Why hello there! It's been a while since I've draw anything SU related, and even longer since I've actually been on tumblr lol

But I recently went down memory lane of old drawings I did and suddenly got the urge to draw again after not feeling it for years! SO! Here we have some forms for Garnet and Amethyst for my Red Diamond au! As well as slightly updated forms for Blue, Yellow, and Pink Pearl for my Steven and The Stevens AU. Some MORE slightly updated forms for my CG!Spinel, and a Ruby and Sapphire corruption lol

Spinel agere headcanons

Regresses around 5-8 years old 

Very frequent regressor. The kind of gem spinel is means that she was designed to act childish and be playful and so it’s very easy for her to slip in and out of headspace, sometimes without noticing 

Her regression is a part of her. She wouldn’t be who she is without it even if she didn’t have an exact word for it before she learned about Stevens regression  

Spinel is very active and her physical form is designed to be able to move in a number of ways so so she is almost constantly moving 

Will wander off if she isn’t being held/held onto in some way. She never goes too far but still it can be startling for the diamonds to turn to look at where she just was and then not see her there 

She has developed a bad habit of hiding her more unhappy emotions with a mask of fun and excitement and she is still pretty good at doing that no matter what age she is feeling. It can be hard to tell when she’s genuinely upset sometimes 

She’s pretty talkative while little usually however if she’s sad or really upset she will go completely silent and it’s very difficult to coax her into talking again until she’s been cheered up 

For the most part she is very energetic and enthusiastic. She tends to be very hyper and easily excitable, always running around 

After learning what sleeping is and how to do it she absolutely naps. Her favorite place to nap is cradled in blue’s hair right up against her gem 

Spinel loves to be in the hands or on the shoulder of the diamonds and can be found in their arms or crawling over some other part of their body a large amount of the time 

She loves to bathe with blue in the pool especially when blue plays splashing games with her or blows bubbles 

She loves to play with the diamonds and is up for almost any game (although she won’t play hide and go seek became its stresses her out to much and brings back unpleasant memories which she learned the hard way) 

She has things meant for entertaining such as juggling balls, art supplies, and various colorful toys that she plays with while regressed 

The diamonds absolutely spoil her and if she so much as looks at a toy one of them has already purchased it for her 

The diamonds all work together to take care of her similarly to how they cared for pink but better. They see spinel’s regression as a second chance to prove they have gotten better 

Gets called cutie pie, wiggles, little jester, sweetheart, treasure, precious one, and spinny by the diamonds 

Spinel really doesn’t respond well to being in trouble due to her deep fears of abandonment. Luckily for her the diamonds really don’t like to give out any discipline and are pretty permissive of any and all behaviors from her (although yellow will occasionally scold her) 

She needs to be with at least one of the diamonds when she is feeling little or she will panic. She hates to be alone

While I like Steven Universe and all of it's misgivings (even though I feel some parts of it could be written a bit more realistically, like Kevin and Steven's weird animosity angle), I always felt that the Movie adding Spinel was kind of a lazy and thoughtless decision just to make Pink Diamond more cruddy than she really is. I get that as part of the regime that considered castes wouldn't treat their lower halves with such kindess as they would the parts they belonged to, but it just seemed rather out of character for Pink to discard Spinel and make her stay in her garden for so damn long, if we were to assume Pink actually did shatter her Pearl accidentally. If there was more instances of Pink Diamond being that volatile in the show and not a lot of heresay (The Crystal Gems talking about Pink like she's an spoilt brat, for example), I'd probably would buy it more. As it stands, there's too little information thanks to the nature of the show, and it really just feels like after the revelation of Pink and Rose Quartz being one and the same, they forgot to give more humanizing qualities to Rose, especially sinc she's such a trigger for Steven in Future.

Spinel, to me, only exists to make Pink Diamond more cruel than she actually is, and I don't actually like Spinel because of that.

I agree with you in part. I don't think Spinel exists only to make Pink look more cruel, but I think the show started villainizing her a little too much in general, culminating in Future.

The idea is sound on paper. Present a character as a paragon of unreachable goodness, to the point that Steven feels like everyone expects him to measure up to his dead mom, and then start showing the cracks in her shining armor: she looked down on the same humans she swore to protect, she bubbled Bismuth, she shattered Pink Diamond and is the reason Homeworld hates everything to do with Earth, she was Pink Diamond and lied to all of the CGs and forced Pearl to keep her secret. We see her at her best, and slowly we go backwards to see at her worst. The idea is that we're supposed to put together the events in reverse order and appreciate her character development... but in practice, it means that Steven just starts to resent Rose and have an attitude of "yes mom sucks, must be a day ending in Y"

Future is what irked me the most. The last time Rose is plot relevant, we discover that she literally traumatized Pink Pearl through a temper tantrum. The last time we see Rose, it's her painting stuffed inside Lion's mane, out of sight and out of mind. The last time we hear her name, Steven is angrily comparing Greg to her. Everyone has moved on from her, but not in a healthy way, but in an almost... cancelled way? The narrative put too much focus on her bad actions, and seemingly forgot that Pink did a massive work on herself to do the closest thing a Gem can to grow up.

Spinel is just one of those examples. As an antagonist, she works, she's out of her mind with emotional pain, Pink and not Rose hurt her (so Steven can't just tell her the truth, like she did with Jasper and the Diamonds), and her inner conflict is abandonment issues, which how in the hell is Steven supposed to solve? He doesn't, the Diamonds do. But... yeah. Since Rose isn't around to defend herself, a recurring theme in SU, we never learn why she never came back for Spinel. Maybe because the portals were broken! But the narrative just leaves us with "Pink was a jerk and abandoned her friend because she was annoying" (or because she was meant to replace Pink Pearl in a shallow, insulting way, but still).

This is a big flaw of trying to paint the complexities of a dead character. We have to rely on hearsay, different opinions, and so does the titular character. Steven decided that Rose was a liar, and that's where the show stopped. It sucks, because Rose is my favorite character in the show and back in the day I swear that she was more hated than the Diamonds :<

I socialized too much and I can’t draw now, so I’m gonna get my thoughts out by infodumping my au. It’s gonna be all over the place and full of different subjects cause I’m combining all the drafts I had together, but I’ll make it work.

To begin, I was thinking about abt what would happen if Steven met an off color, like a gem who emerged “wrong” and was in hiding, or a fusion in need of help.

And I totally think he would want to help them, but he’s a human with no power, so what does he do? Sneak them into his and Star’s room to ask the pink diamond for help.

I think it would be cute if Steven and Star secretly helped out off colors as much as they could, and when the CGs kept trying to convince him that Star wasn’t a good person and had been manipulating Steven, he’d be like “…mmmm you ever actually met him? Cause he’s like a (insert some sort of gem term version of saint)”.

(It also just occurred to me that Steven and Star are twins, and while Steven was born, it took Star a second to form, which means Steven is the older twin. I feel like that’s funny)

I’ve been thinking about Steven’s outfit and why he’s got the clown getup in the first place. Because Star would never dress baby Steeb that way cause he doesn’t want Steven to feel like his job is to entertain others. Although I don’t think Steven considers clowns or jesters as entertainers specifically, but moreso that their jobs are to make people happy.

And his first friend was Spinel, who’s purpose is to make other people happy and be their friend, and if Steven could be any gem he’d probably want to be a spinel. I think he wants all these things and dresses this way out of some unspoken guilt. He realized really young how much Star was sacrificing and suffering for Steven and how out of his control it all really was. I think of those kids who have parents who have financial problems, so they feel guilty and like a burden for having needs.

Anyways getting off track again, I think he dresses not like a clown but like a spinel because he wants to make Star and all the other hardworking gems happy, probably because he doesn’t think he’s good for anything else.

It’s kind of sad and of course part of it is just because he (and I) thinks clown outfit are cool and fun and colorful, but I wanted to explain that a bit cause Steven would only ever have that conversation with his future therapist lol

Also, I think the idea of Steven never being attracted to anyone ever until Connie is pretty funny. Like no doubt there was no education whatsoever regarding romantic relationships on Homeworld, sure he’s heard about gems who loved each other so much that they fused for seemingly no purpose, but he can’t fuse and he’s not a gem. And Star told him bits and pieces about the zoo (and maybe Rose) but that’s still not enough.

And then he meets Connie and for awhile he doesn’t realize it but he finds this other human so beautiful and cool and talented, he likes her hair and voice and probably thinks she deserves to be told that, while Connie who developed a crush on him first is trying not to die at constantly listening to Steven say things to her that sounds like blatant flirting even when she knows he probably doesn’t even get it.

I also think for awhile he would just be completely oblivious to his feelings, and then he gets to Earth and meets Garnet, and Greg tells him about his relationship with Rose, and he just sees a wide variety of human bonds and at some point it would just click.

I think once Steven and Connie come to terms with their feelings and confessed to each other, Connie would want Steven to seriously educate himself on human relationships and communication. Just because she doesn’t want him to walk into something he’s not entirely prepared for, and she’d want him to be sure he actually likes her too.

OHHH I just realized I never talk about what Star actually does in his time as a diamond!!

I always think it’s silly cause he inherited the pink diamond court from his mom, but the first pink diamond and him are two very different personalities, and he doesn’t actually care that much for what he does (probably bc his coded purpose isn’t to be the new pink diamond). Steven has fun with it tho.

Anyways, I always felt like Blue and Yellow Diamond were taking care of production, like I felt like they oversee things like gem kindergartens, colonizing planets, maybe designing new technology, etc,. While White Diamond would oversee gem laws, the identity of her amazing empire, basically just, making sure everything is a “perfect reflection of her”. She already colonized so many planets, I wonder if she stopped cause she used up all her essence… I’m getting off topic again nvm.

But Pink, the littlest diamond, definitely took care of culture and celebrations, like come on she used to throw balls for her diamond families’ accomplishments. And Star totally inherited that.

I also imagine his court would be considered a bit controversial compared to the other courts, which often times has him being set apart from the other diamonds even further… lots of older gems and the diamonds don’t have a lot of respect for him, I mean all gems under the diamonds treat him as a diamond, but he’s not oblivious to the very quiet rumors that are said about him.

And I mean, he doesn’t need nor want their respect, it certainly wouldn’t be mutual if he had it. He’s got the respect of his own court, and he cares for his gems too. Steven always comes first, but he does feel responsible for his gems. And I think a lot of his gems ended up embodying his views in some ways. Especially if he’s made gems.

Has he made gems with his own diamond essence? That is if he did assist Blue and Yellow with gem production for his court.. but do we know how long it takes to make a batch of gems? He’s only like, sixteen years old, and it’s gonna take way longer then that, if he had a human life span would he even live to see his gems? If not that’s kinda sad. But also the other diamonds might not even let him near gem production or colonizing planets. Not for a longggg time.

As for Star’s personal views, which I think I’ve mentioned a few times, is a bit in the grey area.

Ultimately, he is a prisoner on his own planet, an a lot of his choices and actions were because the diamonds were holding Steven’s life over his head. His morals and values, as well as other things, needs more time to build because he’s not actually that free to explore it all. I think after the empire is liberated, and he’s gotten a good amount of rest, he’d spend some time trying to figure out who he really is beyond Steven’s other half.

As I’ve said, Steven comes first. He was made for Steven, albeit it was an accident, but Star takes it very seriously and loves his kid very much. But he’ll do good when possible. Like I said at the beginning of this post, Steven sometimes brings off colors in need of help to Star. And he’ll do what he can to help. Healing a cracked gem, showing them to safer areas of the kindergarten, getting them off of Homeworld if he can, even pardoning gems in trial who did nothing wrong but would have been considered guilty.

A lot of those values come from Rose Quartz. After all, in a way, she became him. And part of her stuck with him. He feels horrible when he’s forced to hurt an innocent gem. He couldn’t care less if a gem actually did something wrong, though.

Well I had a lot of fun writing this, but it is a bit chaotic, so I hope it was cohesive enough.

Pink, fearing for her friends after the war gets a little too serious, abandons her rebellion without warning and returns to homeworld. Brings only lion with her, abandoning Pearl, Garnet and Amethyst. She tells them nothing, they feel betrayed, especially Pearl.

Era 2, 4,000 years ago

Diamonds launch an attack, corrupting any gems left on the planet, the CG’s somehow manage to survive and avoid it (I like to think they used the fountain somehow)

Diamonds begin to make plans to use earth for cluster experiments

19th century

Greg is born in the zoo

(22 years later) Pink meets Greg and falls in love with him

(80 years later) Greg dies, after Pink has conceived Steven, she consistently alters her body (and does some other alien race sciencey stuff) to delay his birth, due to grief of losing her husband and fearing what the Diamonds may do to Steven.

20th century

(2002) Steven is born

Sunstone is in charge of him

(2004) Bonnie and Penelope are created, they help take care of Steven

Steven is treated like Pink is playing another game by the other Diamonds (they refer to him with she/her pronouns, only Blue sometimes calls him Steven, they treat him like Pink, and as though he is as old as she was (he is not. He was only a child. White was the harshest.)

Gem fusion experiments and cluster experiments begin on earth, Steven, for the most part, partially oversees this. Yellow is mostly in charge.

(2016) Steven, aged 14, is given his mother’s colony

Did a bit of a redesign to Pink to better execute the original idea I had back when I made her :D I think she needs a better name than Pink Sapphire, but I'm not sure what else she could be since that's just what she is lol! I feel like it would be confusing to refer to her as Pink, given PD, and it would be confusing to refer to her as Sapphire bc of CG Sapphire. Truly in a pickle!

Reminder of her updated backstory:

Pink Sapphire is Pink Diamond’s personal Sapphire, customized to look pleasing to Pink (much like Spinel and Volleyball). She was poofed and bubbled by Pink Diamond after correctly predicting her faked shattering scheme in private. Pink Sapphire would’ve never reported what was to happen to the Diamonds or the future Crystal Gems, but Pink Diamond didn’t trust her to not tell anyone, so she ended up poofed, bubbled, and stored in a chest on her leg ship, forgotten to time. In conclusion, I love movies !!! But my favorite movies are those that are confident in their identities and don’t hold back. Like share your message to the fullest !!!!

I watched a lot of stop-motion movies this year. I wanna watch more studio ghibli movies next year

And maybe I should purposefully try watching bad movies… it might make me appreciate good ones more and easier see what they do right. But also. I really dont wanna watch ralph breaks the internet.

HEYY ‼️ so i mainly need help with fusion weapons this time around

Ooooooh I love weapon fusions !!!

Daggers + gauntlet= trench knife, spiky ball?

Daggers + spear= trident (kinda close to CG!Pearl's upgrade tho), a ranseur, or a leister (a multi-pronged spear used for fishing)?

Daggers + whip= urumi, whip-sword, chain whip?

Daggers + bow and arrow= slingshot, a rifle with a bayonet, or a scourge?

This next set was actually pretty difficult, but hopefully the answers are good!

Bow and arrow + spear= maybe a harpoon gun- where the bowstring becomes the string connecting to the spear, or maybe a rifle-type gun- similar to the spear + bow and arrow in the above answer?

Bow and arrow + whip= grappling hook or a rope dart. (Being honest, a harpoon gun also works for this combo too cfgcvgjh)

Bow and arrow + gauntlets= I'm imagining one of those joke extendable boxing gloves lol- otherwise you could replace the arrowhead with the glove, similar to a larping arrow- thus turning it into a blunt-force weapon instead of a piercing weapon?

Married and living happily on Earth. Steven is doing what he can as a Diamond, working with Earths government as the representative of Home World for the Gems that want to live on Earth. He’s not a fan of politics, but with Pearl and Connie, he’s able to somehow get through it.

Spinel is still doing exactly what she was made for, easing Steven’s troubles and making him laugh. Without her, he would have a much harder time carving his place in Gem and Human history.

My favourite thing about Steven Universe Future is how it discussed why a kid hero might suffer growing up.

Not by introducing new foes.

Not by creating more internal conflict.

But by NOT having any new foes and showing the world at peace.

Because Steven defined himself by the CGs conflict with Homeworld. Unlike his allies, Steven has never truly known a life outside the conflict or trying to be a Crystal Gem. Ever since he was a small child, being a Crystal Gem was made into a goal he must reach for his guardians to notice him.

Steven successfully solved the conflict at 14 and aside from Spinel and a couple of uppity nobles in Unleash the Prism, no new foes appeared.

But that meant the person Steven became at 14 was his peak and he could never top that. But the world doesn't need Steven Universe the saviour anymore, Steven won and so all the years spent reaching that goal at the cost of his mental health and humanity start to pile up. Made worse by Steven's gem nature. Steven is a diamond, he has as much a need to fill his purpose as any other gem. And his purpose is to lead. Even if Steven consciously denies this, he very much has gotten used to calling the shots and subconsciously still expects it.

Steven is so angry in Future because he is frustrated at lacking a purpose, not having any long-term plans and having trouble fulfilling the plans he has. Everyone else is moving on and has an idea of who they want to be. And Steven who just wanted peace is left standing stagnant. On top of becoming a 16-year-old from an 8-year-old in two years.

Steven Universe Future pointedly tells us that for all the good Steven did as a Crystal Gem, the price was still too high. The years of childhood and the experiences he missed are things he cannot get back. The time he spent trying to impress Pearl, Garnet and Amethyst took from his time socializing with those of his age. The isolation from humanity that living with the gems caused meant he remained 8 for 5 years, while those around him grew.

This isn't even touching the trauma caused by the gem-stuff and having his perfect picture of Rose destroyed.

Though the show doesn't come out and say it, there is a strong hint that this could have been avoided. Had Rose not decided to give Steven her gem, had she lived and raised Steven with Greg, Steven could have had a chance to be a child with no expectations of duty.

That is why this whole story is a tragedy and a stark look into how generational trauma passes on even unintended. Rose couldn't see herself as good, so she gave up her life for Steven. Steven then spent years trying to live up to the image of Rose his guardians gave him, only for it to crash down and burn, leaving him equally as lost and alone as Rose was.

And this is why Steven Universe Future is a good ending to Steven Universe.
