Hi, did u like the gay Netflix She-Ra show?
i watched it a couple years ago w my baby brother and he enjoyed it so i enjoyed the experience of watching it with him. and i'm glad it exists, because its overt queerness is something i'm really glad kids these days have at their disposal. a children's show with a lesbian protagonist is simply not something we had a generation ago, and it's clear that bubbline in adventure time, korrasami in legend of korra, and steven universe's... everything really paved the way for that. now we have shows like she-ra and the owl house and kipo and that new dead end paranormal park series i have yet to see but that chell says she enjoyed. there's still a lot of censorship involved from executives, and unfortunately every speck of queer rep we do see in mainstream children's media still has to be fought for by the creators, and is just as often shut down, but every fight leads to more acceptance down the road, and that road has been unfolding rapidly, considering all the progress made in this landscape only over the course of the past decade.
that said, the show itself didn't really grab me. a lot of elements in place should have made me emotionally invested in the show: adora, glimmer, and catra are all great characters, and i really loved bow, scorpia, and mermista as well; the narrative of how shadow weaver's abuse shaped adora and catra respectively was super interesting, especially in regards to how they both viewed themselves as fundamentally worthless but this lack of self-esteem clearly manifested itself in different ways and caused them to butt heads; double trouble was a super fun chaos character... but something about it felt... idk... forced? like i know it's based off a toy commercial from the 80s so nd stevenson was limited in that regard, but something about the aesthetic of it put me off from ever connecting to the show on an emotional level. it was technically good, but felt inauthentic. i still respect the show for what it is, and am very happy that it exists, but it's not a show i feel any real emotional attachment to, unlike some of the other shows i've since watched with my brother (cough cough amphibia, cough cough hilda) which are less overtly queer (although i would argue that both amphibia and hilda are gay enough) but more authentic and nuanced both in terms of their aesthetic and their writing.

ships that make me go absolutely insane
Ranked from most insane to least
EREMIN (AoT: Eren x Armin)
the entire time I'm watching them my brain is "they're just like me fr" they make me feel as if I'm tearing apart. Oh the shared dream, the ruin, the raw honesty cutting through layers of deception, the way they end - it's too much. I saw myself so much in their dynamic something about queer childhood friends to lovers. something about living in that in-between...also aspec Eren real. You have NO IDEA how much analysis I've written about them. The slow corruption of their shared dream, the way Armin knew Eren best, the way Eren looks at Armin :( "And in the corner of your eye / I saw a dream that never died" - Aurora
Catradora (SPoP: Catra x Adora)
First canon queer ship I watched <3 both healing and painful at the same time, it tapped into something deep I had forgotten long ago. The sort of relationship where you're really close but there's a gap you both feel and won't address for fear of your own feelings and about losing each other (both eremin & catradora) but then they're able to actually close it!! To see each other as they are! Do you understand how much hope that offers?! To be seen and be told your fate is not tragic? I have also written so much analysis about them. "You're the only friend I need / Sharing beds like little kids / And laughing 'til our ribs get tough / But that will never be enough" - Lorde
Cassunzel (TTS: Cass x Rapunzel)
*gasp* a ship that isn't queer childhood besties to lovers? But bro the YEARNING. Oh it hurts so bad. Also the aesthetic is simply divine. I'm ranking it here because it was very impactful for me some years ago, though I'm not into it enough right now to deliver a thorough explanation. Also I'm pretty sure Cass is a canon lesbian? Massive W. idk, something about shipping noncanon queer ships that gets me. "I'm sick of the sun / Can't trust anyone" - Poppy
Nuts n Dolts (RWBY: Penny x Ruby)
Idk they just cared for each other so tenderly and then Penny died twice and Ruby couldn't save her either time. Ow ow ow. THE doomed yuri. I love to hc both of them as aspec, & both are very neurodivergent-coded (because that is what I am). I'm drawn to the comfort, security, warmth, and the angst. There's also just something very bright in their relationship that draws me in, similarly to eremin. seeing each other in such a golden light while resenting themselves perhaps? the way they look at each other & hold each other so dear? "A chance to share the world / To be a girl who finally felt alive" - Friend, RWBY
Bumbleby (RWBY: Blake x Yang)
Holy shit the yearning! Blake abandoning Yang AND THEN COMING BACK AND STAYING. Protecting each other :') Healing together. It's just so sweet and powerful I can't help but adore it. I remember watching the first 2 seasons when I was little before I knew gay people existed, and shipping them even then. ngl I really want to go rewatch earlier seasons through a sapphic angst/yearning lens. "I made a vow, I'm not alone / Not dying now, we're protecting our own" - Nevermore, RWBY

My Adventures With Superman - A Rambling Set Of Thoughts
Okay, I know I don't USUALLY make posts like this and I especially hate getting cynical and nitpicky about these sorts of things because I just don't wanna contribute to all the negativity on the internet... But this is something I just couldn't shake.
So last night I watched the first season of My Adventures With Superman and... I have a lot of mixed feelings about to be brutally honest which is a shame because I know SO many people really loved this show.
Spoilers for season 1 obviously
For the most this show is great and it has a good foundation for Superman and gets him and his relationship with Lois so right. I love how Clark is this big, soft himbo twink dork who really reminds me of Adora from She-Ra and Lois is this fun tomboy who falls head over heels for him. And to be honest, all of their moments were genuinely the highlight of the show for me. SERIOUSLY ITS LIKE CLARK AND LOIS BUT MADE FOR SAPPHICS LIKE ME AND I ADORE THEM
Tumblr media
I love the art style and animation too and really does put a very fresh new aesthetic on DC stuff. Sure, it's a bit too much like She-Ra and Voltron in places, but for DC, it's a really good breath of fresh air. Seriously, look at the designs of Deathstroke and Livewire!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But sadly, that's not all the show is and this is where I have to sadly talk about my negatives with it.
Sooooo… this show was written a lot of the same people who wrote She-Ra and it seems to be a big fan of various anime things too, especially Dragon Ball Z and Neon Genesis Evangelion.
To that end, the show has basically... turned Superman into a mixture of Adora and Goku, not just in terms of personality traits and in Adora's case, her relationship with Catra (Seriously, if Clark was a woman and blonde, I would swear she and Lois would just be Catradora)
This sadly does apply to how this show portrays the Kryptonians, who are implied to MOSTLY be a race of evil conquerors who tried to attack Earth only for Krypton to be destroyed. This is VERY similar to how the First One's were depicted in She-Ra, as well as how the Saiyans were in Dragon Ball Z. One could also argue that their attack on Earth is a weird mashup of the movie Arrival and the Second Impact from Evangelion but that's me getting very nitpicky.
Tumblr media
So naturally, we have Adora and Goku's traits being applied to Superman. And…. those traits don't really work for Superman, at all. Now I should be clear, it seems to be that Jor-El and Lara were actually like rebels fighting the evil Kryptonians (which is ironically Mara's whole deal... you seeing the She-Ra pattern here yet?) but like... I don't like this idea at all. Poor Clark even has a fucking breakdown later on and thinks he's actually some evil weapon meant to conquer Earth AGAIN just like Adora from She-Ra being used as a weapon by the First One's. And I just feel bad for him because he's trying to be the good decent Superman we all love... but he's getting dragged into this plot that pretty much breaks him... and I don't really like it.
And then there's a whole subplot about Lois meeting alternate versions of herself and discovering alternate versions of Superman who are evil (which is bizarrely how Kryptonite is introduced in this show) which.... yeah I don't like that plot either. Nor am I the fan of Task Force X pulling the whole "the Government is treating clark as hostile because they think he's an evil alien" plot which I have gotten kinda tired of seeing in a lot of modern Superhero media. It's either Superheroes being hated or hunted by the government or being made to work for them.
And you know where this all probably came from for this show in particular? Fucking Zack Synder and Man of Steel. It's kind of ironic because a lot of this show feels like its in response to the Synderverse, like it feels obligated to comment on how people see Superman now because of those crappy movies, something that I know James Gunn is probably gonna do as well with his superman movie basically a live action version of Superman vs the Elite.
And just…. no, none of this shit is really necessary nor is it a good idea. Because it kinda takes away some bits of Superman that I like. I know the show isn't done yet but… I can already make a good guess of where it's going to go. And where it's going… idk if I'm gonna like a whole lot.
It is clearly a show wanting to be different from all that has been done before with Superman…. but by being different for the sake of it, it's doing a lot of stuff I just don't like.
I just want there to be a day when we get a Superman thing that doesn't have to justify the man's own existence and role in a story because some objectivist edgelord made a bad movie with him in it eleven years ago.
So yeah, by turning Superman into more or less mostly Adora from She-Ra... I think they might have messed him a bit in my eyes. I hope season 2, whenever that comes out hopefully pushes things in a more hopeful direction and I could genuinely call this a good adaption of Superman. Because there is so much potential with just from the relationship of Clark and Lois alone that tells me that these creators just GET how Superman's character is.
So yeah, I hope that long rambling thought made sense.

Doll Notes
(Watching a YouTube compilation of Doll scenes. I might rewatch the series at some point. I adore the aesthetic, characters, lore, and themes, but man, the pacing is messy and exposition over-loaded. And that tonal whiplash.)
I feel the pilot should’ve been remade. So many elements are different, like Doll being such a non-character.
Man, that exposition for Doll’s folks being dead was poorly executed.
Doll’s appearance on a first watch for audiences builds up intrigue. Doll’s appearance on a second watch for audiences reveals an isolated orphan hiding her true nature who will do anything to avenge the death of her parents and cure herself of the Absolute Solver.
What drew Doll and Lizzie to each other? Doll seems to genuinely enjoy her company even though they’re opposite in personality. It’s a shame we only ever get snippets of their interactions.
Factors that drew me to Doll: her design, her voice acting, her dry and sarcastic nature, the mystery surrounding in her, her complexity (especially compared to a lot of the other characters in the show)
I love Doll’s lil quiet mannerisms (like her thumbs up), reminds me of myself when I’m in a quieter mood :P I wonder if Doll was indifferent towards Uzi or if her kindness was a front?
The “As they say in Russian” line is A tier
Doll crushing that Worker Drone to get to V made me realize her actions are not totally a result of her struggling with the Absolute Solver. It definitely seems she struggles with those instincts, yet that murder (in a show called Murder Drones, haha) was very deliberate.
I wonder if episode 3 was inspired by Carrie? It has a very Carrie feel to it.
I wish Doll and Uzi had more interactions. The two are perfect Foils, but because there are only 8 episodes, everything feels so rushed (including Doll questioning why Uzi would side with the Murder Drones. Like. How does Doll feel about Uzi to begin with? Kinda reflects my questions from a few bullet points ago, it’s hard to tell what the show wants me to take away other from Doll other than “Doll is a traumatized, creepy child who has a soft spot for Uzi but also is willing to abandon her because… shrug”)
Y’know… Doll and Uzi is a fun ship. Could’ve been like Catradora. Two sapphics with opposing ideals continuously beating the shit out of each other.
It’s interesting rewatching Doll realizing she has mastery over her Absolute Solver, which contrasts to Uzi struggling with her own. It would’ve been so cool watching the two duke it out with their powers, further emphasizing how much of Foils they are.
I really expected Doll to help Uzi from the sides based on ep3’s conclusion, but that never happened?
Kinda confused why Doll worked behind the scenes with Tessa and J instead of working solo, especially since Doll doesn’t trust the murder drones and was more than willing to annihilate V. I guess Doll felt could get what she needed from Tessa and J before ditching them? Don’t know why she doesn’t rope Uzi into her plans, tho, especially given that she expressed a desire to want to help her. Man, there’s a lot of fanfic potential with these questions.
Again. No idea why Doll doesn’t. Rope Uzi into her plans. Not even a “Let’s ditch these guys.” I’m assuming she figures teaming up with Uzi is a lost cause since Uzi is willing to work with “the enemy,” but like, Doll also expressed a desire to help Uzi in ep3, so like…
I’d completely forgotten that Doll abandoned the others in ep6 for some reason. I understand Doll not trusting and ditching Tessa (who turns out to be the Solver), J, V, and N. But Uzi?
I wonder how much Doll knew about the true nature of the murder drones compared to Uzi? I’m guessing she had enough of a relationship with her parents to know the True Story.
When were Doll’s parents killed by V?
“I will not let it use me to consume the planet!” Where was the patch before, then? Why wasn’t Doll wearing it while attending school? (Imagining Doll wearing the patch up until V’s arrival, then ripping it off at the prom to be like “it’s murder time.”)
I actually thought Doll was Fake Dead when I first saw her death cuz these drones keep falling and popping back up, for real.
Overall, I feel like Doll’s backstory (and her mother’s) and characterization were shaped as production progressed rather than planned in advance, which is a shame since Doll is a SUPER interesting character with a lot going on. The rewatch of Doll’s scenes and my questions are helping me come up with an idea for my own take on Doll, though.

Other than catra/catradora, what problems do you have with the show?
oh boy, where do i even start? i'm just gonna try and keep it short because if i try to explain every single aspect in detail, this post could be turned into a book. so i'm just gonna list out all the problems i have with this show, both in terms of problematic elements and poor writing.
blatant ableism towards the autistic character
bullying and mistreatment of a young boy being played for laughs
war and desolation being used as an Aesthetic™ rather than a theme/message
rushed and poorly written character arcs (and no, it's not just catra)
amatonormativity and forced ships (the show is supposed to be representative of the LGBT community, yet almost all of the characters need to end up in a relationship, in order to have a happy ending)
boring and poorly written Final Boss™
too much fanservice (little snippets of fanservice is fine but when you ignore and disrespect canon just so you can make the viewers happy, that's a problem)
an entire kingdom is conquered and its people probably killed/seriously harmed, and its ruler is shown moping around in a bathtub and eating ice cream as if they got stood up by their date instead (this connects to my earlier point about war being trivialized)
the only non-binary representation being a shapeshifting lizard creature (look, i like double trouble as a character but you have to admit that they're not exactly good representation)
one of the most powerful female characters in OG she-ra being reduced to the "doting aunt" (for a show that claims to be about empowering women, they sure ignore the powerful women in canon)
weird pacing and inconsistencies (apparently two or three years passed within the five seasons, yet the characters haven't aged at all, especially frosta who supposedly went from 12 to 14, yet looks exactly the same)
the princesses are useless (they should have named the show 'Catra and the others' lmao)
overuse of character archetypes instead of making original characters (the peaceful vegan flower princess who sometimes loses her temper, the depressed emo girl™, the hyperactive child™)
stereotyping of certain communities (the high-functioning autistic genius, the angry latina, the predatory lesbian, etc)
bad comedy (this is probably subjective and i don't expect everyone to agree, but most of the comedic elements is SPOP was just.. corny. only scorpia worked well as a comic relief character imo)
the only polyamory representation being two bullies and their victim
death of the author™ (basically, confirming things outside of the series, instead of portraying them well in canon)
plot holes and unsatisfying conclusions (adora's origin was a huge plot point in s4 but they completely abandon it in the last season)
there may be a lot that i've missed because i have a goldfish brain and tend to forget stuff. but i'd say these are the main problems i have with the show. it did a few things right, but fucked up on a thousand others.

The Ultimate OTP Trio Dynamic Poll!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Explanation under the cut for a deeper explanation:
Tired Investigator X Parasite:
One of them works in a field that involves investigating crimes, they have a failing relationship, are messy looking, and a hidden dark side they try to repress in order to be normal (that is, until Parasite enters the picture).
The other is a dangerous villain often referred to as some sort of parasite due to how their influence drains the tired investigator of any good outside of them.
This is the Hannigram/Symbrock/Villanelle blunt rotation.
Emo Furry X McDonald's Forehead:
Once upon a time, I decided to make a series of posts comparing the cinematic paralles between Catra/Adora's relationship and Batman/Jokers relationship. I started the McDonald's Forehead X Emo Furry as a way to sort any more posts I made on their relationships due to Joker/Adora having large foreheads that formed an arch similar to the Mcdonald's logo; and with Batman/Catra, well you know...
But then, I began to notice similarities between Batman/Ekko and Joker/Jinx respectively. I started to connect the dots, and thus decided to add Ekko and Jinx to the McDonald's Forehead X Emo Furry dynamic due to Ekko having a gritty aesthetic with animal symbolism, and Jinx's arched hairline.
But I should probably give a similar explanation for these relationships like I did for the other dynamic.
Ok, one is a fighter with a tragic upbringing that forced them to learn how to professionally fight, and how to protect others from harm. They're a leader in their respective groups, and they rebel from their respective systems due to said systems being run by corrupt people.
The other is a chaotic gremlin with campy flair, obvious mental issues, an unhealthy lack of fear for death, crummy backgrounds, a desire to be loved while causing havoc, and intelligent planners despite how their appearance would contrast this fact.
These two come together and form a Yin Yang bond in the battlefield; along with the themes of how people respond to similar traumas completely differently. Featuring light and dark symbolism!
