Chid’s mother always told him stories about the Knight Caeli Allen. Following his mother’s death, he decides to become a swordsman worthy of the invincible knight of legend, and asks his father to help him, leading to a conversation about Chid’s parentage.

Prince Chid zar Freid from the anime Vision of Escaflowne. This young boy rules a kingdom left to him by his late parents. This real ancestry is a contentious point in the anime series, but his father King Mahad of Freid loves him and accepts him as his own son regardless of what his genetics indicate.

I hope I did Sevens story justice with a portrait of the royal family of Freid.

I am not such a big fan of children in anime, usually they annoy me to much with their forced cuteness. But Prince Chid is an exception, I loved the character!

And also his dad. Did you notice that the Duke was the only one in the entire show who said some condolences about Fanelias destruction and the expulsion of its people? His death was pretty senseless yet heroic and I wished the Freid arc had lasted longer. So many open questions…

DORNKIRK

Profile

By self-developed power of super-science, even at 200 years of age, he continues to rule Zaibach as its emperor. His origin is Mystic Moon (Earth), and his Earth name was Isaac. A scientist from Earth’s past, he arrived on this world on the verge of his passing. Moreover, he is the man who killed Allen’s father. Right now, with the aim to complete his fate altering machine and manipulate fate, he set his eyes on Hitomi, who could become the key to it.

Question of Interest

Why does Dornkirk wear his hair in ringlets?

Dornkirk's curly hair seems quite eye-catching. He lived as Isaac during the European Middle Ages. Back then, high-born people curled their hair as a sign of status. It looks like this remained in his mind, and Dornkirk continues to curl his hair. He seems to be an unexpectedly scrupulous person.

Dornkirk achieved longevity thanks to the power of science. Looking at it this way, the huge throne comes as no surprise.

Dornkirk and his lovely curls. It is surprising to know he was an Earth scientist. By the way, his hair isn’t curled as he meets Leon, it really looks like it became his hairstyle after he became the emperor. Up until his very death on Earth, Isaac studied things like destiny and future prediction. The strength of this inquisitive mind was what opened the door to Gaea for him. As he was lying on his deathbed, when he thought it was his end, he opened his eyes one last time and before he knew it, he found himself on Gaea.

Vision of Escaflowne Fanfiction: Van Fanel/Dilandau Albatou mm action adventure.

A Little Matter of Revenge

Chid learns that some things just aren’t worth it. Dilandau lets Freid know what he thinks of their hospitality. (horror violence)

The hair on Chid’s head stood on end as power sizzled and crackled around the room causing the very air to spark alarmingly. They stood at the heart of a terrible storm which tore at the walls around them like a wild thing. Fierce winds whipped about, shearing layer upon layer of stone away as it sought to break free from the confines of the room, causing everyone inside to struggle to remain standing, shielding their faces with their hands, desperate to minimize the damage as tiny stones scoured their skin raw even as their robes were shredded.

Lightning flashed from one failing ward to the next, struggling to contain the wild energy and failing as the pressure continued to grow. One after another, they burst into blue flames, eating into the stones they’d been carved into like acid, chewing away at their defences.

This was all his fault, Chid knew this to the very bottom of his heart. Monk Joran had warned him of the cost of inaction and yet he’d stood there, knowing that what was happening was wrong and doing nothing to stop it. In their premature victory, they’d unleashed an even greater evil upon the world and all Chid could do was desperately pray that they somehow managed to keep it locked in here with them. No one else should pay for their arrogance. Please, he prayed to the Ancients, knowing fully well that they were all too likely to ignore him after his terrible crime against one of their own. Please save my people. It if takes my life, so be it, but let them stay safe.

“CONTAIN THE DEMON!” The taller monk shrieked above the cacophony of the storm. “Do not let the beast win! We can kill it!” Foam flecked the man’s lips and his eyes were wide, too wide. Chid could see tendons standing out beneath the man’s skin as he strained against some terrible invisible force.

Beside him, one of the monks coughed, stumbling over the words of his chant. Blood sprayed from the man’s lips, glowing with a strange light which mirrored those terrible demonic eyes and the symbol painted on it’s brow.

Trembling in terror, the man began to convulse even as he clutched harder at his prayer beads, rolling them together in is palms as if the friction could somehow keep the inevitable at bay.

Still the power built up around them, threatening to crush them all with it’s weight, making it nearly impossible to breathe and Chid could feel his head spinning as dark spots danced on the edge of his vision.

“Please” he continued to pray. “Just us. Let it stop with us. I’m so sorry, Ancients forgive me and let it stop with-” Something shoved him sharply from behind, sending him tumbling to the floor at the feet of the demon. The unexpected attack left the young duke stunned, interrupting his desperate prayer as pain flared up from his knees where they’d scraped themselves bloody on the stones.

“Take him!” Regent Ishaan yelled out, backing away as quickly as he could towards the door. “He’s the one you want! Claim your revenge and leave us in peace demon!” The man ducked through the heavy door, slamming it shut on his final words, locking them all inside with death.

DUCHY OF FREID

Freid’s capital is Godashim. Many temples have been built in the surrounding subtropical jungle. The mission of the Freid Royal Family from the nation’s founding until now has been protecting the Fortona Temple, where a “Great Power” (Power of Atlantis) has been sealed. However, it fell under Dornkirk’s hand, who was aiming for the Power Spot.

Climate

Subtropical climate, it is warm and rainy the whole year through. There are Earth-like plants such as fan palm, sago palm, and banyan (* I included links since they were so specific with the plants).

Economy

Freid is an agrarian country and such as, most of the population are farmers. Forest resources, clothes, natural rubber, and sugar became the main country products.

Government

Monarchy. A religious country led by Duke Freid. When the counselors are helpless in some question, a monk with the power of telepathy can find out the truth of the matter. Duke Freid was killed during the battle against Zaibach. By Duke’s will, he is succeeded by Prince Chid, the orphan of (* his late wife,) Marlene.

Religion

The people who have grown wings (= Atlanteans) are held in high regard. They also became the motif on the coat of arms. Religion influences politics in a major way.

Military

Duke of Freid holds all the power. He is assisted by the governor (* lit. “regent officer”, in the chart “executive officer”), Voris.

Guymelefs

Since it is a religious country, religious motifs (* Buddha statues-like motifs) can be seen on the guymelefs a lot. Could it be that the Duke is supposed to personify god?

The model countries on Earth are Thailand and Cambodia.

ALLEN SCHEZAR

Profile

Knight of the kingdom of Asturia, equivalent to 21 years of age on Earth. He’s a fine young man with a strong sense of justice, ready to throw even his country away for honor’s sake. However, he already has a son (Chid) at this age, with Marlene (deceased). Looks like the rumours of him being a playboy are true. He hates his father, who abandoned his family to track down the hidden treasures of Atlantis, eventually meeting and falling in love with Hitomi’s grandmother. Marlene does not seem to be his one and only; his feelings flicker equally between Hitomi and Millerna as well.

Question of Interest

Did Duke Freid know Chid was Allen’s child?

According to Marlene’s diary and Millerna’s words: “Chid and I were the only ones who didn’t know”, it can be presumed Duke Freid knew the truth of Chid’s parentage. Why did he recognize him as his own child? That would have to do with Marlene’s honest confession. Even if there was some remorse, in the end he acknowledged his beloved wife’s son as his own.

Allen bore a serious wound from when he was protecting Hitomi. Even looking at it is kind of painful…

Appearing in his recollection from episode 4, Allen’s lost younger sister, Celena. Where could she be now?

After Millerna’s emergency surgery, Allen wears a hospital gown for a while. He shines no matter what he wears.

Conceited in his skills, this is Allen at the time he challenged Balgus to a duel.

His current nature is a result of the lessons he took (episode 15).

A heroic story may yet be forged out of the playboy Allen.

MILLERNA ASTON

Profile

If you put Allen and her country on the scales, this Asturian princess, equivalent to 15 years old on Earth, seems to love Allen enough to abandon her country. She is interested in medicine and has been studying it for some time. At one point, she really abandons her country and acts together with Allen and the others. If it weren’t for her decisiveness and medicine skills, Allen would likely be dead. It is only when Dryden, the fiancé their parents chose for her, suddenly appears before her in episode 14, that her heart starts to waver a bit. And in episode 19, she finally gives consent to a marriage with him.

Question of Interest

Woman’s heart, an autumn sky [1]… who is Millerna’s chosen one?

Since Dryden appeared, Millerna’s maiden heart has been trembling with doubt. She even consults Hitomi (episode 15). After her father collapses because of her, she decides to marry Dryden, but as soon as she receives a blessing from Hitomi, her decision is shaken. It looks like her true choice really is Allen, but unless his heart becomes clear, her love will not be fulfilled.

[1] A Japanese saying about a changeability of heart... there's both a woman and man version.

Even in Gaean countries, there seem to be religions present. Many idols can be seen in the Duchy of Freid, and the idols are even incorporated into the guymelef design. Judging by the scenes like Merle kneeling and offering a prayer when Van is in danger, there seems to be faith in this world, too. But the religions seem to differ by country. In Freid and some other countries, Atlanteans as Gaea’s makers became the objects of worship.
