On July 5, Uganda’s cabinet adopted Kiswahili (Swahili) – the most widely spoken indigenous language in Africa, which long had official status in Kenya and Tanzania – as an official language and made it a compulsory subject in primary and high schools, following a directive from the East African Community (EAC) bloc.

Currently, there is no indigenous language in Africa that is spoken widely enough to serve as a common tongue on the continent. I so often find myself having to communicate with a fellow African in English, the language of our erstwhile colonisers. This makes me feel ashamed, embarrassed – but there is no alternative.

Regrettably, after independence, the founding fathers of our nations failed to recognise the need to establish a common language – a language that does not belong to the colonists – that could help us communicate easily between ourselves and help forge a spirit of closeness and unity.

Instead, they pushed us to adopt English – or French or Portuguese – as our common tongue. My life, from primary school to adulthood, socially and academically, for example, has been dominated by English in my home country, Zimbabwe.

Nevertheless, African leaders must do more to limit and eventually end the dominance of colonial languages in Africa. Establishing Kiswahili as a primary transnational language throughout sub-Saharan Africa can help heal our blemished souls and restore our dignity.

Kiswahili, which had its origins in East Africa, is steeped in African history and shares similarities with a host of “Bantu” languages like ChiShona, isiZulu, Oshiwambo, isiXhosa and Lingala, to name but a few.

Bari Language

Bari is an eastern nilotic language spoken by the Karo people who mostly inhabit South Sudan and parts of Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. They consist of many distinct ethnic groups who each have their own dialect and of which the Bari people is only one, which is why the language is also called Karo or Kutuk. Great Zimbabwe

The Great Zimbabwe, or "stone buildings", is the name given to hundreds of great stone ruins spread out over 500 km (200 square mile) area within the modern-day country of Zimbabwe, which itself is named after the ruins.  The majority of the people of Zimbabwe speak a language called ChiVanhu or ChiShona, which consist of several dialects the major ones being ChiKaranga and ChiNdau.  The Shona people, in their language, call themselves Vanhu who speak a language called ChiVanhu.  The term Shona is a SiNdebele word derived from "entshonalanga", which means "people of the East and North East", since they lived East or North of Bulawayo, the capital of Lobengula.

In the first theory, the word "Zimbabwe" is a short form for "ziimba remabwe" or "ziimba rebwe", a Shona (dialect; Chikaranga) term, which means "the great or big house built of stone boulders".  In the Chikaranga dialect of the Shona language, "imba" means "a house" or "a building" and "ziimba", or "zimba", means "a huge/big building or house".  The word "ibwe" (singular, plural being "mabwe") in the Chikaranga dialect means "stone boulder".  Thus, a linguistic analysis of the word "Zimbabwe" clearly indicates.
