The title of Tamsyn Muir's short story The Magician's Apprentice may be a nod to Vladimir Nabokov's novella The Enchanter. Nabokov called The Enchanter his "pre-Lolita" and in a way The Magician's Apprentice is Muir's pre-TLT. What I find interesting is that unlike in Lolita, in The Enchanter the predator is killed off before he can commit the crime. It makes me wonder if the open ending in The Magician's Apprentice doesn't suggest a similar thing happening: Cherry consuming John before he can consume her.

Regardless if Cherry killed John or not the ending still would not be a happy one. Had Cherry survived, her hunger would've grown. Magicians need to eat freshly killed beings to sustain themselves. Eventually Cherry would have needed to find herself a young impressionable student just like John found her. John turning Cherry into a monster like himself might be a fate worse than death.
