By the way, I am fully including Uhura in my assessment of tragedy porn in this last episode. This women has already lost both of her parents, and then got to be completely re-traumatised by losing a friend she’d grown close to and saw as a father-figure. And Celia Rose Gooding does a beautiful job conveying Uhura’s pain at losing Hemmer, but seeing her so distraught, I also think of M’Benga having to lose his daughter forever in the episode previous, and of Raffi Musiker being depicted as an addict and alcoholic in Picard, and of everything Michael Burnham and Cleveland Booker have gone through in Discovery. Black pain is far too normalised in New Trek. Representation cannot come at the cost of having to watch marginalised people (and for the most part, only marginalised people) suffer tragedy after tragedy, over and over again.

Have you watched the first episode of Strange New Worlds yet? I wanna know your thoughts
THANK YOU FOR THE OPPURTUNITY, DISTINGUISHED PANEL OF JUDGES (spoilers, seriously do not read if you havent watched it! its so good, you should do it unsullied)
okay so first and foremost: i fucking loved it. it was the best live action pilot of a star trek show since DS9- i thought the writing was so fun and energetic, and the characters/ cast are POPPING off the screen. im so excited for this season, i think its going to be a return to form in a lot of ways and i think that'll be a breath of fresh air. (i know some people are sad SNW doesn't seem to be taking risks, format wise, and you know; i like that picard and disco did something new and broke the serial mold that DS9 cracked for them. but i also love episodic television and i think having SNW be episodic functions as a great connective tissue between DISCO and TOS!)
the cast is FUCKING STELLAR!!!!! THEYRE SO GOOD! we know i love ethan & anton & rebecca's takes already, but what little we got of everyone else has me DROOLING. also im in love with ortegas already so. lesbian me, confirmed. (also set design & lighting is so much better than disco... holy shit)
i also loved the choice to open with a mission that the Red Angel incident caused; i think its a great way to introduce how that situation is still heavily affecting both pike AND spock, as well as how Starfleet was clearly not equipped for that level of conflict and now have to grow as well.
now... that's not to say i don't have critiques. because obviously, im not pleased with the spock/ t'pring stuff. i don't like how either character was written in their interactions and i think their scenes weaken the relationship we see in TOS. i know im a gay spock truther and people love to give me shit about that, (which you know... is another issue we wont get into here) but setting my personal spock truth aside; it was still a weak choice. i think tpring and spock work best when presented as foils and peers who are forced into a bad situation. the way they both get OUT of that situation (their engagement) is what defines both them and the fundamental difference b/w vulcans & humans: tpring functions within the traditional system to dissolve their union, as where spock breaks form completely and creates a new solution. framing their relationship like they did in the pilot weakens that decision on a whole. (& im not someone whos like "oh you have to stay totally adherent to established canon!" either but these interactions also felt out place when compared to how t'pol's engagement went? or is that just me?)
however, im also holding judgement. because i think one way to interpret this spock trying to follow michael's final advice (yeah yeah i have michael brain rot, sue me i dont care.) in spock's head, tpring IS the person farthest from him (she, again, represents the archetypical vulcan and everything about that society that he doesn't fit- and, they don't really like each other. they were forced together, they did not chose this.) this is spock reaching out, trying his damnest to respect what his sister wanted for him, even though she meant something totally different (canonically, or metacanonically at least, she was talking about kirk-) so it could very much crumble into the relationship we see between tpring and spock in TOS.
regardless, i like how spock was written outside these scenes and you can tell ethan loves playing him. and the tpring actress is really serving, i hope she gets more outside of spock! uhura is already a delight, i cannot wait to dive more into her and see what celia does because theyre so talented; i love la'an's voice and presence and i can't wait for her and #1 to have scenes together! pike is so charming and well written and i love how he interacts with his crew. chapel is deranged and i love that choice, m'benga is such a good CMO. i am so pleased with this episode, i really am!
oh also this is a sam kirk stan blog now. called it, i called it SO HARD. AGAIN I CALLED IT AGAIN--

Honoring Nichelle Nichols in Strange New Worlds in a fantastic way.
First things first, I wanna go on record that Strange New Worlds is the classic feeling of Trek that I, and I'm sure many, have been waiting for.
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE LOVE LOVE Disco, Lower Decks, Prodigy, and Picard, but this harkens back to feelings of watching TNG as a child. There is something familiar in Strange New Worlds and with only 2 episodes in, I'm beyond sold on this show, something that took a few more episodes of the other new Treks to do.
Now, Nichelle Nichols and her character continuing on in SNW. I know a considerable amount about the history and BTS of much of Star Trek. Though books, interviews, magazines, internet forums, if you love something you steep yourself in it and you happen to pick up things along the way and recognize it when it presents itself in a unique way. This particular story isn't really a deep cut one, and I'm sure I can't be the only one that made this connection, but using Nichelle's own conflict with Star Trek as character development for the origins of Uhura on the SNW is a really special and interesting way to honor her.
Just a quick summary of the story I'm referring to just in case someone doesn't know. There was a moment during the very early days of Star Trek that Nichelle didn't really see herself in the future of the show. She had, in fact, written a resignation to Gene Roddenberry to officially step down as Uhura. Gene told her to take the weekend to consider her choice, if Monday came around and she still wanted to leave, she would have his blessing.
I'm sure it's no coincidence that episode 2 of SNW dealt with the nature of pre-ordained fate, because as fate would have it, that weekend Nichelle met the one and only man who could have changed her mind about leaving Star Trek: Martin Luther King Jr. He reminded her of the rarity of black faces on television, and even more rare that a black character be on screen not as a slave, a servant, or a thug, but as equals to the people around her. Uhura was a woman of status, a symbol to young black children that the future included them and not to lose hope.
As we all know, Nichelle decided to stay on Star Trek and cement her incredible legacy for many generations of black children.
Now, you've probably already connected the dots here, so I wont insult you with a lengthy explanation. But having SNW's Uhura question whether Starfleet was something that was going to be apart of her future is a very genius way of weaving Nichelle into the fabric of the new Uhura. I hope Nichelle, while watching this show, recognizes this and understands what a gift and a legend she truly is.
Also, credit to Celia Rose Gooding for picking up this character and kicking ass with it. She is a fantastic Uhura, and the subtle Nichelle-isms she has put into the character haven't gone unnoticed.
I've wanted a Pike series or film for most of my life. Having this series already be this in-tune with me two episodes in has me anxiously waiting for next Thursday.

Hey Everyone,
We're the @spacebattlespodcast crew! We wanted to take a second to introduce ourselves from left to right!
First off, we have Brian, aka @thetasteoffire (or AlgorithmDaddy over on Twitter). Brian's our fearless leader, our cruel totally benevolent master of game. He is a programmer, composer, and typical Ohio Guy. He seeks the destruction of capitalism with every fiber of his being, but also wants to be Jean-Luc Picard.
Next up is Kevin (surreal.analysis on Instagram), who joined us in our second "Episode" Grasp of the Empire. Kevin is a kindly soul and also a force of chaos. He can be found trying to eat fish, even though he is extremely allergic.
Third we have Victoria, aka @aionimica (same over on Twitter), who helps with podcast editing, who runs most of the social media stuff for us. Her superpower is forgetting to hydrate and doing a lot of pull-ups.
Fourthly, we have Rebecca, aka @dinosaurjam (both here and on Twitter), who is a cat mom and aspiring woods witch and novelist. She has a tea for every mood.
Fifthly, we have Celia, aka @draganchitsa (aka crossing_winter on Twitter) who is absolutely a "functional" "adult" what are you talking about; her hair color is whatever vibe she's feeling that day.
And lastly we have Chris. He's off in Japan for now, living the adventure of the expat studying a new language. We are grateful for the internet because it means we can still hang out with him halfway around the world. He has a cat named Moses, who is a gentlemanly chonk.
We're currently in the process of recording the third arc of our show, and we're so excited to share it with all of you soon!

InStyle.com hat Ethan Peck, Anson Mount und Celia Rose Gooding interviewt. Wir haben ein paar schöne Passagen querübersetzt. Pockets... what for?     And some uniform chatter.
I’m wound up in RL stuff right now, which is why it takes me so long to write my first review (or rather prologue).
But a random thought just struck me when I browsed through google and found this pic of Pike in his Disco uniform:
Tumblr media
What exactly are the pockets for on the uniform pants???
They are also on the gold uniform (although you gotta look closely to see them):
Tumblr media
They are only for opitcal reasons, right? Right?
I mean, the pants sit so tight nobody could possibly store anything in the pockets without getting their hands stuck in them (which would make some interesting self-bondage... but let’s not get carried away here).
What’s with Star Trek producers torturing their cast with super tight uniforms? I remember an interview with Colm Meaney in which he said he liked the new DS9 uniform better because the TNG one was so uncomfortably tight.
Not that I mind seeing almost every of Anson’s body details nuanced by the tight unform (especially the gold one... ahem!). But give the cast some relief for god’s sake!
After seeing the cast introduction promo for SNW it seems the producers are a bit more merciful as the new uniforms look more TOS-like and less tight.
Tumblr media
(Ahhh... that wonderful silver hair...)
Tumblr media
(Ethan rocking the new uniform)
Although there seem to be 2 different uniforms with the other one looking close to the Disco ones.
Tumblr media
(Yes, I did NOT cut out Rebecca’s/Una’s beautiful names!)
Tumblr media
(Can I say how much I love the ear communication device?)
Maybe one is for on board duties and the other for landing parties? On the other hand, Star Trek is known for playing around with uniforms and having multiple designs at the same time. Kirk had his usual command uniform and then also his green more formal one:
Tumblr media
And Picard also had two uniforms he used alternatingly, his standard one and then a more casual one:
Tumblr media
Also, Disco already changed uniforms 3 times: The blue ones they started with, then briefly the S3 future grey Starfleet standard uniform and now the S4 ones with the TNG color scheme for command, science and engineering clusters.
So I wouldn’t be surprised if we see a changed uniform for every new SNW season.
I strongly vote for keeping the tactical vest though, because... how awesome did Pike look in them?

As a Spock and Uhura  fan, I am worried  about Strange New Worlds.
As a spock and uhura fan for more than 10 years, I can only hope for the best  in strange new worlds, although i have this bad feeling in my heart that strange new worlds will likely make Uhura gay and pair spock with chapel.I dont trust Alex Kurtzman since after Star Trek  Into Darkness, when he chose to downplay the spock and uhura relationship in that awful movie. He  instead dropped many spirk innuendos  that when you watched the movie, you wondered who spock was supposed to be in love with kirk or  uhura.
it made me angry as a spock and uhura fan,  no doubt alex kurtzman wrote star trek into darkness that way because he as he admits listens to fans and the spirk fans make the loudest noises between 2009 and 2013  and that factored in into the movie.   Thank goodness we got Star Trek Beyond that wiped out the trash that was Into Darkness and made Spock seem very much in love with Uhura again even if it was to the point of loving obsession However I fear he will continue this pattern in strange new worlds, especially now that we have a non binary actress playing uhura and they gave her an androgynous    look and it Kurtzman's  world, that he how he mostly writes and gives the appearances of lgbt characters, not to mention that in star trek now, they cast only lgbtq characters in lgbtq roles and Celia Rose Gooding  is lgbtq, so all the signs points to an lgbt Uhura in strange new worlds.
I also think some spock and uhura fans like lucyintheskywithdiamonds have become extremist kind of fans  and is now as  bad as some of the spirk fans, apparently if you love spock and uhura as I do, but express some concerns  and worry or even make heart breaking predictions about how the writers may try to downplay their relationship in SNW, luckyintheskywithdaimond thinks you are a hater, racist and a sexist and a fake spuura fans that needs to be ignored.
And that in itself is  sad since Spuhura is my OTP ship, anyone can go to my archive  to see it is fully dedicated to spuhura , how lucyintheskywithdaimonds calling me a fake fan and a racist  and sexist was down right offensive to me, when what I am doing is fighting for uhura's ferminity , the fact that she is a POC  and well worthy to be loved by a man like spock. so no, I don't want a gay Uhura,  but apparently to be a spuhura fan you must think like lucyintheskywithdaimonds wants you to think only or not express some concerns about how the writers may choose to write. Sorry I ain't   part of some borg collective.
Not to stay more on topic, I am worried  and scared of how SNW is going to turn out, so far soo good with Picard and Discovery, I have been disappointed with these shows because they flipped  things so much on established characters not in the best ways and I fear SNW will bring me more more disappointment  especially with Spock and Uhura, I just have the gut feeling they will be making Uhura gay like they did with 7 of 9 in Picard and we will get Spock and Chapel instead.
I pray this does not happen but a part of me is already preparing myself for this, but at the same time, this is why Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana will always be my Spock and Uhura, regardless of how the outcome of strange new worlds turns out.
