20th of May
The bacchanal as the waxwings descend on the mulberry A celebratory rush hour of chatter and flight The sweet intoxication of the juice of the fruit draws them Into a midday display of delight
This is something beauteous, yet wholly ephemeral They stay not much longer than a day A playhouse putting on a show only to disappear Sometime around the 20th of May
Every single year I await this headliner matinee And without fail it comes through A necessary turn to the next page of the seasons Summer has begun anew

The cedar waxwings blew through a few weeks ago. As a species, their M.O. is to show up like locusts, eat every berry in the state, poop on everyone's cars, and then vanish within a day. I respect it, i suppose.
