Escapade Dance Party 2023 Writeup 2/3

Here is the playlist I ended up with this year, plus my commentary:

First Half

Good Omens | Running in the 90's by Maria Morningstar

Good Omens is so tricky. On the one hand, there are a billion fantastic vids, many with editing that's better than this one. On the other, a lot of the preferred music is syrupy and slow, and GO fans are actively seeking out vids and have already seen many of the ones intended for cons in the English-speaking world.

I wanted something high-energy to open the dance with, and this ridiculous song fit the bill. It woke people up and got them noticing the music had started.

I don't know Maria, but her channel has a bunch of things with cyrillic titles, so I'm guessing she's Russian. That meant a higher chance of this vid being new to people at Escapade.

Tubthumping by Aaronantium

To be perfectly honest, I do not care about this anime, but I was chilling with Aaron at Vidders Chat and discussing my plans, and he offered to make me a vid for his vampire fandom.

I don't generally accept premieres because it means wrangling more people and dealing with uncertainty, but Aaron suggested this song, and it's always a crowd pleaser as is the vid everyone makes to it. This fandom is also unusually perfect for said joke, featuring as it does a repeatedly dying vampire who… well… gets back up again.

Actually, despite it not being most people's fandom, I think this vid got one of the biggest laughs and reactions of anything during the party.

Kirk/Spock | I Knew You Were Trouble by mogo nit

K/S is a perennial favorite with con attendees—more TOS but AOS too. I don't recall why I was specifically looking for it this year. Probably, it ranked best out of things people mentioned on their site profiles.

This is an old-ass vid from 10 years ago, so if people have seen it, they probably haven't seen it lately. It's also a song I love, cliched though it might be for vids.

Word of Honor - Wenzhou - Hit and Run by CelestialMoonDragon

I knew I wanted to include WoH, both for its many fans and for people still dragging their feet about checking out Asian live action m/m stuff. The fandom has a wealth to choose from from vidders all over the globe. The big issue was simply finding vids that weren't too plastered with show audio.

When I heard this song choice, however, I knew it was the one. WoH has some unusual genre elements for wuxia, specifically all the central government focus where wuxia characters usually stay away from politics. The song really highlights that aspect. Those lyric matches! Genius!

Obviously, if I was going to celebrate the new IWTV, I couldn't leave out the old movie!

This is a brilliant song choice given what happens to Lestat. It's interesting to me how many Chinese vidders use music I know well. It's always fun to see what they do with a Western source and Western music, and I think bilibili is largely uncharted territory for most Escapade attendees.

The Sentinel still has monofannish fans, but covering it for a dance party is a pain in the butt. I generally end up scraping the depths of Bilibili, and this year was no exception…

So how excited was I to find this refreshing and freaky take! This audio is apparently from some short film and has become something of a meme amongst vidders, but I hadn't heard it before and I don't think anyone at the con had either.

It's always extra surprising and wonderful to find a more serious and darker vid for fandoms everyone associates with camp and retro cheese. The Sentinel fans I included it for were blown away too. It's apparently a pretty good representation of the episode in question.

Forever Knight Vampires | Darkness, Darkness | Gothic 90s by knightvision1228

Because I had the vampires theme, I made a huge list of vampire fandoms to try to include. Forever Knight was one of my fandoms of the 90s and very popular with het shippers and slashers alike. Finding a vid that didn't look like bad VHS transfer, however, was easier said than done.

This one won out for featuring a rare song from the FK soundtrack that was never released. The vid also showcases the main trio instead of just being Nick/Jeanette het.

Megatron x Optimus (Song: Wrecking Ball) by Mellew

We have a lot of Transformers fans, and it's always so hard to find something I can play in the dance party… well… something that's not a 10-minute compilation of explicit fan art to horny reggaeton. Personally, I'm all about that reggaeton, but I've been looking for actual shipper vids that are a little more representative and a little less likely to make the fans combust in embarrassment.

When I heard the song choice… well… no other vid could compete.

But don't let the literalism and hilarious if one-note joke fool you: this is a fantastically edited vid that makes excellent use of the song's varying tempo.

And yes, I made sure to loudly say "WHY ARE YOU ALL LAUGHING? THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS VID" as the vid started.

BakuDeku AMV - Lucky Strike by caliowl 333

Do I watch BNHA? No. Do people at the con watch BNHA? No. Do antis hate this ship? Absofuckinglutely YES!

I love stupid shonen nonsense, and this fandom provides it in spades. It took a while to find an AMV that wasn't littered with not only show audio but dubbed show audio. (What am I, an animal?!)

I also just really love this song for dance parties.

Dancing on My Own - Robyn (Izzy Hands Edit) by auxiliarywardrobe

OFMD is another tough one. It's not due to a lack of vids: if anything, there are too many. But so many aren't suitable for a dance party and many are already familiar to people.

While I did find this on AO3 (honestly nearly a requirement for finding non-show audio vids in this fandom), it hadn't gotten any attention from people I recognized as an Escapade type crowd.

I loved the indignity of pairing Izzy with this ridiculous song. OFMD was a little anodyne for me in some ways, so the sleazy obnoxiousness of Izzy is a welcome antidote to all of the fluff and angst vids about the main ship.

At the same time, I don't particularly ship Izzy with anybody. I enjoy watching him be miserable, and the song is actually quite a good lyrical match for his impotent frustration.

Do You Wanna Touch Me? [Fanvid] by resurrecho

Okay, this one is cheating on my own rules. I'm sure people had every opportunity to see it… But it's also a femslash vid that is very, very horny.

This one's for you ladies tired of ~dewy flower~ soft bullshit!

Cult of Dionysus - Leverage OT3 - Eliot/Parker/Hardison by leverage brain worms

Leverage remains a perennial favorite and the new show had attendees talking,  but people often request the same tired old vid choice. I went looking for something that hadn't been played at every con over and over.

I liked that this vid was relatively recent. The song with poly lyrics was a fun touch.

HeiHua FMV~|| Hei Ye falling for the Thorny Flower by Black Flower

When I saw this vid, I said to myself: I don't know who they are, but I ship them!

AND GUESS WHAT? SEEING THE SHOW DID NOT CHANGE THAT OPINION!

Yes, this vid is directly responsible for me watching all these DMBJ adaptations.

I knew a lot of Escapade attendees were vaguely familiar with Reunion because of Zhu Yilong, but I didn't think most had checked out the rest of DMBJ, and this vid was so diametrically opposite of both that adaptation and the vibe of the big ship that I knew I just had to include it.

But seriously, this vidder actually has an excellent grasp of narrative. Now that I've seen the show, some of this stuff is repurposed and out of context, but you wouldn't know it from the eyelines.

Cover Me - A Fanvid by TinTurtle

Ah, Pros. The Professionals has the most dedicated fans at Escapade, hands down. They keep the con afloat and keep their fandom vibrant even after decades. Finding a dance vid to include for them, however, is a bit of a trial.

Realistically, I'm never going to find a vid they haven't all seen unless I make it myself, so I look for songs with a better beat than the typical old fandom vids tend to have.

The Fanged Four - Play with Fire (BTVS/ATS) by SlayerVid

People were talking about the Buffyverse again this year. Was it an anniversary of some kind? I can't recall, but it's a big nostalgia fandom for a lot of attendees, and it's one of the bigger vampire fandoms, so I wanted to include it.

While there used to be a billion vids for Buffy and Angel, only a fraction of them are findable online now. I went hunting for something not by a con regular and with visual quality that would play okay on a projector.

This is a great song for its grinding beat, and the vid is both recent and features a variety of vampire characters.

BL | Mobu ✘ Kikuchi S2 || So What by rosenana708

I suspect I found it by looking for Kei x Yaku vids, but as soon as I spotted it, I knew it was a must-have.

Yes, this is full of stupid show audio, but too bad: Nobody at a slash or BL con should be allowed to escape without knowing that A Man Who Defies the World of BL exists.

The Locked Tomb | Fences (SPOILERS!) by peachy 💕

This fandom was the latest hot flavor for many and f/f to boot. I was skeptical about finding a vid, but what do you know!

After being pimped in by last year's vid find, I knew I wanted to include it again.

This music grabbed me by the throat. I'd never even heard of LÉON, but the soulful sound is perfect for this fandom.

Personal Jesus by killabeez

I desperately wanted a vid to this song. The cover isn't my fave, but I couldn't turn down the combo of a vampire fandom and this classic.

True, Killa isn't exactly obscure to anyone at Escapade, but this is a relatively less seen older vid and excellently edited.

BTS Vampire FMV | Bad Things (True Blood OP) by GoldenArmy7

I'm so clever.

Yes, this is mostly here so I can follow the True Blood vid with one to the True Blood theme song. Also to inflict BTS on people.

WEDNESDAY | “Sweet But Psycho” Netflix Serie [HD] by SHIK

There are like thirty vids to this fandom using this song. This one blew the others out of the water.

I'll be honest, everyone was trying to push Wednesday/Enid around the time of the con, and that ship is the most boring thing you could possibly take away from this show. I wanted a vid that showcased what's actually fun here, which is not sucking all the creepy out of an Addams Family adaptation, for fuck sake.

ALIEN SUPERSTAR | Wanda & Scarlet Witch by LittleLaceBoots

MCU is still big with attendees, but it's so sprawling that knowing what to choose is hard. I found this music choice quite interesting for how it showcases the weird schtick of this particular show.

A Cowboy's Love by lilly_the_kid

If there's one AO3 vidder I will always play, it's lilly_the_kid! I wanted something for Star Wars, and I wanted it to be slash. This classic and ridiculous vid fit the bill.

Is it appropriate for a dance party? It is IF I SAY IT IS!

Boss Bitch | Lan Wangji (陈情令 The Untamed FMV) by slowparade

Everyone vids this song, but this example is particularly great!

I like aspects of The Untamed a lot. Sadly, those aspects do not include the central ship. I'm always on the hunt for vids that actually work for me. This take on Lan Wangji is hilarious.

Geraskier - Fine By Me by CainnetreIt delights me to find vids to other versions of popular canons. This is such a classic slash vid. It's not particularly danceable, but it's so fun that I wanted to include it, so it needed to go at the end of a section. It's the kind of song you wave your beer around to.

sleepover headcanons for all the divisions ,, a/n : it's been.. a while!!! im sorry for taking such constant long breaks finding motivation to write has been getting quite hard as of recently. i tend to write more for fun than anything but i don't wanna be leaving my page dormant. here's the sillies as compensation for my absence ! word count : 1,437

01. BUSTER BROS

The brothers probably have a couple nights like this on weekends where they don't got much to do. Someone (that someone either being Ichiro or Jiro) would suggest they have a little sleepover where they whip out some sleeping bags and all chill out in the living room.

They'd pull out a couple of video games, Jiro and Saburo would begin arguing in the game, Ichiro ends up winning. They play a game on a console, Jiro and Saburo would begin arguing, Ichiro ends up winning. But when the pillow fight of the century happens, all hell breaks loose. Suddenly the living room is a war zone and the siblings are all out for blood

In the attempt at seeming as cool as can be for Ichiro, Jiro and Saburo probs don't realize that their older brother is landing all the big hits on them until they finally realize and team up on him. Ichiro is quite proud that they could work together even for such a thing like that

Winner of whatever board game they play chooses what they all order to eat

Ichiro can't help but excitedly show the others some cool clips from some new anime he's watched or a Miku mv (autistic ichiro cause i said so), at some point they'd all get together and probably laugh at shitty low quality shows

Jiro SWEARS that he will stay up the longest just to fall asleep the fastest, much to Ichiro and Saburo's humor

02. MAD TRIGGER CREW

One night the guys must have been out late and realized it would be most convenient to crash at whoever's place was closest, that being Jyuto's

Matching pajamas. Don't know who got them (maybe Rio tbh that would be adorable), don't know why. But matching pjs for everyone, Samatoki pretends to hate them but he can't help but like how soft and comfortable they are.

They'd end up chilling on some balcony in Jyuto's place as they have a smoke and just talk about whatever comes to mind.

They made sure that before getting there Samatoki suggested they ordered food so that they could hopefully avoid the inevitable cooking situation with Rio there seeing as he wouldn't wanna waste money on food. Thankfully Jyuto's fridge was just filled with cheese, so ordering food it is.

"How the fuck do you even make yourself meals???" Samatoki would ask with the most confused look ever.

"I tend to find some way to make it happen." Jyuto's response did nothing more than make things more confusing.

Best of all, they play Splatoon on Jyuto's Splatoon themed switch (i will not be convinced otherwise that at the MINIMUM 40% of the hypmic cast plays Splatoon

Honestly just a chill night overall, great bonding time for everyone other than the screaming in Splatoon

03. FLING POSSE

Literally like every little girls dream sleepover

Ramuda gets bored one day and gets the others to spend the night, to no protest of course cause how fun would an idea like that be

Ramuda whips out PILES of candy and snacks for everyone to dig in on throughout the night, more snacks than actual food is all I can imagine they'd eat

EVERYONE is given makeovers by Ramuda, it's almost like a whole fashion show, whether it's hairstyling, outfits, any of that. Ramuda is on it!!

Gentaro ends up telling scary stories at 1:30 in the morning which sends Ramuda and Dice into a frenzy and they almost ran outside in the cold and in their pajamas

Speaking of pajamas, Ramuda made custom made sanrio ones for everyone in preparation for an event like this, they're beyond fluffy and in tons of pretty colors just to the other members likings

Ramuda get's the most basic white girl idea and has Gentaro and Dice film tiktoks with him doing the most generic dances ever, cringe from the view of normal eyes, but funny as hell when seeing them film it

In response to the ghost stories Dice is first to fall asleep, he ended up hoping if he fell asleep the ghost wouldn't be able to get him since "If I can't see them, then they can't see me either!"

Ramuda and Gentaro made an art piece on the poor gamblers face

04. MATENROU

Doppo is quick to remind Hifumi to stash away all of their loose bottles of alcohol before Jakurai comes over to spend the night, both wouldn't want a near death experience during a harmless sleepover

Once Jakurai arrives, Hifumi is ecstatic to get to test out making some new meal plans for everyone to eat. It's almost like his ultimate test as the trained malewife he is, and he loves the chance to make a nice meal for everyone

It's normally quite hard to find a weekend where everyone isn't working to make plans like this, even during the week. So, during these kinds of nights the trio gets to take this time to just catch up with each other and talk about things

As quite the ongoing trend here, every division has one person that is the equivalent of that one mom at the mothers slumber party that happens once every century, Hifumi got them all matching pajamas

Jakurai always can find himself interested in the playful banter amongst Hifumi and Doppo, so there never really tends to be that dull of a moment amongst them all even if they're just talking

Hifumi ends up taking LOTS of selfies of everyone

Much to the others shock, Jakurai is actually quite the night owl and he is able to stay up impressively late with the others

Matenrou seems like that group of adults at parties that could be up until 4 in the morning just laughing obnoxiously loud at each others jokes until they suddenly realize time is a thing and they all finally decide to knock out for the night

05. DOTSUITARE HOMPO

Now, there is little variation of context as to how dh would get together for a sleepover. It's either they had spent the night at the bar and in Rosho's drunken state Sasara and Rei carry him back home and just decide to crash at his place, in that case not much happens for the night other than the vandalism of Rosho in his drunken sleep state. OR, on the other hand they all decide to just hang out at Rosho's place and stay the night which THEN leads to a night of drunken fun and banter.

The amount of teasing that would happen throughout the night, the perfect chill, laid back chaotic fun

Sometimes Sasara is able to convince Rosho to have little sketches with him in the house and put on little shows for Rei, it's quite interesting but it's hard to get Rosho to agree. Rei seems to really like them though

Don't know why, but it seems like they'd do funny dubbing over random low budget movies they can find

06. BADASS TEMPLE

Kuko and Jyushi already have their fair share of sleepovers in their own time, but at times if Hitoya isn't busy and he's forced coerced into coming, things tend to take quite the drastic turn

Jyushi has the matching onesies ready on deck for when any of his teammates tend to sleepover seeing as they always agree it'll happen at his house, Kuko likes them, Hitoya finds it quite hard to admit how much he likes them aswell

Jyushi's bed is COVERED in plushies

They'd jam out to Jyushi's cds and have screaming karaoke nights, once Hitoya joins in it's OVER. They all end up going off eventually having the most sore throats afterwards but damn is it fun as hell

It's all fun and games until Kuko and Jyushi suddenly turn to Hitoya revealing part of their motive for inviting him....

Hitoya orders them food

They all end up playing a bunch of switch games, some of which being.. Splatoon, the bane of everyones existence and cause for a new found rage in a casual round of rainmaker. Mario Party, a physical fight almost started. Mario Kart, Jyushi mains Lime Green Inkling girl, Kuko mains King Boo, and Hitoya mains Wario.

They all watch My Little Pony and enjoy it, don't ask me why I don't make the rules

Jyushi tries to convince Hitoya joining in as he whips out the nail polish and goes ham, usually Hitoya refuses but VERY rarely he'll agree and just take it off later

Jyushi makes little doodles of everyone in their onesies, Kuko joins in and draws all of them in their onesies on a monster truck. The truck is in a strange amount of detail

Very hectic but honestly fun night, I'd kill someone to have a sleepover with them

Red Lights

Guys, I have Thoughts about that mv. (hi, it's 5am and i'm writing a longform rant about kpop, this is fine) Because Red Lights is one of the more interesting projects Stray Kids have brought out, and one of the stand-out songs on their comeback album. The video, particularly, is a little jarring and it makes me wanna sift through things. Let's go.

To preface all of this, since I've seen some Takes by people with messed up parasocial relationships to a bunch of dudes in Korea: always remember that these men are Performers. I'll be looking at themes and influences from an artistry perspective, but at the end of the day these are two people who are Performing a piece, and it doesn't necessarily reflect who they Are. We don't know these people, we just see the image they project to us, and That Is Alright.

So. The song. 'Red Lights' sounds like a Bond Movie Theme and i mean that in a good way. It's very Theatrical and Orchestral and has a certain pressing urgency to it that fits nicely with the general theme of, for lack of a better word, Neediness. It starts with very stylized panting, and the whole breathing metaphor just goes on from there. Together with the translated lyrics, my mind went straight to The Police's 'Every Breath you Take', which is a song about a stalker, and which is very old. But I Digress. The theme and the style of the song is not what you'd call 'typical Stray Kids'. The bread and butter of their repertoire is their 'we're some kind of gang' concept songs featuring Everything And the Kitchen Sink over-the-top instrumentalisation, a dance break and at least two rhythm changes. Think 'God's Menu', 'Thunderous', 'All-In', 'Wolfgang', 'Domino'… all that stuff. We love them for it. As a kpop band they're actually pretty diverse in that they also do the happy pastel stuff (The View), the requisite Sad Songs (hello 'Ex', my old friend) and whatever the hell 'Cheese' is (I actually really love that song but also What). But the whole mature 'let's explore obsession' songs are Rare for these guys. The one that comes closest that I can think of is their cover of 2PM's 'Again and Again', which is Equally Haunting and probably already has an entire wiki subsection of analysis devoted to it (mostly for JYP reasons). Anyway. Lyrically, thematically, it stands out because it's an exploration of more adult themes that you don't usually see from a band with 'kids' in the name.

The video, then. It's a lot. If I'm honest, it's a little too 'on the nose' for me, image wise. Like, sure, let's do shibari and breath play and a bunch of chains, why not. And let's desaturate all the colours. But the thing about the mv that struck me most was the… intimacy? I guess? The amount of close-up shots, some of them Really Close to Hyunjin's Face, or taken as if sitting across the table from Chan at a Particularly Nerve-Wracking Dinner are really interesting?

More so, they're pretty unusual for the genre. Like the theme of 'having my heart broken is making me go Just A Little Crazy' is not new to kpop bands in general. A good third of Pentagon's discography falls into this category (is Hui ok? Can someone check on him occasionally?). But when you look at clips of 'Dr. Bebe' or 'Daisy' or, you know, BTOB's 'I'll be Your Man', they'll feature a lot of anguish and occasional bdsm-imagery, but they're usually filmed from a respectable distance so as to not mess up anyone's best selfie angle. There is a distance, meant to show the idol in the best, most flattering light. And maybe it's a directoral choice, or just a consequence of a culture that's much more invasive into private lives, but 'Red Lights' goes much further in portraying obsession and intimacy than most kpop mv's i've seen. Those scenes of Hyunjin just… smooshed up against the lens are jarring in the sense you would see them in a French art house movie, not in a pop music video. Chan rolling back his eyes while choked is Intense and not traditionally attractive, which, again, not something you see in a kpop generally. I think that's one of the reasons the video kinda sticks to your skin in a way that inspires 5am blog posts.

Does it mean anything? As a direction, image and artist wise, it's interesting. They set out to make a 'sexy concept' song and video and they definitely delivered on that. What's also deeply intriguing to me is that they are also the two members that would be best able explore this theme, apart from maybe Lee Know. Because while all band member are in their early twenties and would be about the right age to explore their sexuality, the image of most of them is more wholesome, at least to me. I don't see Changbin, Han or, god, IN, singing about bondage any time soon, for instance. That doesn't really compute in my head right now. But Chan and Hyunjin get away with it, because they've been aiming in that direction for longer than today. For Chan, we already know he's fairly confident being half naked on stage (as long as he doesn't have to watch himself after), and he's definitely in that part of his career where he's willing to experiment with songs like 'Drive', which are Totally Not About Sex, No Sir. It feels like a choice for him to push that boundary and to know how far he wants to push it. What certainly helps is that, in my opinion, he's one of the more social media savvy idols out there. He knows what he's doing and I'm fairly sure he's Aware of the thirst his fans have for his back and perhaps even, god help him, the amount of !yandere oriented fanfic out there. Meanwhile Hyunjin has, for the last year or so, had the look and some of the affinities of what to my western sensibilities feels like a Byronic hero (I don't know what his actual influences are, since i studied English Lit and my knowledge of Korean and Asian cultural influences is deeply flawed). Think of that sort of extremely pretty, charismatic, slighly androgynous style that definitely skirts the edges of the sane and healthy. The floofy shirt vampire with the bleedint heart, the bad boy with just enough sensuality to be truly interesting. He explored it in 'Playing with Fire' and now again in 'Red Lights'. And i hope he, too, knows what he's doing. If anything I suppose it puts Hyunjin on track to go Full Taemin in a couple of years. I think he'd do well at it. For now I'm mostly pleased that they are even able to do this. That they're allowed to colour outside of the 'basic kpop setup' line with the full support (i assume) of their management. Particularly for artists like Stray Kids, who do spend so much time on their own music and concepts, it's nice to know they're allowed to experiment. I patiently await the day Changbin goes full nu metal. Bring it.

2017 BJYX Timeline : At First Sight.

Everything starts with a blank canvass. Oh we painted each others lives inch by inch. from black, gray and blue to colors we never thought existed. Two photos from different places, longing to be one. 

Let’s start from the beginning of this whirlwind timeline. There will be very minimal interaction between our boys, but this will also be a good time to see how they were before working together. I wanted to paint a picture of  XNINE’s Xiao Zhan and Idol Wang Yibo. Before their names got tied to the Untamed and each other.

They were doing their own thing, working hard with their careers, no clue that one chance meeting will be so important. Warning, this post is video links, image and information heavy. I am missing some stuff because this hell site refuses to save things and continues to glitch.

03242017 : The story starts when XNINE was a guest in Day Day Up. When asked, they always say that this is the first time they met. However, they did not interact at all.

But there are definitely times on this episode where they pay attention to each other and it’s so cute. You can find different videos that will highlight these moments better than any screencaps can.

You tugged at your costume nervously. You’d been dancing for years, training in different styles, waiting for your big break and now it was finally here. You’d been chosen to dance in the music video for Gerard Way’s song Millions.

You were confused at first when you heard at the audition that the video would be for Gerard Way. You knew him as the singer of My Chemical Romance, and while you were aware they’d split up, you didn’t understand why he’d need dancers for a video, not yet having heard the song. When you arrived at your first arrival with the three other dancers and listened to the song, you were blown away at the different direction he was going musically.

Now it was the day of the shoot. You and the other dancers were scheduled to film you part in the afternoon after Gerard filmed his performance. The set was simple, a blue screen setup up behind an orange platform where you’d be doing the dance routine, but for now Gerard was there with a microphone filming his part as the song played through the studio.

Gerard was captivating when he performed, even when it was just him on stage. The director called cut, and as the music stopped Gerard took a step back and looked around. That’s when you locked eyes with him from across the room and a smile crept across his face.

“Ok, Gerard I think we got everything we need. We’re gonna take a 10 minute break, and then we’ll start filming the dancers,” the director called.

You started to feel even more nervous as the other dancers walked in and people started moving cameras around. This was really happening in less than 10 minutes no less!

“Umm hi,” a voice said, pulling you from your thoughts. “I’m Gerard.”

“Hi, I’m (YN),” you said with a timid voice.

“I like your costume, I really like how they came out.”

“Oh, did you help design them?” You were surprised how easily you were able to slide into conversation with him.

“Yea, I helped pick all the costumes and worked with the director on what the video would look like. I have a whole vision I wanted to achieve.”

“It’s very cool, very different from what I was originally expecting when I heard it was your video.”

He nodded. “The album is a different sound, but it’s what I’ve always really liked to listen to, similar to Bowie or brit pop,” he explained. “I’m glad I got to explore it.”

You continued chatting with him about musical influences and music videos and suddenly your nerves were gone as you were happily distracted by the singer. You found him easy to talk to with his soft nature and you couldn’t help but feel a connection with him. You were blissfully unaware of the time that passed until the director called for you to join the others on stage.

“Well time for me to do my part. It was really nice talking to you,” you smiled and waved before heading on stage. Gerard disappeared while you were filming the dance routine, but you were surprised to find he had come back and was watching after changing out of his suit and into jeans and a t-shirt. You smiled at him and he waved back.

“I think we’ll do it one more time through, and I think we’ll have everything we need,” the director called and you and the other dancers went back to your starting positions.

After the final run through of the routine, the director announced that it was a wrap on the video, dismissing you and the other dancers to head home. 

You went back to the dressing room and wiped off the stage makeup and changed back into the leggings and sweatshirt you had arrived in. 

“Thanks for everything, it was nice to meet you,” you smiled and waved at the wardrobe assistant as you headed out.

“(YN)! Hey, wait!” You heard Gerard calling. When you turned, he was hurrying down the hallway toward you.

“What’s up?” You asked with a smile.

“I was wondering if you’d like to go grab dinner? Or if you’re busy tonight, some other time, I mean, whenever,” he rambled nervously running his hand through his red hair.

“Sure!” You smiled. “Yea, I was just gonna go home and make some mac and cheese.”

Gerard laughed. “I know a diner with a great baked mac and cheese.”

“Then it’s a date,” you nodded.

Once you become an idol, your face will be everywhere. Hopefully, if you are lucky enough to attract attention to your name, but even if not, you can not really escape it. From concept teasers and promotional pictures to magazine spreads and endorsements, idols should know how to carry themselves in front of the cameras and pose nicely. Even as trainees, having good headshots is a way to sparkle the interest of agencies and brands for potential opportunities such as commercial films, acting roles and mv featurings.

This month, while they continue to practice hard to improve their performance skills with the help of their coaches, trainees will have special weekly modeling lessons with a professional photographer and a model to develop their skills, learn how to vary the poses and get them ready for any future photo session so they don’t look like robots with the same facial expressions in every picture. Instead of regular performances, at the end of August they will head out for a photoshoot to have a full modeling experience, including hair, make-up, styling and props. 

The companies will prepare five different indoor sets for the photo sessions and trainees may choose one of them for their photos, remembering that the styling and concept will be related to the location, which means they have to submit their choice (only ic) before the evaluation so everything is prepared for the day. Vans will be waiting for them in Seocho after lunch and take them to the said locations where the photos and preparation will take place. Once a trainee is done with their photos, they should wait until everyone finishes theirs so they can head back to Seocho complex together.

There isn’t a single soul in this whole ridiculous endeavor who doesn’t have a couple of treasonous friends, and if that’s the trade you’ve got to make for someplace passably furnished with fresh booze on tap, you’d still accept it gladly. And now you’re going to have to find a new one, because this one’s wallpapered with dude. The folks inside must have been expecting visitors; the doors are blown in. The ceiling’s swiss cheese—multiple teams. There’s a faint tang of exhaust in the air. Jump jets. Spud-boy stormtroopers, then. And then there’s the enormous snail shell propped up by the jukebox. It’s webbed with hairline cracks, mortared back together with you’re not sure what, here and there patched with smooth stones or metal scraps, all worn mostly even with its glossy surface. A pair of sturdy, corded leather straps hang from one side, riveted in place. That, you don’t have an explanation for. That or the rough-scaled, gray-green hand still clutching at the rim of its aperture. Something weaves in and out of the exposed flesh. A pale, wriggling shape. You fight down the bile, but then you realize it can’t be maggots; this thing is reconstructing the body. Muscle weaves around bone; bone steadily grows back into its original configurations, each tendon attachment timed to hold it all together as it goes. A hand becomes an arm. The process is exponential in speed; an arm becomes an upper body, heavily muscled, back bent and bristling with bare pinions and heavy scutes; legs and head and tail follow swiftly. It’s not Repton, not in the slightest. Reptons are still mostly lizard, just lizard in a chimpish sort of mode. This is human and lizard—seamlessly, impossibly interwoven. Shining yellow eyes fix on you before the lids have formed. The new hand reaches deep into the confines of the shell and draws a long, slim black blade with a broken crossguard. Grace of the worm—Vigier re-rolls 1 HD/exploration turn and recovers that much hp, even in death. No matter how far his atoms are scattered, he will eventually re-form unless constant effort is made to keep him disassembled. He re-forms without his armor.

Knight’s bond—Vigier always knows the relative distance and direction of every fragment of his shell-armor and his sword.

 There has been one full Monadic convergence event in recorded history.

It happened on the eve of an inadvertent crossing of paths between Repton and Freestar One convoys carrying substantial payloads of Post-Contact Artifacts. It was a fluke, a perfect storm; the resulting confrontation escalated into a live-fire exchange, both parties attempting to liberate or destroy the other’s cargo.

At the moment it is unclear which side decided to field exotic weapons. There’s a drafted reprimand sitting in a filing cabinet somewhere, waiting to be finished and submitted if further investigation reveals that any of our own agents were responsible and the spatial anomaly that swallowed both parties turns up again to spit them back out.

Satellite observation determined that all five fully documented Monadics, as well as four specimens that have yet to resurface, gathered at equidistant points approximately four miles out from what the eventual epicenter of the anomaly. Nobody noticed until it was too late to consider putting the guns away.

Whatever they were hoping for, it doesn’t seem to have played out the way they were hoping. The anomaly left a mile and a half of rocky badlands coated in a thin film of unidentifiable biomass and deposited two entities in the epicenter. One was, as far as reconstructions suggest, a shelled land mollusc the size of a draft horse. It died in the transfer from wherever it came from, leaving behind only a greasy smear and an empty, fractured shell. The other is Vigier.

Freestar One field operatives have exchanged fire with, contained, gotten piss drunk with, interrogated, been interrogated by, tutored, received martial arts instruction from, and generally cross-contaminated with Vigier on a nearly routine basis since his arrival. It is still largely unclear where he came from, what he is, or what language he’s speaking most of the time. Most attempts to extract information from him produce extreme violence or near-catatonic depressive episodes. At his most lucid, he’s expressed tremendous confusion at his own situation.

Compiled reports reveal several noteworthy observations:

—The shell belonged to his “steed,” and it is the one thing he seems to have a uniformly positive attachment to. He clings to it when sleeping and speaks to it like a traveling companion, calling it “Glotyeg.” Damaging or defacing the shell is the fastest way to send him into a berserk state.

—His short-term memory seems to be erratic and generally more limited than human-average.

—In addition to his physically impossible regenerative abilities, his immune system is vicious and radiation seems to slide off him entirely. He’ll wander through hot zones for months at a time completely unharmed.

—His fits of dermatillomania may be caused by a parasite that carries along with him when he regenerates; multiple testimonies make mention of a worm-like organism that surfaces from his more grievous wounds and seems to play an active role in his recovery process.

—When possible, he actively avoids being under open sky except on moonless or cloudy nights, and he is at his most erratic in unenclosed spaces. He repeatedly attests that the absence of walls or a ceiling is deeply unnatural.

Thus far no amount of study has revealed a replicable mechanism behind his immortality, and R&D is sick of managing the property damage he causes when he inevitably breaks out and makes a beeline for the nearest airlock so he can space himself back downwell. High Command suspects that he has no clear objective or strategic purpose; he is an inconvenience at worst and a curiosity or minor asset at best, and so procedure dictates that agents in the field do as they will around him so long as it does not disrupt their current assignment.

Periodically a Monadic will break from its prior trajectory and “stalk” Vigier; this usually ends in an ugly confrontation.
