Benjamin F. Hardy (July 25, 1921-1994) was an African-American custom motorcycle builder who made the Captain America and Billy choppers for the 1969 Peter Fonda road movie Easy Rider.
The Captain America bike, made from a then 20-year-old, heavily customized Harley-Davidson panhead is considered one of the most iconic motorcycles ever built.
Working with another African motorcycle builder, coordinator Cliff Vaughs, Hardy built two 'Billy' bikes and three 'Captain Americas', one of which was destroyed in the making of the movie, the rest of which were stolen. Each bike had a backup to make sure that shooting could continue in case one of the old machines failed or got wrecked accidentally. The 'Billy' bike was typical of the custom motorcycles Black bikers were riding at the time.
Hardy and Vaughs remained largely unknown and uncredited for 25 years as they were not accepted due to being African-Americans, and were not welcomed into the mainstream motorcycle world in the USA.
Known locally as "Benny" and "King of Bikes" Ben Hardy's Motorcycle Service was located at 1168 E. Florence in Los Angeles. He was a mentor to many of the local motorcyclists in South Central, Los Angeles.
His work was featured in the “Black Chrome” exhibition at the California African American Museum

Summer days spent in the city may very well lead you to one of our borough’s great green spaces… Prospect Park.
“Spending time in the park afforded me a temporary escape from the fast pace of city life,” says Jamel Shabazz. “Photographing in [Prospect Park and Central Park] also provided me with the opportunity to create various distinguished bodies of work, from environmental portraits, candid images of families, and endless celebrations that took place on any given day.”
Add our stoop to your route to or from the park to see portraits like these as part of Jamel Shabazz: Faces and Places, 1980–2023.

Exhibition Central Museum Utrecht from March to June 2002
The text depicts working style (work in progress, experiments, influences), designers biography and some citations from intervierws. Richly illustrated with exhibition, catwalk photos. Text commenting on two generations of Japanese designers.
Made in Japan focused on the youngest generation of Japanese fashion designers: Hiroaki Ohya, Gomme, Shinichiro Arakawa, Masaki Matsushima, Kosuke Tsumura and - no longer a beginner - Junya Watanabe. To clarify the Japanese origin and mentality, the work of their main predecessors Yohji Yamamoto, Comme des Garçons and Issey Miyake was also presented.

He replied with “How bad can it be?”

On October 12, 1944, the Germans leave Athens.
📷"The helmet of the last Nazi who left Athens"
This helmet fell off the head of one of the last German soldiers to leave Athens, on the downhill of Anagnostopoulou Street, while they were fleeing at full speed on motorcycles. The helmet was collected by Stéfanos Ayélastos who donated it to the National Historical Museum on October 28, 1964.

Conjure canes in the United States are decorated with specific objects to conjure specific results and conjure spirits. This practice was brought to the United States during the transatlantic slave trade from Central Africa. Several conjure canes are used today in some African American families. In Central Africa among the Bantu-Kongo, banganga ritual healers use ritual staffs.
These ritual staffs are called conjure canes in Hoodoo which conjure spirits and heal people. The banganga healers in Central Africa became the conjure doctors and herbal healers in African American communities in the United States. The Harn Museum of Art at the University of Florida collaborated with other world museums to compare African American conjure canes with ritual staffs from Central Africa and found similarities between the two, and other aspects of African American culture that originated from Bantu-Kongo people.
