She had never really meant for it to start. It wasn’t like her, the secret meetings, hushed whispers, and built up lies. But there was something about all of it that dragged her under the current and swept her up that she couldn’t deny or ignore. It was never her intention to start an affair with Nicholas Scratch. Though it was somewhat of an inevitability. From the minute they met, a line in the sand was drawn and they spent the better part of two years trying not to come closer to it. But the magnetic pull between them was undeniable, and soon the line in the sand was just as messed up as their sheets.
She hadn’t planned it, and the second she let her guard down they’d both fallen into a hole they couldn't quite climb out of. She’d been sleeping with Nick for months and talked to him about more things than she never dared to with Harvey.
Harvey.
The high school sweetheart she couldn’t let go. Or rather she couldn’t admit the relationship was failing, because she wasn’t a quitter. But she couldn’t seem to quit Nick either.

Chapter 21: Kittens
Chloe had managed to run off before Adrien and Marinette could finish their dinner. Sabrina sorrowfully explained that she spilled her tart all over Chloe’s designer jeans and that ‘she couldn’t bear to be seen looking like a disaster’ to even say goodbye.
Adrien and Marinette looked worried for a moment, making sure they gave their star performance of concern for their friend. Sabrina then gave them a hug for coming out with them tonight, even if it did end up being a disaster, with a near-silent, ‘Chloe says to call her after’ into his ear, which Adrien promptly nodded to.
“What should we do now?” Marinette asked as she watched Sabrina run over to the elevator where Chloe was waiting. “I know Chloe wanted to see that movie. I don’t feel right seeing it without her.”
“Well, we could still go and see a movie? Or we can just go for a walk?”
“Let’s go for a walk and see where the night takes us then.”
Adrien smiled and tried to pay for their meal, only to find out that Chloe had paid their tab at some point during the dinner. He helped Marinette out of her chair and gestured her to walk ahead of him, only to open the door as they entered out into the chilly night air.
They walked side by side, each wishing they could hold on to each other’s hand. Instead, they chose to steal silent moments of lovesick stares between the silence and silly conversations.
They made their way towards the Seine as they contemplated their next adventure, but they realized how late it had become when they passed by a slew of shops that were beginning to close for the night. They did happen to see one that was still open—a pet shop storefront—the lights still on this late in the evening. Adrien cooed out as he noticed a black cat with a white spot over his right eye, and he couldn’t help but squeal as he noticed the little kittens that played around their mother from a spot inside the store.
“Aww. Looks like my minou has a soft spot for little kittens.” She teased as he pressed his hand against the glass.
Adrien kneeled down to see the small selection at eye level while Marinette looked to see if the store was still open for a little while longer.
“Adrien, look.” She said, pointing to the door. “There’s an adoption event tonight. We know that we can’t buy a kitten, but maybe we could be allowed to pet them? Do you want to do that?”
Adrien turned to her and smiled, excitement flashing across his eyes. “Yes!”
He grabbed onto her hand and ran into the shop, smiling as he walked towards the shopkeeper who was petting an orange tabby kitten at the counter.
“Hello. How can I help you?” She smiled politely, placing a kiss on the kitten’s head before placing it back in the large pen. When she looked back at them, she tilted her head as she came to a realization. “Oh! You’re Adrien Agreste.”
“I am.” He responded shyly, rubbing the back of his neck for comfort. “I noticed you have an adoption event going on. I can’t buy one, but we were wondering if we could play with the kittens for a little bit?”
“Of course! They love to play. We close in an hour though. I’ll give you a fifteen-minute warning before then.”
“That’s perfect. Thank you.”
Marinette and Adrien walked towards the open pen, each scooping up a tiny kitten to play with. Adrien had chosen a black cat with white spots on his paws, while Marinette picked up a white kitten with gray splotches on his belly and tail.
“They are so cute!” She squealed, pressing her nose into its fur.
“They really are.” He replied as he scratched under the kitten’s chin. He knew it was something that Plagg loved, and the roaring purr only proved that the kitten loved it just as much.
“I wish I could take him home.” Adrien muttered as he pressed his nose to the kitten’s nose.
“I don’t see why not.” Marinette answered back, a soft smile mirroring her affectionate gaze as she looked at her boyfriend. “It would be a purrfect addition in our lives.”

Day 1: Black Cats & Apple Pie
Day 1: Black or Apple Pie
A/N: I’m not going to lie, this is based on Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Also Dabi is Touya but he goes by Touya and named his dog Dabi. Does that make sense?? Summary: It’s a chilly night and you’re sitting out on your front porch with your cat, Salem, when you hear footsteps coming from the woods. Pairing: Warlock!Dabi/Todoroki Touya x Witch!Reader Word Count: 958 Themes: Halloween???, Paranormal AU Warning(s): Strong Language
“Lovely night, isn’t it, Salem?” You mused. It was a beautiful autumn night. The moon was high in the sky behind gray clouds, the faint smell of rain lingered from when it stormed hours ago, and thin layers of fog lingered in the air. A particularly brisk breeze sent shivers down your spine, but it didn’t phase you much. You adored nights like these.
Your familiar merely let out a “mur” at your comment. The black cat could talk to you -- and he often did! -- but he was much too tired to do so. That or he was just being very lazy. He must’ve thought it bothersome to talk when he didn’t feel the need to. Salem was quite rude but you wouldn’t have it any other way. You didn’t want a familiar that obeyed your every whim and sought to please you every moment. You wanted a partnership, which is what you and Salem had.
You remember the night you met him two years ago.
You were about to turn 16. You’d just gotten out of the bath and stepped into your now freezing cold room. You could see your breath in the air, it was so cold.
Looking around for the source of the sudden chill, you found your window to be open, with claw marks on the window sill. Something was in your room. “Shit.” You hurried to close the window to stop any more chilly air from getting in. The second it shut closed, a voice called your name.
“(Y/N)!” Came a raspy male voice.
You whirled around and examined the entire room. You could see nothing, but you knew something was there. “Who are you?” You tried your best to sound unafraid. “Show yourself.”
A terrifying creature with a skeleton face, black skin, glowing green eyes, spindly fingers, and a long tail peeked out from behind your open closet door. “I heard you calling in the woods,” You heard the same raspy voice. “and I came.” The creature disappeared behind the door and a black cat appeared in its place. It meowed as it walked towards you.
“Aw…” You picked the animal up in your arms, listening to it purr. “Such a pretty kitty. What’s your name?”
You supposed you were reminiscing too long for the cat’s liking.
Salem peaked one green eye open and looked at you irritatedly, “Pet me.” Oh, so he was capable of talking! Damned cat. You rolled your eyes. Still, you did as your familiar asked, smoothing your hand over soft black fur. With your free hand you picked up your mug of hot chocolate that you’d set aside earlier. It was now the perfect temperature thanks to the cold weather.
It truly was a nice night.
Then out of nowhere, Salem shot up in your lap, the fur of his back sticking up and a light growl emitting from him. You set your mug down and looked around nervously, “What’s wrong, Salem? You see something?” Despite the fluffy jacket over an even fluffier sweater and the fluffiest sleep pants, a brisk autumn breeze passed right through you, sending shivers down your spine.
“Something’s here.” Salem warned you before jumping off your lap and bounding to the side of your house, out of your line of sight.
“Salem! Wait for me! Fucking cat.” You chased after your familiar, running even faster when you heard him hiss. Then you heard a bark and some cursing. When you rounded the corner, you laughed at the sight before you.
There in all his glory was your wonderful boyfriend Todoroki Touya, holding a pie dish above his head as his rottweiler (and familiar) kept moving between jumping onto his thigh to try and reach the pie and trying to play with Salem. The cat kept swatting at the dog’s face and hissing.
You walked over and picked your familiar up into your arms, “Salem, be nice to Dabi.”
“Your mate is here...and no. I won’t be nice to that slobbering buffoon.”
You bit back a laugh. “What?” Touya spoke up. “What did Salem say about Dabi?” Other warlocks and witches can’t hear what a familiar other than their own says, so all he heard was a meow.
“Oh, nothing to worry your pretty little head over.” You turned around and began walking back to the porch. Your boyfriend and his dog trailed after you.
When you walked into the warm house you yelled out, “Touya’s here!” From the kitchen came your dad, Shouta, and your older brother, Hitoshi. Your dad stared Touya down with narrowed eyes; he wasn’t very fond of your boyfriend.
At first glance, Touya looked like a bad influence. His hair was dyed black, he had 3 nose piercings, a tongue piercing, multiple ear piercings, and had tattoos running down his arms and hands. He didn’t look responsible or reliable.
But he was one of the best people you’d ever met. Just because he looked a certain way, didn’t mean he wasn’t an amazing guy. Your dad was just old fashioned.
Your brother seemed to like Touya, so that was good.
“Um,” Touya looked around awkwardly. “my mom made apple pie. She wanted me to give it to you guys.”
At the mention of pie, your father eased up on his hardened stare and Hitoshi practically snatched the dish out of Touya’s hands and ran with it to the kitchen. You chased after your brother, “Hey, you better not eat all of it, jackass!” Salem chased after you, Dabi after him, and Touya after Dabi.
Shouta sighed and trailed after the teenagers and familiars in his kitchen. If anyone deserved a slice of hot apple pie, it was him.

A Different WIP Wednesday: Behind Closed Doors
This isn’t exactly a WIP but it is a completed scene from an abandoned (for now) collection of Nabrina missing/extended scenes from the show.  This one is from the end of Part 2!
The dress was uncomfortable.  It was beautiful and while she didn’t mind a collar or a plunging neckline, the gold threaded dress she was currently wearing was itchy.  And the fact that Lucifer had picked it out for her made her want to rip it off even more.  She knew she couldn’t though, the literal world was depending on her to pull this off.
So she slipped on the gold shoes as well and played with the mask, contemplating waiting to put it on until she got there.   They were all waiting for her downstairs and she knew Lucifer was waiting for her too at the Academy.  She could picture his smug smile while sitting atop his throne of skulls, believing he’d won.  But he hadn’t, not yet at least.
She’d attempted a Hail Malphus pass in trying to stop her Aunt’s wedding.  She and Nick had worn another glamour and it had gotten them both expelled.  But this was even more of a risk, more of a last ditch effort to keep Satan himself from destroying the Earth.  From keeping herself from becoming the Queen at his side, and his child bride?  Her stomach churned at the thought.  His face had been dripping with victory when she’d tried to defeat him at the stone altar.  Heaven, his bragging eyes had even been present when she showed up at Dorian’s and he revealed his master plan.  He’d nearly jumped with glee when Nick appeared from behind the curtain, finding joy in the tears that were running down both their cheeks and enjoying that their relationship was in ruins.  In Lucifer’s mind, it was one less tie his daughter had to the world she loved so much.
Nick hadn’t given up there though, showing up in her room hours later begging for forgiveness, for her to see his love for her had been true despite what the Dark Lord had tasked him to do.
Fix the Acheron and maybe I won’t hate you for the rest of my life.
That’s what she had said to him.  But it couldn’t have been farther from the truth.  Hate him?  She couldn’t.  That’s why his betrayal had hurt so much.  It had cut a deep gash in her heart that he had mended after her breakup with Harvey.  It had made her question everything since he’d sat with her at lunch, which Nick claimed he’d done out of his own volition and sheer awestruck reaction to seeing her for the first time.  She wanted to believe that, and she guessed a part of her did or she wouldn’t have let him help.  Her trust in him was shaky at best.  She was unwilling to allow him to be the one to help her zip up that uncomfortable dress or clasp her shoes.  But she could trust that he was smart, and a damn good warlock.  So she handed over the Acheron and sent him away to work on it.
He’d taken it in stride, accepted it as the tiniest of olive branches.  If he couldn’t hold her hand at least he could work on something to hold the Dark Lord.  He found a quiet room in the Mortuary and went to work immediately, putting all he had into it.  His heart had plummeted into his stomach, making him nearly lose his lunch when the Dark Lord told Sabrina of his plans.  It was nothing he’d expected, and thought his devotion had to do with guiding a wayward witch to sign the book of the beast.  Now he knew he played a role in the end of the world.  He didn’t care much about that, meaning what he said to Sabrina in her kitchen.  He only cared about her and it was Lucifer’s statements about her ruling by his side that had Nick fuming the most.  That’s what had kept him working furiously on the Acheron, hands shaking and mind racing as he said all of his spells.
As the time drew nearer, and really it wasn’t enough time but it had to do, they all met in the Mortuary foyer before walking over to the Academy.  Sabrina was in her gold dress and everyone else wore their demon glamours; it would be quite the show.  Nick kept his distance from her, his entire focus trained on the Acheron still in his hands as he continued to mutter spells despite the fact that they were nearly leaving.  She took note of how he looked at it, eyes almost begging for it to work.  His entire face was furrowed in concentration, but it wasn’t the cute kind she’d admired when he’d perch on her bed studying or they’d research in the Sanctum.  Back then she could swoop in and kiss his lips or his jaw and it’d draw a chuckle from him and he’d be willing to take a break.  This concentration was desperate, and Sabrina knew without a doubt that desperation was for her.
She also knew that she could try and kiss him all she wanted, and he’d still be working on that damn Acheron.  Because that is what would save them all.
Save her.
Still her feet that wore the uncomfortable heels couldn’t move in her uncomfortable dress to go to him.  It seemed too big a task in that moment, like facing down Nick was scarier than facing down the Dark Lord.
Yet when they finally started the journey to the Academy, her mask in hand because she couldn’t bring herself to add another uncomfortable gold item to her outfit just yet.  She found her gazes darting to him and her footfalls falling into step with his.  Even when it seemed they were miles apart, they were in sync.  He caught her looking nearly every time, having stolen some looks of his own.  He could sense she was a little scared, his fearless girl.
Except she wasn’t his anymore, he’d lost her.  She didn’t lose him though, she never would.  He’d tied himself to her long before Lucifer came calling.  She didn’t believe that right now but that didn’t really matter.  All that mattered to Nick was that she got through this, that she wasn’t forced into a role she didn’t want and that she survived.  And if his tie to her tethered him to a sinking ship or disaster, he’d hold on tight because it’d be worth it.  Because she’d be above the surface breathing another day.
Her heart tugged to walk by him, take the Acheron out of his shaking hand and so it could hold hers instead.  But her head kept her in between her Aunts with her eyes forward, avoiding his dark eyes for the rest of the trip.  She knew how easily she got lost in them.
Her eyes stayed ahead but her thoughts continued to drift to him.  She kicked herself for using the time she should be preparing to dwell on her boyfriend, her ex-boyfriend?  She wasn’t sure what they were anymore, but what she did know was that the story of them wouldn’t stop replaying in her mind.  She begged and prayed anyone left out there that it wasn’t all a lie.  She didn’t think it was even possible to fake the glint he’d had in his eye when he asked her to the Valentine’s Dance.  Or how his smile emphasized the curl of his tongue against hers when he’d kissed her properly for the first time.  Not that their stage kiss hadn’t felt real all on its own.  She hoped that he’d meant it when he toasted to her future as a High Priestess of the Church of Night.  And they hadn’t spoken of it, but what business would he have had lying to his familiar when he yelled out that he loved her, trying to get Amalia to spare Sabrina.  The same broken pleading was in his voice when he kneeled in front of her and told her he really did fall in love with her.
And in return she spat in his face.
It seemed deserved at the time, and it might have been.  But as her footsteps brought her closer to the Academy, she’d wished she’d have told him she loved him too, thrown the Dark Lord’s devotion right back in his face with a grab of Nick’s hand.
Because she was pretty sure she had fallen in love with him right back.
Nobody wasted any time when they climbed the steps to the Academy.  Zelda led the charge in search of Lilith and next steps.  Nick passed the Acheron to Ambrose as he walked by, shooting it one last inspecting look.
Nick and Sabrina somehow found themselves alone on the steps in the back of the line, and he stopped her from going in with two gentle fingers on her arm.  If she was surprised she didn’t show it.  In fact, she looked almost relieved he had done it.
“Sabrina.”  Nick started.  His voice sounded like gravel, rough and painful.  He reached out and his fingertips grazed the gold fabric of her dress.  She let him do it, which surprised both of them.  “I know this is all messed up and I hate the reason we’re all here...but you look beautiful.”
“Thank you, Nick.”  She answered him, using his shortened name.  It made him visibly calmer, though being alone with her right now still made him nervous.  He couldn’t help commenting on her beauty.  He should have told her more just how stunning he found her, more exquisite than anyone else he’d ever seen.  So just in case, he’d told her now.
“I’m so sorry, Sabrina.”  Nick apologized as he changed the subject.  He couldn’t help apologizing one last time either.  He hadn’t known what he was going to say when he stopped her, and the pressure of it all had obviously turned his brain to mush.  In reality there was nothing to say, he just wanted to be by her one last time.
She squeezed her eyes shut to try to keep the tears at bay.  She didn’t think they could really haven’t this conversation now, despite not wanting to go into this with things left unsaid.  She took a deep breath when he struggled to find more words.  She grabbed the hand that was playing with her dress and intertwined their fingers.  His hands were warm and soft, just as she’d remembered.
“Nick…”. She said his name again and took a step closer.  They were outside in the open but somehow it had felt like the air had been sucked away.  The only life giving source left was each other and it seemed nothing could tear their eyes apart.  She saw the worry in his, muddled with something else she could only describe as love.  She figured hers looked the same and she cursed Lucifer all over again for playing with both of their hearts.  She leaned in a little bit more, and he memorized the scent of her, just in case.  As she breathed him in she thought she might have kissed him, might have folded herself in his arms, or at least told him she’d forgiven him.
But she didn’t do any of those things because Lilith slammed the door open and demanded Sabrina come with her.  They couldn’t keep the Dark Lord waiting any longer.
With one more lingering and longing look Nick gave a supportive nod.
“We’ll talk after?”  He asked with hope and lifted his and to gently graze her cheek.  She leaned into it slightly and nodded quickly in response.  With a deep breath he went inside the door and looked back at her once before disappearing down a hallway in search of the others.
Lilith rolled her eyes and dragged Sabrina inside, giving her one last recap as to the plan as Sabrina out on her mask.  Sabrina had the plan down and was filled with a hopefully well placed confidence that this would all work.  The sooner they started the ruse the sooner the dress could come off and her comfy PJ’s could go on.  The sooner she could she have a real conversation with Nick.  One without the end of the world looming or hiding behind curtains.
She couldn’t wait until she could.
Because she wasn’t pretty sure anymore.
She loved him.
And when this was all over, when the Dark Lord was trapped in the Acheron, she’d tell him.
But she’d be too late.

With baseball quickly approaching (for who knows how long), time for a pandemic installment of Classic Movies Everyone’s Seen But Me!
Summertime (1955)
David Lean works small (for him) in terms of both running time and vistas. He does a wonderful job with Venice, making the city practically a character in its own right -- and as someone who knows Venice well and loves it, I only caught Lean cheating on the geography a couple of times.
The real star isn’t the setting but Katherine Hepburn. Hepburn plays Jane Hudson, a middle-aged secretary from Akron, Ohio, who claims to have given up on romance. She hasn’t, of course, but it appears as if romance has given up on her -- Jane is a third wheel for the movie’s other couples and feels left out of even men on the make’s appraisals, spending the early part of the movie bonding with a street kid and the widow who runs her pensione. I’d write that it’s the kind of part that wasn’t written for actresses in the 1950s, but it’s the kind of part that isn’t written for actresses today. Hepburn inhabits the character beautifully, letting you see Jane’s hesitation and heartbreak in piercing scenes that sometimes rely entirely on body language, and Lean gives her the space to work, even when it’s an uncomfortable experience. A near-flawless performance.
The love story feels a little slight at first, but the ambiguity about what you should feel is intriguing. (Apparently this was even more the case in The Time of the Cuckoo, the play upon which Summertime was based.) Extra points for the Code-evading shot that tells us two characters have consummated their relationship. It’s only slightly subtler than the famous conclusion of North by Northwest.
Here Comes Mr. Jordan (1941)
Claude Rains has a marvelous time as the title character, an unruffled bureaucrat in charge of the afterlife who has to fix the case of a boxer taken up to Heaven a bit too soon. (The film was remade in the 70s with Warren Beatty and called Heaven Can Wait, the name used in its first incarnation as a play.) Rains is terrific, but the rest of the movie is pretty forgettable: Robert Montgomery is genial but not particularly memorable as prizefighter Joe Pendleton, and the plot logic breaks down completely in the endgame.
The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938)
Another Rains vehicle, in he stars as the evil Prince John, scheming brother of Richard the Lionhearted and foe of Robin Hood, played (of course) by Errol Flynn. Rains somehow retains his dignity despite a horrific wig and some astonishing costumes -- there’s one black and silver getup whose shoes have to be seen to be believed.
But all the characters are wearing ridiculous things all the time, shown off via the movie’s thoroughly saturated palette. There are men-at-arms in purple and pink motley, the merry men’s green tights, Flynn’s honest-to-goodness bedazzled emerald top, a lady-in-waiting’s Fancy Shriner fez, and we haven’t even discussed the get-ups Olivia de Havilland sports. The costume designer whizzes past All Too Much before the first reel’s over and just keeps going. And the dialogue keeps up with the costumes. Robin Hood may be the campiest movie I’ve ever seen -- it makes The Birdcage look like Shoah.
Flynn is capable with a sword and performs his stunts with swashes properly buckling, but man oh man could he not act. He has two basic expressions: fighting and making merry, and looks a little lost when the story requires him to investigate whether a situation requires choosing between the two.
Fortunately that doesn’t happen too often, and you’ll have fun anyway. This is the template for about a billion adventure stories made since then, and it’s entertaining even when you’re not elbowing the other person on the couch to point out what was waiting in Claude Rains’s dressing room this time. Think of it as a live-action cartoon and enjoy the ride.
Love in the Afternoon (1957)
Audrey Hepburn is the innocent, cello-playing daughter of a Paris private investigator (Maurice Chevalier) who interferes with her father’s work by preventing an American playboy (Gary Cooper) from getting shot by a jealous husband, then pretends to outdo the playboy at his own no-consequences game.
The story is light and amusing, with Chevalier ably serving as the fulcrum who helps it turn into something poignant and more interesting at the end. (The voiceover as coda, by the way, was added for Code reasons.) And Billy Wilder (co-writing and directing) guides the ship with a light, skilled hand -- the scenes between Cooper’s Frank Flanagan and his hired band are particularly fun.
There’s a fatal flaw, though: While Hepburn has never been more luminous, Cooper is too old to be the leading man. Wilder knew this, using soft focus and dim lighting in an effort to be kind that just calls attention to the movie’s fatal flaw. Moreover, Flanagan’s neither particularly interesting nor pleasant, so you never believe Hepburn’s Ariane would actually be interested in him. (He’s rich, granted, but she doesn’t seem to care about that.)
Directors kept doing this to Audrey Hepburn in the 1950s: Three years earlier, Wilder stuck her with a half-rotted Humphrey Bogart in Sabrina; in 1957 she also had to put up with a mummified Fred Astaire in Funny Face. Beyond the fact that it’s creepy, it doesn’t work for those stories.
I’m going to look on the bright side: Hepburn deserves even more adulation than she gets, since she rises above her AARP romantic leads to carry all three pictures.
The 39 Steps (1935)
A clever early Hitchcock I found intriguing because you can see the visible language of film evolving before your eyes. Some scenes look utterly modern, with intriguing camera angles and blocking, but they’re right next to oddly static compositions, or scenes filled with cuts that cross the line for no apparent reason. But there’s also a justifiably famous transition shot from a cleaning woman’s horrified discovery to a train whistle, a tricky perspective change from inside a car, and some other nice surprises.
The movie is a prototype Hitchcock thriller, with a plot that carries you along provided you don’t ask too many questions. (Or any questions, really.) But the movie hits its stride surprisingly late, coming into focus once Robert Donat’s Richard Hannay winds up manacled to Madeleine Carroll’s Pamela. Hang around that long and you’ll be well entertained.
McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971)
This one made my list because it was an inspiration for Solo, a Star Wars spinoff movie I think deserved a better reception and suspect will be viewed more fondly in time. Yep, that’s Warren Beatty’s fur coat that Alden Ehrenreich wears, and the bar Beatty visits in the town of Presbyterian Church is a dead ringer for the one where Han and Lando Calrissian meet over cards.
So that was fun. As for the rest, after my usual post-movie reading, I get what Robert Altman was going for. This is an anti-Western that relentlessly inverts the genre’s tropes, with the climactic gunfight happening not in the center of town before all eyes, but scarcely noticed as the townspeople rush to put out a fire.
But I found that more interesting to read about than to watch. I was never invested in Beatty’s McCabe or Julie Christie’s Mrs. Miller, finding them less memorable than a young visitor who runs afoul of trouble (Keith Carradine) or the lead bounty hunter sent after McCabe (Hugh Millais, exuding genial menace).
Still, the movie has a powerful sense of place, I keep finding myself thinking about it, and lots of people whose opinions I respect consider it a classic. So perhaps I’ll revisit this one someday. But for now, my conclusion is that I’m missing whatever gene you need to appreciate chilly, airless Hollywood art-house movies of the 1970s -- a movement, ironically, that screeched to a halt when Jaws and Star Wars introduced the era of the summer blockbuster.

MONDAY, OCTOBER 20th, OF THIS YEAR
Peter sat impatiently in the back of Happy's limousine, tightly clutching the backpack Mr. Stark instructed him to bring. He hadn't given Peter any explanation for packing a bag, merely telling him to bring whatever he felt was necessary for an extended mission out of the city. Peter wasn't sure what that meant per se, so he might have packed a little more on the heavy side. He couldn't help it, he was excited.
It wasn't too long ago that Peter told Mr. Stark that he wished to lay low - continuing just to be your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man for a while. While Mr. Stark was happy to oblige to Peter's wishes, that by no means meant he was off the table team-wise. Things were reasonably silent from Mr. Stark after that, but it didn't last long. He never dreamed that Mr. Stark would be contacting him so soon - for his own personal assignment no less!
"So what's this mission about, Happy?" Peter happily piped from the back seat. Happy simply rolled his eyes, glancing at the boy through the rear view window.
"No clue, kid," he sighed, returning his gaze to the road, "I'm just a chauffeur after all."
"Aww, Happy. You're more than that!" Peter laughed, "C'mon, you're Mr. Stark's best friend. He must've told you something. Please, I'm dying here!" his constant pleas made Happy chuckle under his breath. He quickly hid his smile and sighed again as he pulled the car through the gates of the Compound.
"Really, kid. I don't know. If I did, I'd tell ya. But I don't. So stop begging." He brought the car to the front of the Facility, slowly bringing it to a halt at the base of the stairs.
"Well, thanks for the ride anyway, Happy." Peter could barely contain himself at this point, feeling as though he might literally jump from the car. He reached for the door to exit, only to realize it remained locked. Peter attempted to unlock the door himself but found the red button unable to be switched. He looked up, prepared to inform Happy of the malfunction - that is until he noticed Happy's finger pressed firmly against the 'lock' function. He turned to face the boy.
"Listen up," Happy removed his finger, instead using it to wave in Peter's face, "Just because this is your first official mission under the Avengers, don't let it get to your head. Take the utmost precaution and be careful. I don't plan on giving your Aunt any bad news while you're gone." The corners of Peter's mouth turned up into a toothy grin. Whether Happy wanted to admit it or not, he cared about Peter - and that made him feel good.
"Thanks, Happy. I will. I promise." and with a simple nod shared between the two, Peter finally opened his door, exiting the vehicle.
He looked at the entrance of the Facility, the stairway gently illuminated on this chilly October night. It didn't take long for Happy to drive away, leaving Peter alone at the base of the steps. On a night like this - with not a soul around - Peter found it hard not to be at least a little creeped out. Hero or not, Peter had a bad relationship with scary situations. Halloween wasn't exactly his favorite holiday, and even the mere thought about being alone in the dark gave him goosebumps. So without haste, he hurried up the concrete steps, through the swinging doors, and into the warm, comforting light of the Compound lobby.
Inside was surprisingly just as empty as it was outside. It was reasonably late after all, but Peter couldn't remember a time when the building seemed so quiet. Mr. Stark said to meet in his office. Lucky for him, he knew his way around by now and went straight for the elevator. The cheesy music that accompanied his journey upwards to Mr. Stark's office lightened the mood a bit. Peter didn't want to show it, but he was nervous. The call from Mr. Stark just seemed so out of the blue, and the lack of details regarding his mission made Peter more worried now than excited. He wondered where all that confidence he had in the car went. Peter wanted to show everyone that he was capable of anything - but now he was finding it difficult to assure himself of those claims. As the elevator reached the final stretch on its journey upward, Peter did his best to shake off these feelings.
With a gentle ding, the door opened into Mr. Starks office. Peter made his way into the room, still to this day mesmerized by its size. Finally, his eyes transfixed to the large glass windows ahead. There stood three men - Mr. Stark, Dr. Strange, and Mr. Wong. Peter didn't realize the other two men would be here, and while he usually enjoyed seeing familiar faces at the Compound, their presence made Peter worry just a bit more when it came to the details of his mission. He didn't have long to think about it, as the three soon took notice of him.

"Ah, kid! You're finally here." Mr. Stark waved Peter over to the windows. The other two men gave soft, almost nonexistent smiles as Peter slowly stepped towards them.
"Y-Yeah, Sorry it took so long. I wasn't really sure what to bring." Peter found his nerves rising to the surface as he stuttered. He tried to calm himself.
"No sweat, kid." Mr. Stark assured the boy, placing a firm hand on his shoulder. It wasn't much, but it was enough to silence the doubts in Peter's head - if only for a moment.
"You ready to get going?" Dr. Strange finally spoke.
"Whoa, Whoa, Whoa. Noone's told me where I'm going yet. What is this mission?" Peter sputtered out without thinking, his concerns now on full display. Wong looked to Mr. Stark with a raised eyebrow.
"You didn't inform him about his assignment?" Wong spoke with a tad bit of annoyance in his voice. Mr. Stark quietly chuckled and lightly pushed Peter towards the two.
"I felt you two would do a better job at explaining." With a final pat on the back, Mr. Stark left the windows, maneuvering his way to the other side of his office. Strange stepped closer to Peter, silently demanding his attention. Peter couldn't help but be at least a little intimidated by the man.
"Well, Peter. You're going to going on a little trip... out of state." Strange began.
"Out of state? Where exactly am I--" Peter tried to ask, but Wong was quick with a response.
"A town called Greendale," With a flick of his wrist, a sparkling image of a town shimmered into existence and floated before them. Peter was left breathless. He'd seen Strange and Wong showcase their magic from time to time, but it never ceased to amaze him.
"You will be going to into the town, undetected and undercover." Strange now took control of the astral image, zooming inward to a particular sign. It read 'Let Greendale cast a spell on you!' - the irony of seeing such a sign through magic made Peter chuckle to himself.
"We have reason to believe something powerful is residing in Greendale." Wong waved his hands and just like that the town flickered away into nothingness - snapping Peter out of his head.
"W-Wait... I don't understand," Peter turned to face the men, "If you guys know there's something wrong, can't you use your magic to just see what it is?"
"That's just it," Strange turned to his colleague, a twinge of concern in his eyes, "We can't."
"Our spells won't locate anything. We can sense there's a rise in power, but it's as if something is blocking us from the source," Wong turned away, looking out the window, "Such power is rather troubling, to say the least." Peter couldn't help but feel the two men felt defeated in a way. As powerful as they are - their magic couldn't do anything.
"That's where you come in, kid." Tony spoke from across the room, walking over with an envelope in his hand, "You're going to infiltrate the town, go to the school, speak to the townsfolk, and report anything suspicious back to headquarters."
"Suspicious?" The word worried Peter a bit.
"Relax. It could be anything," Strange placed a calming hand on Peter's shoulder, gently turning the boy to face him, "An individual coming into their powers, a weapon of some sort... or even a potential infinity stone. It's unlikely, but we don't know the location of all the stones just yet."
"Here," Now it was Mr. Stark who turned Peter to face him, albeit a little less gentle than Dr. Strange, "This is for you. It's cash - a lot of it. There's a card in there too. It should help with your food and housing during your stay."
"I-I mean--" Peter tried to get a word in, but Mr. Stark wasn't listening, placing the envelope into Peter's backpack.
"I've already signed all the paperwork - forged obviously - and tomorrow morning you're going to be attending your first day at Baxter High."
"I still have to go to school?!" Peter finally got his chance to speak. The three men quietly chuckled to themselves.
"Noone gossips quite like teenagers," Strange smirked as he stepped behind the boy, "Trust me, it's good for your cover." Without any further details on the subject, Strange stretched his hand outward over Peter's shoulder. His hand motioned in small circles as sparks materialized from the air. They formed a circle of light - and at its center was the sign he had seen earlier. This was his portal to Greendale - it was certainly faster than a car ride.

"First order of business is to find where you'll be staying," Tony stepped between Peter and the portal, "Find a hotel, get comfortable, and report in once you're situated."
"Yes, Mr. Stark," Peter put his worries aside, now standing tall with a bright smile, "I won't let you guys down."
"Good luck." the three men said in unison. Peter took a deep breath and without looking back stepped forward through the ring of light. The temperature immediately changed around him, the cold autumn air now enveloping him. Before he could turn around to say goodbye, he could feel the light from the portal fade away into the darkness of the night. He was alone now, and Peter couldn't help but find his nerves betraying him once more.
The sounds of the woods around him were so much different than that of the city. It was almost peaceful in a sense, but not quite enough to calm him just yet. He looked up; there it was - 'Let Greendale cast a spell on you!'. Beside the sign was a road, likely into town. With one final gulp, Peter wasted no time - beginning his journey down the road into unfamiliar territory.
