By the time the anthem plays its final strains, all twenty-four of us stand in one unbroken line in what must be the first public show of unity among the districts since the Dark Days.
Young man, I was young once too
Sang a song of love like you
Son, I too was left behind
Turned on one too many times
The line between naivety
And hopefulness is almost invisible
So close your heart, the world is dark
And ruthlessness is mercy
If I had a nickel for every time an elder son of Kronos mocked the naivety of a mortal hero whose name started with O and ended with eus in a musical adaptation, I'd have two coins to pay Charon to let me across the River Styx.
It’s to Chant II in hadestown! (It’s basically just the Gavin and Alastair fight scene before the alliance but with some things changed to fit the song(^ω^))
ITS REALLY BAD BUT IT WAS SOMETHING THAT I WANTED TO MAKE AFTER LISTENING TO THE SONG A LOT! (DONT MAKE FUN OF IT OR ILL CRY(‘A`))
So I’ve seen that a lot of people like the off broadway version of epic iii more, and I totally agree. /but even that hardest of hearts/ is one of my favourite lines in the whole musical
But i think the change that I personally dislike the most is taking out Persephone’s monologue in Chant ii. Like cmon the parallels
I’ll be existing and all of a sudden “he said he’d. Shelter us, he said he’d. Harbor me” pops into my head. First of all, that verse has no right to be that catchy, and second, they had no right to cut that from the song in the rewrite
Five Tracy Chapman’s All That You Have Is Your Soul / Hadestown parallels, or the “ATYHIYS and Persephone’s part of Chant II are the same song” thesis:
1.
ATYHIYS:
Oh my mama told me
[...]
She say don't give or sell your soul away
[...]
Hunger only for a taste of justice
Hunger only for a world of truth
Cloud Machine (see Working on a Song p. 256):
Mother, what have I done?
Squandered the gift that you gave me
+
Way Down Hadestown:
A lie for a lie!
And your soul for sale
+
If It’s True:
And it isn't for the few
To tell the many what is true
2.
ATYHIYS:
Well I was a pretty young girl once
I had dreams I had high hopes
I married a man he stole my heart away
He gave his love but what a high price I paid
All that you have is your soul
So don't be tempted by the shiny apple
Don't you eat of a bitter fruit
Hunger only for a taste of justice
Hunger only for a world of truth
'Cause all that you have is your soul
Why was I such a young fool
Thought I'd make history
Making babies was the best I could do
Thought I'd made something that could be mine forever
Found out the hard way one can't possess another
Chant II:
When I was a young girl like you
Sister, I was hungry too
Hungry for the underworld
When I was a young girl
Now you know how it tastes
The fruit of Mr. Hades’ ways
Sister, it’s a bitter wine--
Spit it out while you still have time
Take it from a woman of my age
Love is not a gilded cage
All the wealth within these walls
Will never buy the thing called love
+
Way Down Hadestown II:
Oh, it was a mistake alright!
And now you gotta pay
And pay
And pay for it, for the rest of your life!
3.
ATYHIYS:
I thought, thought that I could find a way
To beat the system
To make a deal and have no debts to pay
I'd take it all, I'd take it all, I'd run away
Me for myself first class and first rate
But all that you have is your soul
Way Down Hadestown:
And your soul for sale
Sold!
To the king on the chromium throne
[...]
Mr. Hades is a mighty king
Must be making some mighty big deals
Seems like he owns everything
Kind of makes you wonder how it feels
+
Way Down Hadestown (Reprise):
The deal is signed?
Yes
[...]
I did what I had to do
That's what they did too
+
Any Way The Wind Blows:
Eurydice was a hungry young girl
A runaway from everywhere she'd ever been
[...]
In the end, you’re better off alone
4.
ATYHIYS:
Here I am, I'm waiting for a better day
A second chance
A little luck to come my way
A hope to dream, a hope that I can sleep again
And wake in the world with a clear conscience and clean hands
[...]
She say don't give or sell your soul away
'Cause all that you have is your soul
Road to Hell (Reprise):
It's a sad song
But we sing it anyway
'Cause here’s the thing
To know how it ends
And still begin to sing it again
As if it might turn out this time
+
Flowers:
Dreams are sweet until they’re not
[...]
Nothing, nothing gonna wake me now
Flowers
I remember fields
Of flowers
Soft beneath my heels
Walking in the sun
I remember someone
Someone by my side
Turned his face to mine
+
Livin’ Up On Top (NYTW):
Why would he trade the sunshine for a couple of nickels and dimes?
[...]
Give me the sky that you can’t buy
Or sell at any price
And I’ll give you a song for free
‘Cause that’s how life oughta be!
[...]
Let the world we dream about be the one we live in now!
I’m back on my bullshit but lemme just say that the girl on the left is FAR MORE GORGEOUS than the girl on the right and I know I’m right. They never should have changed her she was perfect the way she was.
Hadestown. HADESTOWN. WHY did you incorporate West End lyrics into Broadway. not the good ones from If It's True, but the ones from Epic III, which actively make the song worse. why did you not include the good changes and only included the bad ones. WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM HADESTOWN
