i just saw "how do they prefer to kiss" and blacked out so here are my stream of consciousness thoughts about their fave genres of keeses

adegoke: focused, devoted, all-consuming kisses. no plans, extremely into it and attentive.

atticus: bruising, intense, pressed-together kisses. the kind where your jaw hurts afterwards.

arthur: chaotic, hungry, possessive kisses. all greedy and grabby and trying to show them something but he doesn't really know what.

avery: steady, confident, assertive kisses. sure and certain and stable.

charlie: spontaneous, can’t-resist-it-any-longer, sunshiney kisses. come away grinning like idiots.

ellis: evolving, slow-burn, got-all-day kisses. takes their time over it, wants to experience every single part of it, etch it into their memory.

florrie: silly, giddy, giggly kisses. shy and tentative and exploratory until suddenly they aren't.

griff: tangled up together, hands in hair, totally immobilised kisses. the kind where you just forget that you have anything else on, head empty.

hi nell! as penance for orpheusgate 2k21, what is something that the cast would do when they're in love that they would normally find embarrassing, or that they wouldn't otherwise do? :chinhands: (~narrativefoiltrope)

adegoke: talks in 'we's, proudly tells everyone he knows about even their smallest accomplishment, catches himself absentmindedly thinking about the future (what colour will their walls be? what would they call their hypothetical kids? what should they get for dinner?).

arthur: remembers details, acts on their recommendations without just critiquing them instantly, tries not to pull a face when he disagrees with them (he still pulls the face, but he can laugh when they call him on it, so that’s something).

atticus: tells his mum about them, hangs out with them when he wants to be alone (because they can be alone together, y’know?), will make a concerted effort to express his feelings with words, would let them put a bunch of annoying throw pillows on the bed if they wanted to.

avery: a willingness to be spontaneous, will actually entertain pda, just wades right in to organise their life (a messy downloads folder? not anymore baby!), would choose them over her career.

charlie: that absolutely cringe couple language that you only use when other people aren’t around, talks about places back home that he’s gonna show them, just constantly wants to hear stories about them from anyone they know cause he can never learn enough, doesn't absolutely roast their very wrong sci-fi opinions.

ellis: looks back to see if they’re laughing at a joke too, would actually call them to ask for help if they needed it, messages about things they want to tell them rather than just waiting til they see each other cause they get too excited, just wants to take pictures of them all the time to remember the brilliant little quiet moments.

florrie: shares bad news and not just the good stuff, is open about her goals and ambitions, just lets the little things go, would make a phone call on their behalf if they were really worried about doing it.

griffin: can totally talk shit about the people they hate, blushes furiously when his niblings ask if they’re in love, makes a real effort to learn about the things that they're passionate about (would even secretly read a book if necessary), would go just about anywhere to be with them if that’s really what it was gonna take.

imogen: puts bookmarks on pages she thinks they’d like or that remind her of them, would sing in front of them without dying of embarrassment, will actually argue sometimes rather than just agreeing to everything out of fear of losing them.

nyra: will continue to agonise over their SO’s problems when they aren’t even there, brings them to family events, lets her friends become their friends, holds hands in public (actually just making any public acknowledgement of the fact that they are in a relationship).

rowan: scans the room to find them whenever she arrives at a party, is willing to cancel plans for them, really obnoxious public necking, would totally hold their hair back if they had to vom.

syd: sleeps over, makes plans, will tidy their bathroom so there’s a lil pot for them to put their toothbrush in if they want to (but like whatever they don’t even care if you use it), tries to weasel their way out of big work things that would take them far away for too long.

vinh: just makes absolutely no effort to disguise how utterly enamoured they are, physical intimacy, they get a little bolder pushing for big artistic opportunities (because nothing makes you bold like being in love).

On the same wavelength as the 'how do the characters kiss' ask, how do the characters hug?

adegoke: an excellent hugger, gives the sort of hug where you can just totally forget about everything else that’s going on, like time is just standing still. best for, like, a long intimate hug. he’s just pretty good at feeling the Vibes so he always gives a hug appropriate for the situation.

arthur: absolutely not a hugger, he kind of needs to be hugged into submission first. there’ll be a solid few seconds where he’s just standing there like person_standing before he eases into it. bit of a london bridge hugger (where his arms go in, but he keeps the rest of his body as distant as possible lmao). he’d probably get used to it over time.

atticus: very much depends on how well he knows the person and how much he likes them. generally just gives like a brief, polite, single-armed hug, but his favourite people get a full big bear hug – the kind that lifts your feet off the floor.

avery: quite a performative hugger, i guess. she’s used to hugging people because they need to be hug, not because she wants to hug them, if that makes sense? she says and does all the right things but you can kind of feel that her heart isn’t really in it (until, of course, it is, and then they can expect to be hugged at every opportunity, arms draped around their neck, kiss on their cheek).

charlie: firm and decisive, like every time he hugs someone it’ll be the only time he ever gets to, always still kind of holding on when the other person goes to pull back.

ellis: soft and loose, hand on the nape of their neck or in their hair, soothing and gentle.

florrie: just absolutely no acknowledgement of any personal space, if she’s hugging you then she is Hugging You, very prone to like a straddle or a spinny jumpy situation or just generally tackling someone onto any available surface.

griffin: squeezey tight, overenthusiastic, arms-around-waist hugger. griff would basically be in constant contact with the person he loves if he had his way, so he’s a real sitting-in-lap, arm-around-shoulder kinda guy.

imogen: buries her face in their chest/neck/hair, prone to gripping their clothes real tightly, very quiet.

nyra: generally a total ragdoll hugger, doesn’t really reciprocate any hugging, not her thing. you’d have to really work to earn a nyra hug – if she really liked someone and felt like they really needed it she can be quite supportive.

rowan: really leans into it, a full body hugger. generally instigates a hug like mid-conversation and keeps talking the whole way through – like as she’s saying hi/bye or whatever.

syd: brief but firm – kind of like a good handshake or the hugging equivalent of a fist bump. generally goes for arms around shoulders? like over waist but not fully around neck, that’d be a bit intimate.

vinh: one hand on the neck, the other around their waist, generally turns their face away and rests their head on the huggee’s shoulder. hugs with Feeling.

What is the stupidest thing characters has spent money on?

Adegoke: a cab from london to bristol at 2am to make an ill-advised declaration of love. it was well received, but the grandeur of the gesture was entirely unnecessary and it’s just generally a very embarrassing story now.

Arthur: a very expensive bottle of wine that turned out to be corked.

Atticus: a tattoo kinda like this one (warning for... sexually explicit content, i guess?). he’ll acknowledge that it’s stupid, but he also stands by the decision.

Avery: various houseplants that she absolutely failed to take care of and are now decidedly crispy.

Charlie: people would argue that a lot of charlie’s purchases are very stupid, and he’d disagree. the thing that sticks out in his memory is the christmas present he got for his mum after she died when he forgot, for about an hour, that she wasn’t going to be around to get it. that or the cotton candy machine.

Ellis: tickets to events that they end up not being able to go to, or can’t find anyone to go with. ellis loves making plans and bitterly hates cancelling them.

Florrie: once spent like £50 at a carnival playing the same dart-balloon-popping game over and over again because she COULD do it and it WASN’T impossible. left with the oversized bunny stuffed toy prize in the end after giving the guy running the stall the sassing of a lifetime, so it wasn’t a total loss.

Griffin: one of those really huge novelty gummy bears. it was expensive and it just gave him and his niblings a tummy ache.

Imogen: membership to ancestry.com. she wanted to put together a family tree to see if she had any distant cousins or any family that she could maybe be close to, but she didn’t really have enough information to find anyone and it turned out to just be pretty depressing.

Nyra: got drunk, ordered a sword online, was very confused when it arrived.

Rowan: paid for an ex to go on holiday. they broke up half way through the trip and the rest of the time was hideously awkward, wouldn’t recommend, terrible use of money when she’d have had a way better time alone. or the fun little halloween costume she got for her cat that he absolutely will not wear.

Syd: a round of drinks for a whole bar – they’d just always wanted to do that thing in a bar where you get up and yell that this round’s on you, so it’s one of the things they did with their first big hollywood paycheck. wasn’t as cool as they’d expected, actually.

Vinh: every now and then when they go shopping and stock their fridge with food and then just… don’t actually cook it and have to throw it out when it goes bad.

what do the ROs smell like and does atticus have m u s k

adegoke: clean shirt and sunshine. i just picture adegoke as being one of those people who just always smells good???

arthur: devastatingly expensive cologne, of course. goes for fresh, crisp sort of scents.

atticus: generally like. cigarette smoke lmao. kind of musky but not in a bad way – just like, a woody, earthy sort of vibe if that makes Any Cents. 

avery: clean, neutral scents – bright and airy. a vague warm vanilla-y sort of vibe.

charlie: kinda just smells like a boy hahaha. deodorant and coffee and a citrusy, gingery body wash.

ellis: chanel n°5 – a timeless classic, and something that they wear consistently all the time so it's easily associated w them

florrie: kind of sweet and fruity? she wears a lot of cherry lipgloss and she likes fun, flirty perfumes (kind of like daisy by marc jacobs??) and she smells of that like synthetic glittery smell a lot.

griffin: soap and mint and the ocean.  griff’s nickname in school was minty cause he always had fresh breath lmao

imogen: mostly just like coconut – she has quite a strong-smelling shampoo haha. otherwise just kind of soft, uses those lil pulse point aromatherapy rollers on her wrists sometimes so can have a vague sort of camomile-y smell.

nyra: like atticus, mostly just smells like cigarette smoke lmao. goes for warm, familiar scents – like autumn. leather, cinnamon, dark chocolate.

rowan: uses chance by chanel – soft and floral and fruity, a kind of happy fun smell. addictive.

syd: smells like a teenage boy LMAO just has the most incredibly lame deodorant because it’s not about what it smells like (nose) as what it smells like (vibe) if ya feel me. someone please give them more sophisticated scents i beg of thee.

vinh: doesn’t have the ££ to smell fancy, but would Love that because they love like wandering round boots and sampling all the different perfumes lmao. most of the time they just smell like paint, but failing that just sort of neutral?? the sort of smell that you'd have to know them really well to even notice if ya feel me

what are the RO body types like

haha okay been waitin for this to slide on in today

now, i'll start by saying that a lot of the ROs don't really have explicit descriptions of their physique ~in text~ because idk my physical descriptions are pretty sparse and i just didn't think it was the most interesting thing about them/the most important thing to convey in the brief time we've seen them all for so far. 

that generally leads to people assuming that they're skinny for f!ROs and like dorito shaped for m!ROs and tbh i think the assumption that a character must be skinny unless explicitly stated otherwise says a lot about how we collectively consume media and what we think about people with body types that don’t meet the societal “ideal”. idk man there’s just something to be said about skinny being the default i’m just not articulate enough to do the saying. 

(also soz editing to add this but, like everything in a WIP that’s only 3 chapters in, details about the characters will probably become clearer over time so if you’re waiting to see stuff referenced in text then it probably will be! just not as a big infodump the first time you meet them haha)

anyway, soz, i'll actually answer your question:

adegoke: pretty beefy, but well toned. adegoke's pretty into exercise so probably has the most Intentional physique. has the most cake after florrie, could definitely bounce a coin off his ass.

arthur: a very lanky build. he’s stronger than you’d probs expect but yeah he’s v slim has to get all his clothes tailored etc and is just very like. straight up straight down. 

atticus: very broad - kind of a big rugby player kinda build but one of the big guys at the back not the little ones that do all the running about?? strong and muscular, but not super toned. v barrel-chested. 

avery: tall and lean, very willowy. always wears heels because she does not give a fuck about being taller than the lads and if they are bothered then they can shove it. 

charlie: absolutely just Some Guy hahaha. he absolutely does not exercise or anything so he has no muscle tone to speak of lmao - very 2007 indie band guy aesthetic if that means anything to anyone?? 

ellis: slim and slender, naturally very slim. kind of emphasised by the way they hold themself - v statuesque and careful, partly due to the fact that they’re often in pain and don’t want it to be obvious. 

florrie: chubby cutie! florrie's like 5'1" so she's weeny but curvy, ~voluptuous~ i guess? i always picture her as like a fat girl with a kind of natural hourglass silhouette. definitely has most cake.

griff: i guess best described as an athletic build? he’s not huge and broad but he just has that kind of toned physique from constantly Being Active. definitely the closest to being dorito shaped, has rippling abs etc hahaha 

imogen: very slight, almost scrawny? imogen’s quite tall so she probably comes closest to like a 00s model aesthetic. 

nyra: nyra is petite in the sense that she is short and slim, but has quite a muscular build? she’s really into judo (as you will know if you get thrown in ch1 lmaooo) and has quite square shoulders, toned limbs etc. 

rowan: naturally slim, had her boobs done in her early 20s so she’s quite ~curvy~, a textbook 2020 instabaddie tbh. 

syd: i generally describe them as being like. lithe and wiry? they’re definitely strong and athletic but build more for mobility than like brute strength. trained as a gymnast so that has influenced their physique a lot. 

vinh: spends most of their time building installations etc so they’re actually pretty toned - kind of rectangular? and generally quite an angular person - a lot of sharp joints and lines.

In light of recent events, I just wanted to make a post to make a few things crystal clear about myself, my characters, and my relationship to this community.

The first is that, as a white author, I want to make a public commitment to not only listen to readers of colour, but to decisively take action in addressing any issues that are raised.

I know that I have spoken before on this blog about my issues with ~hate mail~ etc, but I just want to make it absolutely clear that I do not consider valid criticism of my work to fall into this category, and I will always welcome and appreciate readers coming forward with any concerns about the way that I portray my characters or conduct myself on this blog. While I hope that I won’t get things wrong too often, please feel free to call me on it if/when I do, and I’ll do what I can to fix it!

I also want to say that I absolutely don’t vibe with discrimination or hate speech of any kind, and I won’t stand for it on my blog, in my mentions or in Discord. This should be something that goes without saying, but to avoid any ambiguity, I think it’s best that I spell it out!

It also seems timely to provide some more information about the Body Count cast. My lovely pal @whoreromancer​ has put together some skin tone references for me and I hope that they will be useful going forward to anyone who is interested in drawing or making edits for the cast!

I am so appreciative and frankly still totally blown away that anyone would ever want to draw the little people that exist in my brain and I realise that I probably should have shared something like this sooner, but I didn’t really anticipate the need for it! If anyone who has drawn fanart of the characters and their skin tones are lighter than the ones referenced, then I would be beyond grateful if you get the time to update ❤

This also seems like a good time to restate the characters’ ethnicities, which I know I’ve answered before, but perhaps a little more vaguely than I should have. It’s worth noting that all characters except Charlie were born in the UK and would identify as British, but have a range of ethnic backgrounds.

Arthur, Atticus, Avery, Florrie, Griff, Imogen & Syd are all white. Florrie is Polish and Atticus is Irish-Spanish.

Ellis is mixed race; their mother was mixed Colombian, and their father was Welsh.

Rowan is mixed race; her father was Mongolian, and her mother is Scottish.

Adegoke is Yoruba.

Vinh is Vietnamese.

Nyra is Gujarati Indian.

Charlie is mixed race; his father is Māori, and his mother was mixed race (white British and Zulu South African).
