Timeline of the Separation

I don't remember if I typed this before, but here it is again: January/February "winter" - When Lari left. Probably sometime in Jan or Feb. Still cold out, but no snow at the time. March/April/May/June "Lari has been there for more than a season" - It took some time for Lari to settle in, and find a governess job for the villager kid. She's been teaching them for a few months when she is offered the bakery job with Fernando. She works a few days a week at each job. It took Lehan a few months to figure out her location, and shortly after requested to become one of Rupert's knights as a way to atone for his betrayal. That means Rupert spent 2-3 months completely in the dark, before he found out about her diary, and then became MORE miserable. Poor guy. He easily allows Lehan to visit her... because then he could track him and eventually her (implied haha. Lari wonders why Rupert would allow him to take time off easily... was Lehan sucking up to him too? nope... its because he can see her through Lehan ^^) He then spends the next "few months" watching over her from afar, until Lehan catches him in the act in Ch 116. Lehan catches him stalking AGAIN in Ch 117, which is a few weeks later (lol). By this time, it's "Summer". June/July/August "Summer" - My personal headcanon is Rupert's birthday is in August, but it might as well be June or July. The summer months is when Ch 117 takes place. After Rupert feels safe being around her, and not losing control, he visits her almost every other day for a few weeks (which literally could range from 3 weeks to say 8 weeks or something). But it doesn't take long before he does end up hugging her, freaking himself out because there is no way he can keep his hands to himself in self restraint if she's that close to him, so he stops going in person and returns to stalking from afar ^^;. September/October/November "Autumn" - Lari thinks how she Summer and Autumn have passed, and she had no chance to celebrate Rupert's birthday. As the weather chilled, so did her heart :(. November/December/January ish "Winter" - As the weather got chilly, Lari meets Rupert again at the Market square and uncovers his identity. THey part awkwardly, but Rupert finds hope in rekindling their relationship, but continues to watch from afar. She stumbles upon him a few times, and it's pretty obvious she still has feelings for him too, but tries to hide/deny it. This goes on for a few more weeks until Fernando tramples on Lari's good faith and tricks her, causing her to get kidnapped :(. But of course Rupert anticipated that and is able to find her quickly :) "A Year had passed". Still in "Winter", Lari returns to the palace, and comments that she's returned after a year, Louis mentioned it's been a year, Lari commenting that once again she returns to see the flower buds getting ready to prepare to bloom in the spring...

Scene: Tabled Discussions

“So!” Spike clapped his hands together, getting everyone’s attention even if a certain person chose not to turn in his direction, and then kicked back in his chair and put his feet up on the table where Grace had been cleaning weapons all afternoon. “We’ve got hell bitches on the warpath. Any plans for stoppin’ ‘em?”

Grace felt like knocking her head against the table, even if there was a sharpened axe nearby, but she resisted. How had she not known? Yeah, she’d been able to tell that Glory and Val weren’t average demons. Nothing average about those two. Actual gods though? Gods from a hell dimension? Some psychic she was, not being able to tell the difference between a demon and a god. While she was busy silently chastising herself, the conversation continued. Wesley talked about him and Giles reaching out to some contacts, only pausing his rushed words to accept the beer that Faith passed him as she joined them in their office, and Faith was still walking with a slight limp from her last fight against Glory. Faith lowered herself into a chair, kicked at Spike’s legs before settling her feet on the table next to his clunky boots, and then asked Wesley if gods had ever walked the earth before.

“They have, actually, before the time of humans. When this plane was ruled by-”

“Don’t need a history lesson, Percy. We need battle plans, ‘specially if we’re gonna keep Little Bit and-”

“Spike.” The whole room seemed to freeze at the sound of Angel’s voice, but he was still looking steadily into the fire instead of at all of them gathered at the table. “Don’t.”

From the other side of the table, Eliot caught her eyes. She could read his expression clearly, Angel was wound too tight and Spike was bound to push him too far, and she raised her brows in question as Wesley nervously raised his bottle between them. The tension was growing even thicker, as Spike glared at Angel’s back and absently licked at his teeth. Grace shot another pointed look across the table, brows raising even more dramatically this time, and Eliot rolled his eyes. Before anyone could say anything else, before Spike could clearly say the antagonizing thing that he was going to say despite the energy in the room telling him not to, Eliot reached out and knocked Spike’s feet from the table. Spike let out a growled curse that was cut off as Faith swiftly moved to her feet and locked an arm around his neck, and Grace watched with a small amused smile as Faith dragged Spike from the room they had filled with weapons and then dubbed as their office. With Spike and Faith yelling as they knocked through the house towards the back door, Wesley took a look around the room and then excused himself to follow after them. Probably for the best. Spike and Faith could always use some adult supervision.

“You know we’re going to get through this, all of us,” Eliot said once the house was quiet. Grace wasn’t sure if he was talking to her or to Angel, most likely both of them, and she could feel her throat tightening as she met his eyes. Beautiful green, like a grassy field bathed in sunlight.

“No, we’re not all going to make it through this one,” she thought as Eliot looked steadily at her. Psychic visions or no, she knew there was no way they could go against gods and come out the other side unscathed. For now, she took comfort in seeing Angel’s solid form brightened by the fire and Eliot sitting across from her with his steady faith in them. Because at the end of all this? They were going to lose. She wasn’t sure how, who, but she knew it was true. (enjoy this while you can little girl because the world is going to split apart at the center of it all split apart to spill inside spill outside it’s all going to-)

“Hey, El?” Those eyes that she loved so much looked away from where Angel was broodingly staring into the fire, and his lips twitched in a slight smile as he looked at her. “Wanna go watch Faith kick Spike’s ass?”

“The Slayer of Slayers?” Eliot was looking seriously at her now, but his eyes were shining. The world might be ending, again, but they could still have these moments. “I’ll bet dish duty on Spike.”

“Laundry on Faith,” she countered.

“Deal.” Eliot knocked his fist against the table as they both stood up, and she slotted her fingers through his to pull him from the room. She reached out to let her fingertips brush against Angel’s wrist, but she knew he needed time on his own. They could talk later. For now, she needed to go cheer her girl on and watch Spike get his ass kicked. Because the world was ending, and she didn’t want laundry duty as her last earthly chore.

Buffy laughed, deep throaty thing, as she leans back against the wall. Dark curls a halo against her head. She shrugged, “I don’t really care if they know about us,” she said. “Willow and Kennedy started dating back in Sunnydale, it’s not like in house romances don’t happen,” she pointed out. Not that Willow and Kennedy had tried to be discreet. Not that she cared. It wasn’t like they were having sex out in the hallway. Kissing wasn’t that big a deal. It was healthy, and normal, and didn’t have to be kept under lock and key. “Kinda not into relationships I have to hide, anymore. They’re not that healthy,” she said. Hadn’t been that healthy for her anyways. “I’m not ashamed to be seen making out with you.”

(Thoughts) Lari’s decision

Ironically, Lari’s decision to die was subtly foreshadowed, but so discreet that when she choose death, on a surface level it seems random, out of nowhere, but it was actually built up over time. (Like in the real world, there’s always warning signs in hindsight). From the very start, Lari understands the severity of what it means to be accused of treason - death. That’s why she was so upset at her rigged trial in TL1, because while she was sentenced to death because of “excessive opulence and spending unbefitting of a noble” (lie), it was also because she was part of a family that was part of treason (truth). In her very sheltered, ignorant POV, there was no way House Belois would have committed treason - they must have been framed by someone and suffered the consequences. That’s why at the start of the series, she’s so focused on figuring out the relationship between Rupert and her father, because what happened between them, for her family to be accused of treason? Was it Rupert’s baseless rage, or something else? By Chapter 55, Lari has no good leads, and she sees the disconnect: Rupert is a reasonable person who doesn’t strike unless he’s threatened or hurt first. He’s not violent. He’s consistently been like that. So she starts suspecting that her beloved, faultless, father has something to hide. As a loyal daughter, it’s hard for her to even think poorly of her father - but her doubts grow stronger until they meet again. She immediately asks if her father had ever considered treason against the crown - he says no. TECHNICALLY, this is a half truth: Count Belois did not ever consider treason against the Crazy Emperor (because of their promise), HOWEVER, that promise does not apply if Rupert is Emperor. The moment he learns that the “low-blood Rupert” will become Crown Prince, and then Emperor, he starts preparing for treason. He knows Lari will be against it + she shows concern for Rupert, so he keeps her carefully ignorant again.

After learning Rupert’s past, in Ch 59, Lari believed she found the truth of the discord between House Belois and Rupert: Her cowardly father had betrayed Empress Eva, subjecting her and Rupert to a miserable life, living worse than slaves, and that would be a contributing reason why Eva died. She assumed that Rupert’s suffering caused him to hate House Belois, and once he obtained power he enacted rightful judgement on them. But she reasons - Rupert is a reasonable person, so if her father won’t yield and restore the relationship between House Belois and Rupert, then she’ll do it herself. Besides, she’s seen who he is as a person and what his situation is, and she genuinely offers him warmth and compassion because she really wants his happiness. She stops holding her father on a pedestal, because it’s clear he’s hiding something from her, knows more than he would ever admit, and Lehan is also so secretive. But whatever, they promised her over and over there’s no treason. So she’s content.

In Ch 92 Lari says so herself: She wants to trust Rupert, she wants his happiness. This is her choice, and unlike in the past, this time if she were to die, it would be because of her own decisions. She promised to no longer be ingnorant: If she dies, it’s her fault for putting her faith in him. She chose to get close to him, she chose to stay by his side, and chose to support him. In Ch 105, he tells her that he has evidence of treason by the Queen/Arnulf. She knows what that means: Rupert is fully justified in killing them. But she’s aware that if he does so, he’ll develop a reputation as a cruel Emperor, and will not have the support of the people. So she requests he’ll show mercy, to which he’s agreeable to. When Lari learns of House Belois’ plans for treason in 109 - it’s the same. Rupert is fully justified in killing them. What’s worse, is that she’s the one who threatens his position of Emperor the most: she has the true bloodline, she has the support of House Belois’s riches and massive army. Even if he cares for her, she’s too much of a threat, and he can’t afford to spare her because being Emperor is his life goal

But Lari knows as well, that House Belois will not back down. They will use her as a means against Rupert. And when they do attack him, he’ll obviously retaliate, and then House Belois will be annihilated AGAIN. She doesn’t want them to die, she doesn’t want Rupert to kill. She doesn’t want him to be hurt either. So the choice is clear to her: if she disappears, then House Belois will have no reason to attack Rupert, and if she’s gone, then Rupert will spare House Belois out of consideration for her sacrifice. After all, it’s not like she’s anyone important (sarcasm). House Belois only treated her as a useful tool, she has no friends, her family is a lie, and although Rupert cares for her, it’s not like he’ll show mercy to a family of actual traitors. <—— her grave misunderstanding about Rupert. Literally everyone now has betrayed her, and what is she to do, wait for Rupert to betray her too?

That’s just Lari’s character: she has such high capacity for empathy and love she wants her loved ones to be alive and well, but she’s been hurt and betrayed and keeping it all inside, that she doesn’t understand her own worth to those who truly care for her :(. It’s not like she was seeking death: it’s just that in that moment, that was the best solution she could think of to protect everyone :(.

And that’s what Rupert realizes in the novel version of the upcoming Ch 115 (in his POV that is hopefully adapted), is the fact that no matter how hard he worked to show her he trusted and cherished her, Lari fundamentally couldn’t accept him because “he” killed her in TL1. He also realized that he could have done more - this whole time he was afraid of getting too close, opting to watch from afar because he didn’t want to be hated by her. He realized how lonely she actually was, and how much she struggled on her own all these years. If only he knew.... he could have done something about it. Of course she’s gone now, so he can’t do anything, but once he realizes that she still does care for him, and doesn’t hate him, he knows what to do now: He will make it absolutely clear to Lari that she is also a person deserving of love. He won’t hesitate anymore - he’ll make it clear this time, without a shred of doubt, that she is the most important person to him, and he will never, ever, let her be hurt again. He wants to completely earn her trust this time, and will wait as long as needed for her to decide if she still wants to reject him, or to accept him. All he wants is for Lari to properly see him for who he is, and give him a chance. (Upcoming S4 content!!)
