Tokyo Day 2
I sweat, I did not forget about this blog. I have another solely for family and filling in that took a lot of time, apart from studying and doing everything else lol.
Anyway, let’s resume with my first travel before I arrived at school!
On my second day in Tokyo I didn’t meet any friend but ventured by myself. In the morning, after breakfast, I headed to Rikugien, a garden in northern Tokyo.
It was a nice day, sunshine and a few clouds. The garden itself was lovely, the cherry clossoms were still visible and the hidden paths were nice to explore.
After that I headed to Akihabara, to re-visit Kanda Myoujin, a shrine. Like the last time I’ve been there, the weather was crisp and clear, the cherry trees were blooming and the red of the shrine was marvellous. I think the shrine got even more popular, because there were lots of tourists. A lot more than expected. (Although, I did come from a garden that is not right in the very centre, so I guess that’s why? *shrugs*)
Once done, I felt my knee getting even worse. (Remember? Me climbing a mountain? Yeah... not good.) I took escalators and elevators whenever I could. Walking down stairs in the subway was already impossible.
I somehow managed to find my way to Asakusa, were I wanted to visit the smaller Asakusa Shrine! In Sensoji, there were... many people. Like, MANY people. It was hot and sticky and just annoying. I couldn’t walk well too, so after a while I walked along the side-paths, but there were also people. I somehow got to Asakusa Shrine in the end. Do not recommend, really.
Once I paid my visit to the gods and got a new Omamori, I walked towards the river and through the Sumida ward. It suddenly got very quiet once I left the premises of Sensoji, finally.
The river side was lovely, many cherry trees lined up along the water and many took the chance to sit there and have lunch. Me too, btw.
I watched the Sky Tree from the distance while eating (and evading the seats were all those seagulls and pigeons were lurking).
After lunch, I walked to the Sky Tree. My main aim was to go to the Jump Shop (for haikyuu!! merch), but ended up exploring some other shops. I also didn’t end up getting anything haikyuu related, but bought a sticker sheet from a science shop!
On my way back to the hotel, I stopped at Ginza, visited Itoya, a store with more than 8 stories specialised on stationary (I really recommend that! It has a lot, like: a LOT, and very lovely things), and went to the Kabuki theater while I was already in GInza.
Then I had some time left and thought to go to Ueno and the Tokugawa Shrine. Yet, once I went out and walked towards the Ueno Park, it became clear that I wouldn’t get far. My knee was about to collapse.
I walked back to the station and took a break in a konbini, where I found some stickers from the suica penguin!
Finally in the hotel, I rested my knee.

Microhistory
My Micro-history is based on the place, Puhoi, This is a small town in Northern Auckland where I spent most of my life. This place holds a lot of fond memories and emotions for me. I Have tied my little farm in Puhoi to the township with the connection of the river which runs through them both. When I was growing up i thought of this farm as an adventurous fantasy wonderland, and the town was always a quaint town that gave a strong sense of culture and community, this is what i have tried to portray through this series of images. I think this series of images represents small hidden wonders and beautiful things. Throughout the image taking process of the past few weeks I experimented with a couple different cameras, including my phone (used for walk in the neighbourhood exercise), a sony a100 which was about 15 years old (used for the township photos: cherry clossoms - church) and a Canon EOS 800D which is about 3 years old (farm photos).
In the first couple images I played around with focus and shutter speed mostly, trying to capture to flow of the water and then others where the focus was on the branches in the foreground. I liked how the water was reflecting the light from above. The picture of the Fence Posts was taken at golden hour and was warm toned, this post was significant to me as we did a lot of target shooting practice living on the farm, I shot my first can off of this post. The image of the greenhouse i have used to reflect the image coming later on of the church, trying to replicate the same structure of the building. My farm cat helped to tie in the idea of exploring and adventure, i think with the nature background and her green eyes it ties in well with these first couple images. The picture of the garage was also taken at golden hour, this has a now dead passion fruit vine off of it, we used to pick them with my mum and put them at the end of the driveway in a basket for anyone driving by to come and take when we’d grow too many, same with the vegetables from the now deserted green house.
The cherry blossom and river images are to tie the place of the township together with my farm, with this first photo i was focusing on the blossoms hanging down with the river in the background, whilst taking this photo i found part of a broken beehive. I wanted to include this photo because i loved the textures that it brought and how the light would shine through the thinner parts of the structure. The Puhoi Town library is one of the smallest in New Zealand and survived two great floods, it was commonly seen with its little chimney pumping firewood in winter with a lovely lady always around, people form the community would donate books to the library after the floods because of the damage. I thought this church was a good representation of the quaint community that we have in Puhoi. The general store image was one of the only 5 buildings in the town, our family would come here for fish and chips as kids and the adults would sneak off to the pub next door which was always filled with people and their Harleys as it was a common stop for motorcyclists travelling up north.  The Trading post shows a lot of the culture we have around the area, i was trying to capture the flag to the left blowing gently in the wind. The Church Images I was working a lot with light, it became quite bright as i took these so the clouds kept moving and the lighting kept changing, i was taking photos of the white parts of the building to begin with to test the white balance and lighting before taking this picture. This church has a strong sense of community and also reminds me of one of my favourite childhood movies “Bridge to Terabithia” which was filmed at This church and the surrounding forrest. The stained glass photo, i wasn't intentionally trying to black out the area around it, it was a test shot that turned into a happy accident photo which i really liked because it brought in the sunlight from outside and made the colours of the stained glass window very vibrant.
Over all my biggest hurdles was understanding what settings were best for the type of image I was trying to take and battling the constantly changing weather that kept moving from sunny to cloudy to rain and back to sunny again all within minutes of each other which impacted the outcome of many of my images due to the constant changes in lighting. My work was mostly inspired by Frans Lanting who created very bright and colourful nature images.

"My! My! What beautiful blossoms we have this year. But look, this one's late. But I'll bet, when it blooms, it will be the most beautiful of all." -Fa Zhou to Fa Mulan _______________________________________ There's a variety of cherry clossoms that grow in most asian countries. There's white, pink, 5-petaled 20-petaled, among others... depends on what's endemic in the area. (That's why in my recent portrait the cherry blossoms were pink while this one's white... also, it was taken in seoul while this shot is in the southern part of korea) At that time, there weren't a lot of cherry blossoms in bloom in the Southern area as it was already approaching summer. However my sister told me that if I travel north, it will gradually get even cooler so there are still some cherry blossoms in bloom until they too eould gradually cease to do so come summer and the rise of temperature. This info might help if you really are keen on experiencing the CB... Also, best to attend the Sakura Festival sometime mid March. 😊) . . Cherry blossoms at night!
Here, we are goingo to talk about the video of “Cherry clossoms at night” of the youtuber Japanagos, which is really interesting and surpising.
In this video the girl is talking about a very famous festival in Japan called “Meguro River Sakura Festival”, a lot of people go to see the cherry blossoms at nigth. The cherry blossoms are gigant trees with a lot of pink flowers, you can see them everywhere   Also, there you can find some snacks made of rice and petals of the cherry blossoms; there are two types of snack: the Kansai style and the Kanto style, the difference between this is that Kanto style is more soft and you can not see the rice.
In my opinion, I think that this kind of festivals are really amazing and special because it encourages you to come out and apreciate the beautiful nature, for me it´s really interesting this kind of festivals.
