idk which wlw needs to hear this but male fantasy romances where the player character CAN be a woman is not representation. representation means its writers took the time and love and care to actually explore love between two women not love between a woman and a carefully kept gender neutral entity that COINCIDENTALLY has a lot of heterosexual tropes. like love urself queen

Travels with Myself and Another: five journeys from Hell by Martha Gellhorn
The door [of their accommodation for the night] opened onto the street and the smell thereof. The mosquitoes were competing with the flies and losing… I lay on the boards, a foot off the floor, and said in the darkness, ‘I wish to die.’
- Martha Gellhorn, Travels with Myself and Another: five journeys from Hell
This fantastic quote perfectly embodies Martha Gellhorn’s feelings when Hemingway to whom she just married had brought her to the front lines of the Sino-Japanese War for her honeymoon.
Travels with Myself and Another describes her globe-spanning adventures, both accompanied and alone. At heart it’s a collection of "the best of the worst journeys," originally published in 1978 and spanning a swath of history from the WWII Greatest Generation to the 1970's counterculture revolution. In the complexity of her observations ‘she prefigures the works of people like Bruce Chatwin and Paul Theroux and Jonathan Raban and the renaissance of first-person adventure writing. For Martha Gellhorn had a full life that very few of us can only ever dream of let alone emulate.
“Martha Gellhorn was so fearless in a male way, and yet utterly capable of making men melt,” writes New Yorker literary editor Bill Buford in the foreword of the book.
As a hard bitten war correspondent, Gellhorn covered every military conflict from the Spanish Civil War to Vietnam and Nicaragua. Gellhorn witnessed the invasion of Normandy as a stowaway after getting kicked off the press boat and wrote over a dozen fiction and non-fiction books in her 60-year career. A feminist at her core, Martha, M as UC (unwilling companion, AKA Hemingway) calls her, sets off on each “horror journey” as she’s dubbed them, without a great deal of pre-planning, other than the bare minimum required by her destination. The era of traveling by your bootstraps, hopping flights when you need them, hoping to stumble upon a hotel with available rooms each night, etc. is simply unheard of today.
Indeed Gellhorn was enraptured. She went to toe to toe with Ernest Hemingway with her courage as they dodged shell fire together. Gellhorn and Hemingway had been married a few months before and this trip to the front lines of the Sino-Japanese War was in effect their honeymoon  Their compared experiences of the trip create much of the humour, as he is happy to drink, smoke, and chat with locals, while she is trying to get material for her article and remember important details, as well as deal with guides and officials that barely speak English. With razor-sharp humour and exceptional insight into place and character, she tells of a tense week spent among dissidents in Moscow; long days whiled away in a disused water tank with hippies clustered at Eilat on the Red Sea; and her journeys by sampan and horse to the interior of China during the Sino-Japanese War.
"We are supposed to learn by experience;" Gellhorn reflects on her repeated travels in her introduction, "fat lot of good that does if you only remember the experience too late." We start out in WWII China with Ernest Hemingway as her unwilling "another," and end with her babysitting her helpless driver in East Africa. Her laugh-out-loud descriptions of lunches with everyone from Chiang Kai-shek and Madame Chiang in war-torn China to Mrs. Mandelstam in the oppressive Soviet communist regime provide an entertaining romp through history with someone who has been there. Her casual mentions of the countries in Africa and realistic dialect of the natives of the Caribbean made me pick up an atlas. Her character as a true free spirit who hires her own boats against the advice of locals shines through in her tight and un-politically correct prose. "I remember West Africa the way one remembers pain, as an incident but never the precise sensations."
While I’m sure there are readers who would find it difficult to turn off their 2018 PC filters and would find her recounting of her 1962 trip to West Africa offensive, at it’s core it is a compelling historical and sociological exploration into the changing nature of how we travel and interact with people, and is definitely worth reading. People can skip it if they feel offended but the rest of the book is a treasure of insight, history, and world travel.
When M and UC (Hemingway) go to China during World War II, it never feels like there is a great threat on their lives. When M goes to the French islands of the Caribbean, I learned a great deal about how the Vichy government affected their lives, but I was never fearful of M’s survival. These adventures, and M’s quite frequent poor decision making – when the pilot of the boat tells you he won’t wait for you to scale a dormant volcano because he can’t dock safely, you should probably heed his warning and not be surprised when you get up in the morning and he’s gone – just a thought. But all these adventures are learning experiences for M and for us, her readers, 40 years after the original publication, 70 years after the adventure.
Still I found myself admiring Gellhorn's quick and direct writing style, impressed by the amount of description she is able to capture in just a few words. I loved reading her stories that contained the honest appraisals of her thoughts and impressions of this most extraordinary woman.
Along with Freya Stark and Beryl Markham and I would have Martha Gellhorn as one of my travel muses. Her books are never far from reach. I would often take a book of hers with me when I went traveling and simply say “Oh Martha”. Travels with Myself and Another opened my eyes to the depth of knowledge in women's lives and stories. And the best of Gellhorn doesn’t typically discuss how her gender has anything to do with her ability to travel and I really love her for that. Reading her I always got a real sense of, “If M can do it, so can I!” not because of my gender but because of my insatiable curiosity and need to travel and explore.

Magic, mages and more
If you’ve played the Dragon Age series you’ve probably noticed some differences here and there. Origins was heavy on tactics, something Inquisition lacks considerably, and Dragon Age 2 allowed for blood magic, which Origins had little of and Inquisition barely mentions. All lore aside, we can experience magic in Thedas more closely through our mage companions in each game ( or your character if you chose the mage class).
First, i’ll discuss briefly how magic spells have changed throughout the games, then i’ll analyse a mage pattern and how it broke. And finally i’ll entertain some future over the top possibilities.
Origins and DA2 were designed primarily to be played on PC, and we see this more clearly on Origins through its tactics-heavy gameplay. Spells in Origins are more suitable to a carefully planned combat strategy, with passive and status-inducing spells presented in a variety that didn’t survive into the following games. DA2 also allows for tactics but the combat system is more dynamic, it’s not necessary to pause/unpause 5 times per second, one can do battles in real time and as a result spells were considerably reduced, prioritizing active/offensive spells, and almost entirely eliminating status-inducing and supportive spells.
Unlike its predecessors, Inquisition was way more console-friendly and all but eliminated the tactics system from Origins; now combat was fast, direct, with a tactical screen capable of basic commands and overall limited, and spell trees were reduced to the bare minimum, with elemental attacks, and very few defensive spells, having completely eliminated healing.
So, in short, summonings disappeared after Origins, as did most of the Creation, Spirit and Entropy trees. By Inquisition, none of the glyphs or hexes survived. Some spells icons from DA2 reappear in Inquisition, but most from Origins never made it past it, and some spells changed name or spell tree between games. There’s a gradual simplification of spell trees from one game to the next, adjusting combat to a more straightforward style, with less support or status-inducing spells and an increasing concentration of active spells with enhancing passive ones. On the other hand, Healing all but disappeared from Inquisition spells, “spirit healer” not even surviving as a specialization, with the only healing spell available being Revival which as the name implies you can only use on an already fallen party member. Surprisingly, Dispel made it through all three games staying in the same spell tree, Spirit, and elemental spells remained the same across all games, with minor changes.
Now let’s take a look at all our main mage companions.
In Origins we have Morrigan (apostate, shapeshifter), and Wynne (circle mage, spirit healer, vessel for spirit of Faith). In DA2 we have Merrill (dalish, blood mage), and Anders (former circle mage turned apostate, healer, vessel for spirit of Justice/Vengeance). In inquisition however we get three mages: Dorian (Tevinter pariah, pyromancer, necromancer), Vivienne (circle loyalist, icemancer, knight-enchanter) and Solas (apostate, electromancer, rift mage).
Just in case the pattern isn’t clear enough..In both games we get an apostate and formally educated and trained mage, a mage who lived in the wild and a mage who lived in cities, a mage who dwells in obscure or forbidden magic used for offense and a mage dedicated primarily to healing and support, a mage who deals in dangerous magic but remains their own and a mage who despite dealing in safer magic harbours a spirit within (by Chantry dogma, an abomination).
This pattern is broken in Inquisition; while we still get an apostate and a circle mage, we also get a mage that while not from the circle still isn’s technically an apostate (Dorian), we also get no healer but we do get a mage that specializes in obscure magic (necromancy), and we don’t really get a mage that has lived in the wild but one who’s lived outside of Thedosian society (Solas, being who he is and having recently woken up from the longest nap ever). And instead of getting a mage sharing their body with a spirit of the Fade, we get an ancient elf who secretely is an elvhen god and the creator of the Veil. Solas breaks the pattern (as well as everything else, apparently).
I’ll focus on Inquisition from now on and leave Solas for last.
Auto-level evidences the default element of choice of each mage. Solas is an electromancer, Dorian is a pyromancer, and Vivienne is an icemancer. Dorian preferring fire makes sense as a Tevinter who constantly complains the South is cold, implying his homeland has a warmer weather he sorely misses. Vivienne choosing cold spells goes perfectly with her personality, presenting herself as an ice queen.
Here is where it begins to get a bit tricky: Specializations.
Dorian’s is Necromancy, which would make a lot of sense...if he was Nevarran. Being a Tevinter it’d make more sense for him to be a Blood Mage. But Origins and particularly DA2 already exposed blood magic, painted it in all its evil colours, made it pretty clear it’s the wrong kind of magic to use for all the dangers it entails. By the time we get Inquisition, we face an actual Magister Siderial and Tevinter is painted as this degenerate empire full of evil blood mages, so getting a blood mage specialization was out of the table. Therefore our Tevinter ally got the next most questionable line of magic, necromancy. Because nothing says “almost evil” as raising up the death to fight for you and draining lifeforce from your enemies.
Next we have Vivienne who specialises as a Knight-Enchanter (KE). She’s a Circle mage, a Loyalist at that, and KE is a path reserved for Circle mages allowed to engage in combat when requested. But we learn from Solas that the powers used by Knight-Enchanters have their origin in the Arcane Warriors of the ancient elves. Vivienne has no known connection to anything elven, so her being able to become a KE is just another example of the cultural appropriation of elven elements and knowledge done by humans and the Chantry.
None of the specializations are entirely new, as already stated KE takes from Arcane Warriors, much of the Necromancer tree comes from the previous games’ Entropy trees, and the Primal and Force trees lend some spells to the supposedly brand new Rift tree.
Then there’s Solas, who is the default Rift Mage once specializations become available. The Rift spell tree is a post-Breach occurrence, as it was developed by mages studying the Breach and resulting rifts that appeared all over Thedas. It should have unique spells yet it recycles old ones: Stonefist no longer deals physical damage as it did in Origins and DA2 when it was in the Primal tree and meant hurling rocks at the enemy, but spirit damage as it now involves summoning a boulder directly from the Fade. Similarly, DA2’s Force spell Fist of the Maker and subsequent upgrades, Maker’s Hammer and Maker’s Fury, described as “slamming enemies into the ground” with some invisible force became Veilstrike in the Rift tree of Inquisition, there described as “smashing nearby foes to the ground” by “recreating your own fist from from the essence of the Fade”.
Knowing what we know about Solas, his specialization makes sense, he’s responsible for the Veil’s existence so of course he’d know how to manipulate its properties. He’s Fen’Harel, after all.
Still with me? Good, because this ride is about to get bumpy.
As the default Rift mage he can use Veilstrike, recreating his “own fist from the essence of the Fade”,  but Veilstrike is actually a rename of Fist of the Maker…So what Solas is really doing whenever he casts Veilstrike is casting the Fist of the Maker. By recreating his own fist..It’s all in the name. Fist of the Maker pre-dates Rift magic, but its rebranding as Veilstrike is post-Breach and named after the Veil and not the Maker, possibly because the one who introduces us to this particular spell now is not Andrastian but the ancient elvhen god and creator of the Veil.  Technically speaking  we could say Solas, having created the Veil ages ago and therefore being the one responsible for the present reality of Thedas, is then, in a way, its maker. It’s a wild idea, I know, and there are some bits of lore scattered around that could support it, but i’m not jumping into that abyss yet-
In addition, let’s go back to his auto-leveled spells. At first sight there’s no basis for Solas being an electromancer. But like his Rift specialization, his magic preferences are lore/plot oriented. To consider:
Solas prefers the Storm tree. Skyhold is, by its very name, the place from where the Veil was installed. Some codices found at Skyhold mention electricity being used in unknown rituals at Skyhold’s location. Solas was responsible for creating the Veil.
With this in mind it can be concluded that Solas has always been an electromancer, and even used his electric powers in some way to help put up the Veil in the past.
tl;dr Solas was originally an electromancer and is a Rift Mage because he created the Veil and knows it better than anyone else. Also, he may be the Maker. (loljk or am i)
Now what would you say if I told you Solas possibly also does blood magic? Too much of a stretch? Maaaybe..Except maybe not. He’s not against it, thinks of it as simply a means to an end, and doesn’t disapprove of it unless it’s done in excess for all the wrong reasons (as they do in Tevinter) or is used to limit freedom like when used to bind unwilling spirits or control people’s minds. It’s just an idea, but there must be an explanation why blood magic and lyrium (titan blood, so, still blood magic) can be used to tear the Veil open. The Magisters did it before, and a second time when Corypheus sacrificed Divine Justinia in a ritual that also involved...Solas’ Foci. That is, Fen’ Harel’s Foci.
From Tevinter Nights we learn Solas is after the red lyrium idol (again, titan blood) which he claims belongs to him and is a necessary element for the ritual he must perform to take down the Veil. A ritual for which he’s willing to destroy Thedas as we know it, regrettably causing the dead of thousands. For all we know, those deaths are a necessary sacrifice because they are part of a massive blood magic ritual, Solas’ own death may also be part of it. If the blood of a Divine could be used to open the Breach, what could the blood of Fen’Harel be used for?? Solas’ new powers as Fen’Harel are, frankly, terrifying*, and he’s decided to do whatever it takes to see his mission through, sadly.
And all this leads me to future possibilities..we can imagine with Solas actively trying to take down the Veil there will be places where the Veil gets super thin or begins to disappear. Pockets of space where reality no longer respects natural laws of physics or logic. The Fade is fluid, ever changing, with the right power it can be reshaped at will and i imagine some of that may begin to leak into the physical world, so we may get mage (or spirit! )companions with skills capable of taking advantage of that.
Lastly, i may add, right now and as far as we can see, Solas is OP as fuck*. He can kill you in your sleep from within your dreams. He can turn you into stone with just thinking of it, which means in a way he can bend the laws of nature of the physical world like he can do in the Fade, If in the future we get close to him,if we get our hands on artifacts or intel.. it won’t because we gathered the right people and resources, it won’t be because of clever tactics and espionage, it won’t be at all because we did anything right. It’ll be because he allows it, because he let us get that far.
If we stop him at all it’ll be because he wants to be stopped.
(Apologies in advance if some of this is poorly written, i revised it so many times words no longer look like words. Also half of this is just wild speculation on my part and nobody has to agree with me, after 5 years i may be connecting imaginary dots but hey, it’s fun! If you read this far...i am so sorry, thanks)

McAfee total protection 2020 reviews
McAfee total protection 2020 reviews - McAfee has three consumer security products – but which is best, and how do they compare to rivals.
Where to seek out Mcafee Activation Code?
The Mcafee security package is simple to setup & install at www.mcafee.com/activate. Simply find a 25-character alpha-numeric code that is written on the backside of the retail card. Here may be a sample Product Key to let you understand:
xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx
McAfee 2020 Antivirus solutions review:
Installing McAfee Total Protection was a long nightmare during our last review, but this time, fortunately, it was very different. There were no error messages, no delays, no hassles of any kind: the setup tool just downloaded the full Total Protection package, installed it on our hard drive and let us know when it was done. Simple.
The installation did have one unusual aspect. We installed Total Protection on a system already equipped with Kaspersky Security Cloud installed, just to see what it would do. Most antivirus packages will ask you to remove competing for software to avoid conflicts, but McAfee's installer said nothing at all.
Does this matter?
It probably depends on the user. If McAfee might conflict with other security software, enabling newbies to run two antivirus apps side by side is likely to be a bad idea. But if you're an expert, confident you can reconfigure one antivirus to reduce the chance of problems, and sure you can cope with whatever issues arise, you might see this as an advantage.
After the installation was complete, Total Protection prompted us to reboot. We did, and again there were no hassles or unexpected events – no sign of change other than a shiny new McAfee icon in our system tray.
Interface :
The McAfee Total Protection interface grabs far more valuable screen real-estate than most, yet does almost nothing with it.
The expansive opening screen contains a big green tick to show your security status, for instance but has barely any other useful content.
The rest of the console is largely wasted with a button to help you protect other devices, pointless system information ('we are protecting 309 apps/connections/tasks'; is that good, bad? how are you supposed to know?), a button to view a security report, and a large panel recommending that you set up the password manager, or optimize your apps.
These might have some value, but we would much rather have a button to launch a Quick Scan, a line that tells us when our definitions were last updated, or something with real practical value.
Clicking a small icon that comprises three dots reveals a more detailed status report of Total Protection's various features, so, for instance, you can confirm that antivirus, the firewall, and the update system are all working correctly. That's the kind of information which should be visible at a glance, rather than hidden, but at least it's only a click away.
It's not obvious, but this status display also doubles as a menu, and for example, clicking the Virus Scan status loads the Scan dialog.
You can also click various tabs at the top of the screen – PC Security, PC Performance, My Privacy – to view separate panels with their own groups of features. These also waste plenty of space, so, for instance, the PC Performance area includes only three useful elements: a couple of buttons and an on/off status indicator. We've seen more features on desktop widgets.
This approach could have some appeal to casual users who might be overwhelmed by lots of buttons or technical information, but more experienced types might become frustrated.
Antivirus:
McAfee Total Protection keeps its antivirus scanning options to a minimum: just a Quick Scan, a Full System Scan and the ability to scan custom items directly from the Explorer right-click menu.
What you don't get is a specific removable drives scan, a custom scan you can define from the interface, or the ability to set up a new scan type or define how it works. For example, Avast's Windows products can be used to set up a scan that checks specific file types in the folders you need, using the scanning technologies and rules you define, and you can then run that scan whenever you like. There's nothing like that here.
Scan times were a little slower than average, although acceptable.
Scan reports are poor, and short on detail. Our first Quick Scan proudly displayed 'Issues: 0' at the top, while also stating 'All issues fixed', 'We wiped out all the threats on your PC' and listing cryptic names of three threats it had removed.
As Total Protection hadn't asked us if it could remove these 'threats', we clicked on the first, 'JTI/Suspect.19661214ca37a5b9d3b', in the hope of finding out exactly what the program had just deleted.
A browser window opened with a lengthy URL including multiple parameters, presumably intended to display a page with more details. But this immediately redirected to the front page of McAfee's Threat Center, with no more information at all.
A 'View Details' button was also less than helpful, telling us the engine had detected three dangerous files, but not what or where they were.
Eventually, we found the details we needed in the Quarantine section, but it really shouldn't take so much effort to locate such fundamental information.
We noticed another oddity in the Details screen suggesting McAfee's Quick Scan checks files only, ignoring processes, critical system files or boot records. If true, that's disappointing; we think checking running processes should be one of the key elements of a Quick Scan.
Protection:
AV-Comparatives' Real-World Protection Test is an intensive benchmark that pits 16 of the world's biggest antivirus engines against the very latest threats. The company runs 10 tests every year, making it a great way to monitor particular vendors over time.
McAfee's most recent test performance was average, with the July-October summary report placing the company in 8th place with a protection rate of 99.4%.
That's a long way behind the leaders – Avira and Symantec blocked 100% of threats – but it's ahead of some big-name competition, including Avast (99.3%), F-Secure (99.3%) and even Kaspersky (99.1%).
The AV-Test Home Windows report for October 2019 broadly matches this picture, with McAfee not at the top of the list, but performing well enough to earn it one of AV-Test's 'Top Product' awards.
We can't begin to compete with the time and resources the big testing labs put into their work, but what we can do is add to their findings with a small test of our own.
We have created a very, very simple ransomware simulator which spiders through a folder tree, reading and encrypting images, audio files, Office documents and more. By running this on a review system, we're aiming to see whether an antivirus can detect undiscovered ransomware by behavior alone, and discover how many files, if any, might be lost before an attack can be stopped.
The results were disappointing, as McAfee Total Protection left our simulator to run to completion and encrypt thousands of files. Other tools typically do much better, with, for instance, Kaspersky Security Cloud Free 2020 not only detecting and killing the simulator but also recovering the very few files our program had managed to encrypt.
However, this result should be interpreted with care. McAfee may have missed our test program, unlike the best of the competition, but we can't be sure why or what that tells us about the security suite overall. What we do know from the lab tests is that McAfee can detect most real-world malware from behavior alone, and that's the most important result.
Firewall:
Total Protection includes a firewall that automatically makes intelligent choices about which programs on your system can access the internet. This is mostly tucked away within the interface, and most users won't ever have to know of its existence.
Experts get access to a wide range of firewall settings, including the ability to open or close specific ports or define custom rules for individual applications. These options are harder to find than we'd like, though, and it took us some time to begin to figure out what was possible.
Even then, we were often puzzled. The firewall has an Intrusion Detection system, for instance, but it's turned off by default, only has two settings (Basic or High) and even the web knowledgebase has no real information on what it does and the consequences of turning it on (or off).
More features:
Total Protection's spam filter wasn't installed by default in our previous review, but this time it set itself up correctly, added an extension to our Outlook setup and began filtering mail.
The performance was excellent, with the filter detecting most spam and not falsely flagging any legitimate emails. But if this doesn't work for you, a wide range of settings enable customizing the protection to suit your needs.
The True Key Password Manager allows for creating and syncing passwords across up to five devices. It's strong on multifactor authentication methods – email, fingerprint, the second device, Windows Hello, more – but not so good in other areas, with no general form-filling abilities and no secure password sharing.
A Vulnerability Scanner is supposed to check for and install missing application updates, but it did nothing for us. We tried two ways of launching it, and in each case, nothing happened; there was no new dialog box, no error message, nothing at all.
Other apparent features of the program are entirely separate tools which you must download and install separately. Clicking ‘Protect Me On The Web’ opens the website for McAfee WebAdvisor, for instance, a browser extension that defends you against malware, malicious sites and more. It's handy, but it's also available for free, and you don't have to buy Total Protection to use it.
The feature list continues in the PC Performance area, where you'll find a couple of speedup options.
App Boost optimizes CPU and me/O priorities for foreground applications to improve performance. This won't make much difference – sometimes it'll have no noticeable effect at all – but the company suggests you could see an 11-14% speed increase in the targeted apps, which, if true, is worth having.
A Web Boost feature sounds promising, but it's just a separate module that stops videos automatically playing on your choice of many popular websites (YouTube, Netflix, Twitch.tv, Skype.com, ClickMeeting.com and many more). It's a reasonable idea, and may well make web browsing a little less annoying (a worthwhile goal all on its own), but it's probably not going to deliver much of a speed boost.
There are multiple minor tools to explore. A QuickClean option removes tracking cookies and temporary files and can be scheduled to run automatically. A Shredder securely deletes confidential files so they can't be undeleted, and a Network Monitor looks for intruders connecting to your Wi-Fi. Experienced users will probably have more powerful freeware tools already, but these are easy to use and convenient to access and add a little extra value to the suite
Final verdict:
McAfee Total Protection has lots of features, but none are outstanding, and they're not always well implemented (the interface isn't great, the vulnerability scanner simply didn't work). It's hard to see why you would choose this package when others are faster, cheaper, more accurate or easier to use.
MCAFEE TOTAL PROTECTION MULTI-DEVICE: McAfee total protection 2020 reviews-
As you might guess from the name, McAfee Total Protection Multi-Device isn't just another Windows-based security tool; it has apps for Android, iOS, and Mac, too.
The standard license covers five devices, too, up from the miserly one you'll get with Total Security Individual.
Turn on auto-renewal for your subscription and US users also get access to McAfee's ID Theft Protection Essentials service, which monitors the web for signs of trouble and helps you recover from any problems it finds.
That's an unusual feature for a security suite, and it doesn't seem to have bumped up the price. Despite its premium functionality, McAfee Total Protection Multi-Device costs a very reasonable $40 for a five device, one-year license, $100 on renewal. Norton 360 with LifeLock Select, another major suite with identity theft protection, is priced at a relatively chunky $100 for year one, $150 after that.
Multi-platform :
McAfee's Android app is a capable product with all the essential technology you'll find in the Windows version, along with a bunch of more mobile-oriented tools.
The free edition of the app includes on-demand scanning, anti-theft (GPS blocking, remote cleaning, more), and useful reports highlighting which apps are using the most data. Of course, there are ads, too.
The paid version removes the ads and throws in browsing protection, device cleaning, an app locker and related Guest Mode (control the apps a guest can see on your device), a battery booster and extra protection from unsecured Wi-Fi networks. It's a quality set of tools, and the current 4.5-star rating on the Google Play store suggests most users are happy.
McAfee's iOS offering also has a free version with basic functions, including wireless scanning, anti-theft, and a media vault to securely store private photos and videos. The paid edition also blocks malicious links via McAfee's Safe Web and protects you from phishing sites and ARP Spoofing (that's low-level network trickery).
McAfee's Mac edition doesn't have as many extras, but still, more than covers the essentials, with antivirus, firewall, and browsing protection.
Identity Theft Protection:
Total Protection has a more interesting and unusual extra in a separate Identity Theft protection service for its US customers.
Cyber Monitoring is one of the service highlights, regularly checking the dark web for personal details including your social security number, email addresses, phone numbers, banking and credit card details, driver's license, passport and more. If any of your information shows up online in a data breach, you'll be alerted.
Other features include Social Media Monitoring which alerts you to risks with the content you're sharing, and an optional Social Security Number trace and Address Change Monitoring service which could warn you of scammers trying to steal and use your personal details.
This is still a relatively basic product. You won't get to see your credit report, for instance, or be warned when your score changes, and there's no monitoring of loan or credit card applications, court or criminal records.
If you've no plans to buy separate identity theft protection, anyway, this won't matter much. Whatever the McAfee service gives you, it'll be better than what you'd have otherwise.
But if you've very specific ideas on what you need, or maybe you're looking for the best possible protection, it's probably wise to go shopping for it separately. Check out McAfee's standalone Identity Theft Protection plans to get an idea of what's available, and what it might cost.
Overall value:
Thinking of buying McAfee Total Protection Individual? Then stop! Unless you're completely sure you'll only ever want to protect a single PC, signing up for McAfee Total Protection Multi-Device makes a lot more sense. It's only fractionally more expensive than Total Protection Individual ($40 in year one, $100 on renewal, as opposed to $35 and $80 respectively), yet covers up to five devices rather than one, and supports Android, iOS and Mac, as well as Windows.
Whether Total Protection Multi-Device is good enough to make you choose McAfee in the first place – well, that's more open to question. Probably not, although McAfee's identity protection service might just win you over.
MCAFEE TOTAL PROTECTION FAMILY: McAfee total protection 2020 reviews-
McAfee Total Protection Family doubles your device allowance to a generous 10, but the price stays much the same. You'll pay $45 in year one, and $120 on renewal.
The upgrade gets you another major benefit in McAfee's Safe Family, a parental controls package for Windows, Android and iOS (beware, it doesn't work on Mac). That's a big deal because this isn't the usual feeble security suite addition; McAfee sells it as a standalone app for $50 a year.
Safe Family's core features are much as you'd expect. You're able to block websites by content type, restrict access to specific apps, or limit device access to particular times of the day.
The package is easy to configure, too. Safe Family uses default settings based on the age of your child, getting you off to a quick start, then you can tweak them further to suit your needs.
Furthermore, it's flexible. You can add multiple schedules to decide exactly when your kids can and can't use their devices. If the content filter doesn't quite suit your needs, you're able to allow or block your chosen websites. And, unusually, Safe Family recognizes that absolute rules don't always work. If your kids need more screen time or want to access a specific site, a Requests messaging system allows them to ask you, and – if you approve – they can benefit right away.
Safe Family does a good job of keeping you up to date on what your kids are doing. As soon as it's set up, you're able to view the apps and websites they're accessing, along with any attempts to break the rules. You can even check the location of your kids' device on a map.
It's far from perfect – we'd like more content filtering categories, for instance, and there's no built-in protection to prevent anyone uninstalling the Windows edition – but Safe Family tramples all over the parental controls tools in most security suites.
If you need a decent parental controls system, and you have lots of devices to protect, McAfee Total Protection Family might be a sensible choice. Its $45 cost in year one is only $10 more than you'll pay for the basic Total Protection Individual, so there's minimal risk. Check out the trial, see how it works for you.

MP3 To CDA Converter
Typically, you want to convert your video and just keep the audio and put it aside as an MP3. OKAY, use the next CDA to MP3 converter and observe its step-by-step info to solve any CDA playback or edition difficulty by converting CDA to the most nicely-liked MP3, WAV, AAC, WMA, etc. CDA simply isn't the exact audio file but the CD indexing file. There's an audio-file converter constructed into iTunes that you need to use to convert AACs to MP3s. You can solely convert cda to mp3 online songs from AAC to MP3 if they're DRM-free. If a monitor has DRM (Digital Rights Management) , it may possibly't be remodeled, since conversion is likely to be a technique to remove the DRM. Converting mp4 converter to mp3 free download music information to MP3 is a course of you possibly can full using audio software program applications like iTunes, Swap and mp4 converter to mp3 free download dBpoweramp. Each of these functions is ready to changing MP4 music information to MP3 and is free to acquire and set up on your laptop computer. This free on-line audio converter allows you to convert audio recordsdata directly out of your internet browser. Convert MP3 to WAV, M4A to MP3, WAV to MP3, MP3 to M4R (Ringtones), MP3 to M4A, OGG to MP3. Just choose the audio file, then click the Add File" button and watch for just a few seconds. My RealPlayer was working positive until someting should have changed previously few months. I tried to play some of my beforehand downloaded (flv) information however, a few of them seem to have a mysterious X mark on the recordsdata. Thus, an error message appears stating " the next file could not be situated on your pc". I am confused as a result of the files seem additionally in itunes but, they cannot be performed. Some of the similar information now marked with an X have been tranfered to my ipod and are stilll working. FileZigZag is an internet audio converter service that may convert most common audio codecs, as long as they do not exceed a hundred and eighty MB. All you do is add the original audio file, select the specified output format, and then stay up for an e-mail with a hyperlink to the converted file. Play Any Audio From iOS, Mac, or iTunes If you happen to want to take heed to music by way of Spotify, your particular person personal iTunes assortment, or one other app totally, you probably can. Nevertheless it certainly will not work flawlessly like Apple Music for the reason that solely streaming service constructed into the HomePod is Apple Music. First, let's take a fast take a look at the fundamentals: MP3 stands for MPEG-1 Audio Layer three. The format was permitted in 1991 as a way for audio to be compressed and diminished to a file that was more easily transmitted online. In the easiest definition, MP3s hold their size to a minimum by lowering the knowledge, or sound, that the human ear can't decide up on. While there have been MP1 and MP2 file formats, MP3 improved on the compression and have become the standard in audio recordsdata that could possibly be shared without sacrificing a noticeable quantity of quality within the course of—though that's, clearly, highly subjective. This audio converter cell app is barely out there for Android units , but it's free and has a powerful toolbox to transform and manipulate audio files. It supports all the favored audio formats, together with MP3, WAV and AAC, and has an extensive record of features for enhancing and merging audio recordsdata once they're converted. The audio editing instrument is easy to make use of and lets you zoom in on a portion of the audio file, trim the clip and set it as a ringtone or notification tone. This app also has a function that merges a number of songs together to make a custom remix. Most of us like music, right? We may have our individual preferences in relation to genres, but the appreciation for this artwork form is common. Plugging in headphones and shedding yourself in the world of rhythm and beats is one of the simplest ways to beat exhaustion. Portable music units and phones are mostly used to construct an intensive music assortment. One problem you might face if you're in the behavior of downloading music from the Internet is of format incompatibility. There are numerous audio formats out there now and most devices usually are not able to supporting all of them. A pal and I've just downloaded model 2.2.zero, and examined each the 32bit version and the 64bit version, and now we have found a common problem. When utilizing the profile choice of MP3 and leaving the defaults alone, it works and saves the audio in an MP3 format, and the listed container is indicating Containers (.mp3). The moment we change the bitrate to a higher degree, both a hundred and sixty or in my case 192, the output container now signifies Containers (.ts), and the resulting created file is garbled, mainly destroyed. Even when I pressure the extension to MP3 by altering the container choice to All information (.)", and the file title and extension accordingly, it does not help. I have not examined further with other enter file codecs, however we are currently tryingmp4 andmp4a recordsdata, video recordings from our cellphones, and making an attempt to extract the audio only.
The first is that it will probably convert video recordsdata not natively supported by the Mac OS. You might, as an illustration, convertavi andmkv information. Then, the most effective answer is to find a new mannequin, or obtain it once more from the same supply as sooner than (maybe for some purpose in the earlier session the download of the CDA file has not been completed and it could't free cda to mp4 converter be opened correctly). CDex is an open supply Digital Audio CD Extractor or CD ripper software program that can be utilized to convert cda to mp3 and other codecs together with FLAC, M4A, WMA, OGG and lots of others. Each format has its personal presets and you will create your private presets by altering the default parameters. The knowledge first needs to be converted to another format (likewav ormp3) as a technique to be stored on a tricky disk.CDA information, which stand for Compact Disc Audio information, are digital files that characterize data in a CD. In the event you see the contents of a CD on Home windows, you will discover a number ofcda recordsdata such that every file corresponds to a single soundtrack. You may play a soundtrack by double clicking acda file so long as the CD is within the optical drive. Nevertheless, to play these recordsdata straight from your laptop, you should rip them to music file formats akin to MP3, WAV, WMA, and so forth. But why? The explanation behind this is thatcda information are only pointers created by the Windows CD driver which level to the places of sound files on the CD. This suggests that CDA recordsdata do not comprise any musical information.

Problems in tech support #???/??? aka “How do you not know how to turn it off and back on again?”
The sheer amount of people who don’t know how to turn a computer off and on, or what restarting a computer is never fails to amaze me
So I just got off a call with a lady... let’s call her.. Susan. Susan was actually pretty nice, called in to say she was having trouble getting her emails to send after she’d changed her password this morning. TL;DR her Outlook was still trying to connect to the Exchange server with her old password.
I asked if she’d rebooted since changing her password (99% of the time that’s the issue, passwords haven’t sync’d up, restarting fixes it) and she said yes. I asked again:
“You’re sure you restarted? Like, the PC powered off and back on and you logged back in?” “Yes.” “And you did that today, after you changed your password?” “Yes.” “And you’re positive you didn’t just log off, that the PC actually fully shut down and powered back on?” “Yes. I’m sure.”
So I remote in to this lady’s PC and check her up time: 22 hours.
So,  literally not possible she restarted her computer today. I again ask if she’s sure she actually hit “restart” and not “log off”
“Yes. Positive.”
FFS
So I reboot the computer, which solves the problem. But the lady gets angry “Why did it work when you did it??!! I restarted before calling you!!”
Me: ... Susan your computer has been on for 22 hours. It’s literally not possible that it was restarted today. Susan: ... 22 hours? Me: Yes. 22 hours. Susan: ... Oh. I guess I logged out Me: Correct. Susan: But... that’t the same thing, right? Logging off, shutting down, restarting... they’re all the exact same?
Tumblr media
Long post under the cut
A few more anecdotes since I’m in the sharing mood
I had a dude at my old job... let’s call him Gary. Gary was a piece of shit. He was just an asshole. An asshole who’s goal each day was to just be a fucking dick to people (his own secretary told me that). Unfortunately for me, Gary was also largely computer illiterate, but refused to acknowledge that and would just insist he knew what he was doing (he never did).
Anyway, Gary would call in every few weeks with the same issue: “My computer is moving slow, things are freezing/not opening correctly, programs are crashing, etc”.
And so we’d always ask “Gary, when’s the last time you restarted your computer?”
Now. Gary did not know how to restart his computer. He did not know how to turn it off or on. I literally had to walk him through how to press the power button once, hand to God. In the years I worked there, I spent... I don’t even know how many times, walking Gary through how to restart, telling him how often he should be doing it, etc.
Gary would bounce between two things:
1. He JUST restarted his PC and he’s still having the issue so we don’t know what we’re talking about.
And when we’d remote in and show him that his computer has been on for like 2 months, he’d jump to:
2. He never restarts his computer because it takes too long.
IT TAKES TOO LONG BECAUSE YOU NEVER RESTART IT YOU FUCKING IDIOT.
Anyway, Gary calls in one day with a bunch of issues he “is sure are not fixable” (they absolutely were, super tiny things he should know how to do himself). I check his up time, and realize... it.. to the literal fucking hour and minute, has been on since the last time I restarted it, weeks ago. Gary is going on and on about how he’s been restarting like we tell him to and it doesn’t work so we’re all dumb yada yada yada. I show Gary his up time, then show him the ticket time from the last time I restarted his computer, and that they were the same, and explained “Gary, you cannot possibly be restarting your computer as much as you say. It’s literally been on since the last time I restarted it weeks ago.” Gary seems to take this in stride, asks a few questions (same shit I’ve explained to him time and time again), I help him with all his other issues, he thanks me for my help and we call it a day.
Gary then calls back in after I’ve gone home for the day to “Demand information on [redacted]’s ‘computer restart policy’.”
If it sounds like bullshit, it’s because it is.  Because there isn’t one. So when the person who answered explained there isn’t one, but explained that he should be restarting ideally every day, at the bare bare minimum once a week. Gary then starts to complain about me, saying that I’d ‘’called him dumb’, (nope) and ‘laughed at him’ (nope). The analyst, having known me, knows that’s not a thing I would do, so he pressed him. Gary back peddles and says “Well, no, she didn’t call me dumb or laugh... but she was extremely rude.” Analyst asks for more details, because if it were true (it wasn’t) it’s a big deal. Gary back peddles some more says ‘well, no, she was perfectly polite and helpful... but she made me feel stupid (all because I told him he needs to restart his PC)”. Luckily, I’d been with the company long enough where my manager didn’t even look into it because he knew it was bullshit. But still.
A year or two before Gary, there was... Debra. I actually think her actual name was Debra, iirc.
Anyway, Debra was also not very tech savvy, and, surprise surprise, never rebooted her computer. She had a really old Windows PC that she wanted to use to work from home with, and somehow made it work. But, she’d been having troubles getting things to load, things were crashing, freezing, etc. Unfortunately for Debra, when she called in the first few times, she got people who don’t really know what they’re doing, so no one though to check “Hey how long has this computer been on?”
I remote in, and realize that a LOT of the icons on her desktop are super outdated. Like, several updates ago outdated. So I check her up time.
ALMOST 4 FUCKING MONTHS. FOUR. FUCKING. MONTHS. She had not restarted her PC in FOUR GODDAMN MONTHS.
So I point this out to Debra, who asks if that’s the reason behind “all this bullshit” (keep in mind, this is her own personal computer, we are technically not required to help her with it and could’ve told her to go fuck herself). I say “probably” and that we’ll need to restart, but inform her restarting could take a long while, as she’s got 4 fucking months of updates.
Debra: Well! I hope you have the passwords!!! Me: ... the passwords? Debra: YES. The passwords. Since you wanna turn things off.
First of all bitch, I don’t wanna do anything. I’m doing this because I’m nice.
Me: .. the passwords...? To your own personal computer? Debra: *now realizing she sounds stupid* Yeah.. Me: ... Debra...why would I have the passwords to your own personal computer? Debra: *huffs and puffs and starts swearing under her breath*
We restart (keep in mind, I TOLD her it could take a long while because she’s likely got a billion updates), and of course it takes a long while. I hang on the line with her (again, a thing I do not have to do) and the entire time she bitches.
Debra: WELL, how long is this going to take?! Me: Can’t say. Debra: what do you mean you can’t say? Me: Well, you’ve got over 100 updates (it was like 106 or something). Debra: WHY DO I HAVE SO MANY?! Me: ... because you haven’t restarted your computer in almost 4 months. You have about 4 months of updates just from Windows, not to mention from [redacted].
The updates take probably over 30 minutes or so. Again, I don’t have to help this lady, and the long call time is fucking up my stats, which negatively impacts my performance reviews. But I’m nice and want her to be able to work.
Debra spends the entire time screaming and yelling at me, before the updates finish and she goes
“Oh, now it looks like my computer in the office does.”
Yeah... because it’s updated, finally. Debra was a cunt, tbh.
Alright, one more before I get outta here
So right after Windows 8 came out, [redacted] decided to upgrade their systems from XP to 8. Which, huge fucking jump if you’re not tech savvy. So this lady calls in, zero idea what her name was... well call her... Lisa. Lisa calls in to complain because her computer is freezing, running slow, yada yada yada.
I, knowing that with Windows 8, the shut down/restart options are hard to find for many people, ask “Have you been restarting your computer?”
Lisa: Yes! I restart it every night! Me: You sure? You’re sure it’s fully powering off every night? Lisa: YES! I’ve been working on computers longer than you’ve been alive (she sounds fucking ancient so that’s probably true). Me: Ok. It’s just in the Windows 8 OS... Lisa: *cuts me off* *shouts over me* *demands I remote in to her computer*
I remote in, check her up time. About 3 weeks iirc. So I ask Lisa
Me: When you say you’re restarting the computer, powering it off, where are you going to do that? Lisa: ... the uh... welll... Me: Can you show me just so I can see? You said you do it every night, what do you do? Lisa: *now indignant* I go to blah blah and hit sign out. Every night.
... ok so that’s not restarting.
Me: Ok, so that’s not restarting. All the ‘sign out’ option does is sign you out of your Windows account. It does not power the PC down. Lisa: ... No. That’s not what I was told. Me: Told by who? Lisa: *stammers and refuses to answer* Me: Well, if you were told that, you were told wrong, unfortunately. *shows her where the restart and shut down options are* *gives usual ‘the importance of restarting your computer’ speech* Lisa: *proceeds to tell me I’m wrong* *screams at me some more*
Spoiler alert: Restarting her computer fixed her problem.
One thing that always irks me is when people say:
“I’m not a tech.  I’m not trained in technical support” etc. Because... you don’t have to be a tech, you don’t have to have any certifications or special training to know how to turn something off and back on again. Especially if it’s something that you own.
TONS of people (mostly iPhone users in my experience) do not know how to turn their phones off. Many of them don’t even know you can. Have no idea where/what the power button is, etc. Like... this is a thing you own, that you likely picked out and bought yourself... learn the basics of how to fucking use it.

Tax and Self Employment Report
My career after qualifying is to be an art therapist. Typical working hours are 37 to 39, thought they are variable and will include a lot of paperwork/reports and evening work. The average starting salary is £30,401. The jobs are freelance of self-employed. Settings include hospitals, education settings and personal buildings.
Before starting anything, I will need to set up my branding, identity and business plan. This will help me decide if I need to take out a loan beforehand to set-up or if it will be enough to start from a small self-investment. It will also make sure I have thought all things through and can survive the first two years (when the average new business fails). It should be expected that I will not make profit in the first year as the average earns profit during the 18-24 month. This means I need to make sure I am able to pay the house bills and other personal payments.
Going down the self-employed art therapist, gives me 2 main options. I work from my own home or I rent/buy out a space to work there. Alternatively, I could take a contracted route (freelance) and travel to where I am required. Because the subjects of the job, I will be opting to work from a rented office space. Usually there are counselling offices available throughout the UK. I will need to provide my own equipment. This includes a laptop or PC to type up my notes and a safe and secure back-up set-up.
Before I go about finding a suitable location for my business or even register myself as a business owner, I am required to have a few things in order. First, I will need to sign up for a DBS check. There are two options, an annual membership which will allow me to start work right away at any placements/business I go too. Or a one-off DBS which is only covered at the location I am working at. Whichever option I choose it is required I have it done every 3 years.
I will need to register with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Failing this I could face a fine of £5,000. I will then need to make sure I have registered for my The British Association of Art Therapists (BAAT). Although this isn’t essential it does improve trust and quality. I also get access to a range of perks such as cash back rewards, discount on books, access to the research library and can further my training at a discounted rate.
Additional requirements I will need is a bare minimal of level 3 in British sign language. This is a minimum requirement by the professional industry to be able to work with D/deaf clients. Ideally, I’d be much higher but as I am deaf myself, I am unable to get higher levels as they are aimed at interpreters. I can however submerge myself within the Deaf community. A bonus to this will be networking.
It is expected of me to keep a record of my business’s sales and expenses, send self-assessment tax returns each year and pay income tax on profits and class 2/4 national insurance. If my turnover is £85,000 or more I will be required to register for VAT. Having an accounting method will support this and is something I will be required to do solo or hire external for. If my income is £150,000 or less I can use cash basis reporting. I only record income or expenses when the money is received or a bill is paid. By doing this I won’t need to pay income tax on anything I have not yet been paid. The standard tax-free personal allowance is £12,500. This means I won’t need to pay any income tax until I am earning more. This changes if I am married and claim marriage allowance. I must also continue to pay my National Insurance contribution (NICs) if my business begins to make more than £6,365 a year. The flat rate is currently £3 a week. This is along side my income tax. If I earn £8,631 or more I will then have to pay the class 4 NICs which is 9% on the profit and 2% after. This can be paid at the same time as my income tax and class 2 NICs. Using the calculator online and creating a made-up annual income using the bare minimal of the average art therapist income, which is (37 hours @ £40 per hour (1,480) x 4 weeks = (5,920) x a year12 = 71,040. I would take home 50,824 a year after tax and NIC. Within a year I would have paid 15,916 for income tax and 156 in class 2 NIC and 4,143 in class 4 NIC.

I will need insurance to protect myself and others in the event of incidents, accidents and emergencies. My trade description falls under “holistic therapist”. Salon Gold offer a package designed just for art therapist. It includes public liability, product liability, malpractice cover and financial loss. Additional add on include legal expense, stock/equipment, money cover, personal accident and employer’s liability.
Finding a building comes with its own separate task and legal requirements, depending on if I rent or buy my building. I have been saving up with the intention to buy a property to turn into a joint art recovery centre and art community. A friend wants to do a similar thing so there is talk of potentially working together (which brings in more legal requirements and partnership agreements). When it comes to renting, I will need to find a suitable place. This requires me to think like my audience and use my personas. Considering accessibility, travel, parking and lighting. I will need to carry out a health and safety risk assessment. This is to remove any hazards I may encounter. In terms of the building itself these are things like fire safety, electrical equipment, gas safety (if there is any) and deal with any asbestos. For inside the building and a working environment I will need to con sider temperature, space/ventilation/lighting, toilet and washing, safe equipment and drinking water. There is a downloadable file on gov.uk called “Workplace health, safety and welfare: a short guide” which has been written by the health and safety executives (HSE). Not mentioned here is reasonable adjustments being made. This can be done through “access to work”. It is crucial that I follow these health and safety rules as I leave myself open to be prosecuted under the “Health and Safety at Work etc. Act1974”. I also want to be a decent human being and I believe the above requirements are a bare minimum, if that. The HSE and my local council will be responsible for making sure I am following the law. Other requirements are much the same as renting a home property. I am to pay my monthly rent, instead of council tax I am to pay something called “business rates”. Rate relief are available for business rates. I am to pay for utility bills. If I wish to have the TV or/and a radio in my waiting room or at my office I will require a TV license or/and a license to play music (two type are required PPL and PRS). This is because the UK law recognises that any music playing in public falls under “public performance”. I will also need to set up a Wi-Fi and phone line. Usually any responsibility not brought up on the lease will be my responsibility. Some offices provide all of the above within an all inclusive monthly fee.
Finally I’ll want to be opening a business account. With my current bank, they would offer me pre-customer benefits such as access to 18 months’ free day-to-day. Non-members get 6 months. I would also be given access to the financial and digital tools for my business. Having a business account means I can keep my personal and business money separate. I will be able to pay myself a wage (when I start to earn enough) and leave the money for the business in the business account. I am also entitled to better protection that you wouldn’t get with a personal account.

How To Build An Inexpensive Audio Studio At House?
Registering at home or touring has turn into really easy. Engineering reduces tools to a bare minimum, nonetheless some aspects are important to a easy recording exercise, so be cautious exactly where you select to preserve. Here I will make a description of the important elements independently. Some equipment combine numerous functions and save space. However it is crucial to know the key capabilities that make up a recording studio (build a price range songs studio). In truth the method is the same for cell studios or large infrastructures, what tends to make the big difference, it is the complexity of the available functions and the quality of the elements.
Tumblr media
The Essentials to build a price range tunes studio
The laptop: Of training course, the a lot more strong it is, the much more you can manage simultaneous tracks, digital instruments and consequences. Past the RAM and processor pace, it's important to pay interest to some particulars in the selection of the device, such as the chipset amount, motherboard manufacturer and the response velocity of the tough generate. Not like most laptop-based application, audio demands "true-time" processing, which demands special configuration to make sure a secure and reputable equipment. Until you have a soundproof enclosure, it is better to have a pc as peaceful as feasible.
The seem card:The audio card integrated into the computer is completely insufficient to function with tunes. The greatest way to perform is to use a dedicated audio card for recording and to reserve the inner sound card for listening to mp3, video and many others. For instance in mixing, this can become specifically sensible: the ideal is to use a listening change to listen alternately the blend of the task and a piece of reference in mp3. In composition section as well, it is exciting to pay attention to references without leaving his task. Technically, the greatest is to buy a sound card in a specialised songs keep. Steer clear of cards below seventy five €. The very best is to have two independent stereo outputs with switchable headphones on one or the other output. I will chat more about the fascination of this purpose in one more post. This is a quite fascinating feature to use reside, for instance.
Tumblr media
The microphone: We will discuss in element about the pickups. In summary, two types are necessary: dynamic microphones and static pickups. The dynamic pickups are wonderful on stage for getting bass drum, snare and so on. By disadvantages, for singing in the studio, they lack definition specially in the treble. The big diaphragmatic condenser microphones have an superb definition and will restore the subtleties of the voice (and its problems) to perfection. On the other hand their sensitivity will capture very effectively also any parasitic sound of the place: vehicle in the avenue, conversations in the up coming space and even the purring of the laptop. It is consequently vital to document on the headphones and to be silent in the space.
The preamp: The preamp goes with the microphone and often its value is the identical as that of the microphone. The preamp will help to homogenize the sound of the microphone by lowering the distinctions in dynamics (compressor), provide out the finesse of the voice (equalizer), "heat up" the seem (top quality of parts, lamp etc) and restore a thoroughly clean sign and "boosted" at the "line" level. I manufactured all my initial versions without preamp, so this is some thing we can do without having. Then as my top quality requirement transformed, I purchased a digital prampli and then a tube preamp. I specifically like the few Neuman TLM127 + Avalon VT737 SP that can do every little thing: voice, folks guitars, strings and the very same percussion and so on.
Tumblr media
The mixer: As opposed to its identify, I do not use the mixer to mix but only to file. Unless of course you invest in a higher-finish electronic desk, it is more intriguing to combine every little thing within the laptop. The mixer is largely used for listening: modify the volume of the microphone in contrast to that of the sound card. This is in which the rookie typically does not know how to go about it. In actuality, the signal arriving from the microphone enter slice should go from a single side to the listening (headphone) and the other facet in recording. In general we use a bus "pre-fader" to immediate the uncooked signal to the card in seem for recording (buss out). I will do a dedicated write-up on this subject. It is crucial to be able to modify the playback slider with out impacting the recording level that goes to the audio card.
Tumblr media
The reverb: In specified musical variations, the reverb is not utilised or used extremely little. Therefore in urban tunes (rap, hip hop), the singer prefers to hear their voice "dry". For other designs of audio, the reverb is frequently important for the singer to feel wings! Sometimes this function is provided in the results of the mixer but it is unusual that the high quality is at the rendezvous. If you've got spoiled yourself by providing your vocal cords a huge-diaphragm condenser microphone, you are going to be disappointed if the reverb can make you really feel like you are singing in the lavatory. To come to feel like in Bercy, the excellent is to have a devoted influence rack. The Alesis Nanoverb and other instances are very great entry-stage. We use a aux or buss "submit-fader" to feed the reverb, then the sound of the result returns both in a stereo slice, or in an "aux-return". We will see all this in a long term report.
Listening change:In the mixing phase, a listening switch is an essential instrument. In fact, mixing is undertaking comparative listening. When you hear to 10, twenty, 50 instances the same title, the ear gets used and we speedily created an unbalanced combine. In addition each and every listening program has a distinct colour. It is for that reason crucial to constantly evaluate your mix to a risk-free source (industrial mix) and to check it on different listenings (huge speakers, little speakers, headphones, radios, and so on.). You will see that your combine will audio differently on each system and the artwork of the combine is to find a satisfactory compromise.
Sky Tronic stereo audio source selector. The listening swap is as a result a key element of the inexpensive songs studio and enables you to change alternately from an A (mix) enter to a B (mp3) enter and change alternately from A (massive speakers) output to a B output. (tiny speakers). Ahead of investing in an high-priced equipment, you can experiment with Sky Tronic "stereo audio supply selector" bins.
Tumblr media
The listening technique: as it has just been stated, it is vital to listen to your combine in a comparative way on distinct speakers. At a bare minimum, it is a pair of screens, a stereo or a radio, and a headset. I listen to all my mixes on a pair of pc speakers at fifteen € to be confident that Internet customers, if not experiencing the sub-bass, will recognize the instruments of the track. It is constantly placing to listen to a medium guitar that all of a sudden will come out very loud on this kind of listening, so a minor equalizer can remedy the difficulty. That is it, you now know the vital elements that make up a affordable songs studio. In an approaching video, I will show how to hook up them concretely.

Paladins Strike tips and tricks: Become a champion in Hi-Rez Studios’ mobile MOBA Smite developer Hi-Rez Studios is branching out into the mobile arena with Paladins Strike — an isometric, MOBA-style take on its popular free-to-play hero shooter Paladins. The PC, PS4, and Xbox One title has gotten a bit of an overhaul on its way to Android devices via the Google Play Store (and iOS devices), but you pick a champion, push payloads, and battle it out with other players online. Editor's Pick 10 best MOBAs for Android MOBAs are a relatively newer gaming genre on mobile. For those who don't know, MOBA stands for Mobile Online Battle Arena. They came from a huge following on PC which includes the likes of League … Much like its mobile MOBA contemporaries — like Vainglory and Heroes Evolved — Paladins Strike is deceptively simple to pick up and play. Look beyond the frantic 5v5 skirmishes, however, and you’ll find a wealth of strategies and stat upgrades that will help you lead your team to glory. Here are some essential tips and tricks for unlocking new champions, getting free Runes, and taking down foes on the battlefield. How to unlock more champions When you think of the top-tier MOBAs like League of Legends, Dota 2, and even Hi-Rez’s own Smite, as well as the most popular hero shooters like Overwatch, the first thing that usually stands out is the eclectic character roster. The Paladins series certainly delivers memorable, quirky champions, each with their own unique designs, weapons, skills, and catchphrases. Although not all 36 heroes have made their way to Paladins Strike just yet (expect to see them in the future), there are 24 to choose from at time of writing, with five — Viktor, Grohk, Cassie, Makoa, and Buck — available from the start. There are several ways to unlock more characters in Paladins Strike. The simplest and easiest way is to simply buy them from the in-game store — accessed via the big yellow basket icon in the bottom-right corner of the main lobby. Hit the champions tab and select the hero you want to purchase. Almost all of the champions can be bought with either tickets or crystals — the latter being the game’s premium currency which can be obtained slowly via in-game rewards or bought in bundles for real-world cash. With the exception of newly added heroes, which will go for 599 crystals or 899 tickets, all purchasable champions cost 299 crystals or 599 tickets. From my experience, this isn’t very muc. You’ll accrue tickets fairly quickly and regular players should earn enough to be able to unlock at least one new champion a week. The two other exceptions are Drogoz and Androxus. The only way to unlock Drogoz at the moment is by making a single purchase of a stack of Crystals. The minimum spend is $2.99, so if you really want to grab the flying damage-dealer then you’ll have to flash the cash. Androxus, on the other hand, currently unlocks as a Starter Sign-in reward after logging on for seven days in total. This is distinct from the Regular Sign-In reward, which goes up to 20 days for consumable rewards. Both of these are accessible via the Sign In tab on the main menu. Hi-Rez may add more champions to the Starter Sign-In and Crystal spend pool, but for now, the only other way to unlock more characters is through a third login bonus hidden away in the final tab in the Store. Here you can draw a single reward once a day, with consumables, skins, and most importantly, champions, all up for grabs. Skye, Barik, and Terminus are all available as login awards at the moment. How Talents and Abilities work Each champion in Paladins Strike has a basic primary fire weapon which can be fired in any direction using two virtual sticks for aiming and firing. Sometimes a well-aimed shot can be enough to fell an opponent, but you’ll need to rely on champion abilities to truly shine. Abilities greatly vary depending on each character’s playstyle and the key to victory is knowing when and where to use them. Each champion has three abilities in total and a fourth ultimate ability which charges slowly over time, or much faster when you’re dishing out damage, getting kills, or healing your allies. Every regular ability will go on a cooldown timer once used, so you won’t be able to spam your strongest moves. Likewise, ultimate abilities are the most powerful tools in each champion’s toolset. You have to wait the longest to use ultimate abilities, so don’t waste them. This won’t be the last time I’ll say this: always, always, always head to Practice Mode and try out each champion and their unique abilities before jumping into a game. I could go through every champion and explain their abilities one by one, but you’ll only really understand how each to play each character through first-hand experience. The same is true of talents, which unlock as you play each match and offer passive buffs that can completely change your selected Champion’s strengths on the fly. As you rack up kills and complete objectives during a game, your champion can grow by up to five levels. With each level up you can select one of two preset Talents, which can increase your movement speed, reduce cooldowns, up your damage, and more. These levels reset after every match, so try out new buff and talent combinations each time you enter the battlefield. What to do with Runes As fun as Paladins Strike is, it doesn’t explain some of its underlying mechanics very well to beginners. This is especially true for Runes, which are barely, but deceptively simple to use. Put simply, Runes upgrade each champion’s base stats. Unlike Talents, which disappear after every game, Rune upgrades last forever and will permanently improve your champions. To upgrade runes you’ll need Rune Cores. These are primarily found in Rune Chests which can be bought in the store a certain number of times per day and unlocked by hitting Daily Quest milestones. Rune Cores come in four varieties: red, green, blue, and universal. The first three are unique to each champion. For example, if you find a red Rune Core, it could be for Terminus, Pip, Kinessa, or any of the other champions, and can only be used to upgrade that specific character. Universal Cores, meanwhile, can be used on any champion, and as such are far more rare and valuable. Once you’ve grabbed a bunch of Rune Cores, head to the Rune tab and you’ll see three Rune tables for each champion. The red and green Rune tables increase damage and max health, respectively, while the third blue table changes depending on the champion. From here, you can pump red Cores into the red Rune table, blue Cores into the blue Rune table, and so on. Universal Cores can be used to upgrade any of the three tables. Once you’ve leveled up each table to a certain rank, you’ll unlock a Super Rune in the center. This becomes stronger as you keep leveling up and offers a massive stat boost each time you reach a higher level. In short, don’t hold onto your Runes! A single percent in health may not sound like much, but it could be the difference between getting killed in a losing fight or escaping with a sliver of health left in the tank. Mastering each game mode There are three 5v5 game modes in Paladins Strike: Siege, Summons, and Deathmatch. Siege is the main competitive mode. Deathmatch is as simple as it sounds — two teams duke it out to the death and the first team to reach 30 kills wins — but Siege and Summons are a little more nuanced. Siege is what is commonly known as an escort or payload map in class-based team shooters like Overwatch, Team Fortress 2, and, of course, Paladins. The mode’s been tweaked a bit in Paladins Strike. In the first stage, both teams attempt to take control of a capture point in the middle of the map. When one team hits 100 percent capture, the point transforms into a payload cart. At this point, the capture winners become the attacking team where the goal is to escort the payload to the opposition’s base. The defending team, meanwhile, has to stop the payload from reaching their base at all costs. If the attacking team reaches the goal, they win. However, if the defending team manages to stall the payload before a timer ends, the game goes back to a king-of-the-hill-style capture match, with the first to hit 100 percent winning the entire match. Summons utilizes the same base-to-base structure, but has more of a MOBA feel with three capture points up for grabs. If a team captures a point, a percent meter at the top of the screen will fill for as long as they hold it, speeding up as they control more points. The goal here is to destroy the enemy base. Each base has a massive health pool, but when a team hits 100 percent they summon a powerful Juggernaut which will stroll towards the enemy base and unleash massive amounts of damage unless taken down quickly. While those are the basics of each mode, there are plenty of tricks to each that help you succeed. Stick close to the payload to keep it moving on attack or stall it on defence. Fall back or hide in the grass to heal instead of rushing in and dying. Keep an eye on which of the three Summons control areas are unchallenged. These are all useful strategies that can make all the difference during a match. Inexperienced players often ignore a few other crucial rules, too. Know your role The champions in Paladins Strike all fall into four categories: Damage, Flank, Support, and Front Line. Damage characters are designed from the ground up to bring the pain, with abilities and Talents built to increase their deadly potential. The Support class, on the other hand, are your healers that offer low damage output, but are crucial to keeping you and your team alive in a fight. Front Line champions are typically tank-like heroes with high health pools and abilities intended to increase survivability. Finally, Flank characters are high-mobility champions, usually with low health and high-risk-high-reward kits. It should go without saying, but don’t rush head-first into a hectic fight as a Support character. Likewise, if you’re not soaking up damage as a Front Line hero, you’re teammates will probably drop like flies around you. As I’ve already mentioned, Practice Mode should be your first port of call before wading into a match with a new character. Playing a sneaky stealth hero like Skye with invisibility shrouds and close-range blasters throws feels wildly different to, say, Barik, who can drop turrets and shields. You won’t know that unless you’ve tested them out first. Your role in each game is defined by your champion’s class. This sounds simple, but you’ll be amazed at how often you see players neglect their individual responsibilities and chase kills to the detriment of the team. Play as a team The ultimate key to success in Paladins Strike is working as a team. This starts from the champion select screen. It may be tempting to pick your favorite champion every game, but you won’t get very far if all five players choose a Flank or Damage hero with no healers or tanks. Lead by example and switch to whichever type of champion your team needs. If your teammates are stubborn, you can always pop a quick message in the chat asking (politely) someone to switch over to another champion for a better team balance. You’ll also need to rely on your team during the match, as you won’t last very long rushing in alone against five enemy players. If you’ve just respawned, stick around and wait for allies before mounting another push. Similarly, if you see a teammate under pressure, try to help them out if you can. Your class should impact your decision-making during play. Even Flank characters, which excel at going alone and disrupting the enemy, still benefit from the rest of the team attacking from another direction or a quick heal from time to time. Like all team-based games, Paladins Strike is also infinitely more fun when playing with friends. If your buddies are into fun competitive games on mobile, give them a nudge! Keep grabbing daily rewards Aside from gradually upping your Siege rank, the long game of Paladins Strike is in getting those juicy rewards. Some players will want to max out their champions with Rune Cores to dominate matches. Others will just want to see their characters in new crazy Skins. Whatever your longterm goal, you’ll find what you need by picking up login bonuses, gaining Achievements, and completing Daily Quests. Daily Quests are quick challenges that reset every day. Each one gives you a small amount of experience and reward points. For every 30 reward points you get (up to a maximum of 150), you’ll unlock a new reward chest which can contain a combination of gold, tickets, and Rune Cores. You should be able to complete all of the necessary Daily Quests in under half an hour, so it’s worth putting the time in to get those rewards. Achievements, meanwhile, will take a lot longer to complete and never reset, but the rewards are much higher. This is especially true of the Collection challenges, which award the player with special character skins for achieving set feats for the corresponding champions. You should complete a fair few of the Achievements just by playing the game, but if there’s a specific skin you want, check the criteria before jumping into a match. Do you have any tips and tricks to share with other Paladins Strike champions? Tell us all about it in the comments! Need A New Desktop Computer? Learn Which Is The Best Bet Here
A desktop computer opens a window to the world at large. It provides the capacity to game, explore the internet, or to tackle word processing. With each of these, it provides a connection to the world. Desktops can have issues though, and sometimes it takes a little knowledge to navigate through the issues. This article will help.
Only buy the best products when building a computer. Some processors will only work with certain motherboards. Additionally, the type of RAM depends on the motherboard. When purchasing your pieces, ensure cross compatibility. This can save you money and time, and possibly even some headaches.
If you want a new desktop computer, look online. The internet has so many different deals and options, you are sure to find a computer that is both in your price range and does all the things you need it to do. The only thing you have to remember is to compare prices from different companies so that you're getting the best deal.
If you like playing games online and wish to buy a desktop computer for a great gaming experience, keep some things in mind. There ought to be a reliable video card, which means a minimum of 4gb. Also, high resolution display is necessary. Special controllers and keyboards are also available that will enhance all your gaming play.
If you favor a certain brand of desktop news, do your research on it and stay current with upcoming releases. The last thing you want to do is buy a new computer from the bran only to have a new release that you want come out not too long after it. Staying current, doing research, and waiting can land you some great deals with certain brands of desktops.
If you want to save money on your desktop computer, look into buying a refurbished model. These computers are ones that have been fixed at the factory and are often offered at a steep discount. These are usually offered by the computer brands on their own websites, so take a look before you buy a new computer.
If you want to extend the life of your potential desktop computer, make sure you choose one that is upgradeable. There are more than a few desktops these days that seal access to the inner workings of the machine. That means no ability to upgrade. Check that you've got access prior to buying.
Be diligent. Many computer manufacturers won't include much documentation and instead send people online. Check out what they have online and make sure that you are comfortable with it. Also be sure you have easy access to downloading software patches, updates and device drivers.
To transfer some large video files, you will need a desktop computer with a DVD optical drive that is writable. CDs tend not to hold much data, therefore they don't work for large files. You'll need the space that a DVD brings to the table. Although these are more expensive, they will save you money on the number you need to purchase.
Don't get caught up in the game of price drops. Some people when they need a new desktop start watching the deals. They never follow through when they are always waiting for that magic deal. There is not much of a discrepancy between the deals that you get.
Deciding between a Mac and a PC can be a hard choice. Note that changing operating systems is a new learning experience and can take a while to master. If you already know one of them well, your best bet is to stick with that system in the future, too.
Find out what kind of support you get with the desktop computer you wish to purchase. You need to know this in case you encounter an issue with your purchase. Find out what their hours are and what days they are closed. You also need to know if they are available by phone, email, chat, etc.
When buying a desktop, make sure that any software that comes with it is legal. It should either include CD and a CD-KEY. Many independent sellers or small companies do not provide you with legal software copies. This is illegal and can cause you to not receive updates or receive a fine.
Just buy the accessories that you need. Don't let a retailer sell you too many unnecessary extras. Make sure you examine what comes with your computer and whether or not they're charging you extra for any of it. It may be cheaper to buy the bare minimum from the retailer and purchase your computer accessories elsewhere.
When you are in the process of buying a desktop, you need to keep in mind that accessories can be quite expensive. Buying them directly from the manufacturer can be quite pricy. It is best to buy the desktop from the manufacturer, but look at discount retailers when it comes to buying all of the extras.
Find new models that include updated and contemporary SSD drives. They're the newest, fastest options on the market, bringing up your operating system in seconds. Just make sure to have a big data drive to back everything up on in case of SSD failure, so you do not lose the whole computer.
Find out how good customer support is for the computer manufacturer from whom you are purchasing your desktop. Go online to research other user's experience with the support representatives. Find out the hours of operation, days of operation and whether or not they close completely on specific days. If your computer manufacturer's support line is closed while you are having problems, you can contact Computer Hope for help.
If you are looking to purchase a desktop but do not have much money, you may want to look at refurbished computers. Usually, there is nothing wrong with these computers; they have been returned to the company and fixed by them. Just be sure you can get a warranty on one, just in case.
If you want to get connected to the world, the best place to start is by getting a desktop computer. Though not as difficult to learn and master as their predecessors, they can still offer a challenge. This article offered some advice for those trying to learn the world of desktop computers.

Aven Colony Guide - Tips for a Prosperous Colony
There’s a fair amount to juggle in Aven Colony, from power distribution, to food supplies, and general colonist morale. If you’re a veteran of city building games then you should be fine, but for those who are new to the genre or a bit rusty in their planning skills, I’ve compiled a few bits of advice.
They may not translate to the very highest difficulty level, but they should serve you well if you’re playing on Normal or thereabouts. This was written at release (25 July 2017), so patches could of course change some of the balance in future.
General Principles
Unlike others of its type, there are no supply lines in Aven Colony. That means you don’t have to worry about putting your food-producing Mill miles away from your Farms; they’ll get the resources just the same.
Building placement is still important in other ways, though. Colonists do not like walking far to work, and they definitely don’t like having to walk through other buildings. Forcing them to do that will cause a big hit to morale. Make sure there are tube routes to every staffed building (a basic grid structure works pretty well) and that there’s at least an Outpost near to any workplace. Definitely worth remembering when you build a distant offshoot for a mine or something. The ‘commute’ overlay will show you where you have any problems.
Only one trouble spot here, nothing too major.
On that note, not all buildings have workers. Many, like the Storage Depots, are automated, so you can shove them far away from colonist habitats with no penalty.
Building efficiency is very important in Aven Colony. Basically, if a building with a workforce is not fully staffed then it won’t be producing things very quickly. If you’ve expanded too quickly, you might end up with only 60% of your jobs being filled. To remedy a workforce shortage as swiftly as possible, make sure the Immigration building is fully staffed (which will bring you 9 new colonists per trip). Do that by clicking on the building, then the briefcase next to the portraits, and bumping it up to the maximum level.
Briefcase icon is pictured in the top right (ish).
If you can afford it, build another Immigration center and set that to high efficiency too. Then scale down again when needed. In general, keep an eye on how fully staffed your buildings are, and give them a boost or a reduction as and when you need production altered in a particular way.
Some buildings have alternative modes or can be boosted in some way (Farms and Greenhouses get a huge boost from using Potash, for example).
Nanite Revenue
Without Nanites, your Aven Colony settlement isn’t going to last very long. You’ll get little boosts from completing missions, and a larger chunk if you find a resource pod laying around for your construction drones to pick up, but you’ll need to be producing your own as soon as possible.
Most of the early missions walk you through this process in issued missions, but basically make sure you get an Iron (or Copper) Mine and Nanite Processing building up pretty rapidly. Laser Mines are faster at extracting materials, but also destroy some in the process. I relied on the slower, but much more dependable regular Mines.
Paying the Iron price for my Nanites, except literally.
Three fully staffed, fully upgraded Mines feeding a couple of level two Nanite buildings will give you a regular cash flow.
If you get absolutely desperate for Nanites, remember that Kelko Spores can be turned into Kelko Sludge with a Chemical Plant, and then used to (slowly) generate some cash.
Food and Water
A level 1 Greenhouse is a little more than twice as expensive as a level 1 Farm (21 Nanites vs 9), but it will produce more food in the warmer periods and keep producing at half rate during winter (versus not producing anything). I haven’t done intense statistical analysis on this, but it seems like at a minimum you should aim for the same number of Greenhouses as Farms. There could even be an argument for just building Greenhouses.
Keep an eye on the food meter; if you’re losing huge amounts of food during the winter period (something like a steady minus 30, or less if you have a small population) then you should up your agricultural output. Some food loss is inevitable since it’s winter, but as long as you’re making it up in the sunnier periods then you’re okay.
That’s five farms and four greenhouses supporting 500-some colonists.
Alien crops are often an option and can ultimately help you increase food variety, but remember that you’ll need to first research recipes in a Tech Center and then produce the foodstuffs in a Mill. The Mill also gives you some options for Earth foods too, like pasta and porridge.
On some Aven Colony maps you won’t have access to any nearby fertile land. In those circumstances, you’ll have to rely on trade as you expand to some greener pastures. Once you’ve built a Trade Hub you’ll be able to use the trade button (bottom left side, with the overlay button and colony options) and bring in some emergency food. Nanites for ration packs is (I think) always there, but you might also be able to export some iron or another mineral. Avoid doing this too much though, since Nanites and iron are critical to your colony as well.
Any excuse to get rid of broccoli.
Water supplies are pretty easy to sort out. Use the Water overlay to find an area that’s pumping a decent amount. Stick down a Water Pump. Put down more when necessary. I barely used the atmospheric converter things, but they’re your fallback option if there are no decent spots for a pump. You can also convert Geothermal Power Stations to Steam mode through their building options to generate water that way in a crisis.
Power
Speaking of power, opt for Geothermal all day every day where you can. It’ll keep on rolling through the winter. Open geothermal springs can erupt with toxic gasses (so you’re avoiding that by building on them). And they’re pretty cost effective (especially at level 2).
Zorium power is great too, but tends to be a later-game construction. Solar panels are (for obvious reasons) very ineffective in winter, so I didn’t find them very useful at all. Wind turbines are okay in an emergency, and their secondary function (setting them to ‘blow’, basically) is helpful for pushing away toxic gasses. Thing is, you shouldn’t have any toxic gasses if you’ve built Geothermal Generators on all the nearby holes.
Note the air filter next door to deal with any emissions.
It’s worth building a battery or two so you can also build at least one Lightning Tower. They’ll give you some back-up power, and protect against the winter storms.
Air Quality
I prefer the Air Filters to Intake Fans. The latter are a risk when Plague Spores start showing up, whereas the former are not. If your air quality starts to dip, use the overlay to pop down some Air Filters close to where air is at its worst. Power Stations and Mines are usually the culprits.
Morale / Referendum
Once you reach a population of 100 in Aven Colony, the people will start participating in direct democracy. Fail to impress them (by getting above 50%), and you’re out. To survive this brutal assault of voting, you need to keep morale up. Generally, if the obvious are taken care of (food, water, power, air quality, housing, a job) then you’ll get reelected.
Keep regular watch on the crime overlay and put down a couple of Police Drone buildings where needed. Colonists seem quite fussy about their law and order.
Officer Dronerson seems hard at work in this sector.
If the people need a little bit more encouragement, it’s time to dip into the Services section. A Bar and Grill near residential areas will help, as will scattering a few Parks around (if you have the cash for it). VR Buildings combined with the ‘Free Gaming’ policy (if you’ve already won enough Referenda to be able to use it) will provide a boost too, but cost a bit more Power from all the Colonists watching VR erotica all day long.
If you’ve been producing exotic alien Enhancers in your Chemical Plant, putting down a Dispensary will allow you to distribute them as you please. Be aware that some of them have long-term health risks though. Speaking of health, a Hospital is an expensive but decent boost to morale too.
In the Colony Control Panel (bottom left), you can bring up a list of individual Colonists and sort them by morale. Then you can click on individuals to find out what the grumpiest ones are so annoyed about. Probably just some minor matter like they have no food or they’re choking to death on low quality air.
Fred’s upset about my generous provision of a long, healthy walk to work.
Threats and How to Deal With Them
Inevitably, your plucky band of Aven Colony colonists will run into threats. These don’t tend to be ‘disasters’ as such, but they can set you back by disrupting things for a bit (which, during a referendum, can be a bit of a problem). Each one has a pretty clear counter strategy.
Lightning Towers. As mentioned above, these will protect your colony from the winter storms and give you some back-up battery juice for good measure. Worth having a couple of these around to cover yourself.
Plasma Cannons. Technically they’ll shoot at things like creep spores and plague spores, but they don’t tend to do a particularly great job there. They seem better at fending off ice shards. I wouldn’t go crazy with these unless you’re being inundated with spore attacks.
Scrubber Drones. A better solution to the creep spores. As long as you’ve got enough to cover your colony (they have limited range, like other drone types) then creep spore attacks shouldn’t be a major worry. Again, you’ll need to step that up if they start appearing in swarms.
You’re in the scrubzone. Oddly, that’s actually a good thing.
Intake Fans. These are actually your enemy. Toxic gas can get in, and so can plague spores. If at all possible just don’t use them and opt for the Air Filters every time (sometimes you get stuck with a fan you can’t remove from the base colony, nothing you can do about that).
Wind Turbines. As noted previously, they can be set to reverse and blow away Toxic Gas. Handy in some situations.
Geothermal Power Plants. Your best defense against Toxic Gas coming from geothermal springs. Put down a power station and harvest that lovely power.
Hospitals with Plague Vaccines. If the plague spores do get in, you’ll need a hospital and a supply of vaccines (manufactured in the Chemical Plant).

From "Linux is a cancer" to Windows Subsystem for Linux.
Since the early 1990s, when Windows became much more popular in the enterprise, people have been trying to put Unix and Linux into places where it doesn’t want to be, using toolkits that implement just enough of the Portable Operating System Interface (POSIX) standard to feel like Unix.
The reasons are pretty simple: a lot of open source tools, especially development tools, are primarily targeted to Unix/Linux platforms. Although the most important ones have been ported to Windows, they are designed to work best when they have access to a Unix/Linux shell scripting environment and the many utilities that come with those platforms.
Today, there are many options availability for getting Unix or Linux functionality on Windows, and the most recent one, the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL), provides a Linux environment that is deeply integrated with Windows. But before I get into that, I’ll look at the some of the other options.
The early days
In the early 1990s, you could get a pretty good Unix shell, compiler, and text utilities on DOS using DJGPP. It was also around this time that you could simply install Linux on a computer if you wanted a pure Unix-like environment. Linux had none of the limitations that a Unix-like subsystem had, but it also meant that you had to convert in total to Linux.
So, if you wanted—or needed—to run a Unix-like environment alongside a Microsoft operating system, you needed a subsystem like DJGPP. And in order to comply with US Federal Information Processing Standards and be considered for defense-related projects, Microsoft needed one, too.
Figure 1. Running GNU bash under DJGPP in a modern DOS emulator (DOSBox).
Windows NT, Microsoft’s first foray into true multitasking and multi-user operating systems, is the basis of their current operating system offerings, whether you’re running it on a phone, computer, or Raspberry Pi. Although it shares superficial traits with Unix and Linux, internally, it is not at all like them, which wasn’t surprising considering when Windows NT was born: in 1993, Unix was something you’d find on a workstation or server. Apple’s Macs were running their venerable System 7, and it would be eight more years before Mac OS X would come out, itself a Unix-based operating system.
The difference between Windows and Unix meant that when you ported a Unix application to Linux, there was substantial functionality, such as the fork() system call, that was simply not available. Because of this, the number of Unix programs that could be fully ported to Windows was fairly small, and many programs had reduced functionality as a result.
Over the years, Microsoft kept Unix and Linux at arm’s length. To comply with those federal standards, it supplied a bare minimum POSIX subsystem, just enough to satisfy the standards. The POSIX subsystem was eventually replaced with something called the Windows Services for Unix, which provided a Unix shell, a compiler, and a lot of command-line tools. But it wasn’t enough.
The age of Linux
It didn’t take long for Linux to define what the Unix-like experience should be on a PC. Full access to networking, a GUI, but also, an enormous library of software available for you to install. Out of the box, an Ubuntu system has more than 50,000 packages available to install. Do you need a simulator for electronic circuits? There are several available. How about a cross-compiler for MIPS, ARM, or PowerPC? There’s that, and more: an incredible number of programming languages, specialized software for ham radio, thousands of tools for manipulating text. Much of what Linux has to offer is enabled by the GNU project, which created the compiler, shell, and the most common utilities you’ll use day-to-day.
So it wasn’t surprising that the go-to Unix environment for Windows would look a lot like Linux. Cygwin, a Unix-like subsystem for Windows, implements enough of the POSIX API that it can include thousands of software packages ported from the Unix and Linux universe. Cygwin provides a shell, all the tools and compilers you’d expect from a Linux system, and implements the Unix (POSIX) system calls through a Windows DLL. If you run a Windows executable from within the Cygwin shell, it will run just like any other Windows program. But if you run an executable that was compiled for Cygwin, it will call into cygwin1.dll to provide the POSIX APIs.
In 2016, two unusual things happened that changed the relationship between Microsoft and the Unix/Linux world.
Windows and Linux, closer than ever
First, Microsoft partnered with Canonical, the makers of Ubuntu, to bring a full Ubuntu subsystem to Windows 10, the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) beta. Its point of entry is the bash shell. After you enable the subsystem, run the bash command from Windows and you’ll be dropped into a bash shell. It doesn’t look all that different from Cygwin or from Linux or Mac OS X, for that matter. The difference is that from the perspective of a program that was compiled to run under x86 Linux, WSL is indistinguishable from Linux. To all intents and purposes, WSL is Ubuntu 16.04 Xenial. There are a few system calls not yet implemented, but that list gets smaller and smaller with each Insider Preview Release of Windows.
Figure 2. Running Firefox under X11 from Bash on Windows.
Second, Microsoft became a Platinum member of the Linux Foundation. Fifteen years ago, Microsoft’s position was that Linux is a cancer. A lot has changed inside Microsoft. A lot has changed in the world outside Microsoft, as well.
Today, Unix and Unix-like are everywhere: Apple’s phones, tablets, and computers are all based on a Unix operating system. Linux has essentially come to define the modern Unix experience, and both Android and the Raspberry Pi operating systems are running a Linux kernel. Why Unix and Linux? First of all, Linux is free, so it’s an easy choice for anyone making a new device (Apple’s choice of Unix is historical; the OPENSTEP operating system, on which macOS is based, was a Unix variant). Second, because so many tools and applications are available (also free) for Linux and Unix, there aren’t as many wheels that need to be reinvented.
Now, Microsoft has a bash shell. Because of the deep integration with Ubuntu, it uses the same package repositories as any other machine running Ubuntu Xenial. Most of the applications in those packages will run just fine on Windows.
Years ago, when Apple chose Unix as its foundation for Mac OS X, we came out with Mac OS X for Unix Geeks, and some 60,000 readers used it to figure out exactly how Apple had rearranged their familiar environment. Over the years, Mac OS X’s Unix became a lot closer to Linux, adopting many of the same core libraries and utilities. And as Mac OS X matured, it’s now the norm for open source software to compile without all sorts of strange workarounds.
It’s a little different for WSL. From day one, WSL is Linux. Sure, there are some differences. For example, WSL doesn’t include an X server. But that’s a small matter of installing any one of the excellent X servers available for Windows, and setting your DISPLAY environment variable appropriately. Getting an X server running with WSL opens up the full Linux experience, so it should be one of the first things you do. I use and recommend the free and open source VcXsrv X Server.
If you’re a Windows user who needs to learn WSL, you can turn to the same resources that have been serving Linux (and Unix) users for years: If you’re completely new to the Unix/Linux shell, our free report “Ten Steps to Linux Survival: Essentials for Navigating the Bash Jungle” will get you on your feet. And when you’re ready for more, our Bash Cookbook includes 15 recipes just on things that are likely to trip up Bash novices, as well as dozens of recipes on sorting, parsing, and automating day-to-day tasks. If you’ve got some familiarity with the Bash shell or Unix/Linux in general, Bash Pocket Reference, 2nd Edition, can help you find what you need when you need it.
As betas go, WSL is incredibly well-baked. If you’re on the Windows insider program, you’ll benefit from frequent updates to WSL, and you can monitor progress on their GitHub issue tracker, which is full of feature requests, discussions, and the hopes and dreams of everyone who wants a little bit of Linux in their Windows. The high water mark I’m waiting for is if Docker will run natively on WSL. That would present an attractive alternative to the Docker on Windows solutions that depend on Hyper-V or VirtualBox and would be a huge step forward in resource utilization. Here’s to hoping we get there in 2017.
