Today I discovered a short-lived official Marvel/DC crossover comic series from the 90s known as the Amalgam Universe, where characters from each universe are combined by taking elements from each. And the combinations are WILD. Here’s just some of them.

Super-Soldier (Captain America + Superman)

The Amalgam Age of Comics The DC Comics Collection TPB Part 1 by Dave Gibbons

“Legendary Watchmen artist Dave Gibbons drew this group piece that was used as the wrap-around cover for The Amalgam Age of Comics: DC Comics Collection #1, a trade paperback collection publishing several of the Amalgam one shots that came out in 1996, between the third and fourth issues of the DC vs. Marvel miniseries. Amalgam Comics was a publishing imprint shared by DC Comics and Marvel Comics, in which the two comic book publishers created clever mash-ups of their characters. These characters first appeared in a series of twelve comic books which were published in 1996. A second set of twelve comic books followed one year later. There was a lot of fun, creative thinking that went into these comics as literally hundred of characters were merged together in one way, shape or form. Here's a rundown on just some of the characters included in this unique piece: Dark Claw (Batman and Wolverine), Super Solider (Superman and Captain America), Amazon (Wonder Woman and Storm), Doctor Strangefate: (Doctor Fate and Doctor Strange), Catsai: (Catwoman and Elektra), Mercury: (Impulse and Quicksilver), Apollo: (The Ray and Cyclops), Firebird: (Fire and Phoenix)”

She pauses mid chew, staring at him with slightly narrowed eyes. What was he going on about now? Cause of death? She was fine as far as she could tell.

“Uh... are scarab beetles poisonous or something? Because if they are you don’t have to worry, I eat poisonous stuff all the time and it doesn’t really do anything.”

10/10 would recommend reading some of the issues;

Amazon #1 (1996 DC Comics)

Legends of the Dark Claw #1 (1996 DC Comics)

Speed Demon #1 (1996 Marvel Comics)

Comentary on some of the the characters

Edward Nigma Fisk, aka The Big Question ; Amalgamation of Edward Nigma/Riddler and Wilson Fisk/Kingpen : Not the best of the amalgamations. Why would you mix Ed with someone like Fisk?

Elektra Kyle, aka Catsai ; Amalgamation of Selina Kyle/Catwoman and Elektra : An actually decent character, good writing and idea.

Slade Murdock, aka Dare the Terminator ; Amalgamation of Slade Wilson/Deathstroke and Matt Murdock/Daredevil : Another one of my favorites. Has a semi interesting backstory.

Princess Ororo of Themiscyra, aka Amazon/Wonder Woman ; Amalgamation of Diana Prince/Wonder Woman and Ororo Munroe/Storm : Completely badass, cool character design.

Logan Wayne, aka Dark Claw ; Amalgamation of Bruce Wayne/Batman and Logan/Wolverine : What’s better than one overrated character? Two overrated characters! Better yet, make them one big overrated character that somehow becomes less overrated and acutally has decent character design.

Creed H. Quinn, aka Hyena ; Amalgamation of Joker (under his Harlan Quinn alias) and Victor Creed/Sabertooth : Horrible character design. Like why.

Ebenezer Crane, aka Scarecrow ; Amalgamation of Jonathan Crane/Scarecrow and Ebenezer Laughton/Scarecrow : Do I even need to say how stupid this is.

Daredevil vol. 2 #39 by Brian Michael Bendis, Manuel Gutierrez, and Matt Hollingsworth

One of us is a huge Flash fan, and so I love this almost definite Barry Allen (Flash II) cameo from the ‘Trial of the White Tiger’ arc. (My only complaint is that he isn’t wearing a bowtie-- though that might have been too obvious.) And it isn’t an isolated incident! Here’s Lois Lane in the first issue of Karl Kesel’s run:

Lois: “Perry? Lois. Stop the presses-- we’re about to scoop the Daily Bugle big time! I’m in New York for a little R&R, decide to see what’s playing at the local courthouse... guess who walks in? The man who brought down the Kingpin!”

Daredevil vol. 1 #353 by Karl Kesel, Cary Nord, and Christie Scheele

DC characters are frequently acknowledged in the Marvel universe (and vice versa), but they’re usually referred to as fictional. However, there have also been a bunch of multiverse-hopping Marvel/DC crossover comics, which are a lot of fun if you’re able to track them down. Matt usually isn’t involved in the big team-ups, but he has shared a few one-shots with Batman:

Bruce: “Let’s say you’re visually impaired. You favor your other modes of sensory input. A subtle inclination of your head when there’s a sound. An extremely slight flaring of your nostrils, probably indicating olfactory acuteness. You’re practiced-- or possess sensory enhancements-- making your powers of observation markedly proficient.”

Matt: “Thanks. Yours aren’t bad, either.”

Daredevil and Batman by D.G. Chichester, Scott McDaniel, and Gregory Wright

Matt: “Batcave, huh? Reed Richards, eat your heart out! You really take what you do seriously, don’t you?”

Bruce: “I have to.”

Batman/Daredevil: King of New York by Alan Grant, Eduardo Barreto, and Matt Hollingsworth

And of course, there’s also Slade Murdock (AKA Dare the Terminator) from Amalgam Comics, a joint Marvel/DC venture that literally melded together characters from the two franchises. Dare is a female amalgam of Daredevil and Deathstroke, and she works alongside Elektra Kyle (Catsai)-- a combination of Elektra and Catwoman.

“Dare and Catsai are back in town. Let’s hope the city’s stocked up on bodybags. The corpse-in-the-making is Deadeye, a killer infamous for never missing his mark. The ladies used him for target practice on their way to murder the mayor of Gotham.”

Catsai: “I don’t know why... but this just feels right!”

We wish Marvel and DC were still doing stuff like this with each other...

I'm still thinking about the amalgam universe and that they really mashed Matt Murdock and Slade Wilson into a single woman, and Selina Kyle, known bisexual, and Elektra Nachitos, who dated Matt, into another single woman, and the writer (Dan G Chichester) really didn't see any lesbian implications there

#they are mashed into #Dare the Terminator #and Catsai #respectively #Dare still wears an eyepatch despite being blind #the dork
