The scale of MXTX characters hand writing from Worst to Best
Hua Cheng: literally intelligible, those basically aren't even words any.
Wei wuxian: the equivalent of a sleep deprived adhd stem student notes right before an exam. Technically legible but only to him, people who know him really well.
Luo Binghe: it's good. Not outstanding but Nicely legible, pretty when it needs to be.
Shen Qingqiu: technically there's nothing wrong with his hand writing, but His writing is too modern for the Xianxia settings he's living in and although it's not too much of a problem it's definitely enough to make peoples eyebrow raise.
Xie Lian: stunningly beautiful calligraphy. Truly just art in written form.
Lan wangji: the most beautiful and technically perfect hand writing you have everything seen. Calligraphy teachers weap with joy when they see his writing.

My handwriting in five languages
English | Burmese | Korean | Chinese | Japanese
I don't have the most beautiful handwriting but I love writing on paper with a pen!! my fav is black in because I feel cooler. The sentences are from books I had around.
my fav handwriting is definitely my Burmese handwriting. Look at those round things go!!!
my favorite language to practice writing in is Chinese. The hanzi (or kanji/hanja) feels so nice. It's like meditation
my favorite language to actually write things in is Korean. Maybe because now I'm fluent in a language other than Burmese and English. While writing long essays in Korean, I can FEEL my brain unlocking things.
least favorite language to write in is japanese. My brain has to switch gears from simplified chinese characters to traditional chinese characters to japanese chinese characters. maybe it'll get easier if I get to like N1 but right now, it's ugh. I love hiragana but I'm going to have an enemies to lovers arc with katakana. I can feel it.

i was drawing dirk, thought a bit too hard about chinese dirk, went to the chinese wiki and the chinese translation of hs to pick out how they translated prince of heart (心靈之王子) and destroyer of souls (靈魂的摧毀者) and this happened. i think the words took me longer than the actual drawing

There was a post that crossed my dash about the character for dream meng/mung6 (don't know which drama) but some dude got in trouble for using 14 strokes instead of the 13 stroke version of the character. Which got me thinking... I'm pretty sure I learned the 14 stroke version where it looks like grasshopper antennae on top instead of a bar.
So I decided to look it up while using both version for today's learning/practice. Using both a watercolor brush and a fountain pen with mini-bent nib today.
Parts:
grass hair
4
a hat
the 'going down' part of sunset (夕陽)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Apparently it's once again down to regional differences. The tufts of hair was used in HK and Taiwan (probably old gen only now) and is the older traditional version. The one where the hair is a whole piece is used in like... China and Japan.
So this makes me wonder why that character in that drama (idk what drama) was penalized for writing the word using a character style that would have been period appropriate in a costume drama? The connected crown is newer. :O
And now with Simplied, they grew a forest instead of hair, threw away the hat and let the sun set. So imagery-wise I'm getting.... dream = sun setting as a forest grows darker and darker. I kinda like that.
Tumblr media
Bonus juk6gan2 肉緊 which I have been told is indeed outdated slang, so I'M BRINGING IT BACK. Cantonese for 'meat tight' = THE TENSION YOU FEEL WHEN YOU'RE DEALING WITH CUTE AGGRESSION.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, if you reverse the order to 緊 肉 then it means "tight muscles". Like you haven't stretched enough and things are stiff. I have no idea if this is how it's used in mandarin. Feel free to let me know. not used this way in mandarin
Question: What's the use difference when both 夕 (alone) and 夕陽 ? Since both mean sunset...? Answered!

Re-watching the donghua of Thousand Autumns brings back all the feels. I once draw them before referencing the English translation book cover so now I wanna try doodle the donghua’s version of Shen Qiao and Yan Wushi!

So! I wanted to see if i could write in Japanese in a gothic-calligraphy-like hand.
(forgive the orange highlighter, it was the only chisel-tip writing ustensil on the entire floor)
epic reading below:
originally, this seemed like a challenge, for a few reasons:
English is very simple, so you are able to embellish a lot. Japanese is not, so you can't really embellish/if you do, they could be confused for other strokes and therefore other kanji.
Japanese has plenty of diagonal strokes, while English does not. And with the technique used in this sort of calligraphy, you can't really make them look very interesting.
And above all, In the english logo of Attack on Titan, they use a really cool gothic-like font, so i was interested to see how they did the Japanese logo, but it wasnt similar at all (not very interesting in its own sense either). Which made it seem like it's just not possible. Which made it more of a challenge. (also note that i have never watched or read aot):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, Japanese and English are two entirely different languages. Even just written in the blandest, most boring font with a ballpoint pen, they give off completely different vibes, aesthetically.
Typical/Traditional calligraphy for each also give off different vibes, though there are similarities:

However, some fonts/lettering/calligraphy can look pretty similar when effort is put in:

So, i decided to finally try it out for real today and totally not avoid my English assignment rather than simply attempting to doodle a word here or there half-heartedly.
also, i did do some embellishments, which may make it hard to read if you actually know Japanese, but it does that in English too so lol. I did refrain from doing too many, though.
So, to compare the Japanese to the English in the gothic font side by side, it'd look like this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(i edited the colouring bc orange highlighter is just way to hard to read). Now, the Japanese is pretty unreadable compared to the English, but I figured that was in-part due to the English having space and lower+upper case, so i did another English version where everything is capitalized:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(i ran out of room and had to tape a second paper to it haha). But as you can see, pretty hard to read to (and it would be even harder without the spaces).
So Anyways, do you think the gothic Japanese gives off similar vibes to the English gothic?? how'd i do?
