Children Will Listen / Give Yourself Grace
Years ago, there was a musical I badly wanted to do, Into the Woods. And I wanted to be the Witch.
Why? She sang my favorite song.
Careful the things you say
Children will listen
Careful the things you do
Children will see and learn
Children may not obey, but children will listen
Children will look to you for which way to turn
To learn what to be
Careful before you say "Listen to me"
Children will listen
Why bring this up? Well... you'll see.
This afternoon, we took the kids to a museum in town. It was an hour drive, a lot of planning, but totally worth it.
My Eldest is a huge fan of solo time with each of us. So, Matthew stayed with the younger two in the kid area while Eldest and I made the first pass around the museum.
We came across this gorgeous glass tree with notes tossed beneath it. Some of them caught my eye. Beautiful, right?
Glancing around, I realized there were more beautiful notes on the wall. The exhibit was alive.
I read the instructions to my kid that we were to leave love to the ancestors or encouragement and words of wisdom. He and I both set to work on our notes, and when he finished, I looked over to see what his said.
I nearly burst into tears. See, I spend a lot of time speaking life into my kids. I didn't really have that growing up. In fact, I had the opposite of that. I heard a lot of things growing up that weren't great.
So, I work really hard to always speak life into my kids. To say what I think they need and what I know I wish I heard. And I try to spread love and kindness to all I meet.
Looking over to my Little's paper, I saw the exact same thing on mine. He's listening.
Me: You wrote the same thing as me!
Him: You're always saying it.
Yeah, I do say that a lot. Because, it's what I needed to hear when I was a kid. But it's also what I need to hear today.
My Eldest is as much a perfectionist as I am. We both want to do our best at all times, and when we think we've fallen short, it hurts.
And I have met a lot of other creatives who feel the same way. So, if the New Year is making you question how much you've accomplished this year, or if you're feeling like you're not measuring up, I invite you to listen to my kid:
Don't forget to give yourself grace
You're doing better than you think. Heck, I question myself as a parent almost every day. But every day my kids show me that they are listening.
So, give yourself grace. You've got this.

Listening to this version of the classic show tune when it struck me how well this would work in (aka I’d like to see one) an Owl House amv, some lyrics might work more literally or figuratively than others in my vision of what scenes would be used but they’re all freaking poignant
