Sorry for show mention, but Ned giving Sansa a doll I would have reacted hell of a lot worse. I would have ripped the dolls head off in front of him. Or I would have said "well she's not Lady but she'll do. Here maybe this work." Before stabbing the doll with a knife and going "oh good now she's just like Lady. She's DEAD." Hell my response is appropriate. Sorry Ned but you don't get to make yourself feel better about Lady by giving Sansa a toy she hasn't played with in 5 years.
Yeah, I know. It did not make it any better that the show aged Sansa up too. I mean, who gives a 13 year old a doll that they didn’t even ask for?
I don’t know what intention the show had with that scene. They might actually have been trying to show how out of touch Ned was when it came to parenting Sansa or understanding her emotions. But they somehow managed to play it as Sansa being bratty to her dear old father, who is really just trying his best. At least I get the impression that this is how 9/10 of viewers interpreted that scene.
I don’t think it helped that the show for reasons that escape me chose to add Sansa having a snooty attitude to her Septa, while the Septa in turn was changed from this stern, intimidating woman to a kindly-old-grandma-type. I think this made the audience more prone to interpret Sansa’s reactions as her simply having a bad attitude.
And it certainly didn’t help that the show never had Sansa talk about Lady after she was killed. From the books we know that she cried herself to sleep for weeks afterwards. We know that she thinks about Lady often, and dreams about her at night. And we know that she’s misdirected the blame for what happened towards Arya, which is why their relationship deteriorates. The show somehow failed to get any of this across, and the image left is just Sansa being a brat and mean to Arya for no reason.
Actually, I think what you wrote would have been a vast improvement to the doll scene!

lol OMG, Sansa stans are out of their damn minds. I know that shouldn’t be a shock at this point. But OMG they only get worse and worse. Like this bold faced lie from @sayruq:
Tumblr media
My AO3 account is linked on my blog and while they act as though my either lack of Sansa or just having Sansa as a character who exists without being the center of the fic is hate, I’ve not put any of my fics under her tag and certainly not under Jonsa. The most amusing thing about this is that I am a notoriously slow writer. If I were to put my limited time into writing a hate fic, it wouldn’t be published until at least a month or two from now. But I wouldn’t waste what little time I have on something I don’t have interest in.
If you have to make up lies about people who disagree with you, that means you have nothing legitimate against them.
But the thing to really highlight with this situation is that the same people who call for peace and love in the fandom are participating in spreading overt lies. Like @rorylgilmore. On one hand, they reblog this post:
Tumblr media
and then positively participate in sayruq’s lie:
Tumblr media
That’s kindness as far as Sansa stans are concerned.
Oh and you want to know what evidence there is that I’ve written this fic? @cheriesteph believes I must have done it because I don’t include Sansa in younger more beautiful queen edits:
Tumblr media
Yup. Sansa stan logic dictates that if you don’t include Sansa in things that have nothing to do with her is evidence of writing hate fic.
And before anyone tries to claim “not all Sansa stans!” don’t. Not unless you’re actively shutting down people like this and trying to clean up your fandom.

here's what caused arya trauma: the death of her family. Harrenhall. Being forced to kill for survival. Seeing things no little girl should have to see. what didn't cause her trauma: Jeyne Poole calling her horse face. whom by Arya own admission in AGOT, doesn't do it anymore. I'm not saying it wasn't shitty, but Arya stans need to stop acting that Jeyne was some psychological tormentor rather than just an insecure girl who can only dream of the privileged station that arya takes for granted.

1) something I've noticed long ago is that this fandom literally needs things spelt out to them when it comes to Sansa, rather than reading between the lines. Like the idea she doesn't blame herself for Ned's death (when she shouldn't anyway, I don't give a crap if George said she has some "responsibility" this is the same man who doesn't seem to realize a lot of the shit he writes is rape. he is not infallible) when I always thought otherwise, given the fact she has nightmares of Ilyn Payne,
2) was suicidal after Ned's death, thought herself wrong for trusting Cersei. I've heard people say b4 that her admitting it was wrong to trust Cersei isn't really accepting responsibility when thats what it literally is??? it's even more fucked up when you consider that Sansa's trust was taken advantage of. I'm sorry but its fucked that the fandom blames her for that. Sorry for the rant lol, it was someone's bad take in the tag that annoyed me.
This fandom is more likely to notice the nuance in the non-POV characters than Sansa, and to a certain extent, I do get why they do that. The archetype that she represents is not someone who had a lot of voice in the medieval fantasy genre.  All of Sansa’s actions make sense when you look at it from the Medieval noblewoman and a woman’s duty perspective. Will, the average medieval fantasy reader catch this though? The answer is no. So when they read her there will always be a certain sense of unknown. This is ironic because these are often the same people who give Sansa hell for seeing tropes rather than people in AGOT.
However, at the same time, it’s no excuse. They always praise GRRM for being so unconventional and unpredictable. You would think they will appreciate a character like Sansa who defies so many tropes and stereotypes. In AGOT I would have understood why they couldn’t see it, but in ACOK, ASOS, and AFFC? No. Their takes on Sansa are rather atrocious and they never catch on things that are rather obvious with Sansa. Like you said the nightmares Sansa has about Ilyn Payne, but also the fact that Sansa mistrusts everyone from AGOT and on. Or how she tries to find someone who fits the brave, gentle, and strong criteria is another one. A sophisticated reader would understand that a character doesn’t need to explicitly say out loud that they are making amends. Their actions will show it. The fact that this flies over their heads shows that the problem lies with them not Sansa.

cheriesteph replied to your post “Not in the Vale. The little lord’s kept us out of it, same as his...”
It goes back to that quote about how the smallfolk just want to be left alone.
rhaenys-martell-targaryen replied to your post “Not in the Vale. The little lord’s kept us out of it, same as his...”
People give Doran and Lysa so much shit for staying neutral, but honestly they were literally the ONLY lords paramount to put their people's needs first
YUP.

I don't know if your familar with the original outline (i'd be surprised if you weren't, antis LOVE using it to dismiss sansa) but the OG Sansa has always pissed me off. Not the character herself (since its just old draft not an actual book) but the fact that George tried framing the decision she made as causing "conflict" - because she chose her husband and CHILD over her fam? WTF? I'm sorry but that messed up. And ofc the majority of this fandom doesn't have the sense to see that
I mean, putting aside the fact that GRRM outright states that his stories evolve all the time and this premise is based on an outline that was written before many ASOIAF fans were even born, and putting aside the fact that THIS LITERALLY DID NOT HAPPEN, can you fucking imagine how people would look at a character like Catelyn if she chose Edmure or Lysa over her own children?

When Aziza first spotted Mariam in the morning, her eyes always sprang open, and she began mewling and squirming in her mother’s grip. She thrust her arms toward Mariam, demanding to be held, her tiny hands opening and closing urgently, on her face a look of both adoration and quivering anxiety.
“What a scene you are making,” Laila would say, releasing her to crawl toward Mariam. (-)
As soon as she was in Mariam’s arms, Aziza’s thumb shot in her mouth and she buried her face in Mariam’s neck.
Mariam bounced her stiffly, a half-bewildered, half-grateful smile on her lips. Mariam had never before been wanted like this. Love had never been declared to her so guilelessly, so unreservedly.
Thanks to @cheriesteph blog which reminded me of this lovely book I have in my shelf.

All I can say about your post is how it’s supposedly “Sansa’s fault” for the deaths of Mycah and Lady are absolutely ridiculous. And you should definitely read the responses left to you by Cheriesteph and Nyamhyjay.
Hello,
Of course I respect all of your opinions, but I have always found it pointless to interpret the subject of Lady and Mycah at such opposite ends.
Arya and Joffrey told two opposite stories, in one, Arya and the boy attacked Joffrey for no reason, and Nymeria bit the boy. In the other story, Joffrey attacked the others and they defended themselves. No doubt Cersei and Robert knew that their own children were lying. The problem is that "to know" is one thing, "to prove" is another thing. If there is no evidence, you cannot do anything. Joffrey is a prince and circumstances are on his side ...
Even if we do a very simple math, some facts emerge. What would happen if Sansa confirmed Arya's story instead of lying?
- Everyone made sure that Joffrey attacked a boy for no reason and tried to cut him psychopathically.
- Everyone would be sure that Joffrey pulled a sword on Arya and chased her and wanted to hurt her. Joffrey is a prince, but Arya is also the daughter of the warden of north , not an ordinary peasant.
- Everyone would be sure that Arya attacked Joffrey to protect Mycah and that Nymeria bit Joffrey to protect Arya.
Because Arya told it that way. And most importantly, that's what really happened. The people you mentioned wrote as if Arya would lose her hand ... The so-called Sansa's lie saved Arya. Arya has already said everything, and Joffrey said, "Arya attacked me." If the two sides have a common story, it is the fact that Arya attacked Joffrey, but the problem is the "reason" ... Joffrey knew that if he confirmed Arya's story, he would be guilty, so "they attacked me for no reason" he said ... Sansa 's lie did not save Arya, it took her righteousness away, and I think it made her more risky. If Arya had been a lower level rather than Ned's daughter, she would have been killed for Sansa's lie. You saw how persistent Cersei was about Arya punished despite Ned, could Cersei have asked her to be punished if Sansa had said otherwise? No, because the culprit is her son.
What would happen when Joffrey was lying and turned out to be the true criminal? Mycah would have died anyway, but everyone would know that he was wrongly killed and that Joffrey was the culprit, he would have a bad image all over the realm. The most important thing for Sansa is the Lady ... Lady would never die, why? Because Joffrey was guilty, Cersei could never demand the head of a wolf for this, the animal did what it was supposed to do and attacked the person who attacked its owner.
Is it hard to do this simple math?
By the way, I didn't say that Sansa had a direct share in Mycah's death, I just said she played a minor role. Mycah was already going to die, and the Lannister men were already chasing him. Sansa's fault with regard to Mycah was to lie and let that boy die like a criminal and traitor. She did not do justice to his soul, she followed the corrupt order of high society and helped spin the wheel.
Thank you.

One of the funniest things imo when I see people paint Sansa as this Regina George /queen bee figure etc is that they ignore how everything goes against this idea that Arya was a social outcast.... she was close with her brothers, has memories of playing with the other children. It's pointed out by Sansa herself that A gets on well with people. Like Arya stans have this weird thing where Arya was simultanteously social butterfly and outcast... sorry for the rant, but I wish they be consistent
Yes, it’s one of those cases where it seems like people just can’t decide.
I mean, I get it. Arya had a Septa who was indisputably awful to her. She has a lack of confidence about some aspects of herself that comes from being constantly compared with her perfect sister (by adults, mind you, not by said sister), and people were trying to force her into a role that was never going to suit her.
But she also had her brothers - Jon in particular - other children to play with, her father’s men that she loved hanging around (is it just me or doesn’t the “Arya Underfoot” name seem affectionate?), and overbearance from her father. She wasn’t some poor neglected child that lurked about in the shadows. She was a privileged highborn girl in her own way. What do they think? That the “Arya would make frinds with anybody” was something that just came out of the blue after they left the prison that was Winterfell?
And speaking of childhood difficulties... Sidenote, I know, but - as someone who was the obedient child, always striving to be perfect and do what was expected - it always bothers me when people think that Sansa must have had it easy because she was beautiful, able to live up to expectations, and always eager to please. That just gives you an entirely different set of issues to deal with. Sansa might not have realised, but you aren’t a little lady, eager to please, at the age of 3 without eventually having to face the usual problems of the people pleaser. We do see it with Sansa; she has difficulties saying no to things that make her uncomfortable, and she doesn’t have much confidence in her own opinions or indeed much sense of her own worth outside of her beauty and status. This is easy to overlook because it isn’t something that she is actively thinking about, but it’s absolutely there. I’ll jump off that tangent now.

if grrm had taste he would have given Jeyne a POV chapter (a single one, similar to melisandre) in Dance - one that takes place AFTER they escape. it would do a great deal in humanizing Jeyne I think - making readers see her more than that girl who called Arya a mean name, and Sansa's best friend. but someone who survived unspeakable horror but still had hope of something better - "You saved me". it would also be interesting to get Jeyne's perspective on Sansa.
I agree with you so much. A Jeyne POV chapter would be really really amazing. ASOIAF is supposed to critique feudalism and classism and yet somehow there are no POV characters who are commoners. Sure there’s Davos but he doesn’t really represent the smallfolk who get hurt when the Lords play their Game of Thrones. Jeyne, on the other hand, is the perfect person for that. Her presence would not only humanize herself but also one of the biggest morals of ASOIAF.

so one of my headcanons for when Arianne survives the books (I refuse to accept any other ending for her other than POD) is that she has twin sons and names them doran and quentyn- because despite everything, all the years of misunderstandings and hurts Arianne loves her family and she would want honor them this way.
...here’s a question, how dare you? 😭
