Welcome to….
Futurama Showdown!
The Showdown will consist of 72 of Futurama’s characters. Due to the nature of the show, I wasn’t able to include all the characters I wanted to, but I tried to make sure that popular or often discussed characters were included, but I am biased and included a few characters that I just really wanted to see (this is for you, Pazuzu).
Most of the characters will be fighting it out alone, but some of the couples/groups in the show are placed together for simplicity’s sake. Yell at me in my asks if you so desire.
The bracket was almost entirely randomized. I put characters on a wheel and spun it, and then randomized the order or the lineups.
The Bracket:

Ah, here's Peter Lorre from one of the films I just cannot find: Lorre as Klotz, Schuß im Morgengrauen (A Shot at Dawn), 1932.
**Plea: If you have a source for this film, let me know!**
--
"Lorre appeared as a trigger-happy thug in UFA’s Schuss im Morgengrauen (A Shot at Dawn, 1932), based on The Woman and the Emerald by Harry Jenkins, a bullet-ridden crime drama centered around a jewel heist. Convinced he could do nothing with the 'underwritten' role, the actor suggested making his character a frustrated sex maniac.
"'He played it like that,' remembered Rudolf Katscher, who coauthored the screenplay. 'He followed every young female character from behind, with his hand and fingers outstretched to pinch her bottom. So when he started that gag, the audience knew what was coming and roared with laughter. In fact, he never got to "grips" with any unsuspecting bottom!'
"Critics credited producer-director Alfred Zeisler and his writers, Katscher and Otto and Egon Eis, for tightening the tension with humor and singled out the 'splendid acting' of the criminal types, including the 'horribly grotesque' Lorre, who made the most of his small part." - The Lost One: A Life of Peter Lorre
--
I know this film is out there. I know Lorre really only had a small part in it. I want it anyway and its continual elusiveness is irksome. I think I see mentions of it on sites all in Spanish or Swedish or German, an actual film to view versus just a description or a photo, O wondrous moment! --but then, alas, I get a malware alert if I were to proceed.
Until that happy day, here are other photos from Schuss im Morgengrauen. Some of them are Getty, and perhaps you've seen them all already, but you won't mind, will you? 😁

Having finished Trails from Zero, there's one main thing I want to write out on, because I'm simultaneously pretty impressed with Falcom's writing, but they didn't quite stick the landing. Putting it beneath a break for discussion of CSA as it relates to the story and one of the characters:
I spent a lot of this game ping-ponging my opinion of how they were handling the decision to expand upon Renne's backstory by introducing the Hayworths and tying it to the D∴G cult. I wasn't keen on the idea that Renne's parents were genuinely good people who didn't abandon her, and I really wasn't keen on the idea of expanding out the sex trafficking ring to a Ancient Super Cult with Grand Deigns For The World.
In the end, though, they came through. The Hayworths' intent for leaving Renne in the situation where she wound up being involved in sex trafficking doesn't ultimately matter except to give Renne a break when getting some closure about that aspect of her life, especially since she decided to join Estelle and Joshua in the end, rather than go back to the Hayworths. Guenter revealing that the Paradise Lodge wasn't actually part of the Ancient Super Cult experiments for Gnosis testing but a useful honeypot for the wealthy and politically influential squared the circle on why they would even have a whole location dedicated to sex trafficking (besides For Teh Evulz).
However, right as I was preparing to give them a gold star for threading the needle on this whole thing, they inexplicably dropped this:
Tumblr media
This is so fuckin' stunningly stupid.
This is referencing the fact that for the first chunk of Renne's backstory while she's at the Paradise Lodge, she's accompanied by a group of (faceless) children, who all gas her up for being so special and cool and that they'll do all the things she doesn't want to do. By the end, it's revealed that they of course didn't exist, and were just a coping mechanism for dealing with The Horror.
It's so unbelievably stupid that they felt compelled to justify having those faceless children around when the answer it's really not that complicated. I can't imagine anyone got to that part and went "BUT HOW DID SHE IMAGINE THOSE CHILDREN?!?!?!" You can even preserve this specific moment- the purpose of which is to really drill down that this dude is A Bad Guy And Worse Than Weissmann- by having him lament to loss of Renne as a test subject by changing this to "she has maintained the gifts provided by Gnosis, long after it should have cleared her system!"
It also kinda feels like a waste to have the D∴G cult be so irredeemably evil and conclusively dealt with here, on account of the fact that having a faction that exists in direct opposition to the Septian Church could be interesting to have around, especially in a setting where belief in Aidios is taken for granted. But using context clues from Cold Steel II, it seems like Falcom had already decided Ouroboros would be the villain faction for the setting, so it's probably fine.
The important thing is: Estelle and Joshua got Renne back, and also the SSS was there.

Dear Diary: Oscar, Janet, Charles and/or Günter
Jesus Sapph you really want to kill me don't you /j
OSCAR
Dear Diary,
Things are going very well. I pleased my father today. This may be enough to keep me from being beaten tonight, but it certainly isn't enough for me to eat. I'm starving. My younger sister brought me food for a while, but once father found out, she was dispersed and I was whipped. I miss her.
My brother is excelling in everything, as always. He has never gotten punished. He's perfect. I want to be more like him. I want father to praise me like he does my brother. I want to be perfect. Why must I only get noticed when I do something wrong?
My fangs are growing in. It hurts. But I won't complain. Demons don't complain. My father will bathe me in holy water if I complain. I hate holy things. They hurt. That's why they're bad.
Father is calling me. He sounds angry... but he always does. I must go, otherwise I might get hurt.
JANET
Dear Diary,
I fell asleep outside today, while watching Mary and Artie play. I didn't even realize I was tired. I hate myself for being so weak. It's been years since I was rescued, why am I not better yet? I really worried Artie, he's so young and he doesn't know why mommy is so tired. I'm scared I won't be able to protect my children if I have to.
Günter found me and brought the kids and I inside. He told them that mommy needed to sleep and that he would play with them after he put me to bed. I woke up a few times, but I was so tired that I couldn't even move.
I'm scared that one day I'll fall asleep and I won't wake up.
CHARLES
Dear Diary,
I've failed her. I've failed my darling Jenny. Every time I think I've found her, I'm wrong. Braith tells me that she must have died, but I don't believe that. I can't believe that. I don't want to. It's been over a century since the incident, and everyone else has given up.
At least, everyone except William. I grieve for him. Not only has he lost his sister, but he lost his father as well. Auguste and him were very close, and Janet was even closer. I can't even bring myself to talk to him. I'm a failure, how could I even look him in the eyes? I should've done something better. I should've been able to stop what happened.
Braith says I should stop drinking so much. I don't want to. It helps with the pain. It's better than opium. She agrees with that, but she keeps insisting that I should try to cut back on the alcohol. She tried to hide my stash once. She did not do it again. Why am I such a failure?
GÜNTER
Dear Diary,
I've finally done it. I've proposed to Janet. She said yes, and is currently celebrating with her mortal family. I'm so happy. Charles may not have approved but I love Janet. I love her so much. I'm going to protect her with my life.
Hanna was happy for me. She practically raised me, so of course she was excited. I'm sure papa and vati would be proud if they were here. I miss them. They're here in spirit. I know they are.
Janet is calling me over. I must go now.

Little Book Review: Once Upon a Maiden Lane
Author: Elizabeth Hoyt.
Publication Date: 2017.
Genre: Historical romance (Georgian).
Premise: After a surprisingly happy childhood in the St. Giles Home for Unfortunate Infants and Foundlings, Mary Whitsun has grown up and found a position as a nursemaid in a duke’s household. Reasonably content with her life, she’s shaken when Henry Collins, Lord Blackwell, mistakes her for the apparently identical Lady Johanna Albright. She’s even more disturbed when she learns that Lady Johanna has a long-lost twin...who was also betrothed in infancy to the handsome Lord Blackwell before she went missing. Is she the twin? Can she adjust to a new family and an aristocratic lifestyle? And is Lord Blackwell as kind and supportive as he is handsome?
Thoughts: There’s an episode of Futurama where Professor Farnsworth creates a bowler hat that gives a monkey super-intelligence. The monkey, Guenter, is unhappy with the pressures of being a genius, but he’s loathe to live as a regular monkey who tries to wear the hat on his butt. In the end, his hat is slightly damaged, leaving him with only moderate human intelligence. Instead of allowing Professor Farnsworth to fix the hat, Guenter happily chooses to attend business school. Spoiler alert: this novel is eerily similar. Mary ends up with more money, leisure, and family connections than she could ever expect as an orphaned servant, but she doesn’t have to enter high society (which she finds uncomfortable) or try to fit in with everyone in the family (some of whom are dicks). All in all, a good outcome. I just wish the road to it had been different.
I don’t usually have super-high expectations for romance novellas. It’s a difficult length to work with; many authors end up either trying to cram more conflict than they can handle or stretching a minuscule plot way too thin. When they’re part of a series or universe, they’re often more diverse than their full-length counterparts in terms of sexuality, ethnicity, disability, class, and age. This is a mixed blessing; I’m glad that they’re available, but it would be nice if lesbian characters (for example) got more full-length novels. Romance novellas have gotten better since I started reading the genre, but I still mostly think of them as nice little treats that you can have for the price of a bottle of soda.
Once Upon a Maiden Lane falls squarely in this category. The working-class heroine isn’t a novelty for the series--her social status is higher than at least two protagonists of full-length novels--and I was a little disappointed that she was immediately slotted into an Anastasia plot. Surely a servant girl can have some small-scale romantic adventures without being mistaken for an aristocrat. Even putting aside my initial hopes, I think Hoyt should’ve emphasized Mary Whitsun’s relationship with Temperance, Lady Caire, more. In the first book of the Maiden Lane series, Temperance is a middle-class, non-Anglican* widow who helps run an orphanage with her siblings. She’s wracked by guilt for cheating on her late husband one time, so much so that she won’t allow herself to admit how much she loves Mary, a then-twelve-year-old orphan whom Temperance raised from a toddler. Part of Temperance’s arc is that she stops letting her guilt control her life and is able to be a better, more openly affectionate guardian to Mary. Temperance appears in this novella, but she’s a pretty distant figure, and I think that’s a missed opportunity. There’s more emotional resonance in Lord Blackwell standing up to his bullying father. I liked that part, but it shouldn’t have been the high point of the novel.
*It’s not clear what sort of Protestants Temperance and her family are, but it’s something that’s very charity-oriented and austere. Are they Methodists? I think it’s too early for them to be Methodists.
Hot Goodreads Take: “The constant use of the heroine's maiden name drove me nuts,” opines one reviewer, baffling me. Mary has never been married! She only gets married in the last chapter! Any last name she has is a maiden name! Does the reviewer just mean her last name was used too often? I guess it’s used a lot, but it is an important part of Mary’s identity, given that Temperance gave it to her after bringing her to the orphanage on Whitsunday. (The novella also gets this detail wrong, claiming that Mary was left on the orphanage doorstep instead of Temperance paying a gin-seller/bawd to hand her over.)

Hearing you talk about Werner von Braun made me curious: What's your opinion on Guenter Wendt - who was after all a member of the Luftwaffe and fought for Nazi Germany?
Ah, tbh Guenter had slipped my mind! I guess my feelings are similar to how I feel about von Braun... so, not great. I think there is a pretty big difference though, in terms of their legacies?
One of the things I’ve been looking for in my research is how people (Jews, NASA coworkers, WWII vets, etc.) felt about former Nazis in the U.S. Among a pretty wide variety of reactions, one that I found particularly interesting was that of Yves Béon, a survivor of Dora (where von Braun built his V-2s). What bothered him was not the fact that former Nazis were working in America -- but the fact that they were celebrated, rewarded, decorated, hailed as heroes.
And I think that’s a place where you can make some kind of distinction between people like von Braun (he’s a pretty singular character, though) and others like Wendt. von Braun is fairly well-known, maybe even famous, and widely celebrated for his contributions to rocketry and the American space program. I think Wendt is really only recognized by the spaceflight history community, which is a relatively niche group. Both Nazis, both complicated, but I think I feel more frustration towards the veneration of von Braun. Wendt’s lack of recognition is a more appropriate legacy. There’s no easy way to handle this topic.

Janet choose between staying with Oscar or Guenter trading places with you.
cw- discussion of abuse
Janet frowned, looking away. This... this shouldn't have been a difficult question. Obviously no one else should have to suffer through this hell, but...
Her mind went to all the times Guenter had hit her, all the times he had pushed her around, yelled at her, threatened to hurt her. And she hesitated. She couldn't make a decision. She couldn't make the right decision.
"I don't..." she started, her voice breaking, getting more frantic. "I don't know, I really don't. I don't know the answer, I'm sorry." Breaths came faster now as her eyes blurred with tears. "I..." She bit her lip.
"Our children already have one broken parent. It wouldn't do them any good for their father to end up like... like me." Janet clasped her hands together in her lap, taking a shaky breath.
"I'd stay with Oscar."
