Fun Fact: This is Ashanti, TJ's older sister. She's engaged to Mekhi (Monet's older brother). Her & TJ are actually Melo's cousins. Melo was raised by his Aunt (Ashanti & TJ's mom) and Grandma. His mom passed away when he was very young.

Ashanti and Mekhi have had an on -again-off-again relationship since high school. Now that they're 30-somethings, She's ready to settle down and start a family. She stopped taking her birth control (without telling Mekhi) and has been trying to get pregnant. They just got back together (officially) not too long ago and she is not about to do the whole break-up/make-up thing any more. She damn near gave him an ultimatum that he better put a ring on it, or else...A few months later, he did exactly that. She...I mean they're planning the wedding of her dreams. Mekhi would be ok with going to the courthouse but anything for the love of his life...right?

Vanity Fair: Viola, I think viewers will be amazed by your beefed-up physical transformation. You really trained hard to play General Nanisca.

Viola Davis: We started intensely a few months before shooting—four hours a day, five days a week. Weight training, sprinting, martial arts, and weaponry training for the machete. I like to say that I was the OG warrior. [Laughs.]

Vanity Fair: The battle scenes in the film appear to be graphic, and culturally specific. We see dark-skinned Black women with well-oiled bodies, muscles, and serrated fingernails that are used as murder weapons.

Prince-Bythewood: My approach was that you don’t need to add anything to the story. These women were fascinating and didn’t need to be embellished or glossy. I wanted it to be real and visceral and raw.

Vanity Fair: Will it be difficult for the average American moviegoer to digest these images of ferociously powerful, dark-skinned female warriors? I kept thinking as I watched the early footage that Black women have never been seen this way onscreen before.

Prince-Bythewood: If you can digest Avatar, then you can digest this.

WORKING. OFF. THE. love when my good posts about spn racism go around and i have to endure white peoples tags in my notes about how sad and angry this makes them and how unbelievable it is no one ever noticed or did anything about all the racism. and wow i guess things were just different in 2005. and then tie it into the homophobia for the beloved gay white angel. like well uhm first of all not only did i notice immediately but i had a visceral reaction to a black woman calling some white dude master and wearing a collar but i can see why you wouldn’t pay attention to that and second the 2005 part is probably the least important thing too because these stories were perpetuated into 2020 stories as well. sucks that makes you feel icky though! imagine that’s ur whole life!
