Hey, do you want to learn how to play VHS tapes in the year 202X?
Tumblr media
I know this is my art blog, but it has come to my attention that some of you are too young to have experienced the joys of the Video Home System in its prime. Come hither so I can teach you and we can embrace the beauty of physical media together. If you have a thrift store and a TV, this process should work for you.
Step 1: Get a VCR ($4-$15)
DO NOT BUY EXPENSIVE VCR/COMBO SETS FROM THE INTERNET!
The ones you find on sites like eBay and Etsy are insanely overpriced and might not even work. Instead, find a Goodwill, Savers, or independent thrift store near you and go to the electronics section. There’s a good chance they’ll have at least one VCR. If they don’t, try a different shop. You can also check local online marketplaces, yard sales, etc.
Good things to look for:
4 (or more) Heads — Heads are the things that actually read the tape. The more heads you have, the better your picture is going to be.
Auto Tracking — Poor tracking can create a rolling picture, which is a pain to fix. An auto tracking VCR does that work for you.
Pre-2000 — After 2000, electronics started being mass produced with plastic casings and cheap parts. VCRs made after this time are a whole lot easier to break. Ideally, you want something from the late 80s to mid 90s.
Well-known brands — Sony, Toshiba, etc. Japanese manufacturers tend to have the best quality. Early Emersons are nice too.
Generally good condition — If there’s a bullet hole in the case, it’s probably best to pass on. A bit of dust isn’t an issue, but major damage isn’t a good sign. If you can, plug the machine into a power outlet in the store and see if it even turns on.
Head cleaning indicator — Not something you *need*, but I find it nice to have. You’ll want to use a head cleaning tape when the indicator starts flashing.
Tumblr media
This is the one I’ll be using for the sake of this guide. This is an old Emerson that I picked up from Goodwill for $7.95. (Notice the five price tags they slapped on top.)
Step 2: Get Some Tapes (¢10-$1)
This is the fun part. Almost every thrift store will have some VHS tapes, usually near the books/DVDs/records. I’ve seen them as expensive as a dollar, but some stores will just give them away for free. I suggest buying a few movies you like, plus one or two shitty tapes to test out your VCR with.
Tumblr media
You may also find 20 different copies of Titanic in every store. This is a normal occurance.
Tumblr media
Remember to check the condition of any tape you plan on putting in your machine. If the spool looks moldy, you *can* try to clean it, but you’ll need another VCR to do so. If the tape looks wrinkled or otherwise damaged, you can still probably play it, but it will look and sound a lot rougher than you should expect. If the casing is damaged, I wouldn’t risk trying to put it in your VCR at all.
Remember: VHS tapes stopped being produced commercially in 2006. Most tapes you find aren’t going to be in the best shape, because they’re all a few decades old. (Sometimes, though, you will come across a tape with an excellent picture, good sound quality, and subtitles! The Mummy tape that I own is near perfect.)
Step 3: Connecting the VCR to Your TV
For this step, you’re going to want a coaxial cable and a set of RCA cables (the red, yellow, and white ones). If your TV doesn’t have an RCA input, you’ll also need an RCA-to-HDMI converter. If your TV also doesn’t have an HDMI input for whatever reason, you’re shit out of luck.
Tumblr media
You’ll plug these cables into the “out” or “out to tv” connection on your VCR, then plug the other end into the back of your TV.
Note: Not all VCRs have right audio (the red one)! That’s fine. Just leave it hanging free. The left audio (white) is your mono audio, so you’ll just have that instead.
Lastly, put the channel switch on the back of your VCR on 3 or 4. I keep mine on 3. This is the number for the channel you’ll go to on your TV to actually see what the VCR is playing.
Step 4: Setting up the TV
I use a little Roku TV, which is surprisingly steady to set up for VCR input:
Settings ➡️ TV Inputs ➡️ Live TV
From here, you’ll either be prompted to scan for channels OR you’ll have to select “scan for antenna channels”. It will ask you if you want to have channels 3 and 4, to which you’ll say “yeah, I do want channels 3 and 4” and click the button that lets you have channels 3 and 4. If you don’t have an antenna, you can skip the other prompts.
I haven’t done this on any other type of TV, but the process should be pretty similar: get yourself to channels 3 and 4 through whatever means necessary.
Once you’re there, it should look like this. Sad, blank, and lonely. But not for long.
Tumblr media
Step 5: Playing Your Tapes
This is where things can go really really well or really really wrong. If everything is hooked up, you can grab your shitty tape and insert it into the VCR.
(Make sure there isn’t anything else in there first, though. Some people don’t remove their precious Titanic copies before donating these things.)
Tumblr media
You’ll want a tape that’s fairly clean, with no casing damage, and already rewound (black tape in the left window). To insert the tape into a front-loading VCR, slowly and firmly slide it into the slot. Once it’s most of the way in, the machine should “grab” it and pull it all the way inside. You’ll hear the machine make some noises.
(If those noises are really crunchy, that’s probably not a good thing. Troubleshoot with your favorite search engine or head over to r/VHS to see if anyone can help you.)
Once your machine is only making some clunky whirring sounds, it should be safe to press the play button. Enjoy watching your favorite films in the least pleasant format possible. Don’t forget to rewind em when you’re done.
Tumblr media
If you have issues, the freaks over at r/VHS tend to be really helpful, but you can also find decade-old YouTube videos that might answer your questions too.

today’s educational and demystifying post: How DO you connect a record player or turntable to a computer so you can rip vinyl?
Or for that matter, listen to records through your PC speakers. If this isn’t of interest to you, continue scrolling. If it is, click on thru to the other side...
Where does one get a thingie that plays records? You can go the cheap route and find one in a thriftstore, you can go the pricey route and buy one new, you can go the upper-mid-range route and find one at a used record store (at least you’re more certain than at a thrift that the thing will work!) -- or you can cheat the system a bit by buying one of those all-in-one record/tape/CD/radio setups that look like an old cabinet, branded with Crosley or Intelligent Technology or the like, and see what options it has for output (two RCA output jacks and/or a headphone jack), which often costs less than just a turntable alone.
Can we even do this? It’s fair to say that not every record player can be connected to anything at all if it has built-in speakers. Many, though, have a headphone jack that when plugged into will shut off the speakers, so that’s one way. Turntables meanwhile always have some way to connect to a stereo system, specifically the coaxial connectors known as RCA plugs, and occasionally have a headphone jack also. The RCA plugs are usually color coded red and white for the left and right channels, though nothing’s going to explode if you switch them. :) Here’s what the RCA plugs from a turntable look like next to the RCA input jacks on the back of my stereo receiver:
Tumblr media
So how do I get the record player connected to my computer? Let’s look at the computer first... There’s a microphone jack on the computer, on the back or possibly you have a second one on the front of a desktop machine, or on a notebook there’s a jack on the side, and many are color-coded pink. (Additionally there may be a blue color-coded jack next to it labelled Line In. It does the same thing but at a different volume level and that’s what I use on my notebook because something’s wonky about my mike input.) Now let’s look at whatever you’re playing a record on... If it only has a headphone jack, you can use one of those plug-to-plug cables ($8 at Walmart, $1 at Dollar Tree) that have become popular for playing music from your cell phone or MP3 player through the Auxillary jack of your car’s radio. [left] If it has RCA plugs, there are handy adaptors (two styles are shown here) to shift from RCA jacks to a headphone plug. [right] 2-RCA-jacks-to-1/8″-stereo-plug adaptors are available online or you might find one at a thriftstore or electronics store like BestBuy.
Tumblr media
So plug the headphone cable into the record player’s headphone jack OR plug the two RCA plugs into the adaptor, and then stick the other end of the wire you’re holding into the computer’s microphone jack (or Line In). Now you are set!
(If you want to/can get a little more snazzy -- useful for adjusting volume and balance, the use of an equalizer, and some bonus effects like Bass Boost and Surround Sound -- here’s how I have my home setup: The turntable is connected to the RCA inputs on my stereo receiver, and I’ve run a cable from the receiver’s headphone jack to the computer’s input jack.)
Okay, so now what do I do on the computer? It’d take a longer post to explain every last detail fully, but you can shortcut past most of this by using the controls in the sound editor program Audacity, which you’ll probably want to be using anyway. (Nothing against any of its rivals like Magix Audio Cleaning Lab, which I also use for its various effects, but Audacity is very easy to understand for the process of ripping music from vinyl.) Let’s set Windows up to use the turntable as an input device now. In the latest version of Audacity, here’s the toolbar at the top:
Tumblr media
First thing, choose the source (as shown). The above presumes that we’re using the frontside microphone jack on my computer; if the plug were in the backside Line In jack, that would be another option listed. Now we need to get the input sound level set. I’m going to put a record on and drop the needle in some random location; in the control buttons on the left I click Pause then click Record (just like a tape recorder!) so the input volume will be dynamically displayed without starting a recording:
Tumblr media
The green ever-shifting bars in the input meter show that audio is coming into the sound card indeed, so that part was successful. Right in the middle (over the number 30) is the thumb for adjusting the input level -- if the bars weren’t going far on the scale, I’d move the thumb to the right to make it more sensitive, and if the bars were all the way to the right, I’d move the thumb to the left until the bars were maxing out between 6 and 12 on the scale, the yellow zone of the meter, because you don’t want it to be overloud (that’s called ‘clipping’; you can use the software to amplify not-loud-enough sound so being in the midrange is best). Once you have the input level corrected, now’s when you should adjust the output sound -- the standard Windows way, by clicking the speaker icon next to the clock to move the slider -- so you can hear it at your comfort level, and it doesn’t affect the volume of the audio files you create.
Okay, you can click the Stop button now that you have the input and output sound levels set, or you can restart the record where you want to begin and unpause. How to rip, edit, and save music is a different post. :)
What if I don’t hear what’s playing but Audacity shows the sound is working correctly? Also: Can I play vinyl and have the sound come through my PC speakers without being in a sound editor program? Input audio playing through the speakers is a function of Windows’ Sound control panel, the exact location of the toggle varies between versions, but here’s a screencap of what’s what in Windows 10:
Tumblr media
Path here: Sound control panel, under Input the Microphone is selected so click Device Properties, then the window shifts to the Device Properties list; under Related Settings click Additional Device Properties, a new dialog pops up with four tabs, and under the Listen tab check “Listen to this device”. Also available here is the Levels tab, which is the place you’d be adjusting the recording level manually if you didn’t do it through Audacity as explained a minute ago.
A protip: It’s probably best to be listening through headphones, rather than using your computer’s speakers at normal volume, when ripping so you hear better sound quality as you work as well as so the playback sound doesn’t bleed/echo into the recording, because needles are fairly sensitive. Yes, I have an MP3 of Thompson Twins’ “Hold Me Now (Extended Version)” where you can hear me lean back in my creeky desk chair during a quiet passage...
So now you know how to physically set up a record player to your computer and how to get the computer to use the record player as an audio input!

You said you have a collection of old electronics, can you show some?
I can! It’s very small and not that impressive but i’m a bit of a nerd. (It’s…. It’s all Nintendo lol and not old old)
FIRST OFF MY CONSOLES
Tumblr media
I personally own
An original gameboy i recently got from a family member because they were clearing out stuff and knew i liked old stuff. It’s coroded and needs a good clean for it to properly work again but I honestly just want it for show because i own the gba sp which hurts my eyes less.
My gameboy advance sp i have owned since i was little this thing is a champ! It doesn’t power on normally and i have to do a whole start up ritual but she’s strong!
Then we have my ds lite. Iiii used to own like 3 of these but my last remaining one recently decided it had seen enough and …. Snapped in two. It survived a very rough life for a while i was an extremely clumsy kid and that thing got dropped… so often. I actually managed to score this new one for like 25 euro’s at a con. Cuz it didn’t come with a charger or stylus, but thankfully i own plenty of stylus’s. And another fender SOLD THE CHARGERS FOR CHEAP! I also got 2 games and ended up with a whole new ds lite for like 50 euro’s!
And finally my baby my problem child… my new 3ds xl. I was originally gonna get a 3ds for my birthday but when at the store the guy told us that if we waited just a little the new 3ds would actually come out so waiting for that would probably be better (and more expensive) so we did! This bad boi has survived sooo long. The paint on the back started to chip so I actually got an accessory that works as a stand and a hand grip so your hands don’t cramp up. and it has had a screen replacement and a joystick replacement. But he’s still going strong!
I also own a switch but it’s not really old and didn’t have it on hand.
Next up the games
Tumblr media
I got these with the og game boy i got from family so tbh they aren’t my choices tbf
Out of all of these I’m probably the most interested in kirby. So these are also more to look at in comparison to my other games.
Tumblr media
Then we have my gba games! And Pokémon silver but I couldn’t find it.
First up my copy of Pokémon fire red! I got it for cheap plated it a bit then restarted and for a second I thought my screen had finally quit life because i was face to face with a yellow ratata THANKFULLY I actually like ratata and raticate on my team so i threw a ball at it… only to be transported to the pokedex menu and go…. Wait a minute…OH MY GOD! So I accidentally caught a shiny 😅 i named her Shimmer and haven’t touched that save file since.
Then we have 2 games I bought PURELY for nostalgia
A barbie game to get hyped for the barbie movie
And disney princess royal adventure I LOVE THAT GAME honestly if anyone wants to just play a feel good cozy walking game with little minigames this is such a nice game the graphics are fantastic and it’s just soooooo cozy (it is a glorified walking sim though…. It’s mostly walking walking and more walking)
A true delight tho!
Next up
Tumblr media
DS GAMES here my true personality shows!
Pony friend and professor layton I owned since i was little and I finally completed professor Laytona few years ago! I’m not a puzzle person but godddd i love prof layton games!
Furthermore lps beach friends, lps garden and style boutique are recent purchases!
I got back into lps a while ago and am very excited for the new 2024 peta but they made me soooo nostalgic for the games so at a local con I basically ordered my friends to help me look for the games! I ended up finding lps beach friends together with style boutique another franchise i adore and later purchased lps garden online! The games are great! You also may have burned down a bakery in the friend’s series BUTTT THATS NOT IMPORTANT lol
Style boutique I purchased because i am on a quest i’m on the hunt TO OWN EVERY VERSION i own 1 and 3(technically 4) so i just need NEW style boutique and new style boutique 2!
And finally
Tumblr media
The 3ds games (i also used to own Skylanders trap team 3ds but I LOST THE GAME)
Not including tomodatchi life and new style boutique 3
I was a Pokémon guy i loved it a lot
Pokemon x y is definitely my favorite from the 3ds era… not cuz it’s good…. But because lysandre and sycamore are just the best characters pokemon has eve made lol and i can see the potential in it (also furfrou my favorite Pokémon)
Oras is definitely the game i replay the most because it is a really good game
I love moon and ultra moon a lot aswell!
Zelda actually funny enough i … ended up bugging the game so hard in the first 30 minutes of playing…. I hard locked the game and I couldn’t progress 😅 that’s ehen I knew I wasn’t a zelda guy
And monster hunter story OMG ITS SO GOOD the anime was better at the execution of the story BUT THE GAMEE OOOOOOOOOO i wanna replay it so bad BUT I’M SO ATTACHED TO MY CHARACTER I JUST CANT RESET he’s my boi! MY SON!! I love the game and I’m playing 2…. But i never finished it due to reasons but from what i did play ITS GOOD but it destroyed the ending of the first anddd i dont like that.
Also i’m so excited for fashion dreamer to come out and i will get it(probably for Christmas as a little treat) and i will be super inspired and use it as outfit inspiration forrr my winx stuff! So that’s exciting!
I would own a lot more old old stuff if it wasn’t for the fact that static hurts my ears and my eyeballs also don’t like old screens SO MOSTLY JUST MY NINTENDO STUFF cuz i was the Nintendo kid from my town. My brother had a playstation my neighbors a pc and a close friend and xbox the great divide!
My favorite playstation game was tony hawk pro skater 2 lol
BUT THATS ALL FOR NOW THIS WAS SUPER LONG OKI BYE!

hi! i hope this message finds you well. i have a question regarding photography, if you don’t mind me asking!
i’m looking to get a point and shoot film camera and was wondering if there are any models in particular that you’d recommend. a lot of suggestions i see online are quite expensive for a beginner, and the reviews are usually coming from experienced photographers detailing things i don’t quite understand lol. i don’t know what i should be looking for!
your photographs are so beautiful and inspiring. thank you <3
first of all, thank you for the compliment <33
if you're just starting out, i would noooot get any of the commonly recommended cameras because they're way too pricy. what you need to keep in mind is that these point-and-shoots from the 80s-2000s are eventually bound to fail because of the electronics, so spending too much money on something that will be a brick someday is not necessary, especially if you might just want to play around. i use a canon prima 5 (i think it's called a sureshot in the us) that i got for 25€ from some random person on ebay, not knowing if it would work, and it's great. so, don't listen to the hype (if you're gonna drop hundreds to thousands on a camera, it shouldn't be a point and shoot lol).
it's hard to give specific recs as there are soooo many p&s cameras on the vintage market, and even i don't know every brand on there. it's good to remember that these cameras were the go-to for most families in the 90s and early 2000s, so there's a wide variety from cheap garbage to premium quality, and it's hard to distinguish which are which. instead of specific models, i would think of what kind of things you want. for example, i knew i didn't want a super wide angle lens, i wanted a flash i could turn on and off, and i wanted a fixed focal length (no zoom) and decent aperture. this narrowed down my choices quite a lot. is it going to just be a camera for snapshots or do you want to really practice some serious photography? if the latter, a point and shoot is okay but not ideal, and you will get much more out of a cheap slr. however, for the former, a point and shoot can be nice.
you can go for one of the well known brands (canon, nikon, olympus, pentax, yashica, minolta), although cheaper cameras can also be fine. usually, the zoom models will be much cheaper than fixed lens versions. the trendier and sleeker something looks, the more expensive it will be. so, if you want to save money, get a camera that looks like what your parents would have used on a vacation lol. what i would look for is detailed descriptions of the functions, ideally it's been film tested and even better when they attach pictures of the test roll. you can usually tell the difference between someone that's just selling a camera they know nothing about (descriptions will be very basic and have little detail) and someone who's knowledgable (they might say why they're getting rid of the camera, for example). another tip if you want to be on the safe side is to buy from commercial sellers on ebay; at least in germany, you can return it if it doesn't work within a specific time window. so, if you buy a camera, shoot a test film and get it developed asap to see if everything's in order.
however, if you want to save yourself all the trouble of finding a used, vintage camera (although they will probably be better quality than anything new), there are some companies making basic point and shoot cameras. the caveat here is that they're usually not super capable, they might be half-frame cameras (you get double amount of pics but the quality won't be as high), and the lenses are likely made of plastic, meaning the quality won't be on the same level of a decent vintage point and shoot. however, the upside is that you can comfortably buy them in stores and you can be assured they work. there's the kodak m35, ilford sprite 35 and one from agfaphoto. however, if you're hunting for the more "cheap" p&s film look and just want something easy and simple, one of these may be the right choice for you. however, i'm not convinced they will last as long as a vintage p&s, considering the price.
i hope this helped, but let me know if you have more questions!

Why is it virtually impossible to find DVDs of Russell Crowe’s Robin Hood on the cheap?
I didn’t find one in my local used electronics store, and trying to find regular DVDs online get stupidly fucking expensive, or just impossible.
I might go to Chester tomorrow to kill some personal time, and I’ll have a look there for one.

saw you in the notes of some post saying you work in finance. like, no pressure, and i'm not expecting any depth from a tumblr ask, but... do you have any advice for people living paycheck to paycheck other than the classic "make a budget"? (i have already discovered that getting a credit card does not help.)
just wondering if there's anything you've learned from your profession that you wish was better known to the public
https://undebt.it/ is a big help to help pay off debt efficiently undebt it - google search if you don’t like hitting links - I don’t hitting links. I have a super hard time with budgets myself. And credit cards are rough - I get manic and then my budget friendly self can’t keep up with manic me.
Apologies in advance if some of this is like bro - I don’t live a place w these stores - just mentally replace store names with what’s around you.
If your debt has an interest rate under 7%, pay the minimums because a lot of investments will grow at 7% or better (common examples - car loans, most student loans, mortgages, etc.). Typically it’s better to focus on the higher interest loans/debt first. If it’s above 7%, prioritize that. A lot of minimum payments will also never pay off your debt - designed to keep you in it.
If you have a Roth option in your work retirement account, do that. It’s taxed now instead of in retirement - taxes only go up over time. However if you need to reduce your taxable income, then pretax dollars will do that. Only contribute up to the match if it’s not Roth. If it’s pretax, then you usually only want do up to the match. Maximize the free money you can get from your employer.
Always opt into long term disability insurance at work. When you can afford some extra coverage check out supplemental (most employers offer 60% in the US - if you only were paid 60% of your income it would be rough), life insurance is cheap - 200k is a small policy. The company you go with matters. A company like mass mutual or northwestern mutual (I’m at northwestern) gives higher dividends- basically a good chunk of profit goes back to policy holders instead of stockholders. Most companies can run company comparisons. Insurance pays for financial security. It’s not a scam - which is genuinely what I thought of it before I got into the field and understood it better.
Whole life insurance costs more - but it’s worth it. It’s like buying your insurance instead of renting. Again company matters - example: northwestern mutual cash value grows historically at 5% on average, give or take, usually give. It’s money you can use to collateralize a loan or take a loan out against your own policy and “be your own bank” - downside, if finances are unstable, it’s a policy with regular premiums. Unlike a Roth you can stop contributing to any time, you’re paying for coverage and it’s monthly or whatever interval without much for exceptions. Probably not a good fit for you right now with being paycheck to paycheck - but something to keep in mind for the future.
Some of my hacks for my own life and my tight budget - I get most of my stuff off of Facebook marketplace for free or cheap - if you search something for a week or two and save the cheap items eventually they’ll appear for free or less and less. You just gotta be quick to ask and pick up. I picked up a stand alone pantry cabinet yesterday for free so now I have more storage space for non-perishables. Also if you just always keep free and “curb alert” as a regular search item you’ll find good stuff. I’ve picked up some things that I know have value near me - like fish tanks with stands only to resell them later at market value which is higher because I’m in a city/suburban outskirts - I only deal in cash on Facebook because they wanna start tracking and people can’t rescind a $20 electronically.
There are food shelves that don’t require minimums. There’s also no shame in seeing if you can get assistance from the government. If you can boost yourself to live better, do it.
The dollar tree (and some other dollar stores) - while most food at the dollar tree isn’t a good deal - I’ve also found shelf stable tofu, pesto, mustard (1.25 vs $5 for pesto). I also have pets - my cats get their toys on a stick with the dangly strings from the dollar tree. I get all of my cleaning products at the dollar tree. You can also make your own - one super simple one is lemon juice (from bottle), white vinegar, and water.
I shop at specific places for specific items. I get carbon litter box filters at my hardware store because they’re a dollar there instead of $5-7 elsewhere.
I order my groceries online - it’s convenient but it also eliminates a lot of impulse shopping. I pay $10/month for it, but I save more than $10 in not impulse buying.
I mostly avoid target - target has done research on how to get you to buy more - it works. So I avoid it. Not that other stores don’t do similarly, but I know that I will fail myself at target - sort of a figure out your vices.
I shop at discount grocery stores. I got to Asian grocery stores for tea because I get way more tea for way less. I go to Aldi for most of my vegetarian foods and also their chicken. Most of their stuff is a fair bit cheaper and I’ve figured out which off brand or Aldi brand stuff I like.
I work in a super fancy office - think of a building with literal halls with marble tile. I get 99% of my clothes from thrift stores. I’m picky - I try to buy only things that I feel good in (not I feel okay, but I feel good) and I have a hard time pushing myself over $10 for almost anything. I dress with a classic style because then I don’t have to chase trends. I mostly just wear black pants and a shirt that looks business casual.
Garage sale - I spent a Saturday driving around the town I grew up in going to garage sales. Saturdays are usually the last day sales are open - they want stuff gone as the reality sets in that whatever isn’t sold is being donated. I filled a paper grocery bag full of clothing for my spouse and paid $1. I’ve hit sales where the person just wanted to be done and said just take everything you want, free. I haggle. I ask if they’d do a deal for a bunch of stuff if it’s a good sale. If there’s something I’m looking for or need - I know the value of the item before I go shopping and I know the value of it to me. I wanted a giant bean bag chair. I valued that at a maximum of $20. The going Facebook marketplace was $50-150. I held out and got one for $7 at a thrift store.
Sign up for VIP stuff at thrift stores and reward programs (assuming it’s free). Don’t buy most holiday decor new - thrift stores can barely sell a christmas tree.
Home Depot and many hardware stores offer free how-to classes - you want to learn how to lay tile? Sign up for a class. Learn to diy what you’re comfortable doing. Some labor and know how is worth paying for. Example: I will not lay tile because I can live with a crooked tile if someone else did it. I can’t if I did it. For my sanity, I would pay for that. Minding - I need that done currently and can’t afford it so it’s just not on the reality list.
Grow some of your own food if you can. Grow lights can be cheap and seeds are cheap. Sometimes you can split a pack with a friend. You can also get free pots and gardening materials online easily. Maybe not the seeds tho. If you hate gardening then don’t bother. What you want matters too.
When you buy stuff - make sure you love it when you can. Stuff you love, you will keep and use. Stuff you feel so-so about might end up being donated next year.
Utilize libraries! They have e-books also and there are so many free apps you can download to read them on. If I’m only gonna read a book once, then I shouldn’t own it. Reality is - I don’t reread that many books. Too many more books to read.
If you’re into cold brew coffee - dark roast Walmart makes just as good as a fancy brand that costs more. Try off brand stuff - it’s often way better or exactly the same. Walmart chips ahoy offbrand is better than chips ahoy. ALDIs version of coconut caramel Girl Scout chocolate cookies taste the same as Girl Scout ones but cost under $2.
Find hobbies that don’t cost you money or cost you very little money. Aquarium fish are not that hobby as I’ve learned the hard way. But I have a beautiful dr who tank so at least there’s that. I volunteered for a while with shelter cats - the ones that are in pet stores. I got kitty snuggles and got to put it on my resume. Can’t afford a pet but want one? Foster - the shelter pays for everything. One of my new hobbies is literally finding free things on Facebook marketplace. It’s great.
If you’re on meds and insurance isn’t covering everything - check out goodrx. Also - check different pharmacies and keep checking. CVS wanted $300 for 1 month of my depression meds. I walked away w/o meds. I went to Costco a week later (no membership needed for specifically their pharmacy) and got those same meds for maybe $10 without insurance.
YouTube can also teach you neat skills. Tumblr can too - I got really into tiny homes - still love them but I can’t ethically keep a Great Dane mix and all my cats in a tiny space - a big part of tiny homes is making sure you have what you need but you have it smart. I gleaned a lot from that obsession. How to have a full wardrobe w 30 pieces of clothing but still variety? It showed it. Most tiny home people are about financial freedom - a lot of them perhaps don’t have a financial background, but it’s about gathering info that works for you.
If you have kids - I do not - but I have a niece. So much free stuff from other people. I think I gave my sister in law about the first years worth of clothing for her kid and it mostly cost me some laundry soap and time with marketplace and stopping for bags of free kids clothes on the side of the road (that I then picked through, washed, and donated the iffy ones). I even got a bouncer thingy that I took apart and cleaned and gave her. Plus a stroller for my mother in law - one of those $300 ones that someone just wanted gone at no cost.
I’ve got home owner savings tricks too if you need them - but let’s be honest, few of us can afford homes. I have one in a super sketchy area that has shot spotter tech to help police respond faster to gunfire. But honestly just lucked out and fell into the job I have now.
Buy quality when you can - I got clearance Clark’s brand shoes for my job - I think they cost me $40? They’ve lasted years. I got thrift store shoes and they are falling apart in less than a year. Those same thrift store shoes during the 5 years that I’ve had my clearance Clark’s would have cost more to replace that 5x over.
Make sure you’re taking care of yourself - eat enough, sleep enough. Your health will affect how you work and live - you matter. I do premier protein shakes in the morning so I get enough protein and also account for my inability to wake up with enough time to make food. I try to bring my lunch to work. Peanut butter sandwiches are a big go-to for me. I’m rather sick of them, but for now, it helps me to save a bit and prioritize things that are more important to me.
I’m trying to think of other stuff. I mean maybe you’re already doing a big load of this or have even cut some of these expenses out. I’ve got more pet saving tricks - pets are something in life that bring me so much joy and happiness so I have them and I try to be responsible and smart with spending on them - but maybe you don’t have pets or don’t want them. I love video games so I have a few systems - mainly PC. I wait for sales for games. I still buy things that are discretionary. I buy “what I want” when I can but I try to make sure it really is something that I want. I wait for game reviews to come out.
I try to find easy recipes online with a focus on budget friendly and quick to make. Preferably with leftovers to avoid a peanut butter sandwich for a day or two. I’m in a Facebook group called “what broke vegans eat.” I go to a butcher to get ground beef because it costs the same but has less gristle and they can give me tips on making different things. Plus I can occasionally splurge on something simple - they have the best in house take home and bake lasagna which last me at least 4-5 days between my spouse and I.
What field are you job-wise? What field or kind of work would you want to be in if you could choose? What kind of hours would you prefer to work? Education level? Are you in the US? Might have some tips around that too. Is there an area you want advice on - like X costs so much, what tips do you have for cost savings with that, etc.
So happy to help. Sorry for the novel.

Which soldering iron do you have?
the 8 dollar one didn't have any branding on it, and was just a 40wt with a chisel tip. uh It super melted itself. those uber cheap irons are made for small electronics projects and are really only meant to be used a few minutes at a time. Stained glass just requires them to be on and at max blast for way too long.
the one i use now is a Weller WLC200 80wt. but I got it off a friend who was upgrading her own iron. it works really well, but it isn't made anymore. there's a newer model available for 70$ but you Super don't need to spend that much. Weller is a good brand and they make stuff for specific for stained glass, but any 60wt+ irons with an external rheostat/soldering stand thing and a chisel tip will work.
if you're anywhere near a large city toss 'stained glass store (city name)' in the search engine and look for a place thatll sell you supplies. They'll probably be able to point you in the right direction and hook you up for cheaper than you would be able to online

Cyberpunk Helsinki Player Character Overview
Started playing a Cyberpunk 2020 campaign with the gfs. The setting is modified, and the campaign takes place in Helsinki, in the mostly-lawless Humanitarian Zone.
The characters:
Maxx Machina is the group's Solo. She was an edgerunner until she lost her team. She cashed out, got a mindwipe, and moved to the HZ. She's been making ends meet as a bouncer, and has befriended the elderly couple who run the convenience store near her, the Parks. She has a pair of cyberarms from military service, and has fitted one of them with a DIY cybergun because she felt like it was Missing somehow. She lives in a tiny apartment and drives a shitty van, both of which the party make ample use of. (She got the van cheap from a liquidating sex shop. She painted over the old design, but it's still visible. She tells herself she'll deal with it. The check engine light has been on since she got it and she's afraid to check it.) She is a fucking UNIT and is one of the more functional party members. (I am playing Maxx)
Loco Supreme is an acrobatic courier with cyberlegs. She and her mom were hit by a minibus, and she turned to the local mob to handle the medical bills. Her mom is in stable care, but Loco works as a thief and a courier to repay her debt. She occasionally records her routes and posts them online (Streaming doesn't exist, but she wishes it did). She met Maxx by attempting to pickpocket her. Maxx more or less adopted her, and Loco often crashes at her apartment. She's a gremlin with a tendency to wander.
Astrid "Citrene" Siren is our Fixer. She's a rich, fast-talking socialite with a fixation on woo, especially crystals and rocks, which she will share with anyone whose vibe she wishes to improve. Her parents don't much like her, and her business school professors don't approve of her (lack of) method, but her stonk witchcraft is the only thing keeping her family afloat. Though she comes from a nicer corpo neighbourhood, she prefers couch-surfing and clubbing in the HZ, and is another frequent resident of Maxx's apartment. She is not especially tech-literate, and still uses AOL. She's not all there, but what's there is pretty good.
Cordoba Bloodbath is our Techie. She's a resident of the rough end of the rough end of town, Wall Street. She lives up in a shack, the few utilities she has access to are rerouted from other dwellings. Cordoba thinks she's cut from a different cloth than most people, and that she just hasn't gotten her big break yet. She befriended a sick, retired techie, and he mentored her in surveillance, security, electronics, and software as thanks for looking after him. Neither would admit it, but they both appreciated the kindness. After parting ways with the old man, she started taking work, either through his contacts, or her own searches. She only has one drone, but it's a drone that's seen ample use. She met the group after Citrene put out feelers for a budget drone surveillance service. She thinks she has to be scary and dangerous to have agency and respect, and tries very hard to look it, with mixed success. Maxx chauffeurs her in the van.

Where is the cheapest place to buy wholesale?
Purchasing in bulk, you may obtain incredible deals on almost any kind of product. Many fantastic websites offer fantastic discounts, either from the manufacturer directly or through wholesalers who primarily market to other businesses.
A corporation that purchases products directly from manufacturers and resells them to retailers for a profit is known as a wholesale supplier.
Some sites demand hefty minimum requirements for bulk purchases if you're interested in stocking an online business. Others provide discounted prices so you can get ordinarily exorbitantly priced household goods or devices at considerably lesser costs.
Alibaba
The world's biggest retailer and e-commerce corporation are the Chinese multinational Alibaba. Alibaba is one of the most well-known Chinese e-commerce sites on the internet and is well-known for offering services for business-to-business (B2B), business-to-consumer (B2C), and consumer-to-consumer (C2C) transactions. Like other major e-commerce platforms, Alibaba is a group of independent vendors selling their goods on the network. The difference with Alibaba is that many vendors are also producers, which accounts for why there are so many bulk items and why prices tend to be lower than elsewhere.
However, you can purchase a reduced minimum order size or a single item if you're ready to pay a little extra. On Alibaba, the minimum orders frequently exceed those on other bulk wholesale marketplaces.
DHgate
Another Chinese online store focusing on B2B and B2C services is DHgate. Most of the vendors on DHgate are small to medium-sized Chinese businesses that provide goods at wholesale prices.
Although DHgate doesn't have quite as many options as Alibaba, it nevertheless provides a huge selection of cheap products that can be purchased in large quantities. Clothing, fashion accessories, technology, and outdoor equipment are some of its most well-liked product categories. The cost of an item is determined by how many units you order; larger orders generally result in lower prices.
Consumers typically have a better experience on DHgate than other sizable wholesale websites like Global Sources and Alibaba. One difference is that ordering is a little friendlier now. You must contact the vendor directly to place an order on Alibaba and Global Sources. On DHgate, you can place an online order, similar to other well-known e-commerce sites like Amazon.
The fact that DHgate frequently has products available with a cheaper minimum order than Alibaba does is another benefit of using it. While many of the vendors on Alibaba demand that you purchase hundreds, or perhaps even thousands, of things when placing an order, many companies on DHgate request that you purchase between 10 and 20 items.
Costco
Costco is an excellent choice if you want to buy a quantity of plastic, paper, and grocery items for your home or place of business. Nearly anything you can imagine is on sale at the big box wholesale warehouse club, including apparel, travel accessories, and electronics. However, most of the bulk commodities are food and household goods.
The quick shipping times offered by Costco's website are a fantastic perk.
Are you trying to find wholesale Vendors? Select ByzChat We help companies alter their marketing, sales, and operational strategies to increase productivity. We offer the technological foundation and marketing reach that merchants, brands, retailers, and other companies need to take advantage of modern technology's ability to engage users and consumers and run more effectively.

@lightningboltreader asked me what my story with Delta is and it got too long to put it in the comments so I made a post about it and I’ve tried to put it under the cut if you wanna read it, but it didn't work, so sorry for everyone who has to scroll past this 😅
Edit: I figured it out (grandma at work) 😂
I discovered Delta in 2004 when she released Out of the Blue, a single from her second album. Had never heard of her before but I really liked the song and the music video (still a thing on TV at the time) and because she wasn’t really popular in Germany that album was pretty cheap from the start and music/electronic stores had this section with lower priced cds (I think they started at like 3,99 and went up to 9,99) so I got that second album and I LOVED IT SO MUCH!!!!
Almost here was the next single I think and it was with Brian MCFadden from Westlife who she was in a relationship with and I liked the song and I became obsessed with them as a couple and her individually. So I started looking at fan pages online and read like every article that was released etc.
And it kinda just grew from there. She takes for fucking ever to release new music and I think by the time the next album came around online streaming and watching music on YouTube was a thing and buying music on iTunes happened so I believe I haven’t bought a physical album since that second one (I bought the first one sometime after the second one).
And I’ve always wanted to go see her live, ever since I first started going to concerts in my late teens. I’ve watched her concerts on YouTube & bought the last one on Apple TV and they always looks so much fun and she seems so amazing live. But she never comes to Europe it feels like and when she does she goes to the UK and you basically only hear about it when it’s happening or after it happened and I always found that really frustrating.
Fast forward to the end of 2018 when my friend was asking me if I wanted to go to Australia with her once she finishes college in 2020 and I was like yeah let’s do it (for a lot of different reasons but also) ITS FINALLY MY CHANCE TO SEE DELTA! So we planned and I was supposed to go 2/3 month before her because she had to wrap some things up and didn’t want to stay for a whole year like I did and then Covid happened, I got in three days before the borders closed, she didn’t and I had tickets for Deltas tour but that got postponed so nothing happened and I was SO SAD!!!
Long story short: it’s been a million years and I am so happy I finally get to see her live!!! 🤩
