I bought this copy of Stardust at a Half Price Books a couple months ago. Love the story! Hate movie covers. It feels like Robert De Niro is staring into my soul…
Tumblr media
I was reading it about a week ago when I realized that I have some bookbinding skills and I don’t have to live like this anymore! Ripped the cover off before I even fully thought it through. (Sorry Mr. Gaiman the author bio was a casualty 😔)
Tumblr media
Also ripped out the movie scene insert and the movie theater coupon that expired in ‘07
Tumblr media
Added some end pages, stitched some headbands and cased it in!

Might tackle my movie edition LotR box set next 👀

I see there's a new post on AO3 on AI and data scraping, the contents of which I would describe as a real mixed bag, and the sheer number of comments on it is activating my self-preservation instincts too much for me to subject myself to reading through them. Instead I'm thinking about how much daylight there is between does or doesn't constitute a TOS violation and what does or doesn't violate community norms, and how AO3 finally rolled out that blocking and muting feature recently, and how I think it would be good, actually, if most people's immediate reaction to seeing a work that announces itself as being the product of generative AI was to mute the user who posted it.
That's my reaction, anyway!

Hi! I'm thinking of making a garment from scratch and will probably need a large piece of fabric for this. I'm wondering what sustainable ways there are to get something big enough? Like, what I could search on second hand apps?? I'm also a big fan of interesting textures, like crushed velvet or satin, so bonus points for that!
Sustainable fabric sources
The most sustainable item is one that already exists.
If you're planning on thrifting fabric, you'll always be faced with surprises as you'll never know up front what you'll find. I personally love this as my creativity thrives when my material choices are limited, but it's not everyone's cup of tea.
Textile waste:
Some countries have commercial textile waste outlets. They're worth a check if you have a local one.
While not entirely the same, your local fabric shop may also have a discount pile of fabric leftovers. You'll still be buying newly made fabric, but those scraps don't always get sold so you're still using something that had a higher chance of going to waste than the rest of the shop.
Thrifted fabric:
While a few thrift shops have a craft section, you'll probably have the most luck in the homeware department: bedsheets, tablecloths, curtains,... all make for great sources of fabric. Just make sure to pick materials that are suitable for clothes.
Don't forget to check out the scarves, too! I've made a ton clothes in the past with thrifted silk scarves, for example. Plenty of satin to be found, too. Clothes like maxi skirts can also be a good source of fabric.
Take a look around the store first and see what's available before taking something home for a craft project. Some of life's necessities are hard to thrift for: underwear, disability aids, and plus size clothing are common examples, but this heavily depends on where you live and shop. If you've picked out the only large size on a rack, it might be better to leave it for someone else.
You'll also occasionally find people giving away their fabric stash in buy-nothing groups. I've had luck with finding textile lots on thrifting apps in the past, too.
Making the most of what you have:
The cheapest and most sustainable option is to use what you already have.
Check your stash before shopping for new materials. Ask around if any fellow crafty friends have leftovers they don't use any more. Learn how to minimise fabric waste when cutting out your pattern pieces.
If you've got lots of smaller bits of fabric, look into techniques like fabric piecing, patchwork, or colour blocking to achieve larger pieces of fabric.

sometimes wonder if people consider that, decades ago, the "cheapest" and "lowest quality" stuff generally cost more (adjusted) and was higher quality than the cheapest, lowest quality stuff available now
(I said generally)

DIN A2 space filled with 4 sheets of DIN A4 paper in 4 different colors.
Each DIN A4 sheet is split into pieces ranging from DIN A5 (largest) to DIN A11 (smallest). Each size from A5 to A10 exists one time per each color. A11 exists two times per each color. (I could have continued with splitting the A11 into two A12 tiles - but these would be too tiny for my clumsy hands to handle.)
I might create some mosaic patterns with this... (using some exchange algorithms... )

I've been thinking about trying to mod the pattern I used to make this cardboard wolf mask to make a German Shorthaired Pointer mask, but I'm not sure how well that would work since the face shapes are just so different.

If anyone has any mask making experience or tips to share please let me know!!! :]

So I bought a couple belts that turned out to be just a couple of inches too tight-- they kept my pants up, but they were uncomfortable.
I got them at a thrift shop, so there wasn't a lot of choice regarding the size-- but also they were like a dollar each, so I figured I could play around with upsizing and if they didn't survive I wouldn't be too put out about it.
Since they were the same size and nearly the exact same style (I'm betting they were both from the same person), they make for a good before/after set.
Tumblr media
I cut it into pieces, sewed the ends, added grommets, and laced them back together with paracord.
You can see the extra length the laces gave me, and it's a lot more comfortable to wear. The knots are a bit lumpy, though-- I'll need to experiment with ways to secure the laces that will lay flat.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also had some extra grommets left in the kit I bought (it came to all of $3 with a coupon), I went ahead and repaired another belt, too.

I hate modern craft culture with a burning passion, it's so cheap and so temporary. There's no desire to make holiday crafts or home crafts that will last for years and be passed down to people who love them, they're all designed to be cheap to make, easy to do, and completely disposable
Literally every time I've seen people do fun home crafts it's been the tackiest looking paint jobs over cheap halloween supplies, and usually not at all treated to make them long lasting
It's all "get three fake pumpkins from the dollar tree, hot glue them on top of each other, and paint them white for some reason with no primer or cleaning or sealing", it's all "put cheap cardboard and wood decorations together and paint them to form a tacky decoration that will last one season before falling apart. There's so many projects that are just "print out stickers and put them on wood boards, and do nothing to stain the wood or seal the stickers on"
I'm aware not every craft needs to last, and a lot of these are meant to be temporary, but it's so disheartening. Things go from "there are crafts and decorations that last decades and might even be passed down to people to love them," to "it's not meant to last forever, and if you want one of your own you can make one that'll last a couple years at best pretty cheap"
