I hate to break it to you but no, improving your mental health shouldn't be the only reason why you want to adopt a pet. Seeing posts listing all the benefits of getting a cat to help with your anxiety/depression without ever mentioning that it's a financial and 20 year-long commitment, that it can be emotionally challenging at times, that you must provide the adequate environment, is quite disturbing - we are talking about another sentient being whose needs should come first, and the 'how useful can they be to me' rhetoric, even with the best of intentions, is damaging, for both the animal and potentially yourself.

It’s not about how bad you want it. It’s about how hard you’re willing to work for it.
