I love chenqing. fuckass evil flute that everyone hates. somehow considered more dangerous than the literal magic swords everyone else has. supposedly made of bamboo but wei wuxian was out there whacking people with it on the battlefield. it's a vessel to channel dark and fucked up magic, but it was also a toddler's favorite teething toy. it's great.

Some misconceptions on WWXs flute...

Chenqing was just a normal dizi. Yes, it had a reputation, but at the end of the day it was simply a flute with a tragic backstory. It was not made of bamboo as others have claimed in recent posts. That's his second flute he made after coming back to life. Chenqing is described as being made of dark wood - alluding to it being made from a tree in the burial mounds - which are black.

It's not a vessel to channel anything, it's a tool WWX uses to calm his mind and therefore the ghosts he is controlling, that's all. WWX uses empathy to harness his cultivation method, he and others can do this without Chenqing or any instrument at all.

But yes, it is funny that this simple, ordinary dizi is thought to possess some unspeakable magic powers and has an infamous reputation for unjustly killing thousands. When in fact, it was an ordinary instrument that aided WWX in helping the dead use up their resentment and move on while fighting in a war, saving innocent people post-war and defending himself against attacks.

All the while, being a toddler's teething toy and a fidget spinner for WWX as well.

Lan Jingyi

I think if any of the Juniors was going to try demonic cultivation it would be Lan Jingyi.

I can just imagine him out of curiosity, trying to get Chenqing. Then he gets his hands on the flute and experimentally blows it.

He hears a terrible wailing noise from a nearby bush.

Jingyi puts Chengqin back super fast and runs for his life. Wei Ying falls out of a bush laughing.

Wei Ying and Lan Zhan gather the juniors and set-up Jingyi. Claiming a nefarious creature has been summoned. They’ve worked out it was done with Chengqin in an attempt to frame Wei Ying.

Now they intend to use a spell that will create an image of who played Chengqin. (Wei Ying it’s Bull Sh*t he has no such spell.)

It has the desired effect of making Jingyi sweat and confess to his crime.

At this point the tell him there was no creature this time, but dabbling in things they don’t understand, could have serious consequences.

Lan Zhan punishes Jingyi as an example and he never tries to touch Chengqin again.

Wei Wuxian wore black and red as a Jiang disciple

Rating: FANON – NEUTRAL

Almost all the visual adaptations and official art for Mo Dao Zu Shi depict Wei Wuxian in black and red clothing during his days as a Jiang disciple, despite the other disciples wearing sect colors. However, this design choice is not canon to the novel, as the color of his robes during this time period is never stated.

In all the flashbacks to Wei Wuxian as a Jiang disciple, the only time the color of Wei Wuxian's clothing is mentioned is in the Xuanwu's cave:

The inner robe was his undergarment, which wouldn't normally have been appropriate for Lan Wangji to wear, but his outer robe was filthy. ... Wei Wuxian tossed the dry white inner robe to him and draped the outer robe around himself before silently making himself scarce to give Lan Wangji space. (Seven Seas Ch. 11, p. 64)

Wei Wuxian has canonically worn a white inner robe at least once. However, the color of his outer robes are never stated until after Lotus Pier is sacked and Wei Wuxian returns from the Burial Mounds for the first time, at which point he is "dressed entirely in black" (Seven Seas Ch. 13, p. 179).

Personally, the emphasis placed on how much black Wei Wuxian wears after the Burial Mounds implies to me that it is a brand-new fashion choice. In my opinion, as the head disciple of the Jiangs, Wei Wuxian was much more likely to have worn the sect's official color:

Jiang Cheng had yet to reply when a man clad in the Jiang Clan's purple came rushing out of the woods. "Sect Leader!" (Seven Seas Ch. 3, p. 80)

Notably, even in the scenes before his official separation from the Jiangs where he does wear black, Wei Wuxian does not appear to wear red either, except for one "accessory":

He saw himself, dressed all in black, standing with his hands clasped behind his back. A black flute with a bright red tassel hung at his waist. (Seven Seas Ch. 10, p. 310)

This prompts the question of why exactly the visual adaptations and fanart depict Wei Wuxian in so much red. My guess is that the red from Chenqing's tassel was used as an accent color in order to make Wei Wuxian's design distinctive, but I don't know for sure.

In conclusion, it is impossible to say what color Wei Wuxian's clothing was when he was a Jiang disciple, as it is never mentioned in the novel. The color of his clothing is left to the audience's own interpretation.

a yuan keeping a ribbon or whatever from wwx is kinda a trope in the Fandom, but not commonly tagged. I think there's one fic where that happens where wwx hides him and a yuan snatches it as wwx is leaving and wwx let's him keep it, later jc (who only joined the seige as an excuse to try to get close to his brother to save him) smuggles out wwx but doesn't know about ayuan. By the time jc gets back yuan has been found by lz. Jc hides wwx at lp and wwx is jl nanny and xy wants wwx to adopthim

No, I don't believe Wei Wuxian ever had an issue with talent or power being a factor for respecting anyone. I say they did not respect one another due to their core ideals and morality being so different. Wei Wuxian emphasizes kindness and happiness being something to strive towards to feel content with life and with yourself. You cannot be content in your choices and your own life without simple kindness from others or showing that to others. To not envy others or deny the kindnesses you are granted. Or, to deny another that simply based on who or what they are. To accept what you are given and try to equally grant such kindness's back because of respect.

Wei Wuxian’s own pride when he was seventeen or eighteen had been, in fact, on par with Jiang Cheng’s. He had also been someone with strong spiritual power and exceptional talent. Even when he’d fooled around all day catching fish and shooting birds, and climbing walls and playing pranks at night, he had still been leagues ahead of his fellow disciples who actually studied hard.

But whenever he found himself tossing and turning in the dead of night, unable to sleep and plagued by thoughts of how he’d never again follow the orthodox path to the mountain’s peak, never again display the astounding swordplay that made people’s jaws drop…he would turn his thoughts around with a simple fact. If it had not been for Jiang Fengmian bringing him to Lotus Pier, Wei Wuxian might never have crossed paths with the cultivation world. He would never have been conscious of such a mystical and magnificent realm. He’d merely have been the leader of some homeless street urchins who roamed the streets and fled at the sight of dogs—or perhaps herded cattle and stole vegetables in the countryside, playing his flute and living one day at a time. He’d have had no way of cultivating, let alone a chance to form a golden core.

And at that thought, he’d feel a lot better.

It is Jiang Cheng who does see power and talent as the only way to be happy. To be competitive, to win to be the best, to always be right. He does not exhibit kindness but wants to be given what kindness entails from others and without reciprocity. He views relationships transactionally, to help only if it is based within a debt he deems important enough to honor.

After a moment of silence, Wei Wuxian grumbled, “I’m not asking you to thank me.”

Jiang Cheng snorted a laugh. “Right. Asking nothing in return for doing a good deed—you’re in a league of your own. Unlike me, of course. No wonder my father always used to say you were the one who really understood the Jiang Clan’s motto, when he was alive. That you were the one who acted as a Jiang should.”

Wei Wuxian interrupted him, unable to listen any longer. “That’s enough.”

“What’s enough?” Jiang Cheng snapped. “It’s enough just because you say so? Yeah, you know best! You’re better than me in every way, whether it be talent or cultivation, intelligence or temperament! You people know it all. I can’t compare. What does that make me, then?!”

Essentially, Wei Wuxian does not allow the tragedy that has befallen him to be what defines him, or allows it to be what he is. It is Kindness that makes life worth it. Jiang Cheng does not understand extending such kindnesses as it is a burden to help and genuinely care for others without vitriol. It is not worth it for him to sacrifice literally or figuratively for someone that is loved by him. All give and no take is what he views the world as and if he gives, it is to be repaid in ten fold. No one can be his equal as no one is worth that aside from his own self.

Jiang Cheng does not even begin to understand his own sect motto until the revelation of the core and how he met kindness (in many ways) with nothing but vitriol and cruelty because he has been to caught up in his own selfishness and viewing kindness as something to earn and take away at will without repercussions to his own life.
