Omg can you do 23 and 60 (from the prompts) for an imagine (bonus point if Sweet Pea and reader low key can’t stand each other at first)??
I didn’t quite go for the bonus points because it wouldn’t have worked for the idea I had. Hope you enjoy it though!
23. “Just pretend to be my date.”
AND
60. “If Ididn’t know any better, I’d say you were trying to seduce me.”
Oh god, you think, cringing backinto the wall as your eyes sweep the room. Stepping on a discarded soda canmakes you jump like it’s a land mine. The place is packed; on sofas, indoorways, sitting on the stairs, pouring drinks in the kitchen, people areeverywhere―your peers in age if not in acquaintance. This suburban house partymakes you shifty, squirrely, and needy for the bright lights of home.
It didn’t seem so threatening earlier, when you were chatting in the livingroom with your mom, Mary, and Mr. Andrews, then hanging out drinking lemonadein their backyard. Mary and your mom have been friends for ages, back inChicago where you live. They met volunteering, which is something your mom doesto make the large city feel a little more like a community, and which Maryclaims to do because it makes her feel less like a lawyer. Meaning human.Lawyer jokes, in your opinion, expired sometime before the turn of the 21stcentury, but Mary makes them tolerable.
Of course, you would never have started being so much in Mary’s company ifnot for her son. Last summer, he came to stay with his mom over March Break. You met and it was… something… at first sight. Before you could tell if thething between you and the easygoing redhead with the earnest smile would turninto more than your mom going, “Hey, Y/N! Why don’t you and Archie check outthe aquarium/the museum/the art gallery/the park today?” (you playing the partof prospective love interest/tour guide), he was on a bus back to Riverdale. When he returned for the sliver of time between end of exams and IndependenceDay, the two of you did a little less sightseeing and a little more smooching, yet the chemistry just wasn’t there.
Nope, no fireworks in time for the 4th of July, just plenty oflingering weirdness like the smell of yesterday’s dinner that the distancebetween Chicago and Riverdale allowed you not to face. Until your mom decidedto tag along with Mary when she headed to her hometown for a visit. A realcommunity! A diner! A town hall! A post office! You accepted the inevitabilityof imminent travel plans, crossing your fingers that Archie would somehowmiraculously not be around to bump into.
Except that Mary and your mom decided to make their own plans and leave youto attend Archie’s party (promised to be very responsibly controlled, despitethe absence of Mr. Andrews). And now Archie’s over there in the other room andyou very much don’t want to look like the pathetic child of his mom’s bestfriend, dumped on him for the evening. The fact that it’s been a year since youdumped him is beside the point. You need a human life raft, or something largeto hide behind.
The front door―opening and closing so often since you arrived that you thinkthe Andrews should consider putting in a revolving door―flies inward yet againand the answer to your desperate party prayers walks through it. Who knows ifhe’d float, but he’s definitely big enough to conceal you, between the heightand the bulky leather jacket he wears unzipped over a black t-shirt.
“Perfect,” you mutter to yourself, eyes going side to side to check that youhave not just become the weird muttering girl on top of the pathetic child ofArchie’s mom’s best friend. Etc. etc. Your real and imagined humiliation endshere and now!
Mr. Tall, Dark, and Obstructing starts to follow the friends he came in withthrough to the other room, so you, desperate, grab his sleeve as he passes anddon’t let go. You are bold. You are determined. You are… possibly acting like abadly behaved Jack Russell, with this clamping onto and tugging of the sleeve, but hey, you seem to have gained your unwitting plus one’s attention. He stopswhile his pals go on ahead, looking after them.
“It’s cool, Northsider,” he says, barely glancing at you. “Everybody’sfriends now, remember? Do you need to check my invitation?” The guy snorts andlooks at you again. Starts to look away, and looks harder. “You don’t go toRiverdale High.”
“I’m not exactly on the bus route. Chicago,” you explain. He shrugs likehe’ll allow it, which might piss you off if it weren’t so confusing a response. You introduce yourselves, but your focus is elsewhere.
The guy is doing his job as a barrier so well, not that he has any idea, that you’ve lostsight of Archie. For the first time all night, you willingly move away from thewall and peer around. Shit, he’s heading in your direction, giving andreceiving backslaps like life’s just one big football game. You remember yoursurroundings. Small town. Student athletes. You reassess and mentally dial backthe prejudice. Just not enough that you’re suddenly feeling the need toactively be friendly to the host.
“You just escape prison or something?” the Great Wall of Leather asks you.“You’re acting a little… shifty.”
“If that helps you develop a backstory for our relationship, sure,” you fireback, panicking as Archie gets closer. You grab the guy’s hand. “Just pretendto be my date.”
“Uh, no.”
He begins to untangle his fingers from yours and you look down, noticing thelarge ring he’s wearing. This ring says ‘bite me,’ ‘fuck you,’ and ‘boy oh boywill this leave a mark if you make me want to punch you.’ With Archie on hisway over, evidently undeterred by the handhold you’re struggling to maintain, youdecide to gamble.
“So are you, like, really good friends with Archie Andrews?”
The guy looks at you like you just spit in his (hypothetical future) drink.
“No.”
“Great,” you assure him with a slap to his chest, quickly glancing sideways.“Then you can stick around for a sec and help me not interact with him.”
You hear Archie call your name in greeting, but you’re catching your ‘date’by the dog tags around his neck and yanking him down into a kiss. Your eyes aresqueezed shut and you throw your arm around the back of the guy’s neck (holycrap, he’s tall) to make it look convincing. You don’t hear your name again, though you listen carefully, like counting the seconds between rolling thunderclaps. While you’re working hard to determine whether the situation has beenresolved, Mr. Feisty with the dog tags and the tough-guy ring starts kissingyou for real, fingers searching forthe shape of your back through your denim jacket.
Roughly, you pull away, touching your lips to make sure he didn’t keep themover there with him. That was, youthink, feeling lightheaded, now that was a kiss.
“If I didn’t know any better, I’d say you were trying to seduce me,” he concludes, curling his lower lip into his mouth as his tongue runs over it.
“I…” you attempt to protest, your tongue tying itself up like it’s trying tomake a suggestion for a second lip-lock. “You… you kissed me!”
“Uh, my brain and the marks you probably left on the back of my neck frompulling me down like that both say, ‘bullshit!’” he argues.
“Yeah,” you debate, poking a finger into his chest, “but I just kissed youto keep Archie away, you kissed mekissed me.”
“I did notice a difference,” he concedes.
“Good,” you shoot back, annoyed.
“The difference being the kissing’s better when I’m in control.”
“What?!” You spread your hands, trying to get this idiot to understand. “No-no-nuh-nuh-no. The only purpose ofthe kiss was to repel Archie. The kiss was mosquito spray. The kiss was a mousetrap.”
“Mouse traps attract mice.”
“Well, you’re confusing me! I’m screwing up my metaphors!”
He’s smiling down at you and you’re blushing and telling yourself it’sanger, but it’s not.
“Come meet the Serpents,” he invites, nodding towards the kitchen. Younarrow your eyes.
“Is there some sort of subliminal phallic messaging there?”
He snorts and throws an arm around your shoulders.
“It’s a gang.”
“You’re in a gang?”
“Yep,” he says―with disturbing casualness, in your opinion―as he steers youtowards these ‘Serpents,’ “and you’remy date.”
Prompts come from the narrowed down list here!

The 1833 Saul Alley Mansion - 6 Washington Square North
Between 1790 and 1797 the City purchased 13-acres of land near Greenwich Village as the site of a burying ground and execution site.  The potter's field was the final destination of paupers and criminals.  During periods of epidemic wooden coffins were stacked in trenches sometimes three or more deep.  Although the hangings stopped on July 8, 1819, the surrounding area was by no means affable. That all changed in 1826 when Mayor Philip Hone renovated the potter's field into a parade and drill ground named in honor of George Washington.  Before long the tens of thousands of interred bodies were forgotten. In 1828 George Rogers erected his elegant Federal-style country house on the northern edge of the Square.  In doing so, he knocked over a domino which would result in one of the most exclusive residential enclaves in Manhattan. The land on the north side of the Square between Fifth Avenue and University Place had been part of Captain Robert Richard Randall's 24-acre summer estate.  Upon his death in 1801 he donated that land for the formation of an "Asylum or Marine Hospital to be called the Sailors's Snug Harbor."  The organization was formed; however Randall's family established the hospital and grounds on Staten Island, instead.  The institution wisely retained ownership of the Washington Square land. In 1831 three prominent businessmen, John Johnston, John Morrison and James Boorman embraced the potential of the Square and planned a row of high-end speculative residences.  To do so, they leased the plots from Sailors' Snug Harbor.  Completed in 1833, the nearly matching mansions were faced in brick and trimmed in marble.  Designed in the rising Greek Revival style, they exuded refinement, wealth and taste.
The project began at the corner of Fifth Avenue and ran eastward.  photograph by the author
John Johnston erected two of the homes--Nos. 6 and 7.  He moved his family into the slightly wider house and sold the leasehold of No. 6 to the prominent Quaker merchant and politician, Saul Alley.  Alley's new home was an ample 27-feet wide.  Three stories tall plus a squat attic floor, its wide marble stoop rose to a Doric-columned portico.   The exquisite Greek Revival fencing wore generously-sized anthemia, or palmettes. Alley had begun his career as a partner with another Quaker, Preserved Fish, and Moses Grinnell in the shipping firm of Fish, Grinnell & Co.   In 1816 Alley and Fish formed the commission merchant firm of Fish & Alley.  The two would continue working together when they were named commissioners of the newly-incorporated East River Fire Insurance Company of the City of New-York in April 1833. Alley's name was well-known for a number of other reasons.  He was a Director in the Bank of the United States, a water commissioner (a highly important post at a time when the massive Croton Aqueduct project was forming), and in 1839 was a commissioner of the Custom House. Saul and his wife, the former Mary Underhill, had seven children.  Both 20-year-old Mary Anna and 8-year old Josephine died in 1841.  Son John was still living in the house when he opened his law office at No. 38 Wall Street around 1846.  He died in the house in 1851. George, who was just two-years-old when the family moved in to No. 6, would become a prominent banker and close friend of William H. Vanderbilt.  William would go on to become a partner in the banking firm of Alley, Dowd & Co.

Alley added to his resume (and fortune) in 1842 when he became a director of the New-York and Erie Railroad Company.   The population of No. 6 was reduced by one on May 4, 1848 when Lydia married George Catlin, Jr.  She would not go far, however.  The wealthy Catlin family lived just three door away at No. 9, and Lydia and her groom moved in with her new in-laws. Lydia's brother George was married to Louisa Ann Smith Johnson on April 19, 1852.  The bride was the great granddaughter of former U.S. President John Adams.  Six months later, on October 21, Saul Alley died in his Washington Square mansion.    The Alley family held on to the leasehold of the house until the death of Mary in 1868.  Although there were still five years left in its term, it was auctioned "by order of the executors of Saul Ally [sic]" on April 9 that year.
At each turn of the staircase a niche was provided for statuary or flowers.  photograph by the author
The auction announcement offered "The Lease of the lot, with the handsome three story, attic and basement brick House, No. 6 Washington square, northside" and noted it was "in complete order."  Included was the two story stable in the rear.

The leasehold was purchased for $36,000 (about $640,000 today) by Goold Hoyt Redmond.  The millionaire bachelor, son of William Redmond, Sr. and the former Sabina E. Hoyt, would not be living alone.  Of his ten siblings, his sisters Emily, Matilda and Frances (known familiarly as Fannie) were listed in the house with Goold. Immensely wealthy, Goold was listed as a "gentleman," which simply meant he did not work.  He preferred sports and society and was a member of the Metropolitan, Union, Knickerbocker, and Racquet and Tennis Clubs, as well as the Tuxedo Club among others. The Redmond sisters were no doubt distraught when their Scotch Terrier, Sam, disappeared a few months later.  Wearing his new red leather collar, he went missing on May 10, 1869.  When he did had not returned five days later, they offered a $5 reward (nearly $95 today). Sam was replaced by Rowdy, a white Bull Terrier with a black spot around his eye.  Another $5 reward was offered when he, too, went astray in March 1873. Matilda married English-born railroad mogul and banker Richard James Cross on June 3, 1872, and in 1881 Frances married Henry Beekman Livingston. In June the same year of Frances's wedding, Goold hired architect G. L. Baxter to add a one-story extension to the rear.  Costing about $42,000 in today's money, it would create a new dining room.   Although it was now just Emily and Goold in the house; the expanded space would soon be necessary.

Tragically, Matilda died in 1883, just months after the birth of her sixth child, Eliot.   Her bereaved husband Richard James Cross accepted the invitation to move into No. 6 where Emily could care for the children.  Two years later Richard married his sister-in-law, Annie Redmond.  The family continued on in the house with Goold and Emily--creating a population of 10 not including servants. It prompted Goold to enlarge the house again.  In June 1883 he brought G. L. Baxter back to add a second story to the dining room extension, providing additional bedrooms.

There was still room, apparently, for one more.  On June 15 1894 William Redmond was granted an "absolute divorce" from his wife, Margaret, whom he had married on May 1, 1889.  Newspapers reported "She did not defend the case," intimating that she had been caught in a dalliance.  William moved into No. 6 Washington Square. The Redmonds and Crosses were highly visible in society as well as political and social causes.  Mary Cross held anti-Tammany meetings in the drawing room in 1894 and was also a member of the Washington Square Auxiliary.  The couple gave financial backing to the erection of the Washington Arch in 1890. In the meantime, Emily, William and Goold often moved about society together.  They shared a cottage in Newport, for instance, and traveled to Europe together.    Goold's unmarried status made him sought-after guest by Newport socialites.  The Sun mentioned on July 4, 1897 that by his arrival "the ranks of the bachelor contingent have increased...which encourages the givers of dinner parties."  If there were any hopes of marriage in the minds of wealthy matrons, however, they would never come to pass. William Redmond died in the Washington Square house on December 6, 1898 at about 50 years of age.  Emily and Goold continued traveling and entertaining together.  On May 6, 1900 the New-York Tribune noted "Goold H. Redmond and Miss Redmond, of No. 6 Washington Square North have arranged to sail for Europe on Tuesday next in the steamship Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse.  They will remain abroad for several months."  And the siblings leased the Bishop Potter mansion in Newport together every season starting about 1901.
In the last years of the Cross-Redmond residency, there were no lions on the newels, suggesting they were added by the Morrons after 1919.  photo by Wurts Bros. from the collection of the Museum of the City of New York
Following her brother's death on December 21, 1906, Emily continued to live on with the Cross family in the only home she had ever known.  (She would, incidentally, outlive all ten of her siblings, dying at the age of 90 on January 9, 1934.) The Redmond estate sold the leasehold to No. 6 to Henry W. Kent on March 14, 1913.  Kent lived nearby at No. 80 Washington Square East.  He soon transferred it to Robert de Forest, who lived in the former Johnston house at No. 7. The eagerness of neighbors to keep control of the leasehold may have had much to do with the changing nature of the lower Fifth Avenue district.  The owners of those mansions were fleeing northward to newly-fashionable neighborhoods.  The Washington Square denizens, however, were adamant about preserving the patrician tone of their enclave. In February 1914 De Forest leased the house to George Dallas Yeomans, attorney for the Brooklyn Rapid Transit Co.  The timing could not have been better--the debut of Isabel S. Yeomans was on the near horizon. On November 25, 1915 the New-York Tribune reported on Isabel's coming-out reception in the house.  "The debutante had a record number of girls receiving with her.  There were forty-six in line."  The astoundingly long list of those in the receiving line included the names of some of the wealthiest families in New York--Alexander, Platt, Riker and Cushman among them.  Following the reception young male guests arrived for dinner and dancing. In May 1919 De Forest renewed the leasehold to No. 6 and immediately leased the house to John Reynolds Morron.  The industrialist was president of both the Peter Cooper Gelatin Co. and the Chicago-based Atlas Portland Cement Company, and was a director of the First National Bank of New York, the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, Pullman, Inc. and the International Rubber Company.  Before he and his wife, the former Belle Goodridge Burch, moved in Morron made renovations to the house.  He hired architect James Gamble Rogers to install an elevator within the house and to create a two-story "brick studio" in the rear.  The total cost topped a quarter of a million in today's dollars.
John Reynolds Morron, United States Passport photograph 1925
Morron's residency here was not without upheaval.  In 1922 he went on trial accused of cement price-fixing.  On the stand he denied that there had ever been "an agreement or understanding between his company and any other" for fixing prices or controlling distribution of cement.
Another view of the front parlor taken when the Cross family was here shows no chandelier, suggesting it was Belle Morron who installed the antique crystal fixtures in place today.  Note the gas sconces stationed strangely enough on the columns.  photo by Wurts Bros. from the collection of the Museum of the City of New York
The opening between the front and back parlor was necessarily narrowed to accommodate Morron's 1919 elevator (hidden within the walls separating the two parlors and entered from the hallway).   photograph by the author
And then in June the following year a witness jotted down the license plate number of the get-away car used in the holdup of Joseph Szabo.  The three perpetrators had robbed the businessman of $887.  Unfortunately, the plate number came back to John R. Morron. On July 19 detectives entered Morron's garage and examined his automobile.  The New York Times reported that it "had not left the garage in at least a week, and that the plates gave no evidence of having been temporarily removed."   The witness had apparently incorrectly remembered the tag number. A few weeks earlier Morron's name had been linked with another run-in with the law; although this one was much less serious.  Proud of his aristocratic residence, Morron hired Connecticut artist Ozias Dodge to make a sketch of the house.  On May 17, 1923 he began, but, according to The New York Times, "He found he could not get far enough back from the house to get all the trees of the Morrin [sic] home in the perspective of his drawing without climbing over the fence of Washington Square Park."  The Morron butler kindly brought a chair from the house for the artist to use. Washington Square in 1923, however, was far different from today.  Park goers were expected to stay on the pathways and the grass was strictly off limits.  But Dodge had been promised a permit to "work on the forbidden ground" by his friend, the Secretary of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  Dodge's mistake was that in his hurry he did not bother getting that permit. The artist needed only five minutes on the grass to complete the sketch and had been there three minutes when he was ordered to move by Patrolman Harry J. Booth.  Dodge refused.  "He said he had worked all over New York and even in Paris without being treated that way before."  Patrolman Booth lost his patience and arrested him.
The bronze lions, seen here in 1932, were later stolen.  Only one was recovered.  The plaster copies made from it now grace the newels and the original is kept safely inside an NYU building.  photograph by Gottscho-Schleisner, Inc from the collection of the Museum of the City of New York
At the Essex Market Court Dodge pleaded guilty "but contended that the policeman had not shown common sense."  He was given a suspended sentence and advised not to go back to the same spot to complete the sketch. Belle died around 1945 and John died at his summer residence in Littleton, New Hampshire on June 25, 1950.  He was 82. No. 6 was acquired by New York University later that year.  It now held the leases on Nos. 1 through 6.  Gently renovated for office space, it was joined internally to Nos. 5 and 7 by doorways placed in unobtrusive locations on different floors.

Today the former Saul Alley mansion is home to the the administrations for both NYU's Graduate School of Arts and Science, and the Faculty of Arts and Science.  The university deserves high praise for carefully preserving so much of the historic interiors. Many thanks to NYU associate Dale Rejtmar for his invaluable input.

Atlanta: Best places to eat, drink and play
Tumblr media
Atlanta (CNN) — Downtown Atlanta is home to a host of densely packed attractions — the Georgia Aquarium, World of Coca-Cola, the Center for Civil and Human Rights, the College Football Hall of Fame and more.
But the city’s real flavor comes from its neighborhoods, and any visit to Atlanta should skew heavy on food and beverage outings, as this guide does.
So while fans in town for the Super Bowl would do well to check out what the area around the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium has to offer, they should also explore a bit beyond downtown.
Grant Park
Zoo Atlanta is home to more than 1,500 animals, including several giant pandas.
One of Atlanta’s most interesting and storied spots, Historic Oakland Cemetery (248 Oakland Ave) opened in 1850, making it the city’s oldest public park.
The graves serve as resting places and reminders of Atlanta’s layered history. Jewish, Confederate and African American grounds are all part of its 48 acres. Mayors, former slaves, athletes and authors are all buried here.
The elaborate Victorian cemetery carries its dual role as a park into the modern era. Picnickers and dog-walkers are welcome, and Oakland Cemetery is host to a whole calendar of events from music festivals to Halloween tours. Tickets for various tours can be purchased in advance.
Memorial Drive near the cemetery runs along the border of the Grant Park neighborhood to Cabbagetown and Reynoldstown, where Petit Chou (662 Memorial Dr) and Home grown (968 Memorial Dr) are top spots for breakfast or brunch.
In the evening, Golden Eagle (904 Memorial Dr) serves up expertly crafted cocktails and bites in a knock-your-socks-off space — think plush, retro hunting lodge.
For a kid-friendly outing, Zoo Atlanta (800 Cherokee Ave), located in 131-acre Grant Park, is a crowd-pleaser. The zoo is one of only four in the US to house giant pandas.
Old Fourth Ward

Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birth Home (501 Auburn Ave) is located about a mile from downtown.
The National Park Service offers ranger-led tours that are first-come, first-served and limited to 15 people. Getting to the visitor center early in the morning to sign up is key.
A block south of the MLK birth home, Atlanta’s young (and youngish) gather along Edgewood Avenue.
Among its eclectic bars: “Nerdy dive bar” with arcade games Joystick Gamebar (427 Edgewood Ave) and Sister Louisa’s Church of the Living Room and Ping Pong Emporium (466 Edgewood Ave) — Church, for short — where adult beverages meet ping pong, a church organ and all manner of irreverent religious art.
Also on Edgewood is Staplehouse (541 Edgewood Ave), named America’s best new restaurant by Bon Appetit in 2016.

The Eastside Trail of the Atlanta BeltLine connects several intown neighborhoods.

About a mile and half north, Ponce City Market is a beacon of adaptive-reuse development and premium dining and retail.
Casual chef-driven eateries — fish shack, burger joint, fried chicken, tacos, ramen, doughnuts — dominate the market’s Food Hall, located in the rehabbed 1920s Sears, Roebuck & Co. warehouse.
Ponce City Market sits along the Atlanta BeltLine, a 22-mile urban trail that, when finished, will connect 45 intown neighborhoods. This stretch, the Eastside Trail, is the place to people watch and get a sense of Atlanta’s rapid redevelopment.
A few blocks down Ponce, in the Poncey-Highland neighborhood, the Clermont Lounge (789 Ponce De Leon Ave NE) is a you-have-to-see-it-to-understand Atlanta institution where a 60-something stripper named Blondie crushes PBR cans with her breasts.
Upstairs, the trendy boutique Hotel Clermont recently opened, complete with a sultry lobby bar and a fun rooftop watering hole with great views of the city.
Midtown
The “Yayoi Kusama: Infinity Mirrors” exhibit has been a sold-out success in Atlanta.
In Midtown, the fabulous Fox Theatre (660 Peachtree St), has hosted musical acts, theater performances, movies and more in its ornate Moorish- and Egyptian-influenced auditorium since 1929. Ticketed tours of the space can be booked in advance.
The Center for Puppetry Arts (1404 Spring St) is the largest American nonprofit dedicated solely to puppet theater. There’s a museum with a Jim Henson Collection and a Global Collection, rotating performances (for kids and adults), workshops and other programs.
The High Museum of Art (1280 Peachtree St) is wrapping up its blockbuster showing of “Yayoi Kusama: Infinity Mirrors.”
Advance tickets are sold out, but for the patient and optimistic visitor, the museum offers 100 walk-up tickets to the Kusama exhibition each day. Lines for those tickets begin several hours before the museum opens. There’s also a cache of tickets going on sale on February 5 for the final week of the exhibition (February 11-17).
Nearby, 200-plus acre Piedmont Park is Atlanta’s biggest city park and a hub for exercisers, meanderers and a host of festivals and events.
Hungry now? Empire State South (999 Peachtree St) serves creative takes on Southern cuisine, while Lure (1106 Crescent Ave) is a stylish seafood restaurant.
East Atlanta Village
Tumblr media
Banshee is an upscale restaurant addition to the no-frills East Atlanta neighborhood.

Southeast of downtown, East Atlanta Village is home to a bevy of casual bars (and food, too) at the intersection of Flat Shoals and Glenwood avenues.
The Earl (488 Flat Shoals Ave) offers consistently good bar food, a winning dive-bar atmosphere and a full schedule of local and national bands in the back room. (Take note: smoking is allowed inside.)
Down the block, the menu at gastro-pub Argosy (470 Flat Shoals Ave) ranges from hot chicken to charred octopus, plus a long list of craft beers.
Across the street and down an alley, Gaja (491 Flat Shoals Ave) offers contemporary takes on Korean classics alongside cocktails, soju shots and so on.
Mary’s (1287 Glenwood Ave) is often voted Atlanta’s best gay bar. Tuesday night karaoke is popular at the 21+ spot.
East Atlanta’s newest and swankiest dining option, Banshee (1271 Glenwood Ave) showcases locally sourced ingredients, plus creative cocktails from its arresting turquoise and indigo bar.
West End
The historic West End neighborhood is a classic Atlanta story — an area that started out as a transportation hub (a trolley stop), hit hard times but is bouncing back strong now.
One thing driving that resurgence is the West End Trail portion of the BeltLine. And for those who find the Eastside portion too crowded, you might find a little more elbow room here.
For a classic soul-food experience, the no-frills Q Time delivers (1120 Ralph David Abernathy Blvd). You can fill up on large portions of delicious Southern favorites such as turnip greens, black-eyed peas, fried chicken and peach cobbler.
If that’s too heavy, the opposite end of the food spectrum is nearby at Tassili’s Raw Reality Cafe (1059 Ralph David Abernathy Blvd), with a menu of raw vegan delights such as Moroccan Couscous or their Original Kale, a wrap with kale salad, avocado and tomato.
West End also has two sightseeing attractions worth a visit:
The Hammond House Museum (503 Peeples St) is an excellent place to learn more about the contributions of visual artists of African descent. The museum has 18 works by influential 20th-century artist Romare Bearden.
The Wren’s Nest (1050 Ralph David Abernathy Blvd) is an Queen Anne architectural pleasure and the former home of Southern newspaper writer and fiction author Joel Chandler Harris of “Uncle Remus” fame. It’s a close-up look at how an upper-middle class family lived at the end of the 19th century.
West Midtown
Howell Mill Road and the surrounding area is a hot spot for shopping and dining.
Long a hub for furniture, fabric and all things design, the Westside has filled in with restaurants, boutiques and chain stores.
Bacchanalia (1460 Ellsworth Industrial Blvd), opened in 1993 by chefs/owners Anne Quatrano and Clifford Harrison, has been at the top of Atlanta’s fine dining scene for decades.
Entertainmentwise, The Painted Duck (976 Brady Ave) offers duck pin bowling in a glamorous venue also equipped with shuffleboard, horse shoes, air hockey, etc.
And in an area teeming with craft cocktails, Northside Tavern (1058 Howell Mill Road) is the spot for a bottle of beer, lives blues and a game of pool. This smoky dive bar dates back to 1972, and it’s holding its own as new buildings rise up around it.
CNN’s Forrest Brown contributed to this story.

WHAT TO WATCH THIS WEEKEND July 26, 2019  - ONCE UPON A TIME … IN HOLLYWOOD, SKIN
Gonna try to make this a lighter column this week since I’m still recovering from a combination of Comic-Con and the heat wave that struck New York last weekend.
Tumblr media
Of course, the big movie of the weekend is Quentin Tarantino’s ONCE UPON A TIME IN… HOLLYWOOD (Sony), which has such an amazing concept and trailer and cast that I’m not sure what more I can say about it besides my review below. It does have an amazing cast led by Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio and Margot Robbie with an amazing supporting cast around them. Oh, just read the review…
My Once Upon a Time… Review
Plus you can read more about the movie’s box office prospects over at The Beat.
LIMITED RELEASES
Tumblr media
The one limited release I do recommend is Guy Nattiv’s SKIN (A24/DirecTV), which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last year and then played Tribeca earlier this year. It stars Jamie Bell as the heavily-tattooed Bryon “Babs” Widner, a violent white supremacist part of a Midwest group led by Vera Farmiga and Bill Camp. When Bryon meets a single mother of three girls played by Danielle Macdonald (Patti Cake$), he starts to realize that his dangerous violent and racist actions are destroying him, so he turns to Mike Colter as a FBI agent looking to turn white supremacists, to save him. Based on the true story of Bryon, who actually did try to get out of the white supremacist ring and had all his tattoos removed surgically. Nattiv is a really talented filmmaker, and if his name or the title of the movie sounds familiar, that’s because he won the Oscar for live action short earlier this year for a semi-related movie with the same title.  More importantly, the film marks a career best for Bell, who just carries himself so differently that it’s hard to believe that it’s the same actor who played Bernie Taupin in Rocketman. I definitely recommend seeking this one out in select theaters and On Demand this Friday.
Also, I’ll have an interview with Jamie Bell over at The Beatlater this week and another one with director Guy Nattiv over at Next Best Picture very soon, as well.
There are a number of great docs to check out this week, but one definitely worth checking out is Avi Belkin’s MIKE WALLACE IS HERE (Magnolia), which looks at the controversial career of newsman and interviewer who helped make CBS’s “60 Minutes” one of the hottest news programs on television even while being persecuted for his “Gotcha” tactics with some of the great world leaders. This is a fantastic doc that’s assembled from a lot of archival footage of Wallace’s interview as well as a more recent conversation with his “60 Minutes” co-host Morly Safer.sIt opens at the Landmark at 57 Streetand Angelika in New York on Friday, as well as L.A. Landmark 12 and then expands to other citieson August 2.
Another doc that’s more cinema verité but still interesting is Ljubomir Stefanov & Tamara Kotevska’s HONEYLAND (NEON), which follows a woman named Hatidze, living in the mountains of Macedonia with her ailing mother who makes a living with beekeeping, a practice that runs into issue when a family moves in next door to her who threatens her livelihood.  It opens at the Quad Cinemain New York
Now, we get to the movies I haven’t had a chance to see just yet…
I do want to see Waad al-Kateab and Edward Watts’s FOR SAMA (PBS Distribution), which trades Waad’s life through five years of the Aleppo uprising in Syria, as she falls in love, gets married and gives birth with the conflict around her. It’s told as a message to Waad’s daughter Sama.
Entertainment and The Comedy director Rick Alverson’s The Mountain (Kino Lorber/Vice Studios)starring Jeff Goldblum and Tye Sheridan opens at the IFC Center in New York and Landmark Nuart in L.A. Friday. Sheridan plays an introverted photographer in the ‘50s who joins a legendary lobotomist (Goldblum) on a tour to promote the doctor’s procedure, becoming enamored with a young woman played by Hannah Gross. The movie also stars Denis Lavant and Udo Kier, and I hope to check it out although I have not been a fan of Alverson’s work up until now.
Opening at New York’s Village East Friday and in L.A. at the Laemmle Music Hall is Benjamin Gilmour’s Jirga starring Sam Smith – no, not the singer – as an Australian soldier who returns to his village after being accused of war crimes, so he puts his life at the mercy of the village’s justice system, the Jirga.
James Longley’s documentary Angels are Made of Light (Grasshopper Films), opening at New York’s Film Forum Wednesday, follows three Afghan brothers in war-ton Kabul.
Caper Van Diem from Starship Troopers stars in Chris Helton’s Dead Water (Lionsgate/Saban Films) a man who invites a friend and his beautiful wife onto his new yacht so they can relax, which leads to a deadly game once they’re boarded by a modern-day pirate.  It opens in select theaters and On Demand.
David Mahmoudieh’s See You Soon (Vertical) is a love story between a US soccer star with a career-threatening injury who has a romance with a Russian single mother.
Opening at the IFC Center in New York is Austrian filmmaker Marie Kreutzer’s psychological thriller The Ground Beneath My Feet (Strand Releasing) about a woman named Lola (Valerie Pachner, winner of the Maguery Prize), who is trying to succeed in the business world while having a secret relationship with her boss Elise and dealing with her older sister’s mental illness, which leads to a suicide attempt.
STREAMING AND CABLE
Karim Amer and Jehane Noujaim’s doc The Great Hack looks at the data company Cambridge Analytica and how it used social media to try to affect (successfully) the 2016 U.S. Presidential election. It streams on Netflix starting Wednesday
Netflix also has three new foreign films streaming this week:
Olivier Afonso’s Girls with Balls is a French horror-comedy about a women’s volleyball team who are terrorized by a group of hunters while stranded in the woods.  Sebastian Schindel’s Spanish psychological thriller El Hijo (The Son)is about a 50-year-old painter who is getting ready to have a baby with his new wife until she becomes obsessed with the baby isolating him. From Spain comes Jorge M. Fontana’s Boiabout a chauffeur who drives two Chinese businessmen around Barcelona and getting caught up in an adventure with them.
Also, the 7thseason of Orange is the New Black – 7thSeason!? Man, I need to catch up – debuts on Friday.
I’m pretty excited thatThe Boys series is beginning on Amazon Prime on Friday, cause I generally like the work of Garth Ennis and artist Darick Robertson, even though I never got as into this Dynamite series as much as I should have.
REPERTORY
METROGRAPH (NYC):
Japanese actor Machiko Kyō, who passed away in May at the age of 95, gets a full-on retrospective running through August 1. I’ve seen Akira Kurosawa’s Rashomonand maybe a couple others but this is mostly focusing on her ‘50s work, including Ozu’s Floating Weeds, and I might have to try to check some of these out. Metrograph is also opening a restoration of Rob Nillson’s 1996 film Chalk, a drama centered around a pool hall with Nillson in person on Friday and Saturday nights. This week’s Late Nites at Metrograph is Pedro Almodovar’s excellent 1989 film Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!starring Antonio Banderas, whilePlaytime: Family Matinees is screening George Stevens’ 1953 Western Shane.
THE NEW BEVERLY  (L.A.):
Well, it looks like Tarantino has decided to use his own theater to show Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood day and night through the end of the month and most of those shows are sold out so… The couple exceptions are Weds afternoon’s screening of the James Bond movie You Only Live Twice, the Weds. night George Hamilton double feature of Evel Knievel  (1971) and Jack of Diamonds (1967),  the weekend’s KIDDEE MATINEE of Herbie Fully Loaded (yes, the 2005 movie starring Lindsay Lohan) and then Martin Scorsese’s The Aviator(2004) on Monday afternoon.
FILM FORUM (NYC):
The Forum’s amazing Burt Lancaster retrospective continues this weekend with classics like The Sweet Smell of Success (1957) and From Here to Eternity  (1953) on Friday, as well as Criss Cross (1949)on Saturday/Sunday and Luchino Visconti’s The Leopard (1963) on Sunday. Monday is a  1948 double feature of All My Sons &Sorry Wrong Number, while Tuesday is double features of The Crimson Pirate (1952) and Jacques Tournuer’s The Flame and the Arrow (1950). Also the restoration of Robert Siodmak’s The Killers (1946)has been extended for select screenings starting Friday.
EGYPTIAN THEATRE (LA):
On Thursday, this week’s installment of “Highballs and Screwballs” is His Girl Friday (1940) with  Call Northside 777  (1948). On Friday, Helen Slater Jr. will be on  hand for a double feature of Superman  (1978) with Supergirl  (1984). Saturday sees a six-film “Warner Bros. Horror/Sci-Fi Marathon” of House on Haunted Hill (1958), The Thing from Another World (1951), Tod Browning’s Freaks  (1932),Them! (1954), The Haunting  (1953) and Jacques Tourneur’s Cat People(1942) – some real classics in there.
QUAD CINEMA (NYC):
I got to watch three of the six movies in the “Fresh Meat: Giallo Restorations Part II” over the weekend and you can still see a few of them over the next couple days.
IFC CENTER (NYC)
Starting Friday and running through August 15, the IFC Center is running Abbas Kiorastami: A Retrospective (Janus Films), the most comprehensive retrospective of the late Iranian filmmaker with film critic Godfrey Chesire doing a few discussions of Kiorastami’s work including the World Premiere of a restoration of his “Koker Trilogy” AND the theater is offering special Ticket Packs, so you can plan on seeing multiple films in the series.
FILM OF LINCOLN CENTER (NYC):
This is Cinema Now: 21st Century Debuts  continues through the end of the month with a number of highlights including Saturday night’s double feature of Jordan Peele’s Get Out and Jennifer Kent’s The Babadook. (Oddly, Ms. Kent’s second feature The Nightingaleopens next week!)
BAM CINEMATEK (NYC):
I’m going to try to write about BAM’s new series We Can’t Even: Millennials on Film without snickering or being snarky, mainly because I can’t believe it’s taken so long for one of these rep/arthouses to do something like this. Running from July 24 through August 6, the line-up is actually pretty impressive in terms of recent movies, ranging from Natalie Portman’s Vox Lux to the Oscar-winning Moonlight, Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird, Sofia Coppola’s The Bling Ring, David Fincher’s The Social Network and much more.
Actually, my bud Jordan Hoffman wrote a story on this series for AM New York if you need any more convincing.
MUSEUM OF THE MOVING IMAGE (NYC):
Astoria’s premiere arthouses continues the series “Barbara Hammer: Superdyke” through the weekend, and they’re showing the Oscar-nominated animated film The Secret of the Kellsthrough the weekend. This weekend also is a series called “Verneuil Populaire: Vintage Thrillers from France’s Genre Maestro” which includes The Sicilian Clan (1969) on Friday, A Monkey in Winter (1962) and two more on Saturday, and The Burglars (1971) and Fear over the City (1975) on Sunday.
ROXY CINEMA (NYC)
Wednesday night is another screening of The Fearless Vampire Killers (1967), starring Roman Polanski and Sharon Tate – the film on which they met – plus Friday and Sunday, the Roxy is showing Valley of the Dolls (1967), also starring Tate. Could this be meant as a tie-in to Tarantino’s film? Could be…
LANDMARK THEATRES NUART (LA):
Friday’s midnight movie is Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park.
AEROin L.A. and MOMAin New York are both going through renovations.
Next week… Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw!

The 340B Program: Mandatory Reporting, Alternative Eligibility Criteria Should Be Top Priorities For Congress
Policymakers have renewed their focus on how the 340B drug discount program functions among “safety net” hospitals, particularly Disproportionate Share  Hospitals (DSH), which qualify for the 340B program because they provide a sufficient amount of inpatient care to Medicaid and low-income Medicare beneficiaries. In June, a leaked executive order from the Trump administration suggested that the program would start to tie the volume of discounted drugs to indigent patient volume. In July, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) proposed cuts to physician reimbursements for outpatient drugs covered under Medicare’s medical benefit (Part B) for 340B DSH hospitals. Tomorrow, October 11th, the House of Representatives’ Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee will hold a hearing titled, “Examining How Covered Entities Utilize the 340B Drug Pricing Program.”
Why choose this focus for the October hearing? 340B is a drug discount program that provides qualified hospitals with a 20 percent to 50 percent discount on the average manufacturer price of outpatient prescription drugs, and the opportunity to generate revenue from sales of 340B drugs to insured patients in order to fund safety-net care. While the program provides a vital source of revenue for some participants, there is increasing concern that DSH hospitals and their affiliated clinics and contract pharmacies are abusing the program by pursuing profits rather than ensuring patient access to needed care. DSH hospitals and their affiliates can behave in this way because—in contrast to the public health clinics that also qualify for 340B drug discounts—DSH hospitals and their affiliates are not required to report on how much revenue they generate from the sale of discounted drugs, nor demonstrate how they use revenues to enhance safety-net care.
Consequently, anecdotes supporting the safety-net dedication—or profiteering—of 340B participants fuel the current policy debate. Previous assessments of program functioning have largely focused on limited samples of cherry-picked 340B participants. Tomorrow’s hearing before the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee features testimony from only three hospital systems participating in 340B (Johns Hopkins Hospital, Northside Health Systems, and Mission Health Systems, Inc).
In this post, we provide statistics on the safety-net engagement and financial stability of all 340B DSH hospitals in 2015. Our analysis suggests that anecdotes are not sufficient to understand the program; DSH hospitals that participate in 340B are in actuality quite diverse. Our results suggest the arguments of opponents and proponents of proposed reform might hold some merit. A priority for policymakers contemplating program reform should be more systematic and timely data on participating DSH hospitals’ 340B revenue and safety-net service provision.
Aggregate Statistics On 340B Participating DSH Hospitals
We analyzed administrative data from 2015 Medicare Cost Reports linked to the HRSA’s 340B Provider List. Together, these data are the most comprehensive, publicly available data on 340B participants. We compared the median and interquartile ranges—the range from the 25th to the 75th percentile—of safety-net engagement and financial stability of non-profit and public DSH 340B participants to the national median for public and non-profit hospitals in 2015 (Exhibit 1).
We found that in 2015 the median uncompensated care burden among the 1,042 340B participants in our data was 3.4 percent, which was only slightly higher than the median for all non-profit and public hospitals (3.0 percent). However, a quarter of 340B providers spent less than 1.9 percent of their budget on uncompensated care. Those in the top quartile spent twice as much as the national median (6.5 percent). This suggests a substantial amount of variation among participants.
The distribution was similar for the Medicaid share of total discharges: more than 25 percent of 340B hospitals cared for fewer Medicaid beneficiaries than the national median. For a quarter of these hospitals, 22.6 percent or more of their inpatients were covered by Medicaid.
Operating margin provides a measure of financial stability for hospitals. The underlying reason for allowing DSH hospitals to generate revenue off the program is to improve their financial stability. Looking at hospital operating margins, the median operating margin was lower among 340B hospitals (-1.6 percent) than among public and non-profit hospitals in the US (-0.8 percent). However, the interquartile range of 340B hospital operating margin ranged from -9.3 percent to 4.8 percent, suggesting that some 340B DSH participants operated at a substantial loss, while at least a quarter of participants operated with a comfortable margin.
Finally, we considered the DSH patient percentage—the criterion for entry into the 340B program. To qualify, hospitals must have a DSH patient percentage in excess of 11.75 percent. We found that the median 340B hospital’s DSH patient percentage exceeded the national median for public and non-profit hospitals, but the 25th percentile of the distribution was just above the threshold of 11.75 percent. This suggests that at least a quarter of hospitals just barely qualified for the program.
Upon further inspection, we found that many of the hospitals with the highest operating margins were also those that provided the least uncompensated care. The opposite was also true—the hospitals that provided the most uncompensated care also had the lowest operating margins. Furthermore, we found that there was little correlation between county-level uninsured rates, likely a good proxy of demand for health care by the uninsured, and the adjusted DSH patient percentage.
Implications For Reform Efforts
In 2015, the DSH hospitals participating in the 340B drug discount program exhibited varying financial stability and safety net care provision. Therefore, policymakers should exercise caution when drawing conclusions about the program or the likely effects of reform efforts based on the testimony or documented experience of a handful of participating DSH hospitals. Our results echo previous assessments, suggesting that the current breadth and diversity of DSH hospitals and their affiliates participating in 340B could be distorting the program away from its primary intent to serve patients with a limited ability to pay and contributing to wasteful spending.
In the absence of systematic assessments of program functioning, hospitals, and even some lawmakers, have argued forcefully against the current reform proposals, citing financial destabilization and cuts to services that could hurt patients who rely on the safety net. In contrast, the authors of the proposed reforms have suggested they offer benefits: targeting discounted drugs to low-income patients might improve pharmaceutical access for the uninsured, and reimbursement cuts could benefit Medicare patients by reducing their out-of-pocket spending on drugs covered under the medical benefit. Under current law, Medicare beneficiaries are required to pay 20 percent of Medicare’s reimbursement with no catastrophic limit, unless they are also covered by supplemental insurance. Our results suggest the arguments of both opponents and proponents of proposed reform might hold some merit.
Where do we go from here? We believe an important first step towards reorienting the program for the aid of patients who rely on the safety net is systematic, timely data collection. Currently, all hospitals are required to report on selected financial and service metrics in their annual Medicare cost reports. DSH hospitals are also required to report on their community benefit activities to the Internal Revenue Service to retain their tax-exempt status. Congress could build on these sunshine efforts, requiring hospitals to report on 340B drug volume, revenues generated, and safety-net services funded by these revenues to CMS and/or the IRS.
A second step is a discussion about what defines a safety-net medical provider in the 21st century. The DSH patient percentage is an antiquated measure harkening back to a time when hospitals largely provided inpatient care. It is by definition an inaccurate measure of safety-net care provision across inpatient and outpatient settings. The inadequacy of this metric is evidenced by the fact that 40 percent of all non-profit and public hospitals in our sample met the criteria for participation, yet it seems unlikely that such a high fraction of hospitals meet the Institute of Medicine’s definition of safety-net providers. A renewed focus on the care provided to uninsured and underinsured patients in both settings better fits the current organization of medical providers in the US. Congress should consider alternative metrics.
Exhibit 1: National Characteristics of 340B Providers, 2015
Source: 2015 hospital cost reports matched to the 340B provider list. The sample includes 2,639 non-profit and public general acute care hospitals in the 50 US states and the District of Columbia from Medicare hospital cost reports. We identified 1,042 hospitals that were currently participating in the 340B program according to the Health Resources and Services Administration’s 340B provider list. Uncompensated care is defined as the fraction of total hospital expenditures that are spent on charity care or hospital bad debt. The Medicaid share of total discharges is the fraction of total discharges that are covered by Medicaid. The hospital operating margin is defined as (operating revenue-less contractual allowances-operating expenditures)/(operating revenue-less contractual allowances). The operating margin was winsorized at the 5th and 95th percentiles to minimize the influence of outliers. The DSH patient percentage is defined as the sum of the Medicaid fraction of total utilization and the social security income eligible Medicare fraction of total Medicare utilization. This fraction is adjusted according to hospital size, and urban status.

Welcome to September's San Antonio Market Update,. Let’s take a look a residential real-estate activity in San Antonio during the month of September. The number of active listings was down 10% from one year earlier, and down 1% from the previous month. This smaller inventory means that buyers who waited to buy may have had a smaller selection to choose from. As you can see, the median listing price for the month was just under 210-thousand dollars. Compared to last year, the average number of days units spent on the market before being sold was down 3%. This lower number of days may signal a positive trend in the local inventory-turnover rate. The median sale price was just under 170-thousand dollars. The number of units sold increased 2% year-over-year, and decreased 14% month-over-month. Higher year-over-year figures indicate that more buyers have been finding what they're looking for. Thanks for watching. We hope you use this information to make smart, informed decisions in your upcoming real-estate transactions. Feel free to contact me for more information or further assistance."
