Given his snarky reply earlier, Nasir would admit he deserved the sarcasm, but there was still a sting that he felt in the depths of his chest. The bitter words from Agron’s mouth pained him, not because of what was said, but rather the way he said it. With contempt. The kind of tone Agron took with Crixus, not him.

Nasir thought about his words for a moment as he tossed the wet cloth into a basin before turning to face Agron properly. Nasir’s face was a complex mixture of emotions. Sorrow, desperation, anger, fear, surrender. His dark eyes searched Agron’s in a hopeless attempt to quell the temper that resided there. How could he attempt to mend this rift if Agron would not believe the words from his mouth?

“Is anger still directed toward me?” He asked plainly and without rhetoric or accusations. “What would you propose I do in order to restore trust?… or perhaps there is none left?” He felt defeated somehow. This was not his fault, yet maybe it was. Maybe complete freedom was too much to ask in this world. Surely every man was a slave to something or someone even while being labeled as ‘free’. Unlike Chadara, Nasir had not wanted to stand at Agron’s side simply because he meant safety and protection, but because Agron had loved him for who he was instead of who he was told to be. Despite his shortcomings, Agron was gentle and honest, fierce and loyal, fair and concerned for the people he looked after. All of these qualities Nasir had rarely encountered before.

He had paused for sometime, sitting in silence, eyes downcast to the tiles under his feet. Finally, he quietly concluded, “I swear to you, Agron, I have not broken trust with you…”

Agron remained silent, not answering Nasir’s first question -- though uncertain as to whether his partner expected a response to it. Nor did he answer the next regarding there not being any trust left. And the final words. Swearing to him that he had not broken trust. Agron slightly clenched his jaw, his eyes not resting on Nasir but was completely focused on what the other had said. “To love, is to fear the loss of it,” he began, knowing it was seemingly unrelated, but . . . he owed Nasir an explanation he supposed. “A fucking fear that tears at heart every moment we are upon field of battle.” Every time there was a fight, or battle . . . Agron would fear losing Nasir. Not due to any lacking skill on his lover’s part.

But, just because he had failed in protecting Duro and the cost had been watching his brother die in his arms. He would not survive Nasir’s death. Or loss. “Thought of losing you to another has never come to mind.” Until now. The unspoken, but understood words. Agron figured he didn’t need to say them. He saw the way Nasir looked at Castus. Had Agron truly believed it was solely one sided . . . perhaps he would not have reacted so strongly. But the fear made him irrational. Somewhere, in the back of his mind perhaps he knew that. Though still made no apology for it.
