march 21, 2023 - tuesday week 3
tuesday is my busiest day because all of my classes and all of my extracurriculars meet, but i think i've got everything taken care of so i can go to sleep right when i get back to the room!
i did some annotations on the research paper that i'm summarizing for research rotation, and we had a lecture on how to properly do a research proposal. it sounded really daunting but i'm kind of excited to work more on what i think i want to do for the independent research section of the class!
i also transferred my anatomy notes. we finished our first section (basics of animal form and function) yesterday and started our animal nutrition unit! it's a really interesting class, and iirc we're actually starting with wet labs tomorrow!

Chemistry is so fucking stupid like why do you make me learn 18373839922 rules then when I go to a solve a question you pull the "erm actually this is an exception 🤓👆" WHAT'S THE POINT OF MAKING THESE RULES IF YOU'RE GONNA INTRODUCE 183839392938382838 EXCEPTIONS HUH
Also i just NEED to know what they were smoking/snorting while naming these compounds because holy shit.

“Incredible change happens in your life when you decide to take control of what you do have power over instead of craving control over what you don’t.” – Steve Maraboli
22/05/2022, Sunday.
I finished my exams 🎉
On the 12/05/2022 I took my last exam ever, it was Advanced Organic Chemistry. I still have to realise that I am free from studying!
Now I'll start the master's thesis. On Tuesday I should start the training in the lab, I hope to be independent fast. The sooner I do my analysis the sooner I can graduate and, who knows, maybe apply for a PhD! 👩🏻‍🎓
Last week I went to a Polymers Conference, 5 days long. It has been inspiring, I've met young researchers/PhDs and talked about how it works where they are from. Honestly, I have a positive energy since I got back! I just want to do things and work in the lab 💪🏻

In 1942, a team led by chemist Louis Fieser originally developed napalm for the US Chemical Warfare Service in a secret laboratory at Harvard University. The name “Napalm” is a portmanteau of two of the constituents of the original thickening and gelling agents: naphthenic acid and palmitic acid. The addition of these two helps gelatinize combustible materials like gasoline, which then sticks to surfaces and burns, causing more damage. Napalm was widely applied by the US during the Korean War for close air support.  It also became an intrinsic element of US military action during the Vietnam War. Reportedly about 352,000 tonnes of napalm bombs were dropped in the region within 10 years. The image shows a girl named Phan Thị Kim Phúc at nine years of age running naked on a road after being severely burned on her back by a South Vietnamese napalm attack.

naphthenic acid
Naphthenic acids (NAs) are a mixture of several cyclopentyl and cyclohexyl carboxylic acids. NAs is mainly used in the soap, textile and leather industries. It can also be used in the manufacture of disinfectants and insecticides, or in the manufacture of dry agents and brighteners for the paint and coating industry. NAs soap is also a good emulsifier and it is widely used to prepare lubricating coolant for metal working.
palmitic acid
Palmitic acid, or hexadecanoic acid in IUPAC nomenclature, is the most common saturated fatty acid found in animals, plants, and microorganisms. As its name indicates, it is a major component of the oil from the fruit of oil palms.

hi day 2
I’m sitting by the isostatic press for the third day straight and I need some stimulation. I also desperately need to work on my internship report, so I’m typing this in an attempt to get my brain into typing mode.
I bought a very pretty dress yesterday - I think it makes me look like a fairy or like I have come from Narnia. The floral print, the colours and the cut gives it some major Winx Club vibes. Like, paired with my dirty green hightops it’s serving garden fairy. But I also saw another very similar dress, just in black and white, and I’m gonna try and buy it today. Also some socks maybe and a miniskirt, I really want another miniskirt.
I’m tired. And I’m dizzy. Need a nap.

Bad adhd day during a chemistry lab
So I'm studying chemistry in my local university and today I had a lab.
I'm medicated for my adhd and I usually struggle a bit more in labs compared to lectures because we are doing stuff with our hands.
But today I had an absolutely horrible adhd day. My brain just refused to work.
So the lab was already chaotic because the solutions were prepared wrong and it took us half an hour to figure out which solution is causing the whole lab to go wrong.
[Us as in 6 lab techs from other labs while the students were just asked to measure and mix stuff.]
We ended up redoing the lab for the 5th time for us to get the desired color. And then as I walked to the instrument that does the measurement of the absorbance, I ended up dropping our blank sample and contaminating two other samples. [It's a mix of me not having control with my hands and my brain being bad]
But we did the measurements anyhow because we were already running late because my lab partners took forever to measure the samples out.
And my brain couldn't comprehend what they meant with the unknown solution compared to the standard solution because my lab partners just continued to repeat the name of the chemical [just the concentration is different] and I had to ask the lab instructor and I apologized for asking a stupid question because it made no sense to me and she told me that my question made sense.

went on a grocery trip and proctored an exam for the pledges of my fraternity today! also got some stuff done for the pharmacology assignment due tomorrow, and finished a couple of physical chemistry assignments.
trying to take advantage of my free time to get back into reading - have been chugging through the audiobook of i'm glad my mom died by jennette mccurdy (which i highly recommend) and trying to finish up my read of the crow by alison croggon (which i started in august).

Well fuck me, I may have gotten a drop of chemical in my eye AGAIN. I WEAR GLASSES SO HOW THE FUCK. But it may be also power of autosugestion, a drop of something landed near my eyelid so I delicately wiped it buuut my eye started to itch slightly. The funniest thing is that I KNOW it was water, because I was cleaning something and I washed it off once so anything that was there should be very diluted or nonexistent, and I did check with fenoloftalain (how do you write it in English?) and it was blank, so nothing acidic or basic so I should be in the clear. Anyway I washed my eye and it itches even more, but now from water irritation so. Annoying but what can I do to not stress xd
Ehhh anyway I'm going home to wash my eye some more

“Doubt is not a pleasant mental state, but certainty is a ridiculous one.” ― Francois-Marie Arouet de Voltaire
19/01/2023, Thursday.
I am a PhD student! It sounds incredible! 👩🏻‍🔬
Last spring I completed my exams and went on 5-days congress before starting the traineeship. In that moment my life started to change!
I realised I was miserable, passively transported by the events, sort of asleep, so focused on passing exams that I never asked myself what made me happy... After the polymer congress I began to question who I was and who I wanted to become. I was awake and my life was just to tight.
The period from end-May to end-September (the time it took me to complete the thesis and graduate) was a complete roller coaster!
The thesis absorbed 90% of my time, certain days I worked up to 12 hours! It needed to be that way due to PhD application deadline. In the spare time I struggled to be a functioning human. Going to the gym was hard, no time for hobbies at all, and I couldn't bear the weight of housework... My 4 years's relationship ended in August.
On the 21st September I graduated 🎉 from there everything went in the right direction! I could rest till the beginning of the PhD (in November), I reached out for old friends, and I fell in love with an amazing person.
Currently I am content! I still struggle with work-life balance, there are a few aspects of my life I want to improve and work on. I need to focus more on maintaining friendships and I would like to learn to do more recreative activities on my own (and not just wait for someone to accompany me) 💪🏻
