Tephrosia virginiana

Whenever I see this plant I think acidic nutrient poor soils, ericaceous.

It prefers acidic weathering sand, well drained, in full sun, and often is associated with heavily mycorrhizal dependent environments despite not associating with mycorrhizae. It’s extremely good at nitrogen fixation and cannot take being shaded out. Sandy oak savanna, pine barrens, riolitic gravel barrens, dry prairie with an associated circum acidic ph are ideal locations for this species. Here, at RRG, we see it on a burn ridge, specifically in MG FE rich acidic sandstone in what is classified as an ericaceous heath belt. It is not a forbe despite it’s looks but has a woody basal crown and a very stout woody tap root that branches scarcely into tenuous fibrous roots with root nodules for the nitrogen fixing bacterial units. Some claim that this physiological trait is a caudex or a caudiform structure, though it’s more knobby and less of a thickened mass/base that hasn’t been fully investigated for water storage, instead I think that it’s maybe more likely to produce herbaceous epicormic shoots as a reaction to fire and may more likely be a lignotuber(post fire regenerative woody knobby base) instead of a caudex; either way, this woody habit makes this species a sub shrub and not a forbe. Animals are not likely to graze/ browse on this legume due to slight toxicity; with this said, the rotenone compound is a known icthyotoxic chemical (lethal to fish if made into root powder and used.) While no longer used for fishing due to knowledge of bio-accumulation of toxins, it is being researched for invasive species control. The species reminds me of partridge pea in it’s ground bird dispersed seeds, while we have a true Faboideae sect. species with banner and keel morphology, you’ll notice that it has an exposed/ keel and wing form allowing easy access and buzz pollination more often than most papillionaceous flowers. (senna and partridge peas are primarily buzz pollinated and are in sect. Caesalpinioideae (subfamily of fabaceae)). I see more bumble bees and wasps on this species than any other forbe this time of year ( Late May).

Most Tephrosia are coastal plains species with only one other “wide spread” species (T. spicata)

Though T. onobrychoides does make it in-land due to Oklahoma short grass prairie matrix.

Brachystelma bruceae Ssp. bruceae

This subspecies is quite interesting when discussing it’s differences from just Brachystelma bruceae because of how dramatically different the color in the flowers are and the more prolific vining habit that seems to accompany the plant. As far as caudiciform species go, this one is small and stays small.

As far as habitat goes, it is found in mixed desert and scrubland corridors in one location of South Africa, Mpumalanga mountains, specifically near Kaapsehoop.

The sub species population is considered stable as well as just sp. ; the habitat range is small but the plant usually remains unnoticed enough to not have any issues with poaching for the most part. http://redlist.sanbi.org/species.php?species=2640-7

The variations in Brachystelma bruceae suggests potential discussion on more issues discussing divergence.

The Living Rock Shrub

Aloinopsis schooneesii

It’s not a rock, nor a true shrub; but, it does share some resemblance to the characteristics described in those definitions.

This species is a very interesting member of the living rock or ice plant family of Aizoaceae and a native to only a specific area of the rocky scrubland of South Africa’s Eastern Cape Bushmanland locatity. It is a bit of a specialist to specific microclimates of it’s native locality too, so, although the plant’s habitat is rare and it’s species is range restricted, it is currently considered uncommon and stable.

The reason why I am posting this species instead of the usual temperate plants that I go crazy over is because this is the first time our plant has bloomed at our conservatory. It takes a very specific series of events to get this species to bloom.

The flowers start to form in late winter and are specifically affiliated to enzymatic/hormonal pathways that are enabled when temperatures are idle from 60-70. Water is also crucial to get this species to produce flowers; a period of watering in late winter involving watering once a week for two weeks with large enough time periods of full sun and rarely cloudy days had to occur. If the time period for blooming is too cloudy the flowers abort. When the second watering occurs in full sun the flowers’ sepals start to dehisced forming a cup at the top where water coalesce into a large drop. There is not much to this water formation besides that it prevents the flower from drying out to quickly in the early stages. If the plant receives long enough periods of full sun the flower will finally open, the water then slides off the waxy cuticle of the flowers exposing staminal tips. At night the flowers close up once more and open once again if the weather allows it. Our plant’s blooms lasted about 1 week before finally finishing up.

If this plant is pollinated it will eventually form seed pods which stay closed until the next rainy season. The seed pods are thick and tough enough to survive intense heat and dry spells. Eventually the seed pods will be dead and dried up with the preserved seeds inside. When the rain finally comes and enough turgor pressure can still occur between each cell, the capsule lids of the seed pod will then dehisced as a product of this turgor. The associated effect becomes a short flick as the seeds may flick out or roll out. The turgor joint is similar to the leptosporangiate reticulated annulus of leptosporangiate ferns in this sense.

The reason why this plant is sometimes referred to as a shrub, is because of its natural ability to raise itself out of the hard shallow rocky soil over time. This species has large swollen tap roots that form a condensed naturally grafted caudex when exposed to surface air after upheaval. This makes this plant fairly easy to manipulate for bonsai and makes it a treasure in any collection.
