CURRENTLY READING :
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So it’s my day off and I’m chilling out as I usually do me and my baby laying in the bed my baby I mean Doggo and I’m just getting into the salt eaters. I’ve always wanted to really jump into Toni Cade Bambara’s work but I couldn’t find my footing. I realize now that it was because when I had attempted to read the book before it wasn’t making sense to me I went on Goodreads just to check out what some folks were saying about it and they agree that it was hard to navigate.
However, now I realize that I needed to read some other things to become more informed and those books lent clarity to this one. I wrote a couple notes in my favourite reading tracker app about what I was experiencing after I read chapter 1 and I actually wanna go back and start all over again because it was just so next level by the end of the time that I got to chapter 1 I was like holy shit. I might start all over. Anyway, just wanted to share.

Crossover post — yo so I bought the 33 1/3 book on Janet Jackson’s The Velvet Rope and it’s so good and exciting.
The footnotes are filled with old interviews of Janet Jackson being amazing, sweet, powerful and defiant.
This was a great interview that was cited. I’m just so blown away by how dope she is.. I’m going all the way.. I haven’t given into Janet as much as I’ve wanted to, I’m making up for it more now. She’s so strong. All that she’s been through as a woman & as a girl.

Swiftgron Shows Up, Liz Spirals (March 2012 - September 2012)
This is not going to be a timeline of Swiftgron and their relationship. For that, you can go to the @swiftgronmasterpost. This is just to show how, when things got serious with Dianna, things deteriorated between Taylor and Liz:
25 March 2012 - Swiftgron go watch the Hunger Games together. Taylor follows Dianna on Twitter afterwards. This is likely their first actual date:
Tumblr media
27 March 2012 - Liz tweets this:
Tumblr media
Was this in response to Swifgron’s first date? Maybe. Was Liz jealous Taylor had pulled the exact same move on Dianna that she’d pulled on her back in 2009 when she took her to Valentine’s Day? Also maybe. But also maybe not. Still, #Lizgototherapychallenge.
30 March 2012 - Taylor introduces Dianna to her mom, they all get dinner together:
Tumblr media
12 April 2012 - Dianna blows a kiss to Taylor on Jimmy Kimmel.
18 April 2012 - Mutual friend Chantelle tweets that she spent the night and early morning hanging out with TayLiz.
Tumblr media
Chantelle will post a picture of her, Taylor and Liz hanging out in a kitchen together almost a year later -- when the girls don’t seem to be on speaking terms -- making me think this picture was taken on this night:
Tumblr media
24 April 2012 - Swiftgron Shirley MacLane party happens:
Tumblr media
27 April 2012 - Taylor and someone (possibly Liz) are papped getting lunch together in LA. The secret message for the song “The Last Time,” which will be written in a few months, is “LA On Your Break.” They’re certainly in LA, and the tour is certainly on break. Perhaps this is Taylor finally ending things with Liz.
Tumblr media
Liz tweets at Taylor about Skittles later that day, making me think it was her at lunch.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
28 April 2012 - Dianna’s birthday party. Taylor dresses as a tiger and leaves a note on the door with a joke they’d made that reads “I’m a little kitten and I need to nurse because I’m a runt and I’m likely to fall victim to predators.”
Tumblr media
10 May 2012 - Taylor posts on Instagram “Going back to Nashville. Thinking about the whole thing. Guess you gotta run sometimes.”
Tumblr media
This is from the song Nashville by David Mead. Other interesting lyrics include:
You’re a distant memory, you’re an exit sign I was talking crazy on the driver’s side
I was talking crazy on the driver’s side I will always love you like a long goodbye
The driving references are interesting, considering that Red has the theme of driving all over it. “I will always love you like a long goodbye” also seems to support the theory that Taylor has just finally broken things off with Liz.
15 May 2012 - Taylor finishes writing Everything Has Changed with Ed Sheeran then gets dinner with Dianna Ashley and Claire. The original lyrics of Everything Has Changed talk about “falling for a Gemini,” which describes Gemini Liz, but Taylor seems to have re-fitted the song to be about Dianna and removed those lyrics:
Tumblr media
27 May 2012 - Liz’s birthday. Taylor does not tweet at her. No pictures are posted of the party, if there is one.
28 May 2012 - Taylor and Ed record Everything Has Changed:
Tumblr media
Late May 2012 - Taylor writes The Last Time:
Tumblr media
Here’s what she had to say about the inspiration for the song:
Tumblr media
The Last Time is a hard song for me to analyze, not because I don’t have theories about what it means, but because I think Taylor is oversimplifying the story here. To me, looking at this song, assuming it’s about Liz, it reads less like a pleading “baby I want you back” song, and more like an “I’m losing you to addiction song.”
We haven’t fully gotten into this yet, but Liz was dealing with a lot of mental and internal shit at this time. According to rumor, she’s about to be let go from The Agency due to getting “out of control,” and the songs she writes this summer, including Wreck of Who I Am, definitely seem to imply she was trying to claw her way out of a spiral here. When I listen to The Last Time through this lens, it feels more like a last chance, pleading intervention.
Wreck of Who I Am:
And the tide is strong that it keeps me from the land
And I’m low on faith and I pray with shaky hands
Well it hurts like hell tryna tell myself
This ain’t the only thing that’s meant for me
Gotta piece back together the wreck of who I am
The Last Time
This is the last time I’m asking you this
Put my name at the top of your list
This is the last time I’m asking you why
You break my heart in the blink of an eye
And there’s also the fact that The Last Time seems like it was written on if not around Liz’s birthday (May 27).
3 June 2012 - Dianna jokes at the GLAAD Awards about having kissed girls before:
Tumblr media
4 June 2012 - Liz does some songwriting of her own with Seth Jones and Megan Mace:
Tumblr media
Taylor and Liz’s dresses from Mean are placed next to each other at the Speak Now Tour Exhibition:
Tumblr media
10 June 2012 -  Taylor diaries about recording 22, and IKYWT, says she’s already written WANEGBT:
Tumblr media
Story behind WANEGBT: I wrote it with Max Martin and Johan Shellback who are two of my songwriting heroes, they’re amazing. And we were in the studio, and we were writing a different song and this guy walks in who I- was- A friend of someone I had previously… dated. And he comes in and he’s like “Oh, I hear you and [redacted] are getting back together” and um that was like his opening line. And we weren’t. We’d done that whole like on/off on/off just the worst. Bleh. And um… And so when he left I just turned to Max and I was like “We are never getting back together. What? That’s ridiculous!” Um and I told them the whole situation as I do ‘cause I tend to share, as you know. And so uh he just looked at me and he was like “I know the song we’re writing today. Let’s start a new one.” And so I got the guitar and it just sort of happened and so uh this is that song.
So what we know from this is that it is HIGHLY more likely that a friend of Liz just happened to walk into the studio that day than a friend of either Jake or Dianna (I’m guessing someone from The Agency maybe? Taylor seems to fumble when choosing how to describe them)
Martin and Shellback are credited on three songs on red -- WANEGBT, IKYWT, and 22. We know Taylor wrote 22 here. She also says she “came back to trouble.” From that I can assume they were trying to write IKYWT when this story took place.
The secret message for WANEGBT is “When I stopped caring what you thought.” To me, this really signals things have broken down between them. Rather than the pleading in The Last Time, this is song is much more distant and moved on, where Taylor is able to have a sense of humor about the breakup.
18 June 2012 - A friend of Liz’s tweets this at Taylor (am I the only one sensing some shade??):
Tumblr media
1 July 2012 - Liz does some songwriting in Nashville:
Tumblr media
Between this session and the session on the fourth, presumably the songs she’d release later that winter (One Hand On the Wheel, Wreck of Who I Am, and Blessed Are the Brokenhearted) are written here, making it seem like Liz is processing both some depression and a breakup of some sort.
8 July 2012 - Taylor takes pictures with a fan at a coffee shop (presumably in Nashville). According to the fan’s account, Liz was also there, sitting at the table behind them. The fan ends up taking pictures with both Liz and Taylor:
Tumblr media
I’m not entirely sure what this means for them. Obviously Taylor has just written The Last Time (presumably about Liz) and then gone off to Hy(i)annis port with Dianna to go frolic in the waves and all that, so I don’t think this means TayLiz is back on. However, we know from fan accounts (which I’ll get to in a second) that Liz thought she was going to be coming on the Red Tour until she was let go from The Agency in September. Perhaps this is some amount of reconciliation? A check in? An ultimatum to get her act together or she won’t be allowed on tour?
Truthfully, we can’t know for sure. But this is one of their last hang outs together (that we know of) this year.
13 August 2012 - Taylor’s Red Youtube Webchat. She describes what some of the songs on the album are about
22: This is a song that I wrote with Max Martin and Johan Shellback and it’s a song about the way I spent my summer when I was finishing this album. Kind of hanging out with my friends all the time and I really decided that I love being twenty two. It’s um kind of my favorite age that I’ve ever been. I kind of have like different theories of the years in my life and like what they meant and 22 has been so much fun. It’s- it’s been so much fun and I decided to write a song about that and just all the ridiculous nonsense that my friends and I got into. And, um, so this one’s called 22.
Treacherous: This is a song that I wrote with Dan Wilson… I’ve always wanted to work with him. So I called him and um it turned out that he was into the idea of working with me. And um so I went in with this idea and uh we wrote a song about when you’re falling for someone and you know that it’s dangerous. And you know that it could really really really really really just annihilate you if it were to not work out and it could possibly not work out and it probably won’t work out, but you go for it anyway. And so this is called Treacherous.
31 August 2012 - We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together is released as a single. The MV features the rest of the Agency, but not Liz. Fans take notice.
13 September 2012 - The news breaks that Liz is leaving The Agency and will not be on the Red Tour:
Tumblr media
Interestingly enough, according to the L Chat, Liz had been telling fans that she was planning on going on the Red Tour before this point, so something must’ve happened:
Tumblr media
And because of this fan encounter below, we have somewhat of an idea of what it was:
Tumblr media
So from the combined events of this summer we know this about Liz being let go:
1) Liz wrote songs that summer about having a hard time and trying to claw her way out of it.
2) Taylor and Liz met up twice that summer, and Taylor did not acknowledge Liz’s birthday publicly.
3) Taylor may have written The Last Time, a song about begging someone to choose you over other things (possibly addiction) on Liz’s birthday.
4) Liz thought she was going on The Red Tour.
5) Liz was fired for “getting out of control.”
The picture this paints to me is that, while Liz was spiraling, Taylor was trying to help her, using coming on the Red Tour as a reward for getting her act together. When she ultimately couldn’t, presumably after that meeting in July, Taylor had no choice but to ask her to leave the Agency, since hardcore intense tour life is likely the last thing Liz needed to get better. This is a really difficult and hard situation, regardless of whether or not the two women were ever sexually or romantically involved.
Fortunately, as we’ll see moving forward, this seems to be the wake up call Liz needed to start the process of getting back on her feet. However, it’s clear that for at least a little bit after this, Taylor became a taboo topic around Liz. But ask anyone who’s dealt with addiction or helped a friend/family member through it -- there’s some resentment that’s bound to happen, even towards the people trying to help.
20 September 2012 - Liz spends “quality time” with Claire and Taylor:
Tumblr media
I personally read this as one last hurrah of the trio after Liz was not asked back for the Red Tour. The “not mad at this day” feels a little weird to me too, and I can’t tell if it’s supposed to be shade or not. Either way, this is the last major interaction between Taylor and Liz for a while.
IN CONCLUSION: Liz had her demons. Whether this is what caused the end of her and Taylor’s relationship or something else, it’s almost certainly what caused her to not be asked back on the Red Tour. In the winter, she would release the music she was writing over the summer, making it clear she was going through some shit, probably not helped by seeing Taylor so obviously move on with Dianna. But this is the low point. Things with Liz can only go up from here.

"We've Got Him!"
Monday 16th March 2020
Good evening folks! How are we all doing? How was your weekend? It's a brand new week and once again I have some #SPOILER news for you! I'm sure the majority of you have already heard by now, but EastEnders have revealed that Mick and Linda will be leaving ...... (Hold your breath! Not the soap!) .... the Queen Vic! Yes, it has been made known that Mick will be selling the Vic in an attempt to help support his wife overcoming her alcoholism. We know Linda is on the road to recovery, but obviously Mick feels living under in the legendary pub is only going to be harrowing reminder for Linda, best case scenario, get her away from temptation as soon as possible! So the question that will be on viewers lips will obviously be ... Who will be the new Landlord and Lady of the Queen Vic?! Now I've been thinking about this ... I know a few names have been thrown into the hat, but my thought strategy was ... Sharon?! Think about it ... She's currently homeless right now, she's been thrown out of the Mitchell house hold, after the revelation of Keanu being her baby father, she's currently living with Ian and Kathy as they have very kindly put her up until she's back on her feet, we know she's currently grieving for the death of her son, and she's due to make a heartbreaking decision ... what if it she gives up her new born son, then decides to make a new start for herself and return to the one place she felt safe, the place she spent her childhood, the place she used to call "Home" .... The Queen Vic! Plus of course Linda is best friend's with Sharon, she will trust her to make sure The Vic stays a running success! Who else could possibly come close?! To me, it seems like a no brainer, but then again ... I could be completely wrong! .... Who do you guys think should/could be the new Landlords of the Queen Vic?! I'd really love to hear your take this one!
Also, new pictures have been released of Phil's return, viewers will know that the last time we saw Phil, he was a passenger on a rescue boat, during the boat crash, and he watched from a far as young Dennis was pronounced dead. New pictures reveal that he will return to the Square on the day of Dennis's funeral wanting to speak to Sharon. Where has he been? And what has he got to say to her?!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In other news, Shelley makes an appearance at The Vic, on the looks of things to cause a bit of trouble. Fans will know that Linda attempted to befriend Shelley outside the school gates of Ollie's school, but it soon turned sour as Shelley looked down on Linda! Will Linda now take a charge and stand up to Shelley?! Do you feel for Linda or do you think she kinda brought it on herself after the way she acted, due to her alcohol addiction?! I'd love to hear what you guys think!
Tumblr media
Now, tonight's episode ... ooooh so much to focus on, it seems a few of characters are struggling to move forward, to name mainly, Sharon and Keegan! Okay, so, let's start with Keegan ... I am feeling a little sorry for his character right now, I get he feels like people look at him in completely the wrong way due to the colour of his skin. He gets treated differently by the police, receptions and now solicitors. Is he ever going to get the loan he desperately needs to get his business off the ground? I'm starting to feel sorry for Tiffany too, as she's having to try and console Keegan as much as possible, and support him in the best way she can, being the doting wife, but for Keegan, it just isn't enough. He seems to think that Tiffany just doesn't understand, but I think she really is trying to. The conversation Keegan had with Denise, I found it very sweet. We haven't seen these two characters come together this way and share a very meaningful conversation. Denise clearly understands Keegan's frustration, I think it was nice for him to have someone there who actually gets it! With Denise being the same colour as Keegan, she's experienced exactly what he is currently going through and can shed some light on it for him I guess. I, personally, never released that (some) coloured people still suffer racial abuse, it's the 21st century, we should be well and truly passed this! I hope Keegan will try and move forward and eventually get some luck, he's been through a tough time and deserves to make something of his life!
Oh, so Ben is going to go ahead with the operation?! Let's hope to god it brings back his hearing, or at least helps to some extent. I don't believe he'll fully recover but I do believe he'll able to communicate a little better even if his hearing ability increases by just the smallest amount. I still think EastEnders are portraying this story-line brilliantly, still showing Ben hearing muffled sounds, it really puts it into perspective. Oh no! Danny's back! What could he want?! He knows what happened at the boat crash and he knows Phil is currently away ... what on earth could he be back on the square for?! I really hope Ben doesn't make a huge mistake and get involved in some dodgey deals because he basically couldn't understand what Danny was saying!! I think Danny obviously knew Ben had lost his hearing, otherwise he would never have shown his face, I think he's taking advantage here, Phil isn't around and Ben is vulnerable ... kinda makes the Mitchell clan look weak, and we all know that the Mitchell family has a history of hold up a reputation. I can see it now, Ben being dragged into a dodgey deal he can't get out of, Phil comes back while everything is going on and there'll be nothing he can do to help but try and get revenge on Danny .... what do you guys think could be in store for the Mitchell's now? And what do you think Danny could be back for?!
I just want to put it out there .... Max and Isaac?! Who thought of those two becoming pals?! I feel sorry for Patrick, the more we see of Isaac, it seems the more disappointed Patrick is of him. Would it make much difference if he knew he was his Dad? I'm not so sure, I think we'll see more anger coming from Isaac. Although, it was a really sweet gesture from Patrick to celebrate the life of Isaac's "Dad". Maybe this could be the turning point? Could Isaac now warm to Patrick? Guess we'll have to wait and see!
Awwww man, I just want to hug Sharon. She looks so run down and depressed and as if she's had no sleep at all! She looks a white as a sheet! I know I've said it before and yes, i'm going to say it again! She just doesn't want her new born son does she?! She had to be forced to go and register him, she asked Linda to bathe him for her and she got so upset over a twisted wheel on the pram. I get she's grieving, but Linda is right ... Kayden also needs his Mum! I can't see her carrying on to be honest, I still believe that she's going to give up her newborn, what else could her heartbreaking decision be? She's just too soaked up in grief, she can barely interact with anyone. I was beginning to wonder whether EastEnders will show Dennis's funeral, I mean it would be cruel not to I think, in the circumstances the character passed away. It would only be right to give Dennis a good send off, right? Or maybe it should be very quiet and very personal, what do you guys think? Can Sharon ever move on from this agonising grief?
Okay, time to focus on Chantelle and Gray. Did anyone else see the bruises on Chantelle's ribs left behind after the beating from Gray? I noticed that she was ignoring every word Gray was saying to her while she was doing the washing, Gray was doing all the talking and she didn't respond to a word he said, and yes, I hope that made Gray feel guilty, as he knew he'd done wrong! Poor Chantelle could barely move around the kitchen, I did fear that he was going to lose his temper with her again because she was ignoring him, but it seemed to do the trick, he clearly felt more and more guilty. The way she flinched as well before she left to go to her second job, she's visibly shaken and scared of him. But things could be looking up .... I was literally talking to the TV when Gray was in Whitney's bedroom "Look up! Look up!" and then when he saw it "Yes! Yes, Gray!" ... HE KNOWS LEO WAS IN THEIR ATTIC!!!!! Finally the break-through, literally, everyone has been waiting for! Gray can start to build a case and prove that Leo was stalking Whitney, Whitney will get to have her say in court and hopefully if they have enough evidence, Whitney will be free and Gray will be back at work! ..... Of course that may be false hope, this is EastEnders we're talking about, it is just a start anyway, I'm sure Gray has a long way to go to prove Leo was in Whitney's attic and also stalking her ... I've always said they need to find Whitney's diary ... what ever happened to that? Maybe it's long gone but even so, there still could be a twist and it still could be found?! Who knows? But hopefully, if things go well, Whitney will eventually get out of prison and Gray will be back at work, which may even stop him feeling completely under pressure and stop lashing out at Chantelle. This is of course wishful thinking, I have no idea what's going to happen next but, I feel, it's all looking positive! What do you guys think? Will Gray be able to save Whitney? How long will it be until the Taylor's find out about Chantelle's abuse?! Please leave me any theories or thoughts you may have to any of the current story-lines happening right now, I'd love to hear your input!
Thank you guys for your on-going support! I hope you guys enjoy reading my blog as much as I enjoy writing it! I'll be back again tomorrow for another blog, looking forward to seeing what happens next! Goodnight ya'll! xXx

Title: Portrait of Chantelle Keshaye Pahtayken & Shay Pahtayken, Plains Cree
Artist: Ryan RedCorn
I chose this picture because it caused me to think about the book we read The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian by Sherman Alexie. In this picture it shows a picture of an Indigenous woman and her daughter that takes up a large amount of wall space. In the description next to the picture, it talks about capturing "the emblematic love and strength between a mother and daughter - a form of familial love and expression of value that can be recognized by all peoples regardless of language or cultural background." I think this is a great depiction of how it should be in our society. For so long, Native Americans have been pushed out to the outskirts and put in solitary, or reserves, to be hidden from "American Society". This picture and the quote I used really humanizes Native Americans to show that they too can have familial love just like everyone else. Unfortunately, especially in the book we read, people see Native American people (i.e. Junior) as savages but it isn't until you really get to know them and watch them that they have a great sense of community and love for each other, a bond that not many people in "American Society" can even relate to.
Question: Does this picture represent progress in our view of Native Americans in a humanistic way? Does this picture need to be displayed or should it have to be displayed for us to appreciate them, or will American society ever appreciate them?

Hello there! My name is Chantel, I’m 18 and I’m a mean, lean, meme loving machine.
I’ve posted on here before, but unfortunately the mail that is sent my way is sometimes lost or some haven’t been able to respond (Which I completely understand, sometimes things just happen, no judgement.) What I’m looking for is mainly someone I can send Snail Mail to; I’m open to internet friends but I’ll be honest, I suck at replying straight away, especially If the conversation goes dry. I’m not bothered about age or gender or where you’re from, as long as you’re chill and we can get along.
If you’re the type of person who loves to talk about anything and everything, then feel free to hit me up! I want to know what your favourite colour is, whether you think pluto is a planet, what you’re favourite conspiracy theory is and much more. I want to be able to discuss with someone about their interests as well as mine, whether their similar or completely different. I want to know your deepest secrets so I can store them away and sell them to the government, but we’ll save that particular one for another day.
I’m pretty average; I like to take crappy photos and pretend that I keep art journals when really I just buy books that I never end up using. I use to paint, draw and basically do anything arty when I was younger, but I don’t have as much time now (so if you’re good at art, show me and I’ll gush about it to you.) I’ve only been abroad once to Spain, and it was absolutely amazing! I’m also a fan of gaming on the PS3 and PS4, and recently finshed Dishonoured, Oxenfree and Life is strange.
I love to pretend that I write, as I often get a tiny idea, write a page then hit a block. But hey, if we were all meant to be authors, there wouldn’t be much point to it now would it?
I’m a lover of books, and a hater of reading. Sometimes finishing a book can be difficult for me, but I still do it nonetheless. My favourites are We Were Liars, A Monster Calls, and The Raven Cycle. (Please please message me if you enjoy the last one, even if you don’t want to be pen pals!)
TV and Films are definitely a conversation starter if you’re wondering how to start a conversation (I’m currently studying media and hoping to specialise in film.) I love a lot of programmes including; Orphan Black, The Office, Teen Wolf, BoJack Horseman, Gilmore Girls, The Blue Exorcist, Red Vs Blue, My Mad Fat Diary, Yuri!!! On Ice and Pretty Little Liars. For Films, I enjoy stuff like A Clockwork Orange, Kingsman Secret Service, Hacksaw Ridge, Dredd the remake, Kill Bill and basically anything by Laika. (Paranorman, Coraline, The Box Trolls, Fantastic Mr Fox.)

A Man's Gotta Do (2004)
A Man's Gotta Do (2004)
Eddy does what he has to do to give his family what they want. For the last 25 years, he has secretly moonlighted as a "standover" man, purely to provide his aspirational wife with her dream house and a privileged upbringing for his only daughter. Eddy finds it hard to express how he feels, especially now that his "little girl" is engaged and will soon be leaving the family home. Chantelle believes her emotionally blocked father has only two feelings "angry" and "very angry" and feels her father just doesn't understand her. Eddy is perplexed: "What's to understand?" Herein lies the problem. Over eager to get on the same wavelength as his daughter and recapture the closeness they once had, Eddy starts reading Chantelle's diary. In the process, more secrets than anyone was prepared for, begin to surface with devastating yet hilarious results. Eddy rides the storm and once the dust settles, all is well... for now.
Try eight more:
The Door Remains Open (1959)
Bamse and the Witch's Daughter (2016)
1735 Km (2005)
Fallout (2013)
They Took Them Alive (2016)

Checking In
Hey - it’s been a minute. Life has been busy as hell.
At the inspiration of a friend… I bought myself a new kindle, and I’m seeing that it’s the wave rn.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s interesting interfacing with new tech because I’m such a staunch iPhone/mobile/app-reader that I’ve conditioned myself to read in a certain way, with a certain layout, at a certain brightness and at a certain speed on my device. All of that, with this kindle, and more has been upended.
I’m having fun with the kindle and feel like I may reduce the amount of books in my home which frees up counter and shelf space.
Anyway, how’s things?
I’m currently realizing that I’m not going to make my GR book self-challenge this year and honestly, I’m good with that. Life is life-ing and time ain’t what it used to be - even I always try to grasp my free time with both hands. ALSO, we still have like 5 months of the year so I’m hopeful things will always improve, but I’m also alright if it stays right where it is!
Currently reading:
Big Machine by Victor LaValle on the Kindle — it’s dope. I started reading this book A LONG TIME AGO but then in typical cnx fashion, I forgot about it. I started it over and am remembering why I enjoyed it the first time around. I love LaValle’s writing style. No, I haven’t read The Changeling.. but Lone Women was great.
Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett - still! I’m picking away at it and nope I won’t let it go. I love the story so far. It’s calming to read even tho there’s so much DRAMA in Kingsbridge Priory.
The Same River Twice by Alice Walker — this is a niche work. I love niche works because it allows super fans to dig deep. It’s the equivalent of a rare find when crate digging and I’m so glad that my mind told me: Chantel, buy this book when I was in a BMV in Downtown Toronto. Best $7 bucks I ever spent so far and learning about the process of creation, the emotional turmoil and the fight to right oneself after being dragged for absolutely no reason. I’m feeling all the feelings with mother Alice Walker and I’m feeling like Salamishah Tillet right now.
Anyway, you know I’m always reading a whole lot more.. checking out some magazines and newspapers and AVSI’s. Blog visitors might see some random posts that are literally just interesting tidbits, as usual, from the daily reading. I just felt like I haven’t touched base in a minute. So I wanted to wake this shit up! 👋🏽🙋🏾‍♀️😊

I ride on Drake so much. It’s because he just annoys me, like his whole style, flow, everything. Like — I don’t know. He just annoys the fuck outta me. He’s like the hip hop Nickelback to me.
Tumblr media
The trick about Nickelback is that it’s not that they’re not good.
I know you probably just rolled your eyes and are questioning my whole judgment - okay, that’s fair... but follow me down the rabbit hole for awhile.
Chad Kroger has a unique voice, he’s got a quintessentially Canadian rock voice. Vocally, you could pick him out of a lineup anywhere. Nickelback and their catalogue chronicle a particular rural part of Canadian rock that is identifiable internationally. Same thing with, Shania Twain. Celine Dion.
Tumblr media
They aren’t bad artists. Their music speaks to a specific part of CanCon that we as Canadians are oversaturated with, which I believe is why we hate them and ride on them. It’s their absolute status as power players in Canadian music that makes them so annoying. Drake is no different. He is a cornerstone of modern Canadian rap/hip hop. Our current most identifiable Canadian rap artist. He put on for a generation of Canadian rappers after him. Made a lot of old Canadian rappers mad. Industry hazard I guess.
Tumblr media
Okay, backtracking because this is sounding like a love letter and my intention is not that at all. It’s just that.. today, I listened to If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late and I realized that this is actually my favourite Drake record, ahem Mixtape. Whatever.
Tumblr media
It’s my favourite because I think IYRTITL, for being released in 2015, captured a distinct Toronto vibe and an experience that makes up what we, the Toronto youth, consider to be Toronto slang and Toronto culture. It captures the hustle and success we strive for. It incorporates our Blackness and the Caribbean dialect that Toronto culture is steeped in. Drake's stature in 2015 (and right now) gave us Toronto kids some shit to claim on the world hip-hop stage. He’s our Jay-Z. Is that a wild claim? Maybe. Tell me what you think. Okay, I really don’t feel comfortable saying he’s our Jay-Z, fuck — who can I say?!? I can’t think of anyone else that he’s the equivalent to over there. That’s also a point of pride.
Tumblr media
I love this record. Drake’s annoying. This was a braggadocio special, but I like it. It gets me hot. Energy is a fave off this. Energy is MY SONG on this record. Madonna is another one.
https://song.link/https://music.apple.com/ca/album/1440839718?i=966997501
I remember when Madonna kissed Drake in the mouth lmaooo - a fucking moment!
** update a few days later: Joe Budden Podcast talking about why folks hate Drake, but that he’s actually a great artist, but a terrible cook **

My heart! My heart!
I finally finished this wonderful book today after attempting to read it for very long time.
I struggled through reading this book because they were just some moments as a person with experience dealing with those who suffer from addiction and anxiety and as someone who lost my best friend in a similar fashion, a talented black man and chef, who died of an accidental overdose, it just hurts my heart to connect all these dots. This book made me feel things deeply when reading. I just felt so overwhelmed at points with sadness because he was doing such great things and trying to heal not just himself but also his community through active representation, connection and presence. It hurts and it’s sad, and so much was lost when Michael K Williams passed. It’s just heartbreaking he is a really great representation of the quiet struggles that many people go through internally and externally.
Him speaking about the women who have helped him in his life from his friend Robyn to Queen Latifah to his mother (whom he also had a tumultuous relationship) was so insightful about so many things. How heavy the brothers leaning can be on sisters in society, but also how important it is for us to hold each other in love and confidence.
Him speaking on the importance of not throwing children away to the system.. about the importance of pushing for criminal justice reform and the things that go with it— mentoring, fathering-fostering, care, was absolutely necessary for a Black man to speak on, and those who get that know and don’t need to be told why and how important that is.
Finally, the images— illustrating how real, how vibrantly and strikingly real Michael was, his life was, how pensive and young and special he was — such an important image. You think of Kurt Cobain and Basquiat and others who’ve “played through the pain” and were impactful yet we’re still consumed by their grief and their struggle — Michael K Williams is on that list.
