Chain catshark!
Tumblr media
Also known as a chain dogfish or simply chain link shark! They're most recognisable for their chainlike patterns, which function as camouflage against the bottom of the sea where they typically rest during the day. Curiously, adults prefer rough rubble bottoms while juveniles seem to prefer smoother rubble!

Because I'm going to school for bio anyway I've decided I'm going to make a series where I just post about random animals I find cool and a couple facts about them. I don't know how frequent this will be, but first creature on the list is-
Chain Catshark
Tumblr media
Also known as the chain dogfish, chain catsharks are a nocturnal catshark that get up to 59 cm in length. They're found most commonly in the Northwest Atlantic and Western Central Atlantic. They're generally shy, and harmless to humans, their diet consisting of squid, bony fish, crustaceans, and bristle worms.
But the most interesting thing about them is that they're biofluorescent, and one of only four elasmobranch species with this ability!
Tumblr media
Look at her! Isn't she gorgeous? I don't have much more to add rn but feel free to admire her beauty until next time I have an animal post

hello do you wanna talk about sharks
here are
10 cool shark facts!
most sharks are colorblind!
contrary to popular belief, sharks arent smooth! their skin feels a bit like sandpaper
this one's a bit dark: if a shark embryo grows teeth while in the womb, it will partake in intrauterine cannibalism, which basically means it will eat its siblings in the womb
a shark can have up to 30k teeth!
whale sharks can live to be 100 years old!
a shark pregnancy can last anywhere from 5 months to 3.5 years
sharks have existed for over 400 million years!
the odds of you getting killed by a shark are 1 in 3.7 million
some female sharks can reproduce independently, leaving the males vulnerable as there's no use for them! #girlpower!
there are 440 different species of sharks!
ahh shark facts!! okay im gonna add onto some of yours and also say some more :)
5. it is so awesome how long they live, sometimes even to 150 years. but, scientists believe, that only around 10% of whale sharks make it to adulthood :( so despite being able to grow to 63 feet at most or 30-50 feet on average, the average whale shark makes it to only 13 feet long because they die so young.
(if my numbers are a little off im sorry, this is by memory)
10. i think that you might only be counting elasmobronchii sharks, because(fun fact) there are either 512 or 535 species of sharks, it depends on who you ask. there are 23 species of sharks that arent officially considered sharks (yet?) and some scientists still count them :)
okay here are my own !!
1. there are more than 150 species of catsharks! my favorite is probably the chain catshark because of their bioluminescence and beautiful pattern. ghost catsharks and demon catsharks are also cool(i just like their name)
2. whale sharks give live birth to around 300 pups at a time, and they go to a location so remote and far away from predators that scientists have no clue where they go to give birth
3. catsharks curl up into a little ball when theyre threatened to protect their underbellies
4. sharks have very sensitive electroreceptors called ampullae of lorenzini, which are formed as a network of mucas filled pores in the skin of sharks and other cartilages fish! they are able to detect the electrical signals that their prey create
5. pacific spiny dogfish can live for more than 80 years, while atlantic dogfish only live around 35-40 years
6. whale sharks and nurse sharks are both orectolobiformes :) they have 5 gills, 2 spineless dorsal fins, an anal fin and spiracles(paired openings that let in water and filter their gills. theyre by the sharks eyes)
(i described orectolobiforms by memory so if i forgot something, im sorry!!)
7. whale sharks can travel thousands of miles to different feeding grounds, but they only move at around 3 mph. theyre a migratory shark but they move so slow??
yay sharks!!

Question regarding Neverafter: how much do you think Brennan is trying to do horror? The players and the format are working against him, but what do you think of the world he’s created? I honestly can’t tell how much he wants them to commit or not.
yeah i guess at this point it sort of feels like he's let the horror go lol. it seems like he's been pulling his punches a lot; the biggest example is letting pinnochio be his own warlock patron but also giving tim the power to put people in the book without confronting him with the ethics of it and even going so far as to be like. sure, they're happy in there :) there's also just a constant undercurrent of like. letting players give help actions and have advantage, or not imposing disadvantage even when the roleplay calls for it. this is EASILY incorporated into the horror -- the realization that the story prioritizes your life over that of minor characters and so contact with you is often fatal for them is terrifying -- but it's reflexive rather than intentional and so it's left unremarked upon and works against the tone of the season rather than for it. most recently when they got to the tundra and had levels of exhaustion and then he just FAST FORWARDED THROUGH IT... ill tell you right now if that was a naddpod episode someone would have died of exposure and rightfully so.
a lot of the horror seems to happen offscreen (elody: i found your body in the other world) or in character backstories that the players often don't take the time to explore; overall it seems like the horror at this point is largely confined to combat which is like. just how any normal season of d20 works. like there are always scary villains.... its not enough to have an extra scary boss if theyre just going to beat it in 3 or 4 rounds... AND he keeps putting in these like. cheat codes into the fights so that they dont even have to BEAT the bosses they just have to like. break the wolf's chains or outlast the dogfish or whatever. THE PARTY HAS ONLY DIED ONCE and even then they all died together so there was no like. player that had to face death alone OR player that was the only one left alive and had to go on living alone... there is no reason that we haven't had another death by now! acoc showed that if he wants to kill a party member he absolutely can.
i also agree with others who have said that there's just too many moving parts for things to really feel tight and well-executed. the stepmother and the fairies who were omnipresent threats at the season's start are now apparently unable to reach the party for basically no reason at all which removes a lot of the fear. you're not supposed to say the authors' names or there will be grievous consequences but nothing has happened even though they've slipped up multiple times. they destroyed a wing of the lines between and there was no effect on their dimension. they also left npcs in there e.g. little miss muffett and it was apparently just fine. we haven't heard from scheherezade or aesop or any other dimensions in weeks. i appreciate that brennan wanted to give the party options and build a fleshed-out world AND that with improv some level of discontinuity comes with the territory but it really just lowers the stakes when villains or horrors only exist if they're on the party's mind and fade to the background as soon as the party becomes interested in something else. what's horrifying about a world where you have to actively seek out the horror?
he was saying in the last adventuring party like 'oh i created all these factions and had no idea what you all would gravitate towards in the season.' so it seems like most of the 'horror' was in the design of the world and the backstories of the characters etc and then he just let players loose within that framework to do whatever they want rather than intentionally injecting horror into the rhythms of play, game mechanics, plot structure, etc. we have all said over and over again that this is largely what comes of insisting on using d&d no matter the genre or season concept, despite the fact that there are tons of indie ttrpgs out there specifically designed to facilitate horror.
i'll be really interested to see how the season wraps up because there is absolutely still room for a horrifying ending but it's feeling less and less likely and more and more like the party is going to be allowed to just fully win and fix everything. we shall see!

listen you have a good reason to be paranoid and all but I promise you only have to worry about half as much this time because yeah...it's...half of her something happened she tried freeing another poppy from a circus and got attached with knives and chains and then I guess you and someone else summoned her and you ended up with the teal one
“So… what, she was split in half?”
*Dogfish glances up at the ‘sky’ for a moment, before looking back at the teal chicken with a huff. Slowly, he releases the Poppy variant, but he's still very suspicious.*

INFO DUMPING ABOUT MERFOLK!REDACTED
Its 5 am and im avoiding Solaire clan mafia duties help
These are a bit repetitive and all over the place have mercy. lol
● Lasko has those glasses chains that only grandmas have. Its made outta seaglass and pearls cause he's gotta look classy.
○ Bonus if his listener gave it to him and hand beaded it.
● Freelancer is diagnosed with thalassophobia. (The fear of the ocean specifically).
● Humanborns are inherently shifters.
● Other shifters can either have humanborn parents or it just runs in the family.
● Sirens are the d(a)emon stand ins
● There is a ocean Aria! It's deeper than any normal merfolk can go but sirens have a higher pressure tolerance (like blobfish) so thats why they can live down there.
○ They use magic and wards to mask it, as well as most sirens just using a rift to get to the surface.
○ Imagine humans finally having the ability to explore the Mariana trench and are met with magic that makes em forget it.
● Empathy sirens don't come up to the surface a lot but when they do they usually cloak themselves.
● Different sirens sing different songs that inflict different emotions on humans.
○ They do shift into a human form (Gavin doesn't cause his whole "I'm not shifting for others" thing ofc)
● Idk much abt Aria (I tuned out during Gav's ramblings) but the Chorus for this world's Aria is made up of siren royalty.
● Hux is not a shifter, Damien, Lasko, and FL are shifters, Gavin and Caelum are Sirens.
○ Hux is a whale shark merfolk. Damien is some kinda wierd serpenty water snek shifter. Lasko is a goofy lil' Jellyfish shifter.
○ Lasko shocks people when he gets nervous (on accident ofc)
● All of the Shaw pack are dogfish shark shifters.
○ The unempowered mates aren't buuut SH is an octopus shifter bc camoflage!!!
● Freelancers in this world can turn into any kind of merfolk they want. It would take a big tole on them, though.
○ Freelancers cannot shift into any merfolk with extra special powers. So no sirens, squids, or whales.
●Whale merfolk can get bigger and smaller depending on what they need.
● Unless previously empowered, vampires are now squid shifters.
○ They are the only ones that have the power to turn anyone into a squid shifter. (It does bring em back once they die.)
● Lovely is an eel shifter ofc (once they get turned they can shift into a vampire squid too)
● Sam can shift into anything ofc, but once he gets turned theres a new one added to that pile. It takes even more of a tole on him to shift too much in one day now though.
● Clans and packs are wierd now
○ Theres also schools... So schools of merfolk are just normal ranking citizen groups. Typically they don't have humaborns, but are fine with normal shifters.
○ Packs are above that, and are made up of any species of shark. Sharks can go off on their own, but are expected to join/make a pack at one point in their life.
○ Clans are the highest ranking, and consist of any kinds of merfolk as long as they are squid shifters. It is fairly uncommon for squid shifters to not be apart of a clan. Infact, its required by the department for every squid shifter to be associated with a clan.
● The inversion was easy to cover up since it happened underwater.
● Siren's songs have varying effects depending on what you are.
○ Full effect on humans
○ Half effect on shifters
○ Zero effect on merfolk
● The Gavin and Vega fight was done underwater while FL brought Caelum to safety on land.
○ Vega is 100% more used to being on land than Gavin so it wasn't really safety but uh- whatever-
● FL prefers to be with their friends because they still live with their parents. Thing is, they hate swimming in the ocean.
○ To try and fix that, Hux started helping them learn to swim in the little cave that they met Gav in.
○ Took almost half a year for FL to finally gain the confidence to go out into the ocean. They loved and hated it at the same time. But they still wouldn't go any deeper than the reef.
● Lasko and FL taught Damien how to shift and showed him around the land.
● Gavin finally got to spend some actual time with FL when they started going down further to ocean dahlia.
○ Lets just say things got spicy...
● The new wierd abandoned carnival place is a beach that is closed of for safety.
● Sam lives underwater bit away from underwater dahlia.
● Tank moved into underwater dahlia when they came back from Washington.
● Asher and David live on land.
● Milo lives on land but moves into underwater dahlia when he meets SH.
● Vincent lives underwater but moves on land when he meets lovely.
○ After lovely is turned they move underwater.
Thats it! Started this hc list daaaays ago so ig here lol. Alot of it was repeating from a previous post. Shawpack and Solaire clan stories would be pretty much the same but I had to write a bit more abt the damn fam to get my thoughts straight. If you guys have any hcs for any of the other series (if they weren't mentioned here I haven't listened to them) pls tell me! Anyways have a great day! Bye ^^.

Sharks are a group of elasmobranch fish characterized by a cartilaginous skeleton, five to seven gill slits on the sides of the head, and pectoral fins that are not fused to the head. Modern sharks are classified within the clade Selachimorpha (or Selachii) and are the sister group to the Batoidea (rays and kin). Some sources extend the term "shark" as an informal category including extinct members of Chondrichthyes (cartilaginous fish) with a shark-like morphology, such as hybodonts. Shark-like chondrichthyans such as Cladoselache and Doliodus first appeared in the Devonian Period (419–359 million years), though some fossilized chondrichthyan-like scales are as old as the Late Ordovician (458–444 million years ago). The oldest modern sharks (selachimorphs) are known from the Early Jurassic, about 200 million years ago.[citation needed]
Sharks range in size from the small dwarf lanternshark (Etmopterus perryi), a deep sea species that is only 17 centimetres (6.7 in) in length, to the whale shark (Rhincodon typus), the largest fish in the world, which reaches approximately 12 metres (40 ft) in length. They are found in all seas and are common to depths up to 2,000 metres (6,600 ft). They generally do not live in freshwater, although there are a few known exceptions, such as the bull shark and the river shark, which can be found in both seawater and freshwater. Sharks have a covering of dermal denticles that protects their skin from damage and parasites in addition to improving their fluid dynamics. They have numerous sets of replaceable teeth.
Several species are apex predators, which are organisms that are at the top of their food chain. Select examples include the tiger shark, blue shark, great white shark, mako shark, thresher shark, and hammerhead shark.
Sharks are caught by humans for shark meat or shark fin soup. Many shark populations are threatened by human activities. Since 1970, shark populations have been reduced by 71%, mostly from overfishing. Sharks are spread across 512 described and 23 undescribed species in eight orders. The families and genera within the orders are listed in alphabetical order.
I LOVE YOU THANK YOU /P

ANDREA: I know! I’m doing my best over here!

IT IS NOT MY PLACE TO TELL YOU WHAT TO DO. BUT YOU SHOULD BE AWARE YOU PUT YOUR LIFE AND YOUR CREW IN GREAT DANGER WITH YOUR ACTIONS
ANDREA: We made it, didn’t we?
YOU HAD NO WAY OF KNOWING YOU WOULD. YOU JEOPARDIZE MULTIPLE PEOPLE’S SAFETY TO PROTECT YOUR PROPERTY
ANDREA: Property? What are you talking about?
I AM NOT ALIVE, I AM NOT A PERSON. I WAS MADE WITH A PURPOSE AND WHEN SERVING THAT PURPOSE INVOLVES MY DESTRUCTION, THAT IS THE LOGICAL COURSE OF ACTION
ANDREA: That’s not… You’re not like that.
WHY WOULD I NOT BE
ANDREA: Because you’re talking to me! We’re having a conversation! You’re a crew member!
YOU ANTHROPOMORPHISE ME TO A DANGEROUS EXTENT
ANDREA: Computer, just… leave me alone, please.

MR. WILSON: You ready, computer?
YES, MR. WILSON. MAY I ASK A QUESTION FIRST?
MR. WILSON: Sure, kiddo. Hit me.
DID YOU TRULY BELIEVE MY RADIO EMITTERS’ CONFIGURATIONS WERE A SECURITY RISK?
IN WHAT WAY WOULD IT THREATEN THE CREW?
MR. WILSON: Almost killed you, didn’t it?
WELL
I BELIEVE I MUST REVISE MY DEFINITION OF CREW IF I AM TO BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE REST OF THIS SHIP’S PERSONNEL
MR. WILSON: Yeah, you’d better do that. Can’t help it, ya know? Humans just do that sometimes when they spend time and depend of something. I think it’s called “pack bonding.”
VERY WELL, I WILL ADJUST MY PRIORITIES TO TRY TO TAKE THIS INTO ACCOUNT, THOUGH YOUR SAFETY IS STILL THE TOP OF MY LIST
MR. WILSON: That’s fine. We all take care of each other. Just do your best to live.
I WILL DO MY BEST TO FOLLOW THIS INSTRUCTION. NOW, ONTO THE READING
MR. WILSON: thank ya kindly.

IT HAS ALSO BEEN OBSERVED TO CATCH SPINY DOGFISH (SQUALUS ACANTHIAS) UP TO 1.2 M (4 FT) IN LENGTH WHILE IN CAPTIVITY. ADDITIONALLY, CONSUMED CARCASSES OF THIS SAME SHARK SPECIES HAVE BEEN FOUND IN GIANT PACIFIC OCTOPUS MIDDENS IN THE WILD, PROVIDING STRONG EVIDENCE OF THESE OCTOPUSES PREYING ON SMALL SHARKS IN THEIR NATURAL HABITAT.

ANDREA
ANDREA: Yes, computer?
I SHOULD TELL YOU I HAVE RECENTLY CHANGED MY DEFINITION OF CREW TO INCLUDE MYSELF, IS THIS OK?
ANDREA: Oh, that’s great!
I STILL DO NOT FULLY COMPREHEND WHY YOU CONSIDER ME A PERSON.
ANDREA: Well, I told you. It’s because we’re talking, this doesn’t feel like operating a machine, it’s talking to a person.
IS CONVERSATION ABILITY TRULY THE MAIN MEASURE OF PERSONHOOD?
ANDREA: No. Well… There’s this story people used to tell, from before there were AIs like you, but after humans started dreaming of them. Something like “A man was walking down the road, when the Tin Man came up to him. He said: “Can you tell me how to find humanity?”. The man told him “I don’t know, let’s look together and maybe we’ll find it.””
ANDREA: The thing is, humanity isn’t something anyone can prove conclusively. But sharing company with others and asking yourself about it is the only way we have.
I SEE
I THINK
I CANNOT FULLY FOLLOW THE TRAIN OF THOUGHT, BUT I CAN SEE IT GOES SOMEWHERE. THANK YOU FOR THIS INSIGHT
ANDREA: No worries, Computer.

7 14 22 for the ask?
ty for the ask!!
7. what animal do you look forward to seeing when you visit an aquarium?
SHARKS!!! at my local aquarium there’s a big tank that has a bunch of sharks in it that swim around with like some manta rays and there’s also a couple tanks with bigger sharks like tiger sharks and nurse sharks :) at the aquarium in my cousins’ hometown there’s a touch tank where you can pet chain link dogfish sharks and that’s like my favorite thing EVER
14. do you think you’re dehydrated?
uhhhh sometimes! when i’m on the go i often either forget or just forgo bringing a waterbottle with me because it gets cumbersome but when i’m working on one place for a while (like last summer when i worked in an office, or when im working on a big project like i do for finals) i’m ALWAYS drinking water out of one of my many waterbottles so i’m definitely hydrated then 😊
22. do you have an emotional support water bottle?
yes! a few! my favorite waterbottles are my starbucks reusable holiday venti cup that is the one i tend to carry around these days (it’s awesome and matches my hair and has poinsettias and a fox and birds on it!), my trusty 64 oz waterbottle that’s black and COATED in stickers (it’s a little too cumbersome to carry with me places so i’ve mostly stopped carrying that one around as much) and my yellow 32 oz waterbottle that i use for dance class! that one is special because i love the color and it has stickers from my friend nico on it :3
thanks again for the ask!!!
send me asks from this post!

There are also several seafood options on the menu including lobster tail or jumbo shrimp cocktail with Fleming's signature sauce (the recipe for which was developed using a secret ingredient).
