Watch "In the Heat of the Night performed by Ray Charles (1967) Stereo HD 1080p60 Quincy Jones" on YouTube
youtube
One of the very best movies made in the 1960s, winner of five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor. Quincy Jones music director and theme song by Ray Charles. A dramatic time capsule of America when racism announced itself with blaring trumpets instead of dog whistles.
Watch the full movie with commercials but free.

Hər kəsin içində bir qatil var.Deməli bir qrup tibb bacısını ətrafına toplayan Charles K. Hofling “astroten” deyə bir dərmanın çıxdığını və insanlara bu dərmandan 10mq artıq verilərsə, mütləq şəkildə onları öldürəcəyini bildirib. Bir həftə ərzində xəstələrə 10 mq astroten verən tibb bacıları xəstəxananın baş həkimindən gələn mesaj ilə, xəstələri öldürəcəklərini bildikləri halda şprislərə 20 mq astroten qoymağa başlayırlar.Maraqlısı isə xəstəxanada belə bir baş həkimin olmamasıdır.İnsanların əksəriyyəti hakimiyyətdən gələn əmri cinayət kimi qəbul etmir. Çünki məsuliyyət və güc hakimiyyət sahibinə məxsusdur.

1823 July, Mon. 7
9 1/4
11 1/4
Thinking of my letter, then of endearments, till I felt my passions on the alert. Bore this for an hour fancying that I never so well resisted proceeding to self gratification. At last, at nine, my hand slipt down and it was over – My back very sore, but would have no more dressing with ointment – Sponged it well with cold water – Put a dry piece of linen next it and dressed –
Downstairs at 10 1/4 in the new stable to order about its being new-done-up – William Eden and his apprentice slate-pointing the roof within – Charles Howarth, his son, and grandson busy about pulling up the stalls &c.– Came in to breakfast a little before 11 – Then out again – Then at 11 1/2 wrote the above of today –
Wrote a note to Mrs. H[enry] Priestley (Haugh end) which my aunt took to the post, to say I would dine with them on Wednesday and be there about 12
“time enough to draw the cords of acquaintance – I would send a message to Lady Astley of congratulations on the safe arrival &c. &c. but the case admits no messenger but myself, and perhaps tis doubtful whether I myself can mix such uncouth circumstances with the civility I wish – I am glad however your friends are arrived quite well; and tho’ ‘tired with our tremendous hills, yet pleased with our country that lifts its head so loftily, and by starts so beautifully beneath our healthful sky’”
compliments &c. and conclusion –
In the stable a little again – Then came upstairs and read chapters 27, 28, 29 libro i. Herodotus and all Larcher’s Translation and notes – George had been for Jackman called at Lightcliffe and brought 2 books lent me by Mr. W[illiam] P[riestley]–
Went into the stable to speak to Jackman – Had all the pavement pulled up, the stalls only to fall one inch per yard instead of 2 1/3 inch – Then in the room talking to my uncle, then in the stable again came upstairs at 5 10/60, and till 6, skimming over Larcher’s first 66 notes on book 1 Herodotus, and wrote the last 9 lines of today –
In the evening read the first 123 pages of the Experimental Farmer, 1 of the books lent me by Mr. W[illiam] P[riestley]. The other book is “the complete grazier by a Linconshire Grazier.” –
A few drops of rain between 11 and 12 this morning showery in the latter part of the afternoon and in the evening – Barometer 3 1/2 degrees below changeable Fahrenheit 56 1/2º at 9 1/4 p.m. – Came upstairs at 10 35/60 – E [three dots, treating venereal complaint] O [two dots, signifying middling discharge].
Four little drops very yellow with a gree[n]ish  tinge. As yet I certainly do not perceive any good done. The colour deeper tonight than it has been for some time. Bathed my back with urine with my hand, having first sponged it with cold water and put a little tallow on. My back very sore –

I was tagged for the "10 favorite characters" meme, and I have decided to cheat-- 10 men and 10 women, because... I can, and I want to. Also, these aren't ranked, just listed in the order I think of them. Also also, just because a character appears on this list, does not mean I think they're 100% good and endorse their actions. (This falls under the umbrella of 'nuance', sub-category 'critical thinking'.) Thanks to @aandrezel; others, play along if you wish!

1. Jane Eyre, Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte

Och, Kaplan, we barely knew ye... Lt. Kaplan was the lead security guard in "The Apple," Somehow despite both being in front leading the way at some points, and guarding the rear in others, he manages to survive until Spock notices they are being followed. At that point, Kirk has Kaplan circle around toward the back of where they are standing. And this is when....
Tumblr media
Lt. Kaplan becomes Krispy Kaplan and the second redshirt to die in the episode. Kirk bemoans the fact that he knew Kaplan’s family after they find the third dead redshirt (Mallory) and realizes he should have had the crew beamed back up at the first sign of trouble. Not that his realization helps Kaplan any now that he's a heap of ashes. And so we bid adieu to this fine young man in red. But wait....
Tumblr media
Someone who looks like Kaplan, but isn’t, shows up in “And The Children Shall Lead” as one of Chekov’s guards. Once a redshirt, always a redshirt. He’s doing fine until Chekov decides to start a fight and unfortunately, this guy draws....
Tumblr media
Spock as his opponent.  Not exactly a fair fight. And this leads to one of my favorite screenshots - a classic Vulcan nerve pinch and a very convincing look of agony from Spock’s target. Both Lt. Kaplan and the security guard in “And the Children Shall Lead” were played by DIck (Richard Emile Ashley) Dial, Jr. He did have another acting part as one of the Fabrini guards in “The World Is Hollow and I Have Touched The Sky.”
Tumblr media
But Dick Dial was primarily known as stuntman in Hollywood and Star Trek often used him in that regard as well. In the first season episode “Arena,” Dial was Shatner’s stunt double during the exciting fight scene with the Gorn. He also served as a stunt double for one of the Warriors in “Friday’s Child” and a general stuntman in “The Immunity Syndrome.”
Tumblr media
As mentioned earlier, Dick Dial gained his fame mainly as a stuntman. But before that, he was an athlete at Classen High in Oklahoma City and also at the University of Oklahoma. Dial definitely had a well rounded sports background, which most likely helped him land work in Hollywood. He was a champion Golden Gloves boxer, a competitive sailor and a ranked tennis pro.
Dial began his Hollywood career in The Searchers as a stuntman, working along side Jeff Hunter in 1956 and landed a role as William Holden’s double on The Horse Soldiers. (Interestingly, both were John Wayne films). His Golden Glove championship came in handy when he landed work as one of the stuntmen in the boxing sequences in the Elvis Presley film Kid Galahad. This movie also had other TOS actors - Bill Zuckert, Louie Elias, and Seamon Glass. And he acted or performed stunts many other well known Hollywood movie stars such as Henry Fonda, Robert Duvall, Charlton Heston and Charles Bronson
The above photograph shows Dial as a character named Carson in the movie They Call Me Mr. Tibbs. He also was a stuntman in the same film. (This movie was mentioned in an earlier article on Charlie Washburn who was the second assistant director)
Tumblr media
But Dick Dial had more success in television, starting with being Lloyd Bridge’s stunt double on Sea Hunt from 1958 to 1961 (he also doubled Bridges in a 1975-76 police series called Joe Forrester). Another series he worked on was The Fugitive where he doubled David Janssen from 1963-1967. Dial was seen often in small acting roles, such as the one above from Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (second season episode “The Shape of Doom”) as well as The Man from U.N.C.L.E., The Time Tunnel, The Green Hornet, and Mannix.
Tumblr media
After his appearances in Star Trek, Dial continued his acting career with appearances on The Mod Squad, The Felony Squad, and Mission Impossible. His appearance (seen above) in the 5th season Mission Impossible episode “Hunted” was particularly amazing because he was actually playing the character Barney in disguise (played by Greg Morris, whose son Phil appeared as one of the children in the TOS epiosde “Miri.”)
But this was not Dick Dial’s only association with Mission Impossible. He was Peter Graves’ stunt double for 89 episodes. His final long term stint as a stunt double was for Robert Loggia in Mancuso, FBI ( 20 episodes). However, Dick Dial had a life beyond the screen. In his off time, he sailed competitively and was an “A” ranked tennis player. One of the members of a discussion board for Dick Dial on Memory Alpha remembers him as his Little League coach from 1968 to 1971. Earlier in life, he had taken classes at the Art Institute of Chicago. So it should be no surprise he continued to use that talent later in life. Dial’s caricatures of celebrities and friends were hung in two well-known Hollywood restaurants owned by a friend of his (La Scala Presto and La Scala Malibu) . He also did humorous political cartoons that were published in papers such as the LA Times. Many of his oil paintings were considered to be gallery quality. Unfortunately, very few of these can be seen (other than in photos) and his daughter DuPree Dial is still looking for them. If you think you may have one, look for the name DIAL in the bottom right hand corner. Of all Star Trek memorabilia you could have, this may be one of the rarest. Think of it - how wild would it be to own a piece of art from a man whom Mike Douglas (a popular TV host in the 60s and 70s) referred to as “The Hollywood Stuntman.”
Tumblr media
Someone on Tumblr with the name "Frank-o-meter" constructed this handy dandy chart of redshirts in "The Apple."  It provides a nice way to pay tribute to Kaplan and his fellow comrades in red. And a reminder that with Kaplan, we have covered most of the information known on the actors who portrayed them. In the Heat of the Night (1967); AFI #75
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the Heat of the Night (1967) was the next movie on the AFI list and it is one of my absolute favorites. It won five academy awards for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Screenplay, Best Writing, and Best Editing. It is a take on old fashion Southern racism and a strong, intelligent black detective that shows them the error in their ways. The part of the Southern police chief that learns to respect the black Philadelphia detective was played by Rod Stiger, and he won every Major Best Actor award that year (Oscar, BAFTA, Golden Globe). An absolutely brilliant pair of lead actors. I want to go over the general plot, but I won’t go into too much detail as it is a mystery:
Some spoilers so give the movie a watch before reading. It is well worth it.
The movie is set completely in the small Southern town of Sparta where a local big wig has been killed. It appears that he was mugged and the local deputy finds a black man waiting at the train station. He assumes that this man is the assailant and brings him in to the station. They treat him very disrespectfully and refer to him as “boy” until they check his ID and find that the man is a detective in Philadelphia. His name is Virgil Tibbs (Sidney Poitier) and the local police chief Gillespie (Rod Stiger) is embarrassed and instead asks Detective Tibbs to stay and help solve the murder.
The constant racist undertone is apparent, and so is the desire to get the crime solved. The man who died turns out to be an important factory owner that was going to bring a lot of new jobs to the little town of Sparta. Thus, Gillespie and Tibbs must work together, even though the don’t like each other, to solve the mystery.
Detective Tibbs asks a lot of questions and his interrogations of local racist community leaders does not win him any friends. The chief keeps trying to arrest people and send Tibbs back to Philadelphia, but he keeps getting the wrong man and is corrected by the East Coast detective on many occasions. Some of the locals start trying to gang up and attack Tibbs so it becomes desperate that they find the killer and get him out of town for his own safety.
The do eventually resolve all issues and Tibbs is sent back to Philadelphia with the respect of the Chief. Again, I don’t want to spoil the mystery aspect so I will leave the synopsis at that.
Of note is that, although Poitier was the actor with the most screen time and who I would have considered the lead actor, he was not even nominated for Best Actor at the Academy Awards. In the time of the Civil Rights Movement, this was one hell of a slight by the Academy and has tainted the category to this day. The whole situation was drenched in irony because of the topic of the movie and that the white lead actor received all the accolades.
I would like to note that I called the killer from very early on the first time I saw the movie because I didn’t like the look of the person. I was told I was being judgmental and that is exactly what this movie was making a statement against. I am not sure of the lesson I learned from that, but I did think it was a little odd.
Also of note is the excellent use of the ticking clock. Instead of having some nameless higher up insisting on a time limit, it is the environment that pressures the forward progress of the story. I believe that the whole situation takes place over 3 days. Also, the town is tiny, so it keeps everything well incapsulated like a Sherlock Holmes tale. I really have an affinity for movies that tell a big story within a small space and time. It really keeps the plot holes to a minimum and tends to wrap up all details very well.
Finally, I would like to point out the marvelous soundtrack. It was written and arranged by the great Quincy Jones back when he was only 33 years old. The soundtrack featured original works by him and performed by Ray Charles. This was one of the first movies where I legitimately noticed the soundtrack on first view and truly enjoyed it. Fantastic!
The two questions I answer every time are very easy with this film. Does it deserve to be on the AFI list? Oh my goodness yes. There are some great quotes, it is highly representative of the era, it is a heavy award winner, and it is flat out a fantastic movie...no doubt in my mind. Would I recommend it? Emphatically. This movie is currently very underappreciated (perhaps because people associate it with the rather dismal TV show of the same name) and I would love to see it boosted back into the social consciousness. Great movie, so watch it and tell your friends.

GIRARD — Virginia N. Kohut, 98, of Girard, passed away peacefully Thursday, Oct. 29, 2020, at her home with her family by her side.
Virginia was born March 25, 1922, in Youngstown, the daughter of Christopher and Concetta (Anzevino) Anzivino.
Virginia worked for McKelvey’s in Youngstown and Livingston’s in the Liberty Plaza. She was a member of St. Rose Church. Virginia enjoyed playing cards with her friends and family, as well as ballroom and polka dancing. Her greatest joy in life was her family, always being there for her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed helping with the Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts when her own children were young, and as a grandmother she never missed an event that her grandchildren were a part of. The neighbor kids loved coming to Virginia’s house, where she would always have food and special treats for them.
Virginia was known most for her big heart and giving spirit, lending a helping hand to all who knew her, hosting parties, reunions, and charity and neighborhood events throughout her life. In her later years, she enjoyed telling stories of her childhood in Briar Hill to her many nieces and nephews.
She leaves to cherish memories of her, her children, Charles R. Kohut of Canfield, Clarence “Lance” (Pat) Kohut of Sagamore Hills and Cheryl (Richard) Asente, with whom she made her home; and her grandchildren, Joseph Asente, Justin Asente (Jade Tibbs), Cody Hernandez, Angela Queneau and Katie Ziegler.
Virginia was preceded in death by her first husband, Jerry Simone; her second husband, Charles Kohut, whom she married in 1950 and he died in 1988; her daughter-in-law, Jan Kohut; sisters, Rose Pandone, Mary Anzivino, Annette Bassett and Clementine Simone; and her brothers, Carl, Frank and Dominic Ansevin.
Private services were held Monday, Nov. 2, 2020, at St. Rose Church.
Virginia was laid to rest in Green Haven Memorial Gardens.
