A new found family
by MusicMe_tc (@musicme-tc)
G, 11k, Wangxian
Summary: Something happened to Lan Wangji and Lan Qiren has decided to keep it a secret so as to not bring any unnecessary attention to the problem nor cause any alarm that might stress him more that it should. … At least, that was the plan until a certain rule-breaker decided to ask for Lan Wangji. Or: the story of how Wei Wuxian accidentally becomes part of the Lan family by offering to take care of Lan Wangji. Kay's comments: The cutest of Cloud Recesses Study Arc shenanigans ensue as Lan Wangji is turned into a toddler and Wei Wuxian starts taking care of him whenever Lan Qiren and Lan Xichen are busy! Very adorable all around and I loved Lan Qiren slowly warming up to Wei Wuxian and how cute Wei Wuxian is in general with de-aged Lan Wangji. Excerpt: "Oh..." And with the permission granted, he takes Lan Wangji and holds him close to his chest. Lan Wangji looks at him with those big bright eyes, and Wei Wuxian feels this awful need to pinch his cheeks or maybe just squeal and coo at him because Lan Wangji looks so cute! "We don't know exactly what happened to him," Lan Qiren interrupts his train of thoughts, "He woke up like this the other day, in the body and mind of a child. We don't know the source, nor the cause, but from what we know, this may be a spell, rather than a curse." "So someone did this on purpose..." Wei Wuxian thinks quietly to himself. "We are to believe so, yes." Lan Qiren says having heard him.
pov wei wuxian, canon divergence, cloud recesses study arc, cloud recesses shenanigans, cursed lan wangji, age regression/de-aging, child lan wangji, fluff, sweet, caring wei wuxian, soft lan qiren, good sibling jiang cheng, supportive lan xichen, feelings realization, love confessions, first kiss, getting together, happy ending

#poorly drawn mdzs#mdzs#wei wuxian#lan wangji#jiang cheng#While listening to the Lotus Seed extra I was like 'aw this art is so cute.'#Post The Fanfic Fiasco (re: last comic's tags) I am haunted by the green orbs. WWX has a bag of edible green orbs and I am in hell.#First draft of this comic's script has JC saying 'dude you wouldn't even share with me!' and I love his little sibling indignation.#Middle child power is knowing that you don't have to share with your siblings. The little wet eyes and weak hand slaps do NOTHING.#JC probably already ate all of his lotus seeds. That's on you dude!#Part of me wants to get deeper with the metaphor of the lotus seeds here. It is a gesture of a certain kind of affection.#JYL gives something to WWX she does not quite share with JC. And WWX in turn gives something to LWJ he does not share with JC.#Really puts JC's line 'You're always eating...eating eating' into a very different light.#There are other kinds of starving besides hunger. There are other ways to be a glutton than just food and drink.#WWX's character pre-burial mounds is heavily focused on 'Indulgence'. Be it wine or flirting or hunting or eating-#-or receiving admiration; He is always indulging in ways we never see JC do.#I think the intentional contrast was with the Lan's 'Live simple and without indulgence' lifestyle. LWJ is the abstainer to wwx's gluttony.#But it does expand to JC as well! Both are locked into the role model position to have friction against WWX's apparent freedom.#I think LWJ and JC (at this point) see WWX as something they both want (in different capacities) and someone they want to be.#Yet despite the history between them it is not JC who WWX reaches out to. It's LWJ.#The boy already has an inferiority complex! Stop making it accidently worse!

Time travel AU where post canon Lan Qiren travels back in time to when Wei Wuxian is 4 and has just lost his parents. Lan Qiren may hate the man (now boy), but he still follows the rules strictly and will not kill. Instead, Lan Qiren finds a 4 year old Wei Wuxian cowering in an alley hiding from dogs. He protects the boy because the rules tell him that it is his duty to do so.
There is a spiteful part of him that wants to send this boy far away. However, he reconsiders when he thinks of how the Wei Wuxian in his previous life created Demonic Cultivation when left unattended. The best way to keep the boy in line, Lan Qiren figures, is to raise him himself as a ward. Keep your friends close but your enemies closer, they say.
So that is exactly what Lan Qiren does.
Wei Wuxian is brought back to the Cloud Recesses and raised as a ward alongside Lan Xichen and Lan Wangji. Lan Qiren would prefer otherwise, but he doesn't trust anyone else but himself to control Wei Wuxian.
As time goes by, Wei Wuxian proves to be the same and different to the one that Lan Qiren knew previously. He's energetic and mischievous, carefree, with a love for teasing others. Every bit as genius and inventive as Lan Qiren knew of the boy in his previous life. However, there was a strong sense of justice that he didn't notice the last time (or refused to see, but it would take years for him to admit to himself).
And Wei Wuxian thrives in a way that Lan Qiren didn't expect. He knew that Wei Wuxian was powerful and intelligent, yet he did not realize just how so. As much as the boy loved to tease and joke around, he could also be found in the Library Pavilion studying whatever random topic caught his interest. Talking everyone's ears off on what he learned or ways that certain things can be improved upon.
It infuriates Lan Qiren to no end because many times, Wei Wuxian is right. Many times, Wei Wuxian just needs guidance to find the right direction or a different perspective. Since Lan Qiren was raising him alongside his own nephews, the people that Wei Wuxian goes to the most are them: Lan Qiren, Lan Xichen, and Lan Wangji. The latter two always happy and excited to discuss the myriad topics, while the former confused as to the feelings he's having for the boy.
Lan Qiren's sister-in-law passes, and Wei Wuxian kneels next to Lan Wangji in the snow for hours silently in comfort. It's the first indication that the boy is secretly kind and compassionate (not so much if had he paid attention the last time and rid himself of clouded judgments). It's the event that causes the two boys to be inseparable. Of course Lan Qiren is worried but, he tells himself that he will not let them marry. He will not let Wei Wuxian turn into that evil man he ended up being.
Years keep going by, and Lan Qiren finds himself slowly warming up to Wei Wuxian. He's there for many important firsts (losing his teeth, golden core formation, getting his sword, etc). He will never admit that his heart squeezed when the boy accidentally calls him A-die without thinking because he's so excited about something he's learned.
Jiang Fengmian comes to the Cloud Recesses when he finds out that Weo Wuxian is there. Desperately, he tried to convince Lan Qiren to let the boy become a part of Yunmeng Jiang. But Lan Qiren is adamant in his refusal. The boy was raised there the last time and look at how he ended up! He doesn't know that this fundamentally changed Wei Wuxian's destiny. From a tragic hero given a second chance to a free boy allowed to be happy.
The Jiang sect leader mentions during this visit that Wei Wuxian owes Lan Qiren a life debt. It's something that hadn't crossed Lan Qiren's mind. Not really. He had been raising the boy selfishly to change a horrible future. Sure. However, it was against the rules and his own morals to demand a child pay reparations to be allowed to live. He has felt the same way when Lan Sizhui, his good perfect Lan Sizhui, had been adopted into the family. To Lan Qiren, it was unfathomable to demand payment from a child in such ways.
And anyway, Wei Wuxian's genius was already making itself known. If the boy invented even half of what he came up with in his previous life (Lan Qiren crossed his fingers for no Demonic Cultivation), then the Lan Sect would be paid in full from the proceeds.
Still, years continued to creep by, and Lan Qiren began to feel pride in Wei Wuxian. He followed the rules decently well, received his punishment with little protest, and had an insatiable thirst for knowledge. The boy could be seen at any given moment debating an array of topics with seniors, elders, and peers.
When Wei Wuxian started going on night hunts with Lan Xichen and Lan Wangji, the three became known as the Three Jades of Lan. Pride bloomed even more in Lan Qiren's heart. He had successfully turned Wei Wuxian into a good and polished man. What he didn't realize was that he gave structure to a boy who needed it and didn't make him feel guilty for existing.
The Wens came and tried to burn the Cloud Recesses down but didn't succeed. Between Lan Qiren, Wei Wuxian, Lan Xichen, and Lan Wangji, the wards were strengthened, and the books copied and protected. The Sunshot campaign took longer to fight because Wei Wuxian had learned long ago of the dangers to the mind and body that it caused. He had also learned that he shouldn't rip himself apart to help others. Lan Qiren had implored the boy to never try and had used the boy's love and adoration for Lan Xichen and especially Lan Wangji to convince him.
After the Sunshot campaign, Wei Wuxian comes to Lan Qiren about the innocent Wens cultivator and noncultivator alike. By this point, Lan Qiren can agree that innocent people should not die because of selfish greed and blind prejudice. There are years of trials completed by a multisect jury. The Wen sect survives but becomes a minor sect by the time the trials and reparations are completed. Under Wen Qionglin, they focus on medicine and archery.
Wen Qionglin swears brotherhood with Wei Wuxian. It doesn't surprise Lan Qiren in the least bit. Had it been a lifetime ago, it would've infuriated him yet with all these years and direct dealings with Wen Qionglin, he respects the boy. Admires the gentleness that hides a fierce strength and sense of justice. Especially admires Wen Qing, who Lan Xichen ends up falling for and marrying. Again, had it been a lifetime ago, he would've lost his mind. Now, Lan Qiren can see Wen Qing for her genius, her directness, strictness, and her advancements in medicine.
After Lan Xichen and Wen Qing marry, Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian approach Lan Qiren and Lan Xichen to ask about marriage. There is no denying them at this point because he knows that the Wei Wuxian of his previous life is nothing like this current Wei Wuxian (he is but Lan Qiren has no one to admit it to). And anyway, he knows the two will simply elope if denied.
It's several years later, when Lan Qiren finally sits Wei Wuxian, Lan Wangji, and Lan Xichen down and tells them a story from a lifetime ago in a forgotten timeliness that may exist somewhere out there if you believe in multiple universes (not surprisingly Wei Wuxian does). They patiently listen as Lan Qiren details everything. There is silence for a long, unbearable moment when he's finished speaking.
Eventually, it's broken by a hug from Wei Wuxian, "Thank you, A-die, for giving me another chance in this life."
"I should be the one thanking you, A-Ying," Lan Qiren says softly, himself grateful for his second life.

Just spotted this on a post answering an ask about people claiming LSZ should have been taken in by the Jiang sect instead - you know, the sect that actually headed the attack to kill him and his family, the one with the abusive sect leader who has no qualms physically and mentally abusing a child, yeah that one... I mean... Firstly wtf?! Are these people for real???
I seem to be unable to reply to the bech, but I thought I should point out that essays are based on FACTS, what you would be writing is a STORY plucked from your ass!
Please, I'd love to read your ridiculous piece of fiction masquerading as something vaguely academic. I need a good laugh 😂

Summary: “Wei-qianbei, I don’t understand. What sort of curse is this?” Lan Jingyi whispers shakily.
He moves aside to reveal a small figure huddled in his husband's robes. A young child, no older than five or six, looking around in both confusion and fear.
Wei Wuxian can’t breathe.
Because the little boy has a Lan clan ribbon dangling loosely around his neck.
"…Lan Zhan?"
Or, Lan Wangji is temporarily cursed back into his six year old self. Wei Wuxian and his family must reconcile with the unexpected feelings that it brings.
Mojo's comments: De-Aged Lan Zhan is pure and adorable and this fic is soft and sweet.
It's always a joy to me when Little Lan Zhan doesn't behave so well:
Excerpt: He’d been tested though, when it was time to leave the [rabbit] meadow. A-Zhan had not wanted to go and had simply laid on the ground, refusing to move. Ignoring their pleas to get up. Lan Jingyi and Lan Sizhui looked at Wei Wuxian torn between looking concerned and like they wanted to laugh.
Wei Wuxian had sighed, attempting to pry the boy up off the ground yet A-Zhan had resisted with his full dead weight. Wei Wuxian had then tried to use the little rabbit toy to coax the boy up, making it tickle and kiss his face, but A-Zhan just glowered and turned his face into the dirt.

rabbit!LAN WANGJI who likes to just sit. you don't mind — he's tiny, cute, serious and warm, and when he sits, he looks even more charming, especially with those protruding ears, like two radars that easily turn in the direction of an interesting sound, but usually always stay in place. however, his golden eyes never leave you, constantly glancing sideways and as if waiting for you to do something to immediately react, and you can't deny that this puts a certain pressure on you when something is expected of you, but you don't understand what. after all, rabbits are social hybrids, and you realize that this is probably a signal for another rabbit, — but you are not a rabbit, and not even close.
you really need a lot of desire, patience, time, interest and Lan Xichen before you understand what the little rabbit expects from you — grooming. after all, it's natural that rabbits have their own rules of communication, and as he explains to you, "grooming is a very important and necessary thing in the social interaction of rabbits."
when your hand gently appears in front of LAN WANGJI'S face to see how he will react, he is silent for a few minutes before lowering his ears, slightly closing his eyes, watching you, but pretty much still letting you do what you want. his hair is soft, almost silky, and when you lightly rub him behind his soft, fluffy ears, you hear a soft "tooth purr" that Lan Xichen has already informed you about, unexpectedly taking your question seriously about what LAN WANGJI is trying to hint at. LAN WANGJI'S body is cute, much softer and warmer than you initially thought, and he doesn't even mind when you put your hand on his cheek while you keep rubbing behind his twitching ear. cutie.
... maybe you should have listened more attentively to something there about the "important thing" and "social hierarchy" when LAN WANGJI starts following you when he sees you, expecting that you will always join if he goes somewhere and you need to go there too, and almost impatiently asking, "what are your plans" and "can you go with him." but, hey, you didn't know that in the rabbit hierarchy it works this way, especially when he starts stroking you himself, expecting you to accept a return offer of grooming, and seriously offended if you refuse.
and when he starts to see that you dare to groom someone else? oh, you've never seen someone so jealous, angry, hurt and cold at the same time, as if you offered a candy to a child only to give it to another, — and by the emotions in his eyes you can be sure that this is the most accurate comparison that came to your mind.

MDZS thoughts; wangxian
Out of all the MXTX couples, I think Wangxian is definitely the most polarising,  especially when you consider how like-minded Hualian are, and how mutually ridiculous Bingqiu are. It’s interesting to think about, because even through character design, Bingqiu’s christmas tree themed robes and Hualian’s red and white complimentary robes, Wangxian falls outside of that, their black and white robes always being a direct contrast to each other in the most basic form. But after deeper consideration, Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian are shown to be incredibly similar in the ways that draw them together (with of course, some fundamental differences). This post will contain spoilers, but why would you be on Tumblr if you didn't want to get spoiled?
I think a good place to start this would be with ‘righteousness’, because it pretty much explains the other points I had planned to make anyway (e.g. loyalty, isolation, duty). It’s a running bit throughout MDZS that Wei Wuxian is just a depraved evil demonic cultivator, but that’s the beauty of the statement, because it contrasts his actual, very noble personality. The way in which he presents his righteousness is where the majority of the problem arises though, because Wei Wuxian is a true and staunch defender of people he deems less fortunate, and those people also happen to be the ones which everyone else is venting their hatred at. His defence of the Wen’s was truly admirable, but even through his friendship with MianMian, or his obsession with being friends with Lan Wangji, his dedication to doing what he believes is right is unmoving. And this drives people away from him, casting him aside as a traitor and eventually leading to his own demise, but he stays true to what he believes is right, which is protecting those who need it.
Lan Wangji is much of the same type of person. Lan Wangji has always been (and I quote) ‘righteous, perfect, and void of worldly desires’, the very pillar of how everyone else should act. He not only holds everyone around him to impossibly high standards, but lives by them himself, which drives a wedge between him and everyone around him. People are uncomfortable with the staunch and unyielding standards of righteousness that he holds people to, which leads to them pushing him up as this impossible standard that they should be trying to emulate but they just end up saying ‘really, who can be like Hanguang-jun, he’s always been perfect!’. ‘It’s lonely at the top’ is something that is so perfectly applicable here, because Lan Wangji’s desire to uphold the standards of righteousness to protect those who cant protect themselves divides him from the general populace, placing him firmly as unreachable, above all the rest.
Both Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian’s unyielding righteousness and nobility is one of their greatest strengths and a very admirable character trait to have, but it also ends up being their greatest tragedy, because it isolates them from all that they love or could love. It even pushes them away from each other, because Lan Wangji is trying so desperately to pull Wei Wuxian to his side and make him adhere to the only way he can understand others (through his impossible standards), but Wei Wuxian is unmoving in his defence of the Wen’s, helping them when no one else will. Unstoppable force meets immovable object?
Of course, there are so many differences between Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian but really, those are all pretty surface level. Wei Wuxian’s mind works a million miles per hour, thinking of countless solutions and strategies, whereas Lan Wangji adheres to the traditional problem solving solutions. Wei Wuxian is loud and vibrant, and Lan Wangji is stoic and cold. Wei Wuxian wears black, and Lan Wangji wears white. Simple observations can tell you how they differ, because they obviously aren't the same and it would be weird if they were. These differences are important to consider, but their similarities are crucial to the development of their relationship too.

Possibly an unpopular opinion.. but wwx was not a father figure for A-Yuan during their time in the burial mounds. He was more like a cool, but crazy uncle imo 🤣
Everyone be like, wwx did a good job... It was lwj who raised him 🤔 I mean, don't get me wrong.. our boy Wei did saved him twice and is so happy to have him in his life again. But lwj deserve most of the credit ✌️
Anon, I'm afraid I will have to disagree here and say that I don't agree with this take. If you are ascribing parental figures to one of them, then they both should get the credit, it’s not Wei Wuxian’s fault he was killed after only a year. I’m sure if you ask any number of people who have lost a parent young but they remember their parent being a parent while they were alive, that’s still the feeling they have now.
Yeah, Wei Wuxian plays with him a lot and teases him. That's not necessarily behavior that's only relegated to uncles. Not only does that sound pretty similar to Lan-furen playing with little Lan Xichen and Lan Wangji, but it also sounds like my dad, who definitely was a parent, just one that did his guidance through much more play related activities. There is more than one way to be a caring, good parent.
Also that being said, there are plenty of interactions and character moments that feel very parental in nature. Here he is scolding A-Yuan for eating corpse dirt:
Wei WuXian bent down and picked up the child, letting him sit on his arm, “What do you mean get him away? Can’t you talk properly? A-Yuan, why do you hug the leg of everyone you meet? Off you go! Don’t bite your nails right after you play with mud. Do you know what the mud is made of? Move your hand! Don’t touch my face either. Where’s Granny?”Wei WuXian bent down and picked up the child, letting him sit on his arm, “What do you mean get him away? Can’t you talk properly? A-Yuan, why do you hug the leg of everyone you meet? Off you go! Don’t bite your nails right after you play with mud. Do you know what the mud is made of? Move your hand! Don’t touch my face either. Where’s Granny?”
Here they are with some soup, and I double checked, Wei Wuxian is teasing A-Yuan and saying he's being a good son here. Filial piety is specifically the respect from a child to a parent or ancestor.
Wen Yuan couldn’t stop after just a few mouthfuls, yet he still knew to give the bowl to Wei WuXian, speaking as though he was presenting him with a treasure, “… Brother Xian… Xian eat.”
Wei WuXian seemed to like it a lot, “Yes, very good. So you do know what filial piety means.”
As well as A-Yuan seems to think of Wei Wuxian as a father secretly. A-Yuan gets lost in the market and while looking for Wei Wuxian, discovers and gets scared by Lan Wangji.
In the beginning, Wen Yuan was still holding onto his leg. Wei WuXian walked back and forth, picking out potatoes and bargaining. Hanging on his leg, Wen Yuan felt tired just a while later. His short arms were sore, so he let go to rest for a bit. Yet, in just a few moments, the rush of the people on the streets made him reel left and right, losing his sense of direction. His line of sight was quite low. He walked here and there, but couldn’t find Wei WuXian’s long legs and black boots. Everything in front of his eyes were pants so grimey that they were the color of dirt. He grew more and more petrified. As he spun around dizzily, he bumped into someone’s leg.
Hiding in the crowd as he heard the words ‘his dad’, Wei WuXian almost exploded with laughter. Lan WangJi immediately looked up, denying it, “I am not.”
Wen Yuan didn’t know what the people were talking about. When children were scared, they always called out to those they were close to. And so, sobbing, he called, “Dad! Dad…”
A-Yuan has not even officially met Lan Wangji yet. The narrative tells us he's scared and calling for those that they were close to. The only person who could hear him is Wei Wuxian. He calls him "A-die".
Wei Wuxian’s parenting is definitely a lot more unorthodox than most parenting we see, but let’s keep in mind that he is twenty-one at the most at the time. He is a very young man who is putting himself in the position of caring for a child in a hellistic time on earth. His main goal is to make sure that A-Yuan grows up feeling happy and cared for without ever worrying about their situation. He can’t erase all of it, but he can sure as hell make sure that A-Yuan never feels like everyone’s miserable. A-Yuan also seems to be the only child in the camps, who else does he have to play with?
The relationship between the three of them is interesting because there is no singular term that Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji use for Sizhui, nor does Sizhui quite define them in one particular relationship. He calls Wei Wuxian “Xian-gege” most of the time, but also “A-Die” once when he’s scared. He describes Lan Wangji as being like a “father and brother” to him. The two men clearly both take pride and interest in his upbringing and even take him out on special trips alone with just the two of them.
If you conclude that Lan Wangji feels more like a parent to Lan Sizhui, keep in mind that they both give Sizhui the same sense of safety. He connects the two with the same emotion.
Wei WuXian turned to him, “SiZhui, you’re the most sensible one here. Guide them a bit, won’t you? Can you do that?”
Lan SiZhui nodded. Wei WuXian added, “Don’t be scared.”
Lan SiZhui, “I am not.”
“Really?”
“Really.” Lan SiZhui smiled, “Senior, you are so much like HanGuang-Jun.”
Wei WuXian was puzzled, “Us? How are we alike?” They were obviously like fire and ice. However, Lan SiZhui only grinned in reply, and led the rest of the group out.
He continued his thought silently, I do not know, either, but they just feel similar. It is as though if either one of the two seniors are present, I will not need to be scared or worry about anything.
And both of Wangxian conclude that they are both responsible for how he turned out, as well as the same soft look in their eyes.
At least, Lan SiZhui couldn’t hold it any longer. With a loud cry, he leaped up. One hand around Wei WuXian and the other around Lan WangJi, he pulled the two into a tight embrace. Wei WuXian and Lan WangJi bumped into each other from the hug. Both of them were surprised.
Lan SiZhui buried his head between their shoulders, “HanGuang-Jun, Senior Wei, I… I…”
Hearing his muffled voice, Wei WuXian and Lan WangJi exchanged a look, only inches apart. They both saw something soft within each other’s eyes.
Wei WuXian fixed his mood and put his hand on Lan SiZhui’s back, patting, “Enough, what are you crying for?”
Lan SiZhui, “Not crying… Just… I suddenly feel so frustrated, but so happy as well… I do not know how to describe it…”
After some silence, Lan WangJi laid his hand onto his back as well and patted. Lan WangJi, “There is no need to describe it then.”
Wei WuXian, “That’s right.”
Lan SiZhui didn’t say anything. He hugged them even tighter.
Soon, Wei WuXian exclaimed, “Hey, hey, hey, why are your arms so strong? Definitely deserving of HanGuang-Jun’s teachings…”
Lan WangJi glanced at him, “You taught him as well.”
Wei WuXian, “No wonder he grew up so nicely.”
There is no single defined relationship, but it is clearly close, affectionate and Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji definitely have a mentor/parental interest in his life and take a close hand in guiding him on the road to adulthood. However the thing that is clear is that Wangxian both share the same feelings and give Sizhui the same emotions. If one is an uncle, both are. If one is a parent, both are.
Also again, I think it’s super unfair to blame Wei Wuxian for not being involved in A-Yuan’s upbringing while he was dead, especially since every time Wei Wuxian thinks of Sizhui, Sizhui keeps making him proud and thinking of how good a child he is. Lan Wangji also clearly is raising Sizhui to be aware of Wei Wuxian as he was and to when he is ready, know the other family that he lost.
If Wangxian were together and Wei Wuxian still died young, would you say that Lan Wangji still deserves all the credit? It’s not like Wei Wuxian walked out or chose not to be involved. He died. Of course Lan Wangji has put in the more time, but that’s not something either of them ever wanted.
So yeah, it probably is kind of an unpopular opinion. And not one I particularly agree with either. Sorry!
