I’m not even gonna try listing all of the features because there’s just so many and I’ve used it for many years now and on a daily basis. Not to mention it is constantly updated. In terms of features and overall quality, MDBG is the best in my opinion.

Please keep in mind that none of these dictionaries are perfect and language is constantly evolving, so new terms are not likely to be in any of these dictionaries.  there is not many moderators for these dictionaries so sometimes definitions and words won’t be entered in for weeks or even months.

Translating Kaeya’s Conversation with Adelinde at Dawn Winery in Hidden Strife

I’ve had this in my drafts for a while. Exactly what it says on the tin, it’s the hidden dialogue in Hidden… Strife… Wait a minute--

爱德琳：凯亚少…凯亚队长，你好啊。

爱德琳：今日突然来访，是有什么急事吗？

凯亚：艾德琳小姐，你的口气未免有些见外啊。

凯亚：骑士团又收到了「暗夜英雄」的目击报告了。虽说目击者并未看清疑似暗夜英雄的人往哪里去…

凯亚：但我总觉得，嫌疑人应该就在晨曦酒庄一带吧。

爱德琳：是吗？凯亚队长和暗夜英雄没有同时出现过，凯亚队长经常出现在晨曦酒庄，暗夜英雄也一样。

爱德琳：所以，凯亚队长就是暗夜英雄，我可以这么认为吗？

凯亚：哈哈哈，好有道理，没想到我就是大名鼎鼎的暗夜英雄啊！

My English Translation

Kaeya: The Knights have received another eyewitness account of the “Darknight Hero”. Although the witness didn't quite see where the suspected Darknight Hero was heading towards… 

Kaeya: Well, I’ve always had the feeling that the suspect should be in the Dawn Winery area.

Adelinde: Is that so? Captain Kaeya and the Darknight Hero never appear at the same time. And while Captain Kaeya often appears at the Dawn Winery, so does the Darknight Hero. 

Adelinde: So, can I assume that Captain Kaeya is the Darknight Hero in question?

Kaeya: Hahaha, such logic! So the famed Darknight Hero is me after all!

Adelinde: Apologies, Captain Kaeya, but the Dawn Winery is having a fire safety inspection today.

Translation Notes

Adelinde repeating “Captain Kaeya” and “Darknight Hero” multiple times 

“凯亚队长和暗夜英雄没有同时出现过，凯亚队长经常出现在晨曦酒庄，暗夜英雄也一样。所以，凯亚队长就是暗夜英雄，我可以这么认为吗？”

“Captain Kaeya and the Darknight Hero don’t appear at the same time. Captain Kaeya often appears at the Dawn Winery, and so does the Darknight Hero. So, Captain Kaeya is the Darknight Hero. Can I interpret it like this?”

(Unless Adelinde is trying to fix her mistake of accidentally calling him “Master Kaeya” by referring to him as “Captain Kaeya” excessively?)

不是吧 (búshìba / bu2shi4ba5)

Literally speaking it’s closer to an exasperated “No!” but it means something more like “Come on!” or “Come now!” the latter of which sounds a lot like something Kaeya would say.

警戒区 (jǐngjièqū / jing3jie4qu1)

警戒 is a verb that means to be on one’s guard or to prepare for emergencies but 区 means zone or area, so the word together means security zone.

高深难懂 (gāoshēn nándǒng / gao1shen1 nan2dong3)

Two words that both mean difficult to understand. People don’t usually say this and instead say 高深莫测, a proverb.

暗语 (ànyǔ / an4yu3)

Literally dark language. It means secret code.

那可真是白活了 (nà kě zhēn shì baí huó le / na4 ke3 zhen1 shi4 bai2 huo2 le5)

Literally Then that’s truly a life wasted. 白活 is used to mean someone has lived a life without meaning or happiness.

Alternatively it could also mean to work without getting paid, but that doesn’t seem to be the context here.

Translating Varka’s Comments on Il Capitano in His Letter

Small spoilers for the first quest of the “Of Ballads and Brews” event.

Hey, it’s a really quick translation that focuses specifically on Varka’s comments on “The Captain” Il Capitano in his letter that Mika read out. It’s really an amazing sight, seeing all these Knights gathered before the Acting Grand Master Jean. I love this shot! And I like how when Varka is bragging about his captains, we’re shown Kaeya specifically. (Our beloved) Kaeya must be truly powerful too. It’s heartwarming how much confidence Varka has in the Knights of Favonius captains.

Notes

Alright, this fluctuation in translation quality is typical of the official English translation. Something obvious is missed, a common simile is mistranslated, and a pun is not registered resulting in an awkward translation, although the basic content in the first two screenshots are well done.

In the first screenshot, Varka specifically says “these past two months” instead of “in the past couple of months” in the first four characters 这两个月. It’s not a shorthand. It’s impossible to miss. I don’t know how the official English translation managed to do so.

In the second screenshot, it’s written as one long sentence in Chinese, though it may be seen as a run-on sentence. The second sentence’s structure can be difficult to translate, but it’s possible to retain the same fluency in one English sentence with a couple of conjunctions instead of splitting up the sentence. This is just my personal translation style of matching with the original sentence structure as close as possible.

The first three characters 那家伙 is an informal way to refer to someone, typically a man. Instead of “the man” it’s better translated as “that guy”.

钢铁般的人 literally translates to “steel-like man” but when used as a simile, “man of steel” is a known English phrase for describing a very strong man. It fits Il Capitano since he is very powerful in physique and combat and he literally has a steel mask, so I’m not sure why the official English translation chose to say “hard as iron”. Dare I say, it even sounds unnecessarily suggestive.

In the third screenshot, Varka uses really casual language and thus the word order in 队长咱们骑士团有十个呢 is not textbook. The sentence translates to “And us Knights have ten of ‘em captains” though literally speaking the word order is more so “Captains us Knights have ten.”

This is a pun since in the text, 队长 is mentioned twice, first referring to the Fatui Harbinger “The Captain” and then the ten captains of the Knights of Favonius. Varka is basically saying that no matter how powerful The Captain (Il Capitano) is, he is only one “captain”, and in terms of “captains”, the Knights of Favonius has ten, so the Knights outnumber him in that sense. From the previous section though, it’s obvious Varka knows the extent of Il Capitano’s power and abilities as a Harbinger. However, Varka is also one of the most powerful people in Mondstadt, so he has extreme confidence in his Knights while also joking around to lighten the mood and not make the Knights in Mondstadt worry about Il Capitano.

Unfortunately, this joke about “And us Knights have ten of ‘em captains” was completely missed in the official English translation. A shame, really, that Varka’s extreme confidence in the Knights’ captains is not brought across. The official English translation of “There are ten captains in the Knights of Favonius but only one Grand Master” sounds unnecessary and awkward because it’s not registered as a joke thus it’s an important line wasted.

Casual word order is really difficult to understand if you’ve only been taught textbook order…On one hand, that’s understandable since informal Chinese word order can be really fluid, on the other hand, this only proves even further the basic level of the official English translation.

Conclusion

In the end, some important parts were completely missed, and some other parts were not very accurate. The official English translation’s quality really fluctuates a lot… Not unlike the winds of Mondstadt, hahaha! And there I thought the notes would be short. Anyway, thank you so much for reading up ‘till this point! It’s pretty fun to see what the Knights of Favonius Grand Master thinks of The Captain of the Fatui Harbingers.

P.S.: I wrote this in one sitting and severely underestimated how long it takes to explain the nuances, haha!
