TEACHER/STUDENT BOOK RECS
*if you want me to add a forbidden romance list, let me know*
𓃠 This is a list with links to books that have teacher/student, age gap, and experienced/less experienced themes that I have read! These are in order from most recommended to least recommended based on my opinion.
𓃠 This will be updated as I read more! Think something should be added to the list, then let me know!
𓃠 To find the Age Gap/TeacherxStudent Movie list, click on the link on my pinned post!
⭐️= highly recommend/changed my life
😇= no smut
🌶️=contains smut
💦=read to really get your rocks off
highlighted=warning
PROFESSOR/COACH BOOK LIST
The Unrequited by Saffron A. Kent-⭐️😇
ProfessorxStudent & mental health themes
Cute little poet embarrassingly falls for her grumpy professor. Beautiful slow burn and perfectly describes what it feels like to want someone and not feel enough for them. She is such a realistic female lead and reminds me a lot of y’all 😂. This is THE teacher crush community book. If you don’t read anything read this!!
The Professor by Invi Wright-⭐️🌶️
ProfessorxStudent
Cute romance by young, new, and self published author. Very relatable female lead. If you enjoyed The Unrequited, you will like this book for all of the same reasons. Quick and easy read, only 240. She isn’t perfect, she clumsy, and I wouldn’t even say she’s socially awkward, she just a normal college student in her early 20s. She’s a fun narrator. This author has a lot of potential and her writing will only get better.
Gabriel’s Inferno by Slyvain Reynard-⭐️😇
ProfessorxStudent
Such a good dark academia book. Beautifully written and actually has a movie adaptation. I would definitely recommend this if you want a realistic couple but a bit more serious. Characters have so much depth
Off Balance Series by Lucia Franco- 💦
CoachxStudent
Warning: female lead is age of consent NOT legal age.
If you want something really forbidden and fucked up, read this. If you want the MOST insane sex scenes, read this (MINORS STOP). I really don’t even want to add this series to this list but for the girls who wanna go there, have fun. I started this when I was still in high school, read the 3rd one as an adult, it’s not as easy to read now. Take that info as you please
Lessons In Sin by Pam Goodwin-🌶️
TeacherxStudent with 18 Y.O female lead
Troubled rich girl gets sent off to a catholic boarding school and falls for the asshole Dean of the school. Smut is pretty good, plot works. I’m not going to say it’s bad, I think whether or not it’s enjoyable depends on the person. It wasn’t bad, I just wasn’t obsessed. If you’re just trying to live vicariously through her (aren’t we all), then it works!
Teach Me by L. L. Ash-🌶️
ProfessorxStudent
Really good start, and I do mean GREAT start… I just feel like the sex scene came too soon (Ch. 9/32) and it threw me off but I also like SUPER slow burns. It’s still a good book. I enjoyed the male love interest, Professor Harlo. They’re cute together. Grump and Sunshine.
Dark Notes by Pam Goodwin-
TeacherxStudent & themes of abuse
Probably DNF-ing
AGE GAP BOOK LIST
Something In The Way Series by Jessica Hawkins-⭐️😇
Sister’s Boyfriend/Husband & “I saw him first”
Most beautiful romance series I’ve ever read, best written books by Jessica Hawkins. I recommend all of her other books. Lake is 16 when she first meets Manning but nothing sexual happens between them for another 3 books until she’s in her 20s. Beautiful slow burn with characters full of depth.
Sinner by Sierra Simone- ⭐️💦
Brother’s Best Friend & religious themes
Amazing character creation and mapping. These characters feel real! This book is about “teaching” a girl about sex before she becomes a nun. It’s not just a bang bang, hump hump book. It has heart and it really good. If you enjoy religious themed romance, you may enjoy Priest by Sierra Simone too. I didn’t 💀
Birthday Girl by Penelope Douglas- 💦
Ex’s Dad
Most popular forbidden romance so whatever you’ve heard about it, dump it. This might be the most tame book on this list. Pacing is good, well written main character. Insane amounts of smut but it doesn’t drive the story forward so feel free to skip it if you get tired.
Love Unexpected by Q. B. Tyler- 💦
Ex Stepdad & parent death
This book is HOT! However after the first few scenes, I got a bit tired of the smut. Well written enough female lead with a rushed ending. However if you just need something to read and not despise it, it’s good enough.
Strictly Off Limits by Jessica Hawkins-🌶️
Dad’s Best Friend
Jessica is my favorite author so I’m a bit biased but she definitely isn’t a smut writer. This novella would’ve been better without smut however it isn’t super present and doesn’t really drive the story forward so don’t feel like you’re missing anything if you skip the smut!
The Doctor by Nikki Sloane- 💦
Ex’s Dad
personally didn’t care for this book, smut starts off way too quick and I’m more of a slow burn girl. It is a novella however, it was still too quick. However! You may love it <3
𓃠 If I’m not reading fast enough for you and you want to see what I will be reading in the future here is my Amazon TBR, have at it!
𓃠 If you want to see a more organized bookshelf of what I’ve read, here is my Goodreads!

However, when a little boy goes missing and her new friend Barbara disappears, she is forced into a world that she had no business being in. Throw in a boy who started out as the worst person, and a group of kids including her next-door neighbor, trying to save the world, her life couldn't get any more hectic.

ANOTHER PUBLIC LIBRARY SCORE. The THEATER OF BLOOD BluRay has a much better picture quality, than another version that I have seen. It needed a reissue. This is a favorite Vincent Price film. Diana Rigg is the co-star, I love her work. This was also one of Vincent Price's favorite films. A Shakespearean actor takes poetic revenge on the critics who denied him recognition. There are many familiar British character actors, in the film.
It was filmed in England, and Vincent Price and Coral Browne first met on the set and later married, Diana Rigg introduced them. Vincent Price made many films, in the UK.
Theatre of Blood (known in the U.S. as Theater of Blood) is a 1973 British horror comedy film directed by Douglas Hickox, and starring Vincent Price as vengeful actor Edward Lionheart and Diana Rigg as his daughter Edwina. The cast:
Vincent Price ... Edward Lionheart
Diana Rigg ... Edwina Lionheart
Ian Hendry ... Peregrine Devlin
Harry Andrews ... Trevor Dickman
Robert Coote ... Oliver Larding
Michael Hordern ... George Maxwell
Robert Morley ... Meredith Merridew
Coral Browne ... Chloe Moon
Jack Hawkins ... Solomon Psaltery
Arthur Lowe ... Horace Sprout
Dennis Price ... Hector Snipe
Milo O'Shea ... Inspector Boot
Eric Sykes ... Sgt. Dogge
Diana Dors ... Maisie Psaltery

Val-Cula Daily - Doki Doki Komuri Update
Tumblr media
Last update in the Drac-log, checking in with the final plot threast of the last few days, the continuing adventures of Mina and Lucy-Chan.
Lucy arrives by train to Whitby, a seaside town in North Yorkshire. A common comment I see, and disagree with, is that the novel Dracula involves an "Old World" monster from the past entering a "new, modern world", Eastern superstition pushing into Western reason. Frankly, I find that reading to be lacking. As we saw in Jonathan's recipe-gathering travelogue, Eastern Europe is a vibrant place, just as connected to the modern world despite its remoteness and cultural distance. Likewise, in Mina's descriptions of Yorkshire, England has plenty of its own supernatural mysteries and centuries old history in play in Dracula.
Tumblr media
The Larpool Viaduct was constructed in 1884, and would be a brand new example of Victorian engineering.
Tumblr media
Whitby Abbey, described in the same paragraph, is a ruin for centuries by Stoker's time, having been built in 657 CE and confiscated by Henry VIII in 1538 CE. Like Dracula's Transylvania, drawing in contemporary law reviews and banking from all across Europe, England is a mix of the mundane and the supernatural in much the same way. Mina makes reference to a "White Lady" ghost who haunts ruins.
-------
Marmion, referenced as well, is a 1808 poem by Sir Walter Scott full of melodrama and intrigue. Per wikipedia, a summation:
The poem tells how Lord Marmion, a favourite of Henry VIII of England, lusts for Clara de Clare, a rich woman. He and his mistress, Constance De Beverley, forge a letter implicating Clare's fiancé, Sir Ralph De Wilton, in treason. Constance, a dishonest nun, hopes that her aid will restore her to favour with Marmion. When De Wilton loses the duel he claims in order to defend his honour against Marmion, he is obliged to go into exile. Clare retires to a convent rather than risk Marmion's attentions.
Constance's hopes of a reconciliation with Marmion are dashed when he abandons her; she ends up being walled up alive in the Lindisfarne convent for breaking her vows. She takes her revenge by giving the Abbess, who is one of her three judges, documents that prove De Wilton's innocence. De Wilton, having returned disguised as a pilgrim, follows Marmion to Edinburgh where he meets the Abbess, who gives him the exonerating documents. When Marmion's host, the Earl of Angus (Archibald Douglas) is shown the documents, he arms De Wilton and accepts him as a knight again. De Wilton's plans for revenge are overturned by the Battle of Flodden. Marmion dies on the battlefield, while De Wilton displays heroism, regains his honour, retrieves his lands, and marries Clare.
------
Mina meets a man in a pictureque graveyard overlooking the bay. An accent assumes. Stoker is a great writer and Dracula ages incredibly well and reads smoothly... until you meet his accents.
--------
Mina receives one of the letters, via Mr. Hawkin's, that Dracula sent out in place of Jonathan. Mina immediately questions its veracity, because Mina is the smartest character in the book and doesn't get enough credit for this. She's distracted, however, by Lucy's habit of sleep-walking.

[ savannah lee smith | cis woman | she / her | twenty-six ] —— it’s just another typical week in hawkins i guess — isn’t that right, monica mckinney? huh, guess they can’t hear me over maneater by daryl hall & john oates playing on their walkman, but it looks like they’re headed to work at lovelace lingerie. did you know monnie has been in hawkins for her entire life? yeah, they’ve been described as a bit judgemental, but i suppose them also being poised outweighs the negative. i’ve also heard people say they remind them of an old cheerleader uniform collecting dust in the back of your closet, a collection of plaid skirts and babydoll dresses, a permanent hole in your heart like a missing puzzle piece, using men as an accessory to a new outfit, and the feeling of being alienated from your own surname… however, that could just be this weeks newest rumor.
Tumblr media
character inspirations — dionne davenport (clueless), shiv roy (succession), blair waldorf (gossip girl), aubrey hope (gossip girl reboot), olivia pope (scandal), hanna marin (pretty little liars), bianca stratford (10 things i hate about you), madeline mackenzie (big little lies), north (detroit: become human).
full name — monica mckinney nickname(s) — monnie, mon, mckinney name meaning — unique, to advise, alone, nun, solitary age — twenty-six date of birth — january 2nd, 1960 place of birth — hawkins, indiana current location — hawkins, indiana gender — cis female pronouns — she / her sexual orientation — heterosexual ? but why are girls so pretty and why do they smell so good and why (she is a lesbian) religion — catholic occupation — owner & sales expert at lovelace lingerie education level — bachelors in business and fashion merchandice residence — single family home with jason & izzy family — douglas mckinney, father. maura robinson mckinney, mother. patrick mckinney, younger brother, deceased. finances — upper middle class spoken languages — english faceclaim — savannah lee smith
tw: abuse mention, implied abuse, mention of hard drug use
bread and born like championship horses, the mckinney household was held to very high standards. maura robinson met douglas mckinney in university where maura attended for an mrs. degree and douglas ? engineering. he was a few months from graduation when maura stuck her nails into douglas’ back. he had a future, came from a great family name, and could allow maura to get her ❛ degree ❜ within her first year of school, letting her party the rest of it away.
married before maura’s senior year was over, she swiftly moved into douglas’ single family home he already owned — and maura went straight into decorating. she turned the place into a home and with a home comes the next step in their relationship. the first born was monica herself, followed closely by patrick. two beautiful children was enough for maura, and all douglas really wanted was a son.
monica grew up in a semi-normal, albeit, very privileged life. her father came from money and rose the ranks fairly quickly in his bland corporate business career. maura and monnie didn’t care what he did, only that he brought home the money to support them and their vastly expensive tastes. monnie learned her taste after her mother. money and material goods were in place of love and affection, and monnie didn’t care.
she was fairly popular in school, mostly since she bought her way into it. her friends were fake, but they were there. the only real friends she made were on the cheer squad — especially veronica. to stay in shape and keep up with appearances and popularity, monnie joined the cheer squad in high school after doing cheer for a few years on a private team. it was something she enjoyed because there was a certain power in it that everyone had. the boys wanted you, the girls wanted to be you. influence was all she ever wanted.
and, oh, did boys want monnie. she is very aware and confident in and of her sexual nature, its one of the one things she is very sure of in herself. she didn’t care if it was because she came from money and made any guy on her arm the new coolest kid in school. she just wanted an accessory — and when they got too invested, she’d try a new one on. there was never any real feelings in her multitude of relationships, which she could easily blame on the lack of example offered to her by her own parents. everything in her life was transactional. so much so that she often wondered why she never actually liked any of the men she dated (... lol)
but patrick ? oh, patrick was different. he was such a good kid. always sticking up to bullies and even working his way up when it came to gaining friends and sudden popularity as well. having monnie for an older sister probably helped, but patrick got onto the basketball team all on his own. he liked the team, even if he didn’t agree with everything they said or did. he was the better, nicer mckinney kid, and everyone knew it.
things started taking a turn for the worse when monnie was in her last year of university. she was close to getting her degree and moving somewhere like new york or europe for fashion when she found out about the abuse. she surprised patrick at home one night when she noticed the first bruise.
patrick told her about everything that night in her car. he talked about the way dad was acting and how his attitude had suddenly shifted. he was normally an absent father, but now he needed to know everything that was going on in patrick’s life. how he suspected alcohol at first, but then he found the baggie he had been hiding in his briefcase.
he then talked about when the hitting started. first, it was when patrick got in the way, then it turned personal. maura was never involved, but she also never involved herself. her after university plans changed that visit and she decided staying in hawkins would be best — at least until patrick was able to leave too. back at home, monnie would help try to cover his bruises with her makeup, but the bruises were always too multi-colored for her foundations to work.
then, all of a sudden, patrick was gone. something about a murderer on the loose who had already killed two people — patrick now being their third. but when monnie went to see his body, she knew there could never be someone capable of doing what had happened to patrick. she knew abuse like the back of her hand, and the stories of witchcraft and satanism weren’t enough for monnie to feel okay about patrick being gone. she wouldn’t accept it.
especially when the stories came out from his friends about him being lifted into the air, crumbling together, only to fall back into the waters of lovers lake. a spot she used to frequent when she was in school but now refuses to go near. and then when the earthquake hit and the news broke out on what was ruled the cause of patricks death ? monnie couldn’t deal. she doesn’t believe that munson kid killed her little brother, but she most definitely doesn’t believe what happened to his body was due to exposure. wrong place wrong time.
monnie is now the only child in the mckinney household. she acts as though his death didnt do anything to her or change her at all, but it did — it changed her family quite a lot too. her mom finally left her dad and he skipped town. monnie hates that it took patricks death for their father to finally leave.
after the earthquake and when the town started to settle did monnie settle, too. she couldn’t leave hawkins now — not when her brother was buried here and not when she didn’t have answers. instead, monnie restarted up the lovelace lingerie at the mall, becoming the new owner of the establishment. and then she bought a small house to fit her needs just perfectly.
still a wild bitch, monnie is being as true to herself as possible, while also trying to not let patrick’s death influence her life too much. something she’s already failing at.

Year-end roundup of theater I saw in 2023:
I saw a lot this year (29 unique shows with a couple of repeats). Part of the reason is probably that I spent money on tickets more freely because I was working a lot more than usual.
Notes or links to separate posts below:
Mean Girls (tour; Pantages) – The strengths are in the original movie material and added character development, while the music is just enough to support the story. Fun, though not sure I'd call it good.
Topdog/Underdog (Broadway) – Fantastic performances from both Corey Hawkins and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. Not particularly interested in con artist/gambler storylines but it fit the themes.
A Strange Loop (Broadway) – Amazing, totally get why it won Best Musical. Viewing experience was enhanced by a responsive audience. I'm excited to see it in LA and crossing my fingers that it gets a decent reception.
Kimberly Akimbo (Broadway) – Hadn't read much about it and was unprepared for how funny it was and how strong the cast was across the board. Favorite little absurdity was how the show choir kids are slowly drawn into Debra's scheme. The cast recording captures a decent part of the humor and was my most-played album in 2023.
Merrily We Roll Along (Off-Broadway) – Not sure I can imagine a better casting for Franklin Shepard than Jonathan Groff.
Wicked (Broadway) – Hadn't seen it in over a decade and felt like revisiting. It was fine; Elphaba and Fiyero seemed to have good chemistry.
Leopoldstadt (Broadway) – If I had the time and money I would just follow Caissie Levy and Brandon Uranowitz around to see whatever they are in. In a 2+ hour show with no intermission I never got bored.
Frozen (tour; Segerstrom) – Had previously seen this pre-pandemic so most of the cast had changed, though Caroline Bowman was still Elsa and was good. A number of the new cast seemed very young.
The Secret Garden (Ahmanson)
Kristina Wong, Sweatshop Overlord (Kirk Douglas)
The Lonely Few (2x) (Geffen Playhouse)
Sunday in the Park with George (Pasadena Playhouse) – First time I’ve ever seen this show (or listened to the music with any level of attention), and while I enjoyed it for the most part—particularly Act 1—I really struggled to care about modern George’s professional and personal difficulties in creating his art. I did like the music and can’t say I was ever bored, but in the end I was (to my surprise) thoroughly unmoved. One notable thing was that the sound in the theater was great. Everything was remarkably clear and I could understand all of the rapid-fire lyrics very well considering I was not very familiar with the music.
Twilight: Los Angeles 1992 (Mark Taper Forum) – Staged with multiple actors; unfortunately I don't remember much about it as I did not take any notes.
1776 (2x)
Kiss of the Spider Woman (A Noise Within) – The play, not the musical. Enjoyed it, thought Molina in particular was well performed.
Six (tour, Pantages) – Had listened to the studio cast recording and enjoyed it but the songs do tend to work better with the little bit of context provided by the show.
A Little Night Music (Pasadena Playhouse) – Another first-time Sondheim show for me; I liked the music (more so than Sunday in the Park With George), acting was strong, but I had difficulty caring much about the interpersonal drama.
A Soldier's Play (tour, Ahmanson) – Didn't take notes afterward; mostly I remember that Norm Lewis's speaking voice is startlingly resonant.
Tina (tour, Pantages) – Saw this only a few weeks after her death; the Playbill cover had been redesigned to acknowledge it and I think the cast and audience were still feeling that impact. It was pretty good for a straight-ahead biographical jukebox musical.
A Transparent Musical
Into the Woods
Beetlejuice
Les Misérables (tour, Pantages) – Heard the latest tour cast was really good, and it was; it hit the emotional beats well. Particularly liked Fantine (here's a local morning-show performance of "I Dreamed a Dream"), Javert, and Valjean, actually liked Gavroche for a change, and this production got rid of a character direction I absolutely hated (Grantaire's melodramatic wail after the "Little People" reprise).
Heroes of the Fourth Turning
Peter Pan Goes Wrong (Ahmanson) – Entertaining and funny though didn't quite hit my sense of humor dead on.
Here Lies Love (Broadway) – Was really glad to have the opportunity to see this because I missed the original production 10 years ago and regretted it. Sat in the front mezzanine which seemed just fine and provided an overall good view of the action in almost every direction. Particularly liked Conrad Ricamora (very charismatic) as Ninoy Aquino and Jose Llana as Marcos. Staging, audience participation, projections, etc. were essential to communicating the message of the show. I like the music and have the original cast recording but it would be very easy to misunderstand the tone from only listening to the recording.
The Sound Inside (Pasadena Playhouse) – Saw this in the middle of being swamped at work so my memory of this is a bit sparse. I remember being uncertain of how to react at the end of the show (same for the audience I was in) but thinking about it afterward the ideas and themes came together more clearly.
A Christmas Story (Ahmanson) – A pleasant and family-friendly show; lots of kids in the cast. Have never seen the movie. There were some high points (e.g. the big tap number featuring Miss Shields and a bunch of children singing "You'll Shoot Your Eye Out" as Prohibition-era gangsters and flappers) but I was bored for a good portion of the show. The portrayal of motherhood is very traditional.
MJ the Musical (tour; Pantages) – Was wondering how Lynn Nottage would handle the book. At first the "in rehearsal for the Dangerous tour" setup seemed like an interesting framing, but ultimately I don't think it went anywhere interesting dramatically or emotionally, or communicated much that wasn't already known even to non-Michael Jackson fans. The part from the Tony Awards performance is the high point of the show IMO.

Red Turbo Ranger: Frank's personality evolved into the Red Geo Ranger (also known as Geo Ranger V). His character became the first Red Turbo Ranger in Power Rangers Turbo the following year. Frank and his co-stars Johnny Yong Bosch, Nakia Burris and Katherine Sutherland were replaced as they decided to leave the cast mid-season. After leaving the show in 1997, Frank returned to Power Rangers in 2002 as Red Geo Ranger Austin St. John. Black Ranger: Jason later starred as the Black Dino Ranger in Power Rangers Dino Thunder in 2004. Frank always appeared as the Black Dino Ranger, while wearing long sleeves to hide the tattoos on his arms. The same applies to "Forever Red" by "Forever Red". For Douglas Sloan, playing the Black Dino Ranger was a plus. Saban and Disney are "the same thing, they're cheap," he joked, adding that he was pleased with the Dino Thunder production team. Green Ranger: In the season finale of Power Rangers Super Megaforce, Frank returned as Tommy Oliver, who served as the episode's Green Ranger. Frank expressed interest in creating a standalone Green Ranger series. Along with fellow Power Rangers actor Amy Jo Johnson, Frank appeared as a resident of Angel Grove in the 2017 film Power Rangers. He reprized his role as Tommy in episode 10 of Power Rangers Super Ninja Steel in 2018 for the 25th anniversary of Power Rangers. Frank announced that he will retire from franchise in 2022. Velawal in the sun super power beat down. On November 7, 2013, in "Super Power Beat Down", Frank fought Mortal Kombat's Scorpion as the White Ranger. On May 5, 2015, he made his second appearance as the Green Ranger in "Super Power Beat Down" and battled Ryu from Street Fighter. Following the popularity of the "Super Power Beatdown" series, Bat in the Sun began developing a web-based reality show. Bad in the Sun began production of Frank's web reality series “My Morphing Life”. Season 2 of the show premiered in 2015. Also read: How did DJ Sumbody die? Cause of death revealed Legend of the White Dragon, New Era: In 2020, the movie Legend of the White Dragon debuted on Kickstarter. It could be a fan film or a miniseries. As a result of its success and enthusiasm it was expanded into a full-length film. Former Power Rangers actors Frank, Jason Fant and Ciara Hannah appear in the film. Other cast members include Mark Dagaskos, Michael Madsen, Andrew Byron of The Bachelor and Jenna Frank. It will be released in 2023. Martial Arts and Fighting: With his knowledge of various martial arts including Shtkan, Wad-ry, Taekwondo, Judo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, Wing Chun, Jeet Kune Do, Aikido, Frank compiled and adapted the most effective techniques. His personal philosophies later created his own variation of American Karate, "Toso Kune Do." He was inducted into the World Karate Union Hall of Fame on June 28, 2003. On February 29, 2008, Frank appeared at the Arnold Classic in Columbus, Ohio. Mixed Martial Arts: Frank officially confirmed his deal with SuckerPunch Entertainment, a sports marketing and management company. Focused on mixed martial arts. UFC lightweight Melvin Gillard began his training with UFC lightweight Melvin Gillard. Frank made his highly anticipated MMA debut for the United States Amateur Combat Association at the company's first event, "Lonestar Beatdown: Houston". He defeated Jonathan "The Mack Truck" Mack in the opening round by omoplata submission. On February 19 in Arlington, Texas, Frank competed in his second match at Lonestar Beatdown: Dallas. His opponent, Chris Rose, entered the arena wearing a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles outfit. KO'd in round 1 by Rose Frank (strikes). He competed in the Cage Amateur Association's “Cage Rage 7” on May 8, 2010, at the State Farm Arena in Hidalgo, Texas, representing Texas Rage. His competition was James Willis. With a rising knee, Frank dropped Willis in the first round after 23 seconds. Read the full article

Chapter 1
November 5, 1983
She sat in the bay window, her back against the wall her knees bent as her chestnut irises scanned the pages of her new novel. Rain droplets raced down the cold glass of the window, leaving a gloomy air around her. On any other day, Claire would be dressed in her usual jeans and jacket out in the backyard shooting countless arrows into the handmade target that she spent her spring break crafting. It was her one true happy place.
Feeling the soft edge of the fletching on her cheek, holding a drawn bow with a firm controlled grasp. Control. As long as she had her bow she had control. Control of her actions, her mind…her feelings. When she was without her bow, her mind seemed to wander to darker places than it needed. Her emotions tended to bubble over causing her to panic and feel unnerved by everything around her. Her actions became impulsive and chaotic. With her bow she could breathe, something she hasn’t been able to do well since she lost the first person in her life. Her father.
She didn’t know him well, as she was only 4 when he died but she still remembered the small things he did with her. Like reading to her, or even singing to her. She could remember his deep voice as he sang, which her mom said always made him sound like Elvis. She remembered how he would pick her up and dance with her and her mom telling them that they were the two most beautiful people in his life. Claire would giggle and hug him as her mom blushed with a bright loving smile on her face. She also remembers the day he had to leave. He had kneeled down in front of her tiny confused body, with tears in his deep brown eyes. Something she got from him. He had placed a kiss on her forehead and told her that no matter what happened that she was his princess and she had to help the queen take care of the castle while he was gone. He had hugged her and whispered an ‘I love you’ into her ear.
That was the last time she ever saw him. Her mom was broken on that day, she had lost a big piece of her heart. Claire had also lost a piece of herself that day, although she didn’t understand it until the day she had also lost her mother. The second person in her life. An uncurable monster had stolen yet another important person from her. On that day, Claire began to become lost. Out of control, scared and angry. Mostly at the world. Yet, there was always a tiny dark voice in the back of her mind that told her that they were taken because of her. No matter how untrue it was, she couldn’t help but believe it.
Her Uncle Johnny had immediately shot down any of those dark thoughts in her head. He had come into her room one afternoon, a smile on his face as he told her he had a surprise for her. Claire had been confused, she hadn’t done anything to deserve a gift. On that day, her uncle introduced her to archery. Although he had used it to hunt, he thought it would be good for her to have a hobby. A hobby that required extreme discipline and control.
“With Archery you learn how to focus and breathe, you learn control.” He had taught her everything he knew, and from that day on it was the only thing that kept her sane. Everything was good after that. She had learned to breathe. She had learned to smile again. Claire would spend her weekends in the woods shooting her bow. When she was 10 her rich neighbor taught her how to ride a horse. She had used it as an opportunity to teach herself a new skill. Hitting a moving target.
The phone ringing beside her broke her out of her train of thought, pulling her attention away from the book she had stopped reading about 20 minutes ago. She grabbed the phone, pulling the cord taut as she answered.
“Douglas residence.”
“Oh hey, Claire, it’s Barbara I was wondering if you wanted to go shopping me and Nancy, she keeps obsessing over finding a top to wear for Steve.” Barbara chimed through the line, a hint of annoyance to her voice at the mention of Nancy Wheeler’s new boyfriend. Steve Harrington was far from the ideal human. He was rude and a bit of a playboy. He made Claire want to rip her hair out. Not to mention his friends were both a bunch of stuck-up assholes.
“Do I have to?”
“No, but I would like for you to come.” Claire smiled at this. Although Nancy seemed nice, and she was, she had a tendency to make everything revolve around her. Granted Claire hadn’t known her as long as Barb had, but she still had a lot to learn about the girl that everyone seemed to think was perfect. Barb on the other hand only cared about others. She had been the one to ask Claire if she wanted to be their friend the day that she became a new face in Hawkins Indiana. Claire wasn’t really looking for friends, but she was glad to have them.
“Fine, are you driving?” Claire hated being in a car, and she sure as hell refused to drive one.
“Of course.”
“Okay, I’ll be ready in 10,” Claire stated. She wasn’t a fan of going out, especially not with friends, she much preferred to be alone. Claire got up from the bench stretching her stiff muscles with a small groan. She trudged to her bedroom heading straight to the closet. Claire thought for a moment, her finger tapping the tip of her nose as she contemplated what to wear. Usually it wasn’t a hard decision, Claire normally planned her outfits ahead of time, but she hadn’t planned to leave the house today. With a loud sigh she grabbed a pair of light denim jeans, a teal and cream stripped sweater and her black high-top converse.
“Why am I going again?” She questioned herself as she pulled on the jeans with a huff. She shuffled into the sweater, tucking the front of it slightly under the waistband. She put her shoes on tying the laces before heading to the bathroom. Claire usually left her long curly dark hair alone. Allowing it to fall naturally over her shoulders. She didn’t really bother with make up either, only choosing to add a little mascara to her lashes. She didn’t like being in the spot light, so why bother with her appearance.
A loud car horn sounded from outside, breaking Claire from her mirror staring contest, she spayed on a simple perfume before running back to her bedroom, to grab her bag and her walkman. She swiped one of the many mixtapes off of her bookshelf as she left her room.
Her Aunt was sitting at the dinning table sipping on a cup of coffee, solving a crossword puzzle from the paper. Claire looked over her Aunts shoulder at the last riddle on the page. I am so simple, that I can only point, yet I guide men all over the world. Claire smiled as she watched her aunt rack her brain for the answer.
“It’s a compass, auntie.” Claire abruptly spoke, causing her aunt to jump only slightly. Claire laughed as she gave her aunt a quick kiss on the cheek.
“Oh Claire, I hate when you do that,” Her aunt grumbled as he scribbled down the answer to the puzzle.
“Do what? Solving the puzzle or scaring you?” Claire smiled at her aunts grumpy face, giggling slightly as she shot Claire a glare.
“Both, now where might you be going?”
“With Barb and Nancy, shopping, is that okay?” Claire looked for approval however she only hoped that her aunt would say no. But to her dismay, she only agreed, telling her to be home by eight. Claire nodded, heading to the front door. She grabbed her rain coat slipping it on and running out the door to Barbara’s car. She swung open the door to the backseat climbing in quickly to avoid the rain.  Barb watched her from the driver’s seat, with a smile.
“Hey, sorry I dragged you out of the house in the rain, but you know how persistent Nance is.” Barbara apologised, something she did often when things seemed to inconvenience other people. Something she did on Nancy’s behalf.
“Barb, it’s okay, although I would have preferred to stay home reading my book.”  Barbara laughed at Claire’s obvious disapproval of this particular outing, shifting the car back in reverse. Claire sat in the middle of the back seat buckled in tightly as she loaded her tape of choice into her walkman. She always did this. Distracting herself from her obvious fear of moving vehicles. Ever since the crash, Claire had anxiety when being in a car with anyone. So, she chose to block it out. It was the other thing that kept her mind at ease when she didn’t have her bow.
The Wheeler house came into view, and Nancy came running out of her house. When the door swung open Claire removed her headphones, only to hear her sigh of frustration. Barb and Claire greeted her with a smile as she slipped into the seat.
“Claire, I didn’t think you would want to come.” Nancy gave a look to Barb as if to ask why she was there. This elicited an eye roll from Claire. She knew that Nancy wasn’t really a fan of her, mostly because Claire had a tendency to be a smart ass, but also because she didn’t really know Claire that well. Claire was a mystery to her, she was a mystery to everyone. She wasn’t a fan of opening up to people. Spilling her heart out meant caring for people and she had lost too many people that she cared about.
“I only came because Barb begged me, as much as I don’t like steve, shopping might be fun.” At this Nancy smiled, claire however knew it was only because she mentioned the boy who had grabbed her undivided attention. Barbara shook her head at the girl beside her before getting back on the road to head into town.
***
“What about this?” Nancy held up a top that was a bit revealing. It was lavender with an intricate lace pattern on the back. The sleeves were long but it was obvious that they were meant to sit off the shoulders. Claire and Barbara gave each other a look giggling at her, innocent face. Claire snatched the top from her hands placing it back on the rack.
“Sorry Nance, but you are not Carol,” Claire joked, spinning the girl around by her shoulders and pushing her towards another clothing rack. Nancy laughed, feigning offense looking back at her two friends. Barbara looked shocked at Claire’s comment but laughed all the same. The three continued to search the boutique, Barb and Claire both finding things that they liked as well. As Claire ran her fingers over the soft cotton of a graphic T-shirt, Barbara struck a conversion with her.
“Do you think he actually likes her?” Barbara seemed hurt by the idea that she might lose her best friend to an idiot like Steve Harrington. Even though Claire hadn’t been in Hawkins for very long, she knew of the “King Steve” reputation that he boasted in. She couldn’t help to worry about Nancy, even if the girl didn’t seem to enjoy her company. However, Nancy was smart she could make her own decisions and judgements about the resident playboy.
“I don’t know, maybe.” Claire replied pulling a shirt from the rack, inspecting the design. Claire eyed the taller girl to her right with curiosity. One thing Claire had learned over the years was to read people’s body language, and looking at Barb it was obvious something was bothering the red head.
“Why do you look like that?” Claire hadn’t meant for it to sound rude but it did. Barb whipped her head around raising an eyebrow at Claire.
“Look like what?”
“I don’t know like you lost your best friend, Nancy may be dating the school douche bag, but she won’t leave you behind.” Claire truly meant the words she spoke, although it was hard to speak for the other girl whom she had only known for about 7 months.
“I hope you’re right.” Barb whispered looking down at her hands. Claire couldn’t agree more.
“Hey, guys what about this one?” Nancy skipped over with a cute white and read sweater. It was low cut but not too revealing. Claire and Barb nodded with smiles on their faces, causing Nancy to giggle in happiness. The girls paid for their items and headed home. Barb dropped off Nancy first and then continued her way to Claire’s house. The rain had stopped, easing a bit of Claire’s anxiety. The two sat in silence aside from the music playing on Claire’s walkman.
Claire’s house came into view and she began putting away her walkman, alerting Barb.
“I had fun today, we should all do it again sometime.” Barbara smiled at Claire, who only nodded with a small smile.
“Yeah maybe,” Claire unbuckled the seatbelt as barbara parked the car, going to open the door.
“Hey Claire, you know… you know you can talk to me right. I’m your friend and I want you to trust me.” This took Claire by surprise, she was unsure of what prompted this sudden outburst of friendship, but she appreciated it none the less.
“Yeah I know, thanks Barb.” Claire smiled a warm smile, finally climbing out the car and heading into the house. Truth be told, neither Barbara or Nancy really knew much about her, other than the fact that she lived with her aunt, and she was into archery, music and books. She didn’t talk much and when she did it was usually with sarcasm.
A curly headed little boy had caught claire’s attention as she walked up the front steps. His bushy hair was pushed down by a red, white, and blue cap and he shot her a sweet gummy grin. The Henderson boy. He was always so sweet and curious about his new really pretty neighbor. He liked to watch her shoot her bow, and even got excited enough to talk to her about it. He thought that she was cool and even thought to ask if she wanted to play dungeons and dragons with his friends. Claire found the boy sweet and kinda funny with his references to lord of the rings and the hobbit when he first saw her shoot her bow and hit dead center in a target.
“Hi Claire!” Dustin waved as he walked his bike down his drive way. Claire smiled at the younger boy saluting him as he road off down the road. She shook her head as the sound of him yelling into his walkie faded in the cold fall air. She sigh as she walked back into the house the looming feeling a exhaustion suddenly washing over her. She had fun shopping with the girls, laughing and gossiping. It was a feeling she missed from back home.
After the accident, Claire had shut down, she pushed people away. However, it didn’t take much considering the people around her weren’t really her friends. They had all ditched her the day she got into the accident, not even bothering to come see her in the hospital. So, she stuck to herself. Until, Barbara Holland and her were assigned partners for a history project. She had gotten to know the quiet girl and decided what would be the harm in trying to find friends in this new small town.
However, she wasn’t sure why she agreed, and she certainly had no clue how long it would last.

Earlier that morning, Jim had spied the first grey hair in Ross’ dark-brown mane as they lay in bed, prolonging the inevitable.
Still, with a heavy heart, Jim had tried to persuade Ross to stay.
“You’ve been gone a lot this year - and the weather could turn any day, we haven’t had a proper snowstorm yet. It’s just a matter of time-“
“It will hold.” Ross’ voice sounded rough, as if he’d just woken up, but they both knew he’d hardly slept during the hunting season. “I’ll only stay a week and then I’ll be done, I promise.”
Jim sighed and tried a different line of approach, knowing it’d be just as futile. “Zacky told me again he’s barely keeping up. The Christmas sales are booming, you’re needed here.”
Ross bit his lip. “He can handle it. He has help this year too, I made sure of it.”
Yes, Ross had made sure. He’d hired an assistant for his assistant. So he could disappear into the woods for days on end, searching for…
A ghost.
===
Ross kissed Jim by the jeep’s door, fleetingly, guilt in the shadows on his face.
“I’ll be back before you know it,” he said, casting an eye at the high, scattered clouds on the horizon. The forecast wasn’t bad per se, but at this time of year, it could change at the drop of a hat.
“Don’t take any risks,” Jim said, as emphatically as he dared. Ross always told Jim roughly where he’d be going, but that could be as tentative as the forecast – a chance sighting, a marked tree, or a single track on the ground could change Ross’ course and render any plan futile.
Ross tossed his rifle on the passenger seat and looked Jim in the eye then. He did, Jim had to admit, look truly rueful.
“I love you.”
It was almost an apology, an admission on Ross’ part that he was aware of the strain his obsession was placing on their relationship.
“I love you too,” Jim replied, his throat full.
He wasn’t sure why moments like this were never enough for Ross to stay.
It was complicated. And Jim did understand. He just wasn’t sure if this could ever end well, if Ross could ever let the ghosts of the past rest.
He watched him drive off, a heavy weight settling over his stomach.
===
The eight-foot Douglas fir, tall and proud in the center of their timber house’s living room, had been decorated a few weeks ago. Jim liked to do it early and keep the tree for as long as possible, as if the twinkly lights and ornaments could erase the memories of his own miserable Christmases past. Or his present misery, for that matter - he had put up the ornaments alone again this year, though they’d chosen the tree together at least. Ross had later gushed about Jim’s knack for decorating and they’d sipped whiskey and made out on the shaggy rug in front of the tree.
Now the fir glinted there festively in a valiant attempt to project cheer throughout a lonely house. There were presents underneath its soft-green branches, ten or so wrapped boxes they’d each placed there when the other wasn’t looking.
This would be their sixth Christmas together, third in the house they shared. And each time, Ross had stopped scouring the woods closer to Christmas, last year coming home just four days before.
When would he be back this year?
As Jim got ready for work, he tried to push the thought from his mind.
A part of him still hoped Ross would one day magically get over this and stop chasing ghosts in the forests and high mountain meadows
But each year, that hope had gotten smaller and smaller.
===
A week passed and grew into eight days, then nine.
On the tenth day, Jim couldn’t take it anymore. After a meeting with the logging company, he called his boss and requested an extra two days off before the holidays for an urgent matter. His boss knew Ross, had known his father, and didn’t ask any questions.
Jim stopped by downtown, by Ross’ workshop tucked in an alley off the main street. On the way, he passed a couple in the street – bundled up in their winter coziest, they were strolling along, peeking into the festively adorned shop windows, sipping on hot chocolate. A small-town Christmas cliché, he knew, but Jim couldn’t lie to himself – he craved it. With Ross.
Glancing past the couple, Jim spotted craft jewelry from a gifted local artisan in the windows’ display, and next to it a few items from Ross’ workshop. They sold well, the primitive but elegant designs popular with the tourists and townsfolk alike.
Jim looked away, turned the corner into the alley.
Zacky paused his work and assured Jim that the worst in the workshop was behind them, and that the assistant had held up well enough. They were both overworked but the present-buying frenzy was finally waning, with only the late shoppers out on the ‘hunt’. Jim smiled but the word Zacky had chosen resonated with the sense of disquiet in him.
===
Ross was still not back when Jim returned.
Just the tree, lights blinking bright and cheerful.
The idea of Christmas alone made his stomach clench. Goddamit, Ross-
Supplies already packed, he set out after him. There were hunting stands placed throughout the woods and Jim knew which Ross planned on using once he’d parked his jeep at the end of the last road. The stands offered shelter and a good view – exactly what Ross needed.
He walked until nightfall and slept in one of the stands the first night. It was nippy but bearable. In the darkness, he lay there, staring at the rough-built roof, thinking of how he and Ross had met, the haunted look Ross had carried about him then. It had gradually receded now as years passed, but it reemerged full force when fall arrived, and it seemed to reach deeper every year.
Jim thought back to their happy times, the in-between times. The year Ross had come back in springtime, under a pretext but really to see Jim. The first time they’d shared a bed till morning. The summer Ross opened his workshop downtown and moved into Jim’s small timber house.
The endless chats by the fireplace, long into the night, shadows and light dancing on the exposed wood beams of Jim’s – and now Ross’ – home.
But somewhere deep inside, Jim had always wondered if Ross’ main motivation to stay was the two of them or if it had been more for the answers Ross thought the woods outside the town held.
And if not finding them might one day drive Ross away.
===
He hiked on. The day bordering on frigid, but it was beautiful. As Jim went, he ticked of the hunting stands he’d passed, until only two were left on the route. Jim was a fast walker, and he’d made time to appraise the trees he passed as he went. The dominant beeches with their pale, sturdy trunks. The solitary birches, the quaking clusters of aspens. He noted broken tree limbs from past winter storms, tell-tale signs of drying out and disease, evidence of animal damage. These trees were technically still his responsibility as the area’s conservationist, but here the woods mostly took care of themselves and even dead trees had value for the ecosystem. There was usually no need to interfere.
He catalogued a few areas in his mind to check again in the spring and kept walking. The next hunting stand was empty – Jim’s heart sped up as he measured how much daylight he had left against the distance to the last one stand. He hurried on, not wanting so spend the night out in the open. Ross better be at that last stand, or Jim didn’t know where else to search. If Ross had decided to come back a different way, they’d completely miss each other. But even for Ross, that would be a bit reckless. Though not impossible. If he’d spotted what he’d been hoping all these years, though – he’d follow, Jim was sure of it.
When the sun had all but disappeared into the trees to Jim’s left, he finally saw the last wooden structure up ahead, across a grassy field that sloped up to a new stretch of the forest. Jim could just barely make out its outline against the dark woods and it seemed alone and undisturbed - but then something stirred inside. The bright blue of Ross’ jacket.
A long-held weight fell off Jim’s shoulders. Hands bracketing his mouth, he called out - and a few minutes later he was standing face to face with a wide-eyed, breathless Ross. Ross that smelled exactly like Jim would expect after more than a week out in nature – musk and sweat mixed with pine needles and earth. Jim was well used to that particular mix by now: it was what Ross smelled like whenever he returned home. Mostly, it was comforting.
“Jim,” Ross said. He had a subdued, unhappy look about him – but he also seemed calmer than when he’d left. “Has it been –“
“Ten days, and you promised only a week,” Jim said, keeping his voice level. “I was worried.”
Ross lowered his head, shadows of guilt returning. “I know – I… lost track.” Then he looked up again and past Jim, his eyes clearer once more. “You hiked, all the way here… For me?”
He seemed touched, and Jim wanted to shake him and embrace him at the same time.
“Why else?” he replied. “I see trees at work every day.” He sighed. “When were you going to come back? The weather is supposed to turn bad on Christmas Eve – that’s in two days.”
He wanted to add: “Why are you doing this to me?” but he refrained, maybe out of sheer relief of finding Ross. Maybe because he knew this didn’t have much to do with himself, that Ross was, well and simply put, torn deep inside.
Ross looked around, though there was not much to see now except for the outline of the forest and the pale sliver of the Moon rising in the East. “I was going to start back soon. I was hoping I’d make it back by Christmas - I wouldn’t leave you to spend it alone.”
He knew why Jim was so hung up on the holidays, why he hated spending them alone. Growing up poor and fatherless, Jim’s mother broken by it until she too passed away: it had been a bleak childhood and Jim overcompensated for it these days with countless lights and decorations everywhere, with food.
Ross had been there for him for a while now, fulfilling that need for harmony and security, but they both still seemed to be dragging their own past behind them.
He hoped it wouldn’t pull them apart.
===
They spent the night cramped on the floor of the hunting stand, huddled each in his own sleeping bag. Jim woke at dawn and found Ross already up, staring wistfully out at the forest edge through the gap cut between the boards. His rifle was propped in the corner, not loaded.
Jim frowned. Hunting season was technically over, but Ross was usually ready, moment’s notice all he would afford himself in case his quarry appeared.
“I’m sorry you’ve had no luck again this year,” Jim said quietly.
Ross shrugged. He was toying with something in his hand – Jim recognized it by its unmistakable glint. It was a golden bullet – the one found loaded in Ross’ father’s rifle during his last hunt.
The fated hunt from which the famous hunter Joshua Poldark hadn’t returned. The hunt that had taken place right here, in these very woods.
“I don’t even know why I keep coming here - it’s not like it will bring him back.” Ross looked down at the bullet, then up at Jim. “I thought if I’d find what he’d found, if I’d proved that what he’d seen had been real…”
Jim bit his lip.
The fabled, majestic deer rumored to live around here but never confirmed. A fifty pointer, some claimed – including Ross’ dad who had written about in his last journal, the one he’d kept during that fated hunt.
Not many people believed such a magnificent buck could be real, though; they’d thought Joshua Poldark had seen things. Maybe after he’d had the fall that had ultimately killed him, not far from here. His final scribbles had been hard to read…
Ross had believed. And yet the buck remained elusive, to Ross and everyone else.
And Ross was the only one who was still trying to prove it could exist – as if it would somehow clear his father’s name. As if his death would then be easier to bear.
===
The hike back was quiet. Ross was subdued and Jim didn’t press him: he was watching for signs of bad weather. The clouds gathering ahead of them worried him.
Ross worried him as well. But first they had to get home.
===
The storm started when they were two miles from their vehicles, and Jim followed the lights of Ross’ jeep home through the raging elements. Stumbling into the hallway of their house, slamming the door shut on the wild winter outside, they threw off their wet and half-frozen clothes and climbed straight into a hot shower.
“I’m sorry,” Ross said into Jim’s hair as he massaged shampoo into his scalp. “I risked both of our lives because… because of a ghost.”
“I know you need closure,” Jim said, turning around to face him. “But maybe there isn’t any. Maybe some things are just don’t have answers.” He took a deep breath. “I can help you bear it if you let me. But you can’t keep on living in the past, Ross. I need you here, in the present.”
Ross said nothing, but he leaned into Jim and held on to him, until they were both warm again.
===
The town looked peaceful under fresh snow the next day, but Jim felt more jittery than ever. It was Christmas Eve, and dusk was slowly rolling in. They’d cleaned up their gear the night before and in the morning, made breakfast together, though Ross had remained mostly quiet.
Then he left on an errand, and he still hadn’t returned.
Jim swore to himself he wouldn’t go looking for him again. Wherever he was now, Ross would have to sort himself out, no matter what it would mean for the two of them. For Jim.
It was dark out and the fish lay in a coat of breadcrumbs on the counter when the front door clicked open. The sound of Ross’ boots shaking off snow reached Jim’s ears; a draft snaked in, teasing out goosebumps on the skin of Jim’s calves.
“Hey – sorry I’m late. I’ll help you in a minute.” Ross walked in, boot-free, all purposeful. He smelled different now as Jim lifted his head automatically to receive a kiss: clean-shaven and sharp like smoke. Had he been at the workshop, tying things up after his last absence?
“Alright.” Jim smiled and busied himself with a frying pan and oil, a few spices from the cabinet. The potatoes were nearly done, judging by the aroma emanating from the oven.
Behind his back, Jim could hear footsteps retreat momentarily and approach again. Then Ross was there, taking the utensils from Jim’s hand. “I’ll finish here – you’ve done enough.”
Jim went and poured them both a drink. There was something different about Ross, Jim thought, but he couldn’t quite put his finger on what.
===
Candlelight reflected in their wine glasses as they ate. Easy chatter passed back and forth, but Jim couldn’t miss how once in a while, Ross would steal furtive glances at Jim, at the tree, the fire. Was he still weighted down by guilt? Had he come to some decision while out – wherever it was he’d been all day?
They finished and cleared the table. Ross went to stand by the tree, sipping on his drink, and it was then that Jim noticed a new gift underneath it, wrapped in purple paper and adorned with a gold ribbon.
He looked at Ross questioningly, and Ross bent down to retrieve it, handing it to Jim with an almost sheepish expression.
“I – this is why I was out today.”
Jim accepted it, the paper smooth in his hands. Carefully, he unwrapped it. The flat box was hiding another, smaller box, and this one was velvet-cushioned inside. Jim caught a glint of familiar gold, but this object was different than the one he’d seen just two days before in a hunting stand, in Ross’ restless fingers; this one was a perfectly round golden band.
“Ross…” Jim breathed.
Ross burst into an anxious explanation. “You know the jeweler on the main street - Jinny? She came in for me today and melted the golden bullet in order to make this.” He paused, and then gently took the small box from Jim’s hands, picking up the ring.
“I realized you were right. I can’t keep on chasing ghosts and rumors. I need to live in the here and now. With you.”
Jim stared at him, speechless. Cautious happiness blossomed in his chest, and the symbolism of what Ross was giving him wasn’t lost on him.
“If that’s what you want as well?” Ross added, hesitant now. “I know I have been… absent, and neglectful of our relationship. But I’m ready to leave the past where it belongs. I said a final goodbye to my father out there, and I’m going to sell my rifle. I’m done.”
“Ross – “ Jim searched his face, looking to confirm the words in Ross’ eyes. There were no shadows hiding there anymore. “I didn’t expect this, but I – I want this. Want you.”
“Then can I-?” Ross said, holding up the ring.
“Yeah.”
The gold band slid onto Jim’s finger with ease, and they both looked down at it for a moment.
Jim kissed Ross; they settled on the rug in front of the twinkling spruce and didn’t leave its company for hours. Discarded wrapping paper and ribbons soon lay scattered around them, and a while later hastily discarded clothing joined the fray.
Jim noticed a few more gray strands in Ross’ hair as they held onto one another afterward – and he smiled.
There’d be more of them, and he’d be happy to count them. Because now the past was finally resting were it should and it hadn’t pulled them apart.
The future beckoned.

‘Spencer’: Princess Diana Biopic Casts Roles Of Sarah Ferguson & Diana’s Father John Spencer
EXCLUSIVE: Lady Diana biopic Spencer, starring Kristen Stewart as the former Princess, has cast the supporting roles of Sarah Ferguson, the former wife of Prince Andrew, and Earl Spencer, Diana’s father.
Ferguson, the Duchess of York, will be portrayed by newcomer Olga Hellsing, a Berlin-based German model and actress who is fluent in English.
Earl John Spencer will be played by British-German actor Thomas Douglas, whose career has largely comprised supporting roles in German TV and features, most recently in Beta Film’s German-language historical mini-series Labyrinth Of Peace.
The film focuses on one weekend in the life of Princess Diana, as she spends the Christmas holiday with the royal family at the Sandringham estate in Norfolk, and decides to leave her marriage to Prince Charles.
Royal sisters-in-law Ferguson and Diana had a turbulent and complicated relationship, which was often very close but which soured in Diana’s final years. In her autobiography, Ferguson wrote that 1991—the year before their respective marital separations—“was the year we first put words to the unspeakable idea that had been nudging us in the ribs for some time: that one or both of us might leave the royal family. We burned the phone wires into the night, trading secrets and jokes that no-one else would understand.”
British peer and nobleman John Spencer, the maternal grandfather of Prince William and Prince Harry, was a World War II veteran with close ties to the Royal family. He sat in the House Of Lords from 1975 until he passed away in 1992, the year Diana initially separated from her husband.
The production team behind Spencer yesterday revealed that Poldark star Jack Farthing will portray Charles. Previously announced cast includes Timothy Spall, Sally Hawkins and Sean Harris, though their characters are not yet known. A number of roles are being kept under wraps and Ferguson and John Spencer are likely to be minor characters in the piece.
Filming has been taking place in Germany, but has recently moved to the UK. The production has tapped into funding from Germany so has needed to cast a handful of local actors.
Pic is directed by Pablo Larraín (Jackie) and written by Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders). The film is produced by Juan de Dios Larraín (Jackie) for Fabula Films, Jonas Dornbach and Janine Jackowski (Toni Erdmann) for Komplizen Film and Paul Webster (Atonement) for Shoebox Films.
