what really annoys me about certain games and most anime is that the character designs are made to look cute and appealing to the veiwer and set themselves apart from other shows/games but in doing that they sacrifice subtle character design.
How would that character dress based on their personality and quirks?
that character is lazy? so are they really gonna get up each morning and do that complicated hairstyle each and every day? that person is a fighter so are they really going to have that much hair infront of their eyes during battle? oh that persons devout and demure you really think they would wear such a short skirt and tight shirt with a tiddy window? NO.
in the end you end up with souless barbie dolls that you like dressing up instead of actual people. its a disservice to both the charcater and the veiwer and we should really stop doing that shit.

Made In Dagenham Blog 1
1. What have you completed this week? If rehearsing what scenes did you work on?
This week we worked on the factory scenes with the girls and worked on ‘This is what we want’ and Claires song 'Wossaname’. We spent time blocking the factory girl scenes and developing blocking with our reactions and movement and our movement from the scene into the songs. Other work that was completed was 'Made In Dagenham’ with the boys.
2. What went well with the scenes?
What went well for me personally is my reactions. I felt that me and most people during the blocking of the factory scenesanaged to develop and create more reactions towards Monty and specifically when we are downgraded to an unskilled grade, the reactions was a lot bigger from everyone as factory girls and there was more characterization shown between the different characters. I think what went well is we improved throughout the blocking during the day and took direction well together in the scene and this made the scene have a lot more strength.
3. What didn’t go well with the scenes?
I felt what could’ve gone better when blocking the factory scene was showing our relationships between us all as factory girls. Sometimes I feel the relationships between us as factory girls could be shown better in regards to interaction and eye contact as there is mostly just individual reactions rather than reactions and gestures used towards each other as interaction. For example, I felt that people on the front row need to react more with people on the back row to create the atmosphere of the factory and the relationship  between each of the characters.
4. What do you need to improve for next session?
I need to improve on projecting my line more as I feel I say this too quiet and think that to improve it, it needs to be louder and I need to have more confidence in my accent. I also need to improve on my interaction a bit more with Sandra and Cass when I am sat with them both. To improve on my accent, I will look at cockney accents or look into another Richard Bean play ‘One Man Two Guvnors’ where I could base my accent on a character from there by watching clips on YouTube, If I am not interested in any of the accents from this play I will look at The Only Way Is Essex and pick an accent and way of speaking that best suits my character.
5. What songs/ dances have you worked on?
We have worked on the dance and song 'This Is What We Want’ and worked on the movement and song 'Wossaname’. We spent time blocking and perfecting these scenes and add the transitions from the scene into these songs.
6. What went well?
I felt that blocking went really well during both songs we worked and practiced on. We improved a lot from blocking and the atmosphere and the mood was created more for the songs. There was more added mood from us as characters and it created more of the type of mood we wanted to get across. For example, during rehearsing 'This Is What We Want’ I felt there was a big improvement in the dominance of us as factory girls against Monty, there was more expression used and we showed ourselves as more enthusiastic about what we want and the general message of the song.
7. What didn’t go well?
I felt that during rehearsing 'Wossaname’ that it that there wasn’t enough energy sometimes and that even though we took on blocking and direction well, that there needed to bigger gestures and reactions to Claire and I think of there was more energy towards the scene, this wouldve made overall scene a lot bigger.
8. What do you need to do to improve for the next session?
I think I need to work on my energy more and think more about my movement more within the scene and song 'Wossaname’ Thinking about how my character walks, what gestures my character uses to show my mannerisms and character on stage as I feel that at the moment, I show my character mostly through my expressions and need to work on thinking about my movements more. I think for 'This Is What We Want’ I need to work on becoming more confident with my singing more as I feel this is something I am lacking in my performance and when rehearsing this song.
9. How are you developing your character? : physicality, vocals, characterisation
I feel I am developing my character most through my expression and my reactions to other characters. For example, my tutor explained like I was quite a shy character so therefore when Beryl enters the scene with asking some of the factory girls ’ Are you getting any?’ I put my head down and bury it in the sewing machine hoping she doesnt say it to me, showing body language that my character feels uncomfortable when she is straight up asking other characters this personal questions. I am developing through my expressions towards characters and showing how my characters feels at each point in the scene. Reacting strong to when we are told we have been given an unskilled grade showing clear anger expression and annoyance on my face and when Monty saying 'they work in a pressurised environment’ showing extreme annoyance and show I am irritated by storming offand going to talk to the girls at the back row and saying 'ohhh whatever!’ I show this in my body language walking in a strop which shows my character as mardy and also suggests I play a young characted to my audience, by walking off in a strop.
10. What ideas have you got for your role and the overall performance?
The type of idea I have for my character is that even though I am shy, when my characters opens up she is a very cheeky and very smiley character. For example, for 'Pay Day’ I had the idea of showing my character as quite a cheerful character through this song showing myself as enthusiastic during the dance and for the song to show my character enjoys going out and socializing and having a drink and show I am playing a youthful character. I have recently looked at some 60’s hairstyles and makeup for my character and thought that a high pony tail with a bow would suit my charcater as I want to play her as a girly character. I have also looked at some 60’s makeup and think that a smudged eye look would suit my character and show her appearance well through this look. I have looked at some mini skirts for my character to show myself as a young ans girly character through my appearance.
11.  What techniques have you used in the session? What effect did you use them for?
Reactions. During this lesson when blocking the first two scenes of the girls in the factory, we have worked on reactions. Working on blocking in how we react to characters such as Beryl, Claire, etc and how each reaction will be different depending on what lines are said and to also show the difference in character.
Expressions. When blocking scenes and particularly in Claires song 'Wossaname’ we worked on lot on expressions and how we are reacting to each different verse and what Claire is saying at each point and how we feel towards this and her as a character speaking. We worked on expressions whilst blocking to help create the mood and atmosphere of Claire and to show how our characters see her as a person.
Movement. We worked on movement alot during working for the dance for 'This Is What We Want’ working on all being in time with our movement when moving towards Monty together and circuling around him and practicing this movement to keep in time with eachother as a group.
12.   What feedback did you receive from your director/ peers?
Some of the feedback we recieved was that during 'Wossaname’ we need to include more of a reaction towards Claire speaking up and talking a load of random stuff and have more reaction for different parts of the song.  Individual feedback I recieved is that I need to be more confident and louder when projecting my line and that I need to experiment with it as at the moment I sound the same as the other factory girls and could make my accent sounds more different to show the difference of characters between us all as factory girls.
For feedback 'This Is What We Want’ we recieved feedback that we needed to be a bit more stronger and more in Monty’s face when singing the song rather than just singing we need to direct it more at Monty to show that we want to get the message across to him more. Other feedback in regards to the factory scenes was that we need to have more reactions in between each lines.
13. What did you think of the feedback?
I agreed with the feedback that was given for both songs and the factory scenes. I did feel that we needed to be more direct towards our song to show us as all coming together to get the message across to Monty. I also felt that as blocking through the factory scenes we made the atmosphere of the scene more interesting with us all adding more bigger and vocal reactions and that it improved the scene overalll. For 'Wossaname’ I thought that we needed to interact more and focus on Claire more during her song.
14. What are you going to do in the next rehearsal to improve on the feedback?
Projection. I am going to work on projecting my line more during scene 1 in the factory and see how I can project this line as my character. I will look at different cockney accents to see which one I feel would suit my character so I have picked out an accent different to the one other people use.
Reactions. I am going to look through the script and look at particular lines where I can add a big reaction to as my charcater and show how I feel at particular moments in the factory. Once I have developed and got a better understanding of my character, I will write these on my  script.
