Fun Furry Facts!
Spike Trotman (aka Squee Rat) was the founder of the “Burned Furs”, a conservative (and later deeply homohobic) Furry movement. Spike was also the author of the “Furry Manifesto”, a truly bizarre rant that outlines the beliefs and motivations of this group.
Burned Furs claimed “Anthropomorphics fandom is being overrun by sexually dysfunctional, socially stunted and creatively bankrupt hacks and pervs.” Spike now hypocritically makes a living selling pornographic comicbooks and refuses to discuss her past as “Squee Rat”.
Spike Trotman also distributed material encouraging certain individuals to commit suicide.
“I remember when being a pervert was a bad thing. I don't know what the hell happened here.“
-Spike Trotman, editor and publisher of “Smut Peddler”.
Spike Trotman was also known as “Darth Versace” on the “Something Awful” forums. She used to be a very vocal in that community, taking part in the mocking, bullying, and harassment of young child artists on DeviantArt.
Apparently Spike Trotman was also responsible for purposefully changing a hosted image on her website to a pornographic gif in order to knowingly spread that image on a children’s art forum (the now defunct BakaNeko forums).
Other names that Spike Trotman has gone by are “Charla Trotman” (her actual name) and “Charlie Trotman”.
How people describe Spike Trotman during the time of the “Burned Furs” movement:
“The woman self-destructed. She had all the interpersonal skills and charm of a tasmanian devil with herpes, and she snapped and frothed at everyone around her, friend and foe alike.“
Spike Trotman remains deeply embarassed of her Squee Rat roots, attempting to purge it from the internet. Spike Trotman was in her early 20′s at the time of the Burned Furs movement (an adult), and was in her 30′s at the time she was mocking DeviantArt users. She would have been in her mid 20′s during the BakaNeko incident.

How We Got a $30,000 Grant To Work On Our Afrofuturist Comic
2019 was going to rock for our little Afrofuturist comic, Outcasts of Jupiter. I said as much at the start of the year, but I’m not sure I really believed it.
I knew it represented a crossroads for Shof and me on the book. After five years of spinning our wheels, we felt a desperate need to tell the story we began in a Kickstarter in 2014. So we looked for comic book grants online.
I can tell you that searching for comic book grants online doesn’t return a whole lot of truly viable options. Most of what you’ll find is relatively small (but nonetheless vital and welcome) endowments that focus on funding a modest self-publishing run, or covering the cost of materials.
We needed something more.
When we found a grant that pledged $30,000 to support the production of a creator-owned comic, we thought it was too good to be true. We applied anyway. One year later, here we are, working on an Afrofuturist epic, getting sent monthly checks to support the building of a brand new science fiction universe of our own design.
Shof and I were awarded the 2019 Creators for Creators Grant, and I kinda feel the need to talk about it, because I believe it’s an incredibly important and unique grant for the medium. More people need to know about it. What is the grant, and how does it work?
You get $30,000 paid out over the course of one year, in support of the creation of a 64-100 page comic book or graphic novel.
Single cartoonist or writer/artist duos welcome.
An incredibly simple application process. Look.
It’s an international grant, with no geographic restrictions.
Some very impressive creators behind the grant, including Charlie Adlard, Jordie Bellaire, David Brothers, Kelly Sue DeConnick, Nick Dragotta, Leila del Duca, Matt Fraction, Kieron Gillen, Jonathan Hickman, Joe Keatinge, Robert Kirkman, Jamie McKelvie, Rick Remender, Declan Shalvey, Fiona Staples, Eric Stephenson, C. Spike Trotman, and Brian K. Vaughan.
You retain all rights to your work. This was massively important to us. Best of all, the grant opens up some seriously exciting publishing options, including Image and Iron Circus Comics.
There’s precious little paperwork or legalese to stress over once you’re awarded the grant. The entire process has felt surprisingly painless, and help/advice/guidance is only an email away.
The grant is not an “advance.” Let that sink in for a moment. This is money that you, as a creator can use in any way you see fit to support the creation of the comic. That could mean ditching ramen for proper food, or exhibitor passes to experience-enhancing cons, or simply the ability to take a little time off work and focus on the comic.
There’s a ton more information on the official website. You should have a look.
A few words in closing...
We weren’t lucky. We worked hard for it.
Anyone can apply for a grant, but to “win it,” you’ve got to get your act together. That means producing the best pitch you can possibly muster. I’ll talk more about that soon. For now, if you’ve got a dream and a burning passion, you owe it to yourself to apply for the C4C Grant. Most importantly, always remember you aren’t alone. There are folks out there who want you to succeed.
Rock on, 2019

Creators for Creators accepting 2020 grant applications through May 11
The nonprofit Creators for Creators is taking applications for their 2020 grant through May 11. Complete details on submitting can be found on their website.
As their website says, Creators for Creators “is an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit organization intended to encourage, support, and promote original works through grants and education.” The grant was founded by several creators, who also serve as mentors for recipients: Charlie Adlard, Jordie Bellaire, David Brothers, Kelly Sue DeConnick, Nick Dragotta, Leila del Duca, Matt Fraction, Kieron Gillen, Jonathan Hickman, Joe Keatinge, Robert Kirkman, Jamie McKelvie, Rick Remender, Declan Shalvey, Fiona Staples, Eric Stephenson, C. Spike Trotman and Brian K. Vaughan.
This will be the fourth year the grant has been offered. M. Dean’s project I Am Young received the grant in 2017, while Desvitio’s project David’s Gate was honored in 2018. Last year’s winner was Shobo and Shofela Coker’s Outcasts of Jupiter:
Tumblr media
“A lot of the creatives that make up the jury are creators and artists I’ve followed for ages, so it feels special,” Shofela Coker said after winning last year. “Can’t express how much of a boost of confidence and validation the grant is. I’m excited about the platform this gives us to get the book over the line.”

Everything I Read in 2016
Tumblr media
For the third year in a row, I logged every novel, short story collection, poetry compilation, graphic novel, and collected edition of monthly comics I read, excluding individual monthly comics (on which I continued to fall catastrophically behind) and anything I read (and reread, and reread again) for my day job. My only big change? A lot of these books were read on my iPad Mini. And a good number were for my gay book club (you can guess which ones).
If you don’t yet keep track of your reading, you should start in 2017. It’s your best bet for hitting a reading goal, and for folks like me who read a ton, it’s a nice way to recall books that otherwise departed your memory.
For the tl;dr crowd, here are my Top 13 for the year, in the order in which I read them:
On Writing, Stephen King
Binti, Nnedi Okorafor
The Girls, Emma Cline
I Am a Hero Vol. 1 & Vol. 2, Kengo Hanazawa
Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe, Benjamin Alire Saenz
The Hero: Book Two, David Rubín
Night Sky With Exit Wounds, Ocean Vuong
Lincoln in the Bardo, George Saunders (I read an ARC)
A Choir of Ill Children, Tom Piccirilli
Habitat, Simon Roy
Prez Vol. 1, Mark Russell, Ben Caldwell, Domo Stanton
Bones of the Coast, edited by Shannon Campbell, Jeff Ellis, Kathleen Jacques
(New X-Men Omnibus was a re-read, or it would be up here.)
The rest is below the jump!
I don’t really feel like dumping on anything this year. I definitely got burnt out on comic anthologies, and I hated A Little Life, but the good outweighs the bad. Below is the full list, divided by month, followed by a few statistics and an evaluation of my 2016 reading goals as established last January.
[A note on comics: I feel guilty that I’ve left off colorists and inkers, as they contribute so much to a book, but I defaulted to cover credits while logging my reading and don’t have most of these books on-hand to fix it now.]
January
The Amazing World of Gumball: Fairy Tale Trouble, Megan Brennan, Katy Farina, Jeremy Lawson
Adventure Time: Masked Mayhem, Kate Leth, Bridget Underwood, Drew Green, Vaughn Pinpin, Meredith McClaren
Sir Edward Grey: Witchfinder: The Mysteries of Unland, Kim Newman, Maura McHugh, Tyler Crook
On Writing, Stephen King
Binti, Nnedi Okorafor
The Best American Science Fiction and Fantasy 2016, edited by John Joseph Adams & Joe Hill
The Sorcerer of the Wildeeps, Kai Ashante Wilson
February
Planet Hulk, Sam Humphries & Marc Laming
Future Imperfect, Peter David & Greg Land
Hail Hydra, Rick Remender & Roland Boschi

Marvel Zombies, Si Spurrier & Kev Walker
Old Man Logan, Brian Michael Bendis & Andrea Sorrentino

Total:
140 Books (up from 128 in 2015 and 87 in 2014)
Breakdown:
39 Novels or short story collections (down from 43 in 2015 and 44 in 2014)
98 Graphic novels/collected editions of comics (up from 84 in 2015 and a measly 42 in 2014)
3 Books of poetry (triple the 2015 and 2014 counts!)
About 35 Books written or edited by female authors (up from 20 in 2015 and 16 in 2014; note that I’m only counting writers and editors, not artists, and I’m counting books, not unique authors)
Roughly 19 books by (known-to-be) non-white authors (down from 30 last year but up from 9 in 2014...but both this year and last were inflated by multiple entries from manga creators)
...and at least 16 books written or edited by queer and trans authors.
So...any suggestions for 2017?

NASCAR Cup Series race at Dover postponed to Monday
DOVER, Del. — Jimmie Johnson posed for a photo with Hall of Famers Bobby Allison and Richard Petty from an appearance this weekend and wrote the caption “367 and counting.”
His combined win total has been stuck on that number since June 4, 2017, when Johnson won the last of his 83 NASCAR Cup races. Mired in the worst slump of his career, the seven-time NASCAR champion was back at his favorite track on Sunday, his 11 wins at Dover International Speedway a record.
He has to wait another day to go for No. 12 and end his slump.
NASCAR will race at noon Monday after rain fell on the mile concrete track all day and the only action came from a Charlie Daniels Band concert. If the devil went down to Delaware, he would have needed a poncho. NASCAR tried to start the race but pulled the cars from the track after a handful of pace laps once the rain came again.
The 43-year-old Johnson, who recently ran the Boston Marathon, flashed some speed at Dover when he topped the final practice Saturday with a fast lap of 161.863 mph in the No. 48 Chevrolet.
“This is just one of those places that an athlete finds a bond with a facility or a venue,” Johnson said. “I don’t care if I have three wheels left on this thing, I feel like I still have a shot to win. I just love this place.”
With Dover celebrating its 50th anniversary season, the race winners will receive a 60-pound Miles the Monster trophy converted from its customary concrete-like finish to metallic gold.
Johnson has 11 of the standard-issue trophies: The Hendrick Motorsports driver swept Dover in 2002 and 2009 and won races in 2005, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2017. He joined Richard Petty (Martinsville-15, North Wilkesboro-15, Richmond-13, Rockingham-11) and Darrell Waltrip (Bristol-12, Martinsville-11) as drivers who won 11 races at a single track. His 83rd career victory tied him with Cale Yarborough for sixth on the career victory list. Waltrip and Allison are next at 84.
“I’m very biased about this race track. I think it’s the best one out there,” Johnson said. “I think all drivers can appreciate just the challenge that comes with this track, the banking, the speed, the transitions from the straightaways through the corners. I noticed on social media before we got here that drivers and crew members and crew chiefs were all talking about how much they love coming here.”
He starts 12th and tries to help Hendrick have another stout race day. Chase Elliott got his first win of the season, the first for Chevrolet and the first for Hendrick Motorsports last week at Talladega. Elliott and teammate William Byron make it a 1-2 front row for Hendrick at Dover. The 23-year-old Elliott became the youngest pole winner at Dover when he set a track record of 165.960 mph in qualifying.
Dover hasn’t held a Monday race since 2007 when Martin Truex Jr. earned his first Cup victory. He has added 19 more wins and the 2017 NASCAR Cup championship over that span.
“One of my favorites to come to, for sure,” Truex said. “It’s called the Monster for a reason. It’s mean and it’s fast and it’s big. It’s kind of crazy.”
He wants a second Monday win at Dover. Johnson aims for No. 12 here. All the team needs at a chance to reach its milestones is a dry concrete track.
