only thing she knew. in contrast Amity and Lilith's ties to the existing system feel very shallow--in the latter case so much so it kind of boggles my willing suspension of disbelief?

i suppose the next season can change that, i know new characters get introduced so--

I barely engage in SPOP fandom stuff anymore for many reasons but I do enjoy your blog from time to time whenever a thought about how poorly written Catra was enters my head. During the show I kept feeling like I was supposed to pity her, empathise with her and root for her but all I felt was increasing disappointment. She’s got so much potential and I don’t dislike her. I love her character design and the odd moment when she does Cat Things. It’s just…there was absolutely nothing about her relationship with Adora that made me hope they’d end up together. Like for sure LGBTQ+ relationships shouldn’t be sanitized and perfect, but there just wasn’t anything….there? resembling love or support from Catra for most of the show.

On the other hand, what I wasn’t expecting was for Hordak of all people to make me begin to consider to leaving my toxic church and abandoning a lot of very harmful self-beliefs. Something about that moment where he realised nothing he could ever do would be good enough for Horde Prime hit home for me. Didn’t expect that but it’s changed my life for the better, which makes it all the more irritating that the show writers didn’t do a better job with Catra.

Yeah, I'm mostly following like, one or two blogs who post more actively about SPOP (and they're both critical of the show). Honestly, most people I follow on Tumblr don't care about SPOP anymore. I think they all dropped it once season 5 ended.

And same! There are some aspects I still like about Catra, like her design and the Cat Things (I am not immune to cute cat noises), save for some sympathetic moments like the ones with Scorpia. She had so much potential but C//A ruined her completely. If Catra wasn't so dependent on Adora then maybe she could've had a more genuine character development, but she's just stuck as being Adora's possessive and petty girlfriend.

I'm glad Hordak helped you realize that! Although he didn't get more screentime, and the cult trauma ended up being used to make us feel more sorry for Catra than Hordak and the other clones (especially since Wrong Hordak is a joke the entire time), I agree that his arc ended up being more compelling than Catra's. I honestly wish Hordak and Horde Prime's dynamic was shown more often, or earlier on. I only remember it being introduced in season 3 and they don't talk about it that much later on (correct me if I'm wrong). But it did give us an insight to Hordak and I thought it was pretty interesting. It's too bad Horde Prime only officially appeared in the season 4 finale, so he's a rather shallow villain.

It's odd because Hordak has, in theory, less development and screentime in comparison to Catra, but in the end she never actually changes. She just changed sides and not for the right reasons. Catra only joined the Rebellion because she had nowhere else to go. She didn't even save Glimmer for the good reasons, she just did it for Adora. You'd think Catra would learn better after season 4... but she only got a haircut that wasn't even her choice and remained an asshole towards Adora and the princesses. It's such a shame.

Princess Glimmer and the Day of Many Choices: A Tall Slim Woman and a Tall Buff Woman (28/?)

"It can't be!" Glimmer gasped as she and the others stared at the tall figure in front of the Black Garnet.

"Step forth, rats," the tall slim woman by the runestone said with haughty voice and turned around. "I can hear you whisper. Step up and face your better or scurry away."

Glimmer took a tentative step forward eyes huge, tears threatening to emerge at any moment. She stared at the winged woman, dressed in a purple gown and seemingly shining from within.

"…mom?" Glimmer whispered, clearly not believing her eyes.

"No…" Catra whispered in horror. She took a step back, poised to run.

"Queen Angella?" Despara said, horror and remorse written all over her face.

"How is this possible?" Glimmer said, voice shaking.

"Oh, wow, hi!" Scorpia chuckled nervously. "Wow, this is really cool, um, I've heard so much about you - mostly propaganda I suppose, but still. I'm really happy to meet you. Um, but just to be clear, um, that's kinda my runestone you're playing with… not that you can't borrow it, of course, I just thought I would…"

"SILENCE, FOOL!" the tall queen snarled and hurled a ball of lighting towards Scorpia who - in a move that clearly surprised herself - caught it on her claw, where the electricity harmlessly played until it grounded itself.

"MOM! NO!" Glimmer cried. "Scorpia is with us now. She is one of the princess alliance… um, everyone is. The war is over. We won!"

"Silence, I said, you mewling brat," the tall queen snarled, her eyes boring into Glimmer as lasers. "Do not bother me with your games, child."

"…mom!" Glimmer protested, hurt to her core.

"You and your friends play at being princesses while the world is breaking," Angella said with disdain. "Little princesses playing at being queens." She contemplatively looked at the rune stone. "Little princesses playing with dangerous toys."

"Angella…. Queen Angella…" Despara said. "I'm so… I'm sorry… I let you down…"

Angella took a step forward, towering about the crying warlord. Her feature softened and she put a hand on Adora's face.

"Yes, you did," Angella softly said. "But of no fault of your own." She gave Glimmer an unkind glare. "You were given burdens greater than you can carry," Angella went on. "Responsibilities heavier than you should have been asked to shoulder."

As she talked, a red light streamed from her hand and started to engulf Despara.

"Don't you worry," Angella said. "I will take those burdens away. I will not stand aside and watch children with the keys to the cosmos anymore."

Despara cried in anguish as the red lighting tore into her. A moment later Adora - haircut no longer bitchin' - fell forward, hardly conscious, and landed on the floor.

"Just what do you think you're doing?" Catra shouted in fear and anger and rushed up to the sobbing Adora.

"Queen Angella!" Perfuma protested. "I must ask you to step away from my wife's runestone…"

"'Wife'," a mocking voice, deep and hoarse, said as a second figure stepped out from the shadows - a tall, buff woman. "That's rich. The princess of Archnidia rutting with a Plumerian whore."

"Oh, wow, there is no need for…" Scorpia begun, but her voice trailed off as she took in the appearance of the newcomer.

The newcomer held up a claw.

Red lighting played over it.

A simply bitchin' electric guitar chord was heard.

"…mom?" Scorpia whispered.

"Don't worry, daughter," the woman said. "I'll find you a more worthy partner once we have conquered Plumeria for you."

And from her claw shot a stream of red sparks, right at Perfuma.

Instead they’d barely made it to the butcher shop before Bow squinted at both of them with deep suspicion and then a slow growing smirk. A smirk! The gall of that man!

“What?” She’d huffed, exhausted and desperate for whatever cheap cuts he had since they’d run clean out of even salt pork and potted meat a week before.

He only gave a small squeal of excitement.

Catra stared at him trying to make sense of it before looking at Glimmer. They were both a little thinner, scraggly, exhausted, and generally looked like hell. “Archer, what in the hell are you on about?”

It wasn’t until he looked pointedly down that she remembered her and Glimmer were linked arm in arm, something they hadn’t done in public in, well…damn near ten years.

“Fuck you and the horse you rode in on.” Catra barely managed to put a hint of bite into it, flushing as he laughed at her. “I’m getting a haircut, you deal with him.”
