My relationship with SJM characters
TOG:
Sjm: Hey look there’s a hot teen assassin and look! Sexy dark-haired prince? Isn’t he hot? Me: *falls for the captain of the guard* Sjm: wait what? lemme fix that. *writes crown of midnight* Me: Nope, still love Chaol and WHAT?!!! YOU RUINED MY SHIP????! Sjm: Not to worry! Big fat hot Fae males will make you forget all about Chaol! Me: Ew who is this stupid Rowan. Bring back Chaol. Sjm: … *writes Queen of Shadows* Come on you HAVE to hate Chaol now, choose a big Fae male! Rowan, Fenrys, or Aedion. Not Lorcan though, he’s a big ass amirite? Me: NO! CHAOL WAS COMPLETELY VALID. Sjm: *takes Chaol’s mobility* Me: NOOOOOOO *cries* Sjm: Ha, he won’t even be in the next book. So you HAVE to choose somebody else to like. So who will it be? Rowan, Fenrys, or Aedion? Me: Fine, I’ll pick someone else *chooses Lorcan* Sjm: NO. YOU WERE NOT SUPPOSED TO DO THAT. *writes ending of EOS* Me: NOOOOOOO ELIDE HE DID IT FOR YOU *sobs* Sjm: Aelin is in a coffin and you’re worried about Lorcan? Anyway here’s a Chaol book for you. Me: YESSSS CHAOL IS FINALLY HAPPY Sjm: Nice nice ok. Now here’s some pain. Me: FLY FARASHA FLY FLY FLY *sobs* Sjm: FINE! I’ll convince you next time! ACOTAR: Sjm: Look hot Katniss wannabe! Hey look, hot male High Lord! He’s sooo hot amirite? Me: *falls for courtier and emissary* Sjm: WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU. YOU’RE SUPPOSED TO FALL FOR THE PRINCE NOT THE LOYAL FRIEND. Me: What can i say, I have a type. I’ll still ship Feylin tho, it’s pretty good. Sjm: Oh you’re gonna forget all about Tamlin and Lucien. Look! Hot bat boys! Me: BITCH! YOU RUINED MY SHIP AGAIN?!!! AND WHERE IS LUCIEN?!!! Sjm: *retcons Tamlin* you must hate him now?! Me: DUDE EVEN WITH RETCONS HE CAN’T BE WORSE THAN THESE SLEAZEBALLS. WHERE IS LUCIEN???!!! Sjm: You’re gonna hate him now! *writes Lucien scene at night court in ACOMAF* Me: YES. SAVE HER LUCIEN. YOU GO HONEY!! Sjm: ???? *writes end of ACOMAF* Me: YES POSSESSIVE FERAL LUCIEN STEP ON ME. Sjm: …FINE. if you can’t beat em, join em. *writes ACOWAR* Me: *sighs* Feyre and Lucien would’ve been so good together. Sjm: yeah but rhysand is better amirite Me: NOOOO IANTHE YOU BITCH Sjm: *writes Ianthe’s arm breaking scene* Me: YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS Sjm: so you like Feyre again right? Me: What? No! Lucien was the better friend! Sjm: … *brings Lucien to night court* Me: NOOOOOO LULU IS DEVASTATED HIS MATE IS HOLLOW Sjm: But look, elriel! Three brothers three sisters amirite? Me: FLOWERS NEED SUNSHINE. ELUCIEN FOREVER. Sjm: Yes yes i was just joking. Anyway, sending off Lucien to find Vassa. Me: We’ll get his POV tho right? Sjm: … Me: right????? Sjm: *writes ACOSF* THERE. He’s barely in this book. So you HAVE to pick somebody else to love. So, Cassian is hot too if you don’t like Rhysand. Me: FINE. I’ll CHOOSE SOMEONE ELSE. *picks Eris* Sjm: …I have learned my lesson. CC: Sjm: Look! Hot sorority girl who’s also an illegitimate princess! And her loyal knight! Hunt is sooooo hot amirite? Me: I’m too smart for you. He’s the first love interest so he’s NOT endgame. Don’t get attached. Sjm: wait he’s endgame this time I swear! Me: NOPEEEE NOT BUYING IT. Sjm: I’m fr this time. Isn’t he so hot? Me: *falls for the tattooed warrior prince* Sjm: … Sjm: I give up

Malina is like Chaolena, in the sense that Mal was also afraid of Alina's powers and could never fully accept them and what they meant. He may have loved the orphan he grew up with, but he could never be with her when she had her powers because he was too afraid of them. And yeah, it turned out fine for him in the end since she lost her powers and all (which I still think is like why would you end the book like that, but that's not what I'm ranting about now), but the powers were a part of her, and as Dorian Havilliard once said, "You cannot pick and choose what parts of her to love."

Here's the thing about speaking on canon especially when it comes to an incomplete series:
Canonically, Celaena and Chaol fell in love.
Canonically, Celaena and Chaol kissed and slept together.
Canonically, by the end of Crown of Midnight Celaena tells Chaol she will always choose him.
If you hold on to that quote especially if you didn't get to Heir of Fire or Queen of Shadows yet, you'll assume Celaena will return because she said she will always choose Chaol.
Did she in the end? No.
The next book planted the first seeds of a potential relationship with Rowan that came to fruition by the following book and specifically towards the end of Queen of Shadows.
This is a big example of how the author is in control of what happens in canon and can shift canon to her own liking (which she did multiple times).
So, when talking about future scenarios and dismissing theories and opinions based on the recent canon information we get (ACOSF) in favor of the canon information from books that were published years ago, that comes off as being selective. That is like choosing to cling to what Celaena says about always choosing Chaol and dismissing the crumbs that are sprinkled in Heir of Fire and Queen of Shadows because you're not a fan of the eventual outcome that is Rowaelin (that explains the Chaolena vs Rowaelin ship wars back then from what I was told were quite aggressive).
Just because it's canon that Azriel with Feyre saved Elain (as he did others) or carried her bridal style (which he did with Lucien and I mean she was barely a living being in his arms) or staying up late to discuss garden plans whether people take it as platonic or romantic, but let's take it as romantic—it doesn't mean that it eliminates any future changes in canon from a romantic perspective for Azriel and Elain ending up with different people. Just because people use it as canon doesn't mean it's set in stone especially if the series is incomplete.
Knowing what was foreshadowed in canon can't be done until the series is complete and you get the bigger picture of how the author wrote it. @bookofmirth has an excellent post on foreshadowing and I'm one of the people that fell in the trap of calling things already foreshadowed when it didn't actually happen, that's a theory until proven true to be a foreshadowing.
Readers are not in control of canon, the author is. So people might get disappointed if they cling to past canon to the point they'll be upset if the author decides to take a different direction than what they expected because—again—the author is in control of canon and what she decides to write is what becomes canon and not what the readers assume (even myself).
It doesn't mean past canon does not matter but there are certain plot points such as romantic interests that are easy to switch if the author decides it regardless of what she established canonically in the past—Sarah as an author is known for this it should not come as a surprise. She herself says that she doesn't confirm any couples until she writes the book because she is surprised by where the characters lead her, and in another interview she says she could be in the middle of writing a book and a ship pops up and she sinks the one she originally intended in favor of that. No ship is safe.
So using canon as a defense mechanism is not really that effective when it comes to a future romance until the book for that couple is written on paper.
Also, @acourtofthought did a brilliant post explaining canon that you should check out! This sort of is inspired by hers 🫶🏼

Thank you for reaching out! So, I picked up TOG for the first time at the end of June, and fell in love with the first two because of Chaolaena. Fast forward to February, when I finally got copies of my own. I'm not planning on reading them for several more months, but now I'm wondering if it's a mistake. I wrote a venting post in the fall detailing my unhappiness with how SJM handled things. And now it's just gotten to a point where I'm getting more and more angry over it. I don't feel like I can really express myself freely because most pro-Chaol fans are only for Chao, and are anti Aelin, or they like Chaorene, which I'm not for. But yeah. I don't even have to go into the anti SJM tag to get "triggered" as it was.
Welcome to the club. I got into ToG before Queen of Shadows and became a Fan. I preordered books so I could get pins/tote bags. I LOVED it. Then the Fae agenda started pushing harder and harder. I latched onto the witches and Lysandra and the non-Fae stuff. I wanted Rowan and Aelin to have a mentor/mentee relationship like Geralt and Ciri. I never did finish the last book because I got So Sick of every other page gushing over Fae. Basically what my tiff with SJM boils down to "missed opportunities". She focused so much on Rowan/Aelin that she missed a lot of the potentially fascinating political subplots. Ansel is Queen of the Wastes. The Wastes are the witches' ancestral home. And yet there are no issues there? I was excited to see them FEUD over it. Galan Ashryver is related to Aelin, but how did he end up in Wendlynn when the rest of the Ashryver family is in Terrasen? Was Elide a witch or not? There are so many unanswered questions I still have. I won't say do or don't read the books, it's your choice. One of my favorite characters (Lysandra) comes in in book 4, and again, I LOVE the witches. There's some good stuff there, but if you're a fan of Chaolena, I will warn you, it's a rough ride again. Feel free to DM me any time about your thoughts.

Scared to post this one but... Sjm said that she fell in love with the ACOTAR characters after writing book one and then wrote all of book two and part of book 3. She then became obsessed with Rhysand and decided to insert him earlier than intended to make him a LI later on but otherwise kept the first book more or less the same. Sjm also said that in the original TOG Rowan was there from the beginning but he was never a love interest for the MC and then she rewrote the series to introduce Rowan a little later in Heir of Fire so he could be the LI. So there is a version of these series where Feylin and Chaolena are endgame. Chaol’s character suffered A LOT but thankfully he wasn’t turned full on into a tool, I loved him the whole time (tho many people disagree); Tamlin on the other hand, became more and more difficult to like because he was overwritten so many times to turn him into the bad guy bc there was absolutely no way anyone would choose Rhysand if Tamlin remained “nice,” and it’s really not a good romance if you have to pull down one character to bring up another. So despite BOTH sides making mistakes in BOTH relationships, the men bear the brunt of the blame. But part of being feminist is acknowledging that BOTH sides make mistakes. Making men look like the villain in a relationship to prop up the women is not feminism. This explains why the Feylin and Chaolena romantic development was so much better than for Feysand and Rowaelin; both were overwritten.

what ship do you hate the most?
oh, how could i ever possibly narrow it down to one? i've dipped my toes in a lot of fandoms over the years and here's an incomplete list of ships i ✨despise✨:
percy/rachel- idc if rachel is cool 9 year old me never really understood misogyny and girl hate until miss rachel showed up and stood in the way of my girl annabeth GET OUT OF HEREEEEE
rowaelin- ok tbf i dont hateeee them and qos rowaelin makes me certifiably insane but chaolena forever.. nay... samlaena
elriel- yeah i had a sjm era and i have a lot of unvoiced opinions i hate elriel with a burning passion mostly bc elain is the most boring useless character ever sorryyy
noorhelm- GET THAT MAN AWAY FROM HER! noliv, winterberg, and incantava are the only ones who can stay
kataang- im a zutara truther 4lyfe<3
katniss/gale- this was never meant to be a viable ship if you READ THE BOOKS but still. nothing but wrath and fury give me peeniss or give me death
steddie- MY! TRUTH! I'D KILL EDDIE AGAIN IF I COULD!
mileven- i wasn't in the byler trenches in 2017 for nothing
prongsfoot- i dont need to say anything here. either you get it or you dont and i cant help if you don't
regulily- these 2 r just no way romantically compatible to me. evan(s) is right there!!! (<- delusional but correct)
bellarita (or whatever the fuck weird name they're called)- don't care didn't ask
bartylus- this is my truth......... sorry bartylus enjoyers but roach bartydora and jegulus are right there... why would bartylus be anywhere near the equation
moonchaser- so boring to me sorry
marylily- used to adore them, still vibe in certain circumstances but. meh.
anyway!
ship ask game

some explanations i get from antis who hates acotar and don't ship elriel because
they are scared of the twist sarah brings in her stories like they always gives me the example of tamlin and feyre, chaol and aelin.. to express how sarah is going to twist the tale ! which simply tells some of them haven't yet moved on from the feylin and chaolena ending! but the fact is you don't have to ship a new ship just becoz you are scared of the past experiences you can simply accept the changes.. it's not like sarah has ever twisted her whole story in a single page! she always let them build the relationship first. rowan elain took a whole book to build their relationship! and it took another book to confess and finally accept eachother! feysand happened on a single book and all their build up was connected with the first book! it was the under the mountain plot where rhys was helping feyre in every possible way was the plot that clearly said they are going to be a thing in future!
elain and azriel will be boring together! wait! now tell me which exact characters of sarah j maas were boring? yrene was boring? elide was boring? yrene got a full book for herself where she did everything with her power saved the world kill the king! and even saved chaol! was that boring? wait do u really think that elain is just going to tend to her garden if she get a whole book for herself? a seer! who already showed a glimpse of her power in all previous books! even held a dagger to kill the king ! are you expecting her to be the soft and silent flower girl making bread and building garden for herself in a whole book! why both nesta and rhysand said that she is finally being interesting?? if the author have to write the same tale about her why she said elain is getting interesting? why she took nesta's power! and make elain the last and only choice to deal with the rest of the queens and koschai? and the trove! what is the meaning of making her the villian when she with her mighty powers gifted by the Cauldron can help the highlords to win the war!
did sarah ever come up with a bad plot? which one is it? do u remember dorian? his lover was beheaded infront him ,a demon was living inside his body yet sarah made him the good guy! he again found love ! why would she make elain evil ? what is the meaning of ignoring canon ship with four books of story build up?
yeah everyone can have their own ship and can choose whom they wants to follow! its simple ! as it is . you can praise your gwynriel ship or elucien ship and enjoy your fandom within your people! but what is the meaning of mocking another ship day and night! and demeaning an author's characters whose book you are reading for so many years! why would you do that? she is putting her years of efforts in writing her books! and now people are mocking even the main characters!
what is the meaning of mocking and hating feysand? if you don't even like the main characters why you even read the book? if you you only ship nesta then why are you ignoring her character development in the whole series? did nesta ended up alone at the end ? why calling inner circle toxic? when nesta at the end of the day becomes a part of it?
what is the meaning of comparing azriel with tamlin to say he is wrong for elain while you are shipping him with gwyn? wasn't he will be wrong for gwyn as well?
what is the meaning of calling azriel and elain toxic for showing attraction for eachother and shipping gwyn and azriel who using her for distraction!
if elucien is a thing! why you don't have the answer to what lucien did to understand his own mate?
why there is a bunch of people have to defend elain's character when the author haven't said a single bit of evil thing about her in the book?.why azriel is being compared with tamlin while azriel did so much for his people that tamlin could never have done !
why you guys are hating every single character and yet reading the book?

Which books by Sarah maas are your top 3 favourites and which ones are your 3 least favourite?
My love,
TOP THREE? TOP THREE? ARE YOU NEW HERE? DO YOU NOT KNOW MY IMPOSSIBILITY TO CHOOSE STUFF I NEED A MINIMUM OF FIVE OTHERWISE I WILL HAVE A BREAKDOWN.
Best of the best
ACOMAF. Listen we all know it's ACOMAF.
Queen of Shadows. Fight me this one is the best one in the series.
Kingdom of Ash. No one will ever deliver what KoA delivered as a series finale. She is UNBEATABLE.
Bonuuuuus: House of Earth and Blood and A Court of Silver Flames (Yes the last 20% was a bit clunky buuuut I will overlook that because Nesta's journey was chef's kiss in that book).
Least of the best:
Crown of midnight with its Chaolena agenda can choke :)
Maybe HOSAB... that book had no business being 800 pages long. But then again it had RuhnLidia so like... a win is a win.
ACOFAS. Fan service all the way, here for the vibes and nothing else.
Obvi obvi I love all of her books and I do find remarkable strengths in all of them narrative and literary wise.
💜💜

Do you have non-canon ships you like? Or a ship that sunk but you still enjoy?
PS: I still can't believe ppl are insulting others for shipping. Where's the fun in fandoms 😥 i can enjoy two characters that don't even know about each other's existence just because i liked the idea and the AU of it
Hmm I'm not really much of a crack shipper tbh. I usually need a little something there in canon to give me a feel of the characters together or light a little spark, so I can't think of any off the top of my head right now 🤔 although I'm sure there's probably one or two
As for ships that sunk, Chaolena will forever be my favourite ToG ship. I loved them and sure they crashed and burned but they were so good while they lasted, which was like a week haha! I like and ship Rowaelin too but Chaolena is just the ToG ship I felt most passionate about.
And you are so right my friend! Exactly! Some people take fictional characters way too seriously
