Thank you, I'm glad you've been enjoying everything!

It's been raining for three days now, and Gou hasn't slept for two, and he isn't even awake when Chase comes back. He stayed awake for as long as he could, but Rinna makes him sit down and get out of her way around half past eleven, and by the time a body is spinning itself together on the table he's been dead to the world for two hours.

He drifts back up towards consciousness to the sound of a low, steady voice saying, "He looks unwell."

"He hasn't been sleeping enough lately, he's been helping me out here in the lab a lot." Rinna's voice is quiet, the softness of someone trying not to wake a sleeping child. "Even when I'm not here, he's been sitting at the computer over there just watching the data compile."

"My data?"

"Yes, he's put more work into...this, this whole thing, than pretty much anyone else."

"With what intent? He does not like Roidmudes."

"That's--I'll let you ask him yourself when he wakes up."

And finally it dawns on Gou, still half-asleep, that they're talking about him, and moreover that he knows that steady voice, knows it like a dog knows a thorn in its paw or a murder victim knows the knife in their chest, and he jolts awake and says, "Chase."

Chase looks down at him, impassive as always. "Shijima Gou. You require more sleep."

Gou has had years to think of what he might say now, has come up with and discarded and reconsidered countless impassioned declarations and smart comments and simple greetings. Every single one of them flees him now. He just stares up, blinking the sleep out of his eyes, and says, again, "Chase. It's you."

"Yes. It is me. Dr. Sawagami tells me that you are in large part responsible." There's a hesitation in which Chase remains, as usual, expressionless, but nevertheless there's a palpable something in his voice as he says, "Why?"

Which is too much of a question to answer in one go, too much of a question to answer now when he's still exhausted and trying not to tremble from the shock of Chase, it's too--"I. Uh. That's a great question, can we talk about it...not now? Excuse me." He gets up from the chair, ignoring the insistent agony of Bad Nap Location Choices, and heads for the door that leads outside because there isn't really anywhere else that's good to go around here.

it is, of course, still raining out. Harder than it was before, even, nearly torrential, and somehow that feels right. He tucks himself against the building, into the minimal protection of the overhang, and breathes. He's not panicking. His heart is beating so hard that it could explode for entirely unrelated reasons.

Five minutes pass, then ten, and his heartbeat slows down but he's still shaking, and the rain will not let up but going back inside isn't an option yet. So he stays outside and lets his clothes get soaked through, and that feels almost ok.

Another five minutes past that and the door opens and he doesn't look up from his drenched sneakers to see who it is. He just waits, listening to the rain and the little bit of passing traffic and the profound stillness of the person standing next to his elbow, and then Chase says, "I have spoken to Heart on the telephone."

Gou takes a long, shaky breath. "Yeah? He tell you anything interesting?"

"He told me that he was babysitting."

"...yeah. Yeah, he does that a lot lately."

"He also told me that he has only been alive again for three months, and that his successful resurrection is due in part to your efforts. His, and Brain's, and Medic's." Beat. "He says that he has grown fond of you."

Gou lets out a coughing laugh. "He likes everyone."

"He does not. He is generous with his affection, but not indiscriminate."

"If you say so. I don't really know him that well, fond of me or not."

"You are less generous."

"...I guess so."

"You do not like me, but you have endangered your own health for my sake. Why?"

Gou keeps staring at his sneakers. "You're wrong."

"About what?"

"I like you. I like you a lot. More than pretty much anyone, actually." He stands up, away from the wall, and finally he starts to turn towards Chase, but he's still so tired that he loses his balance and ends up falling to his knees at Chase's feet. Which feels fine, that feels appropriate. "I'm just really fucking dense, you know? So I didn't actually figure it out until. Until--I killed my dad with an axe for you, did Rinna mention that?" He looks up at Chase, bleary and exhausted and dizzied by the sight of Chase backlit and glowing in a halo of pounding rain. "You don't have to...to do anything with that. Or any of this. I just thought you should know. That he's dead, and I like you."

Chase nods slowly. "I see." He's holding out a hand, and it takes Gou a moment to realize that it's for him, another moment to grab it and let himself be pulled up. "Thank you."

"I, well, I, uh--I don't really know what to. You're. You're welcome."

And Chase kisses him.

The thing is, he's put some thought into what kissing Chase might be like. A lot of thought, maybe too much thought, maybe he's thought so much about what it might be like for Chase to be alive and there and letting Gou kiss him that it's a little unhealthy. Maybe the concept in its infinite variations has sustained him through a dark night of the soul or five. And yet, somehow, in among all those infinite variations, he's never managed to hit on one where Chase is the one initiating, because there's no way in hell Chase both knows about kissing and would consider doing it with him without him suggesting it first.

Right?

So it sort of feels like he's blown a fuse in his brain, and all he manages to say is, "Uh?"

Chase blinks slowly. "It seemed situationally appropriate." He looks at Gou closely. "We should go inside now, you are both very wet and suffering from sleep deprivation."

"What? What does that mean, it seemed situationally appropriate?"

"We can discuss it in greater depth when you are not in imminent danger of collapse."

"I'm not going to collapse, what does that mean?" Despite his confusion, Gou finds that he really doesn't have the energy to resist being walked inside, and anyway he kind of doesn't want to move away from Chase's arm around his shoulders. "Also how do you know about kissing?"

Chase glances at him. "You are not the first person I have ever kissed."

"Oh." Gou blinks, the exhaustion hitting him in a sudden wave as he tries to process this. "Oh, ok. Wait, who else did you kiss?"

"Dr. Sawagami, are there any towels available? Gou is in danger of hypothermia."

"Who did you kiss, though?"

also it’s so crazy how the show sets up gou with his “roidmudes are all EVIL!!! we have to KILL THEM ALL!!!” philosophy as the unreasonable hate-driven foil to shinnosuke’s calm reasonable protagonist (the “drive protects, mach destroys” line was genuinely so good), except... krim openly talks at several points about eliminating the roidmudes and shinnosuke goes along with this, and in the last quarter of the show the protagonists pull out a fucking HIT LIST of the ROIDMUDES THAT ARE LEFT and check off new boxes every episode, so actually what is the moral difference between shinnosuke and gou aside from gou being prone to screaming rages and breakdowns???? huh???

capture roidmudes instead of blowing them up!!!! cop toku is always gonna have dodgy implications but drive was just so egregious about it to me. i remember sanjo saying that after gaim was more serialized, he would ensure that every episode of drive would have a cool fight where a monster was defeated. cool if you're doing a show about some interdimensional tyrant that eats universes or whatever, less cool if you're doing a show where your cop protagonist kills every robot he fights without a second thought until the end where the audience is maybe kinda supposed to feel bad for them actually? "isn't it sad that the roidmudes couldn't escape this unavoidable fate?" it was very avoidable! extremely avoidable! tony you CHOSE

develop gou and chase's friendship more organically. there's some good stuff there in theory but there needed to be way more "damn it, im kinda warming up to this guy >:(" as opposed to the constant one-sided antagonism that went on for far too long. as is, i just couldn't buy into chase's death scene or gou's big cathartic fight with banno at all, though i totally get why it's such a highlight for others. really enjoyed mach's v-cin tho

in a world where sexism doesn't exist there is no reason on earth kiriko should not be the main character of this show. everything that makes shinnosuke unique as a protagonist also applies to her, doubly so in that instead of having some random dead cop for a dad, her father is the big bad! imagine kiriko, gou, heart, and medic all fighting together to stop the abusive father who raised them? could be pretty poetic and tie a lot of things together. oh well, here's a half-hearted kuuga callback in a parking lot instead

in the world we actually live in where the powers that be at toei and bandai could've easily allowed this, couldn't kiriko at least have become proto-drive in the back half of the show? even pulling a kiva and having it just be for one episode would've been appreciated. could've been a perfect way to cap off her arc, having her overcome her trauma from the global freeze by literally becoming the hero that saved her to protect others. instead, everyone lies to her about everything involving banno to spare her feelings because she's literally a fragile 24 year old minor

just let kiriko do ANYTHING AFTER GOU'S DEBUT MAKES HER BASICALLY IRRELEVANT FOR THE REST OF THE SEASON, ACTUALLY?? PLEASE?????? IM BEGGING YOU

Kiriko and Gou are also tearing up despite being confused while Chase is kinda just stoically standing there because he knows it isn't Heart. Krim is also convinced that it isn't Heart but remains quiet out of respect for Shinnosuke's feelings (since they had a big blowout over reviving the Roidmudes)

Would you think that the cast of shows like Fourze, Drive, Ghost, Saber, or Revice are filled with saints? (outside of obvious villains)

I haven't seen Ghost yet, and didn't finish Saber yet but the other three obviously not? They are three-dimensional characters with their faults and issues. Ryusei fucked big time. Krim enabled the abuse of the Roidmudes and spearheaded their destruction, Gou lashed out on the Roidmudes instead of his father until the end, Daiji is a whole fucking mess, let's not get started on George etc. Even from what I have seen from Saber, Kento can't communicate to save his life, and Ren is also kind of a mess. (that said i didnt finish this yet so i am probably lacking context)

That said, I don't think any of this is bad. The ones I had seen, a lot of them, are addressed, they get development. Gou redirects his anger at the correct point, and works on restoring the Roidmudes. Ryusei makes up for his mistakes and is forgiven. Same about Daiji. Hana, Tamaki and Chase defeat their different brands of brainwashing and work to make up for what they have done. Heart, Brain and Medic might get a second chance at life.

That said, Gentaro, Ikki, Vice, Hiromi or Kiriko never did anything bad in their lives ever and I have forgiven Olteca because he is my poor little meow meow.

Does it made sense? Yeah, like, more than I expected, watching Kiva. As I said when I was watching it, Jiro wants to speedrun Fuck Marry Kill with Otoya. If Jiro could fuck Otoya to death, dismember and spatter him across the walls, and then Otoya'd just pop back like a toon for Jiro to curl up around and wuffle tenderly against his neck? And they could do it all again tomorrow? Like, that would be the perfect world for Jiro. And Otoya, for his part, is so… like ok he's written with all the fun 2008 homophobia that Mister Inoue could muster but I truly feel like Otoya would/has fucked men, and he'd just say it didn't count, or like, that he's not gay because he's… receiving, or because he's topping, or because any number of reasons that would all be really dumb and contradictory. Otoya makes an excellent dog toy, I don't know, and he's a brat, and like they would be so mad at each other the whole time but like… yeah?? Otoya would love to tease Jiro until he got punished?? And then get one over on him and then they can do it all again?? Does it compel me? Yeah. I've read an AWFUL LOT OF IT, but I cannot see myself writing it.

So, like, within the framework we have: Gou is canon bi. Gou wants to take Chase on dates. Gou has incredibly deep, complicated feelings about Chase. Gou and Chase have been like… spiritually… merged? And that (among other things) made Gou want to live for the first time in a long time. I have complicated feelings about GouChase, in the same way I have complicated feelings about Drive in general. Gou is tortured, like truly tortured, and makes horrible decisions all the time because of it. In a sense, he and Krim are on the same mission, kill all of the monsters that they made as a way of atoning for creating them. Gou obviously didn't create them himself, but he's so obsessed with his absent, abusive father that he connects himself to that guilt. (His obsession also leads him to trusting Banno, he wants approval SO BAD, it doesn't matter if his dad is a monster, the boy wants to be loved by his dad.) And I find this incredibly compelling, as a story and a character. Gou is neglected! He's abused! He's passively suicidal! He's making bad choices because NO ONE IS HELPING HIM! And it's consistent! It's good characterization! The dude is fucked up and not coming down off his hill because if he admits he was wrong Enter Chase, the one guy who is helping him. The guy who stands there and listens and prevents Gou from burning it all down and takes all of the rage Gou throws at him because he wants to be here. He wants Gou to be stable. He wants Gou to be Ok. He loves and protects him as a human being, even if Gou doesn't care about himself. I see the romance, in that. I see the appeal of 'it's rotten work, but not to me', here. And I could see my way to the idea that Gou has Uncomfortable Sexual Tension with the guy he hates, leading to romantic feelings for Chase due to his intense guilt post series. I've read some GouChase, and I've enjoyed it, but like… once they get together all the interesting parts are kinda… over for me? Their relationship is too interesting as an angst-ridden emotional exploration of a deeply traumatized individual to flatten it out into 'they live happily ever after'. AND FURTHERMORE… I just don't think Chase sees him that way. He wants to be with him? But I don't know that it's… really about that. Again, that feels like flattening out the nuances of their dynamic. And further furthermore, I actually think Chase is ace. I think all of the Roidmudes are on the ace spectrum, actually. So to sum up, I get the math it took to get here, but for me it Doesn't Make Sense, and it Does Not Compel Me. I… hope that makes sense. I apparently have a lot to say about them.

I went into this in another ship meme once upon a time, so I'll be brief but basically… I get it, but it's not for me. I just don't see them as having the time or the emotional intelligence to actually be vulnerable enough to explore any kind of romantic/sexual attraction they may have had for each other. For me, that's compelling enough! Two people who care about each other in spite of their situation but never had the time to get into it? The intense tragedy of that? Of not having enough time, of always thinking you had tomorrow until all your tomorrows were gone?? That's delicious. I like that more than the idea that they were smoochin' between the scenes. So… Makes Sense, in that I see why it's so popular. Doesn't Compel Me, in that I genuinely just don't ship it.

Drive Fav Male has to be Chase. He's just so...Chase, ya know? Toku has taught me that I am weak to slightly sad purple robots. I don't know that this is actionable information but it is interesting that it happened twice.

Drive Fav Female I want to say Kiriko but the truth is it's Rinna, I fucking ADORE Rinna. What a great trope-y characer - crazy scientist lady who is slightly older then the main cast but acts/dresses like a highschool girl. What a fashion icon fr fr And her punching through the montage in the Revice crossover??? Chef's kiss baby.

Drive Fav Pairing OF COURSE it's Gou/Chase, but I want to take a sec and talk about how much I love Shinnosuke/Kiriko and Heart/Brain/Medic. Like first of all, Shinnosuke's Li Shang Bisexual "Oh shit I'm in love with Oh shit, I think he DOES actually like women and it's not just the writers pushing something!" As for the Roidmude trio I mean c'mon, they are perfect. Also like...queer poly rep, even if they are kinda toxic lmao

Drive Least Fav Character would probably have to be Freeze actually. I have a lot of problems with that story arc in general, Freeze seems like an unnecessary villain and it feels like the stuff with Shinnosuke's dad is just squeed in there :/

Who's Most Like Me ...Gou(derogatory) I can fit so much projection on that secondary Rider hoo boy.

Three More Characters I Like would be Honganji Jun, Brain and every single Shift Car

Saber Fav Male has to be Ren, I feel SO BAD for him throughout Saber. Like yeah, Touma and Kento are GOING THROUGH IT, but Ren is just a kid and there's no one there for him cause everyone else is grieving - poor kid slips through the cracks.

Saber Fav Fema- MEI!! IT'S MEI! HOLY SHIT I LOVE MEI!! She's just an actual ray of sunshine??? I adore everything about her

Fav Pairing It would be a lie if I said Kento/Touma, because the truth is I am weak for kaijin/human pairings so I have to say Ren/Desat. I love that despite their slightly hostile vibe they really care about each other in a way no one else has before.

Least Fav Character would have to be Yuri I suppose. I would say Saber's only flaw is having too many characters, and by the time Yuri shows up there's almost not enough screen time to go around as is. So it's not Yuri's fault, per se lol

Who's Most Like Me? In Saber that's a hard one. I would probably have to say Kento, especially post resurrection where he, in a way, has to learn how to be hopeful again.

Most Attractive Rintaro probably. He's kind and calm and caring.

the thing about gouchase is i enjoy it a lot and i also think gou is not really cut out to be a good boyfriend for chase due to all his anger issues and repression and roidmude-dad-baggage but i still like to think about them being in a relationship together. it’s not a matter of chase being unhappy in the relationship either because i feel like due to his even-more-robotic-than-the-other-roidmudes personality he has quite a passive nature and would just be like well this is fine. no complaints. and it’s not really situation where like, sometimes i think of a fictional couple, even one i “ship”, and i’m like aaauuhhh this character needs to get out of that relationship and find someone better but they will never want to…. but i don’t feel that way with gouchase it’s more of like, sometimes a relationship can be mildly dysfunctional and make you think “you should probably not act that way to your boyfriend” but still continue in a stable manner where the people involved make it work. many such cases in real life. that’s my gouchase vision

my least favorite is definitely terui ryuu's pause. stop that. nitou too but i like nitou more so he gets a pass. but favorite...hmmm. i love flip phone henshin devices SO much. you give me a flip phone henshin device and i start frothing at the mouth. like smart phone henshin devices i haven't even really SEEN other than sento's phone turns into a motorcycle. like we went in the wrong direction for that.

19: If you could go back and change one show, what would you change?

fjsiodfjsdiofjsdio i'd change drive into a pizza guy nah for real... i mean there's so many problems with drive tho. i have caught chase/gou feels and i'm really mad about that, actually! the show barely supports it! like even for FRIENDS! gou is too mad right up until chase sacrifices himself and i would have preferred to see more acceptance on gou's side before that happens. cause like that drama cd is just SO something lmao like GOU DIDN'T LIKE CHASE.
