I don't want to watch Fives and Tup die.
I don't want to watch Rex watch Fives die in his arms.
I don't want to watch Fox shoot Fives.
Why must The Clone Wars just be pain?

Dying Isn't Very Regulation: Chapter 15
Tumblr media
Ever trauma so hard that like, 20 people around you need brain surgery to recover from it? No? Just Crosshair? Yeah, he feels real great about that.
(A self-indulgent 5 9 16! chapter fic inspired by Snapback by @toomanyteefs with Fives and Ninety-Nine, because I have emotions about this, they deserves the world, and the narrative ran away with me!)
“I still don’t get it!” Commander Thorn’s words drifted back from the cockpit to where Crosshair was sitting, balled up in a corner of the stupid, too small, too quiet Mandalorian ship. “If we really have a chip that makes us follow these orders how come I wasn’t affected like my men?
“Because you weren’t given the order,” Tech said patiently. “It was designed to be passed down the line, from commanding officers down to their men. You never received the order from a superior, but when you repeated what Crosshair said, it was apparently enough to trigger your men… And one of ours,” He added, a little quieter, but not so quiet Crosshair didn’t catch the bitterness in his tone.
He tried to make himself smaller, pressing his back into the cold walls of the ship in his seat as nausea rolled over him. He had done that. He activated the order, it might have been Thorns words but Crosshair had been the one to put them in his mouth. It was his fault, no matter how reluctant the others were to say so. He knew they blamed him. They could hardly meet his eyes after what he did, after the things he said to Ninety-Nine, and the consequences-
“YOU!” Came a shout from the hold, along with a thrashing sound. “Conspiring with the enemy makes you a-”
The buzz of a stunner made the protest fall silent and Crosshair squeezed his eyes shut, trying to block it out. Ninety-Nine was back there with the rest of the Corries. None of them would have ever had to understand, and now they did. Was that somehow what he wanted? That was exactly what he had an entire kriffing meltdown over, wasn’t it? Ninety-Nine never had to comply with vile orders against his will, with or without the chip! He never had his body and mind ripped away from his control, never heard voices compelling him to do terrible things… Until now. The image of his face, twisted and contorted as he wrestled painfully for control, would be seared into Crosshairs mind for a long time, nevermind the feeling of a blaster in his gut or the sound of Ninety-Nine’s gut-curling scream as he somehow found the strength Crosshair never could to hold back that killing blow.

“Fox?”
Fox’s neck was ridged, entire body tight as he moved his head again strangely, jerkily, as if he were trying to nod his head but wasn’t sure how. Something settled in the pit of Cody’s stomach alongside his rage, something… wrong. “Fox.”
“‘M… f’ne…. ‘M ok…” The words were slurred out behind clenched teeth, low and hoarse as if Fox were speaking from his guts. The man himself looked far away, face becoming redder by the second.
Cody took a step back. Still keyed up, he had no idea what to do next, only that something was utterly, terribly, wrong.
“Fox, you look-”
Cody was given no time to react and catch his batchmate as Fox tipped backwards. His head slammed into the corner of the cabinet in the corner as he did so, dropping to the floor like a ton of durasteel.
Fox hit the floor hard, head bouncing on the worn-down carpet.
Cody started around the desk quickly and made to reach out to Fox, to help him to sit up and to check the back of his head, anger forgotten. But before he could so much as open his mouth, Fox’s whole body began to jerk and spasm.
His arms and legs shook hard, uncontrollably, and hit anything in their path. It was all Cody could do to avoid one of Fox’s boots as it came close to kicking him in the shin. Wide eyes travelled up Fox’s spasming, writhing form to his face which had turned an even deeper shade of red, jaw clenched tightly shut and eyes rolling back into his head wildly.
Cody’s anger flooded into panic between one heartbeat and the next. This was a seizure, he realised. He’d heard about them in his medical training, as all clones had, but never seen one up close. Cody didn’t know much about how to help his batchmate, but he remembered that touching and trying to hold him down usually did more harm than good. The only thing he could do was watch helplessly as Fox thrashed about, and move any potentially hazardous objects out of the paths of his flailing limbs.
Shoving Fox’s desk chair well out of reach, Cody fell to his knees by his side. His hands hovered outwards as he debated rolling Fox into the recovery position, limbs shaking almost as much as his batchmate’s, but ultimately decided against it. Unless Cody pinned him down, Fox would roll right onto his back again.
The colour of his face had turned darker, as if Fox were suffocating. His expression was pinched tight and agonised.
There was only one thing for it.
“Fuck, just hold on - I’m gonna get help.”

The Sixty-Sixth Sense
Fives died in the chip conspiracy. So Echo wakes up after the Techno Union missing half his body and his partner.
At least until he realises he can see and speak to ghosts!
To find the evidence to reveal the chip conspiracy once and for all, Echo must team up with the Bad Batch. But he doesn't expect to find love, or a new place for himself along the way.
This is my submission for Clone Bang 2023- a fic I've been working on for months now, and I'm sooo excited to finally be posting it. Please mind the tags below the cut.
With thanks to @trudemaethien (my superb beta), and @duck-that-draws (my incredible artist who created this fabulous first piece of art below with two more to come!) as well as @clonebang mods for organising this celebration of the clones!

“Execute Order 66.”
“Yes, Lord Sidious.”
Rex had turned on his heels, blasters pointing at you and Ahsoka. Everything moved so fast, you almost didn’t have time to process what was happening: the clones, including Rex, had turned on you… They had turned on the Jedi. You and Ahsoka barely escaped the encounter and were now on the run from all the clones on the Jedi Cruiser.
You reached the doors when Ahsoka turned to you, determination in her eyes. “I’ll get Maul,” she said, opening the doors.
“What for?” You hissed.
“Diversion,” she replied quickly as the door opened. “You find out everything you can about arc trooper Fives. There’s got to be something there that can help us explain what the hell is going on here!”
You nodded and turned to face the other way, muttering a “good luck,” under your breath before running in the opposite direction. You had no idea where you were going, where your feet were taking you, but you knew you had to find out some information on Fives. Yours and Ahsoka’s lives depended on it. You reached a few droids and quickly turned them on, hushing them as they sprung to life. “Shh, guys, shh. I need your help,” you whispered softly to the droids. They bumbled in response. “I need you to find out anything you can on arc trooper Fives. Please, it’s an emergency. The clones have turned against the Jedi and we don’t know why!”
The droids bumbled again and quickly got to work, pulling up a report filed by Rex himself. In the report, you had learned that Fives was convinced of a conspiracy against the Jedi: an inhibitor chip placed in all the clones to make them do whatever they wanted, including executing the Jedi. Your eyes widened in shock as you listened to Rex’s report. That was it, an inhibitor chip. You turned around and sighed, a heavy weight on your shoulders. It was then that the doors behind you slid open, revealing Rex. His hand went straight to his blasters when he saw you, and yours straight for your lightsaber in an attempt to protect yourself: but you were too late. Everything went black.
When you woke up, you were in a holding cell with your hands tied uncomfortably behind your back. Your eyes immediately shot up when you heard a chuckle come from inside the room with you. It was Rex. “I wouldn’t do that if I were you sweetheart,” he said, his voice low under his helmet.
“Rex,” you whispered, breathing heavily as you struggled against your restraints.
“Stop that. You can’t escape from me,” Rex growled. “I should execute you right here and now, traitor.”
“Rex, this isn’t you,” you said as tears formed in your eyes. “You’re being controlled. Fives was right!”
“Shut up,” he snapped as he took off his helmet. He pulled his blaster out of his holsters and pressed it against your temple, his finger stuttering on the trigger. “I’ve always wanted to see you on your knees for me, Jedi.”
“Rex-”
“I said shut up!” he barked at you. Rex slowly removed his cod-piece and your eyes widened as he took his cock out of his blacks, pumping it slowly. His golden eyes looked down on you. Your heart was beating in your chest as he grabbed your hair with his free hand and forced you to look up at him, cock dangerously close to your face. “Suck it,” he demanded, the blaster still pressed firmly against your temple. “Suck it or I’ll shoot you right here.” You looked up at him through your lashes as tears gathered in your lower lash line. You slowly took his cock into your mouth and he immediately let out a groan. You hollowed your cheeks as you began to suck slowly, eyes never leaving his. Rex’s face contorted into one of pure pleasure as you swirled your tongue around his tip, lapping him up as if your life depended on it, mainly because it did. “You look so good with your mouth full of my cock,” Rex growled, his hips thrusting slightly into your face. You mumbled something around his length forcing him to press the blaster closer to your temple, knocking your head slightly sideways, but never once did you stop sucking. You stayed like that for a few minutes, a dull ache appearing in your jaw as Rex continued to fuck your face. His pace was slow, as if he was savouring the moment and suddenly he pulled you off of his cock with a slight pop. “Stand up,” he commanded. You did as you were told when suddenly he barked another order at you. “Face the wall.” You complied, facing the wall with a shudder. Rex dropped his blaster to his side for a moment as he yanked down your pants and underwear, leaving your bottom half completely bare to him. He pried open your legs with his foot and kissed up your neck. “Wanted to do this for so long,” he admitted breathily against your soft flesh. For a second, you swore you caught a glimpse of the ‘old’ Rex, a man no longer controlled by an inhibitor chip. But that Rex disappeared when he pressed the blaster back to your temple.
“Rex,” you whimpered, feeling his cock slip against your folds. You shouldn’t be getting turned on by this, yet here you were, cunt clenching around nothing as Rex continued to stroke himself against your entrance. “This isn’t you.” Rex stopped his movements for a second as he processed your words, but then without warning, plunged his cock straight into your core. A loud moan escaped your lips as Rex immediately began to thrust his hips against yours roughly, not giving you a moment to adjust to his length. “Rex,” you whined.
“I thought I told you to shut up,” he grumbled as his free hand grasped your hips tightly, angling you in a way that had him hitting that spot deep inside of you already.
“Feels so good Rex, kriff, don’t stop!” You cried out as obscene squelching sounds filled the room. Rex happily obliged, never faltering his movements as his blaster pressed further into your temple, his finger resting on the trigger. One wrong move and you were dead, you knew that, but the pleasure was too good for you to even think about it. “Rex - ah - my clit, please. I need to cum!”
Rex didn’t say a word, just grunted into your neck as his spare hand dropped from your hip and circled around your waist, fingers resting on your swollen nub. His fingers started moving expertly on your clit, dancing delicious little circles around it. Electricity shot up your body and soon you were twitching and clenching around him, cumming over his cock without warning. Rex let out a loud moan as your walls fluttered around him and his movements sped up, the primal need to fill you up completely taking control of him. He dropped his blaster onto the floor and grasped your hips desperately with both hands, pounding into you as hard and as fast as he could. “Fuck, I’m gonna fill your pretty fucking cunt right here, right now,” he growled into your ear, his movements never stopping. His hips began to stutter as thick ropes of cum spit out of his tip, filling you completely to the brim. Rex halted his movements and pulled out of you, admiring the way his cum dribbled down your thigh as you shivered uncomfortably. Rex pulled up your underwear and pants, and was about to open his mouth to speak when suddenly the doors opened, causing him to spin around on his heels to be met with a blaster shot set to stun. It was Ahsoka.
“Y/N!” She yelled, running to your side. “Are you okay?”
“I’m fine,” you whispered quietly, looking at Rex lying on the floor unconscious. “I don’t think I would have been if you hadn't shown up though.”
“Let’s not think about that,” she said with a smile, unclasping the restraints that held your hands behind your back. “Did you find out anything about Fives?”
You nodded. “There’s a chip inside the clones making them do this. It’s not their fault Ahsoka, they can’t help it. We need to get Rex to the medical bay, maybe we can help him!”
Ahsoka nodded and helped you carry Rex discreetly to the medical facility. The procedure didn’t take long and after a matter of minutes, Rex was awake. He sat up off the table grasping the side of his head as he groaned. Ahsoka was the first to sit up and greet him cautiously. “Rex… Are you okay?”
“Yeah… Yeah kid, I’m okay,” he whispered. He was about to apologise for trying to kill her, but then you stepped into view with tears in your eyes. You wrapped your arms around Rex protectively and pressed a kiss to his cheek softly.
“Rex, I’m so glad you’re back,” you cried, arms tightening around him.
“Y/N,” he whispered softly, tears filling his own eyes as his mind thought back to what he did. “I’m so sorry. I couldn’t stop it, I tried, I really did.”
“It’s okay Rex,” you whispered back. “I know you couldn’t stop it. But, if all clones have been ordered to execute the Jedi… Why didn’t you execute me?”
Rex thought for a moment. He knew why, he was in love with you. Maybe that played a big part as to why he didn’t execute you, but he couldn’t be certain. “I… I don’t know.”
“It doesn’t matter about that right now. We have to get out of here,” Ahsoka sighed as she looked around the medical room. You pulled away from the hug with Rex and nodded as you looked into his eyes. There were no words there, but you understood. When this was all over, when you got out of here, you were both going to confess your feelings for each other and smash your lips together. You swore you would.

Luz Noceda, Belos’s Guide to the Modern Day
What if Luz’s offer to Belos wasn’t a ploy to brand him with a sigil, but instead a desperate attempt to save her friends?
When the rest of the Hexsquad (and King) arrive, they’re shocked, but Belos uses the fact that Hunter only has so long (because he has a sigil) as a bargaining chip, and everyone goes through the portal door with Belos. Afterwards he keeps Luz to serve his hero complex and keeps everyone else as proof of the demon realm’s existence. They all live in the shack (he locks them in their rooms every night), Luz has to guide him through being in the modern day.
(Random but important detail: when Luz makes Belos mad she is not directly punished, rather she’s given a choice between punishing or Belos punishing Amity twice as hard)
(Another random detail: Eda and the owl beast start to keep each other company due to being very lonely after the day of unity (most of the Boiling Isles’ population died on the day of unity))
(Yet another detail: Belos doesn’t see modern technology as evil or weird, but rather as an example of human ingenuity)
Belos eventually tells his version of the story in front of the Wittebane statues. He lies a lot (obviously) such as saying that Hunter is the son of Evelyn and Caleb and he claims Evelyn committed date r*** before she murdered Caleb (he also blames all of Hunter’s trauma responses on Evelyn’s actions instead of his own). Jacob Hopkins records Belos’s speeches and puts it on his conspiracy blog. Soon Belos decides to let Jacob record him directly (so Belos doesn’t have to be at risk of someone who knows Luz stepping in). Eventually Jacob decides to interview the witches, demon (everyone makes very sure to not let Belos know King is a titan) and “Corrupted by witches” human. Luz tries to get secret codes out by saying things in Tumblr slang and Spanish. Jacob gets worried when Luz describes Belos’s treatment of them in a way that involves the phrase “Horse Plinko” (Jacob knows Tumblr slang, and yes he gets a redemption arc)
(Also Belos might run for mayor of Gravesfield.)
More to be added.

Sitting here thinking about an AU where Tup survives his chip removal, only for all the damage the rotting chip caused on his frontal lobe to leave lasting effects that make the outcome so much worse.
The thought of Tup finally being coherent and aware of his surroundings but being bulldozed by incredibly unpredictable mood swings and reduced motor control, is an absolute tragedy in the context that he'd be accompanying Fives for the rest of the Conspiracy Arc storyline and still not being effective proof that the chip doesn't do what the Kaminoans says it does.
Can you imagine the frustration and terror of Fives desperately trying to explain himself only to have Tup react wrongly in front of Rex and Anakin without meaning to, and just painting the picture of "Yep the Kaminoans are right and these two are acting wrong without their chips. They need to be apprehended immediately to prevent this from spreading out of control"?
Maybe Fives manages to get them away when he sees how much of a hopeless endeavor this is. Maybe he decided a tactical retreat is the best thing he can do until he has more evidence and Tup recovers enough to have some semblance of control over his new limitations.
Maybe Fives gets shot down again and Tup is carted away to be vivisected in the name of finding a "cure for the chip destroying virus" and is never seen again. Maybe he ends up in Dr Hemlock's possession and is kept as a case study for how well clone brains recover from brain damage.
Whatever the case, Tup surviving the chip removal can be a double edged sword of tragedy if you really think about just how quickly he deteriorated... There was bound to be damage left if he had survived.

Force-blocking cuffs this, Force-Suppressant drug that; I'm pretty sure ray shields canonly prevent a Jedi from using the Force outside them. Obi-wan was stuck in one in Attack of the Clones, Anakin was stuck in one at the end of the Chip Conspiracy arc, and they both got stuck in one at the beginning of Revenge of the Sith. None of them waved their hands and broke the emitter, so either ray shields make Jedi silly or they do canonly block the use of the Force outside of them.

I stayed up late last night finishing the Pluto anime (I watched the English dub; I am planning on rewatching it in Japanese and the German dub eventually) and now I am putting down my thoughts after having slept on them.
Urasawa’s Pluto is one of my favorite manga (and comics) of all time, so I was very invested at the prospect of it getting an anime adaption (regardless of the fact that I expected I would end up, and still do, preferring the manga as the best way to experience the story). Anyways, overall, the Pluto anime is a great anime and a good adaption. The animation was very good, though I agree with the common criticisms that parts of it could have had better compositing. I do have a few criticisms of it as an adaptation though, critiques that go beyond the standard practice of shortening, slightly modifying, and cutting of (less plot-essential) dialogue and scenes that come when an anime adapts a manga (especially text and plot dense ones). I essentially have three major/not-insignificant criticisms of how the story got adapted (though I am quite aware that the cause of these shortcomings may be more due to the anime production just not having the time and/or resources to do so, than being deliberate creative choices).
My first criticism is the fact that in the manga Gesicht and Brau-1589 did end up exchanging memory chips (this happens at the end of volume 2 in the manga, which is roughly analogous to what episodes 2 and/or 3 of the anime adapted). Cutting that plot point from the anime is a significant story loss IMO as it was an essential step in Gesicht’s character arc, specifically him slowly realizing that parts of his memory were erased. It also diminishes the effectiveness of Brau-1589’s character as not only does it further explain and justify why Brau considered himself and Gesicht to be two of a kind (i.e., Brau was able to notice and discern Gesicht’s erased memories) it also removes narrative parallel/“rhyming” of how Atom had previously read Gesicht’s memory chip and is implied to have picked-up on the same erased memories as well. Also not getting to hear Brau-1589 do the haunting line of "500 Zeus a body" voiced-acted is a crying shame.
Secondly, the choice to cut out the various scenes Dr. Roosevelt, the immobile super-computer A.I., and the President of the not!USA, from the first half of the story was a mistake. In the manga, by volume 2, the audience is supposed to be explicitly clued-in to the fact that Dr. Roosevelt and the President are directly involved the serial murder conspiracy (with the how and why still being unknown). Not having this context established before the second half of the story in the anime I would imagine makes the later scenes of Dr. Roosevelt and the President that do get adapted much more confusing and random for an anime-only watcher. It also diminishes the greater connective and overarching themes of the narrative, particularly the ones critical of the USA and Neo-imperialism (which I cynically wonder if that was one of the reasons said scenes were cut). Excising the earlier Dr. Roosevelt scenes and references to it, as well as the parallels with Brau-1589 (and the theme of robots feeling hatred and other extreme emotions), brings down the quality of the character and thematic writing in general as well.
And finally, a few adaptation choices done in the final eighth episode, I feel brought down the quality of the climax. Beginning with the least significant one, but still important IMO, was the cutting of Doctor Tenma and Professor Hoffman’s scene at Gesicht’s grave. Besides it further elucidating the themes of the narrative, it’s also just a loss in terms of giving a bookend to Hoffman’s role in the narrative and his relationship with Gesicht. Next, is the anime’s decision to make Bora completely non-verbal when Atom and Pluto confront him during the climax. In the manga, the intelligence of Goji/“Abullah” was still present, which not only made the climax more emotionally engaging, but it also specifically made Pluto/Sahad coming to terms with the ghost of his father much more effective as well. Lastly, and my biggest issue with how episode 8 adapted volume 8, was the choice to have Atom remembering Gesicht’s final words and the flashback that reveals how Gesicht found the robot child he and his wife adopted, occur in the middle of the scene where Professor Ochanomizu witnesses Atom picking up a snail and showing how he still has his humanity intact after being revived in the way that he was. In the manga said scenes occurred right before Atom is about to deliver a killing blow to Pluto (and are subsequently intercut with the remainder of the climax). The way the anime rearranges the contents of volume 8 in episode 8 really messes up the flow, particularly the emotional flow, of the story’s climax and makes it less engaging and effective as a concluding experience.
Anyways, despite those three major areas I took issue with, I still really enjoyed the Pluto anime and consider it to be a great work overall. Though I still recommend the manga as the best and proper way to experience the story.

Side Order Mechanics Speculation
Or: These mechanics make no fucking sense under scrutiny what the fuck is going on.
Tumblr media
So, I've been looking over the palette screen, and trying to identify what certain aspects could mean. Up above is my conspiracy corkboard thing, but I'll go into detail below.
So, first of all, it's noteworthy that the design of a chip (including the pattern of it) responds to its "type." Right now we know of six different types: Power (red), Support (purple), Range (orange) and Mobility (blue) are all outlined in this screen, and the floor select shows that green seems to correspond with Drone features.
Tumblr media
That leaves yellow, which I assume is for Miscellaneous upgrades that don't fall under another category. The "Common Tones" part shows a smaller icon for the Support category, but it also has the yellow color chip class next to it:
Tumblr media
Now, labelling this as Miscellaneous is ultimately a guess due to the question mark implying that it's, well, random. However, the motion lines to the top left complicate this a good bit and mean that it could be something else, too. Maybe this has to do with increasing the drop rate of certain things (it bears some semblance to the Grizzco capsules, for example), or maybe it lets you change your sub weapon (representing a throwing arc for the bombs). Though given that's all not quite conclusive, I'm ultimately sticking with "Miscellaneous." As for "Common Tones," I believe this is a setting either belonging to a given character's Palette or something you can customize yourself entirely that makes certain types of chips more common. The bigger one is boosted by a lot, the other by not so much. This lets you aim for certain builds even from the start of a given run.
This is all pretty clear stuff so far, but I'll go into a lot more detail on my observations below, including the fact that the footage shown makes no fucking sense under scrutiny.
Tumblr media
Now, as for the color chips on the palette themselves. There's 4 rows of 9 spaces each for a total of up to 36 chips, with the player having collected 20 chips so far at the point of going into Floor 16 (sort of, it gets a bit complicated. I'll get to that later.) You can see that their color corresponds with their category, but beyond that there's subtle differences in hue, too. The orange color chip on the far left has a redder hue than the other Power-type color chips, and the Drone-type color chips also differ between being more green-ish or blue-ish. Notably, not all different chips also have different hues. The glowing chips on this screen are the "Ink Damage"-type chips, and there's three of them. The two red chips on the right side, then, must be Splash Damage (because there's two of them, and Splash Damage has gotten two upgrades), so the leftmost red chip is Main Firing Rate. And oddly Main Firing Rate has a different hue, but Ink Damage and Splash Damage share a color.
Tumblr media
The other ones that openly appear are pretty clear: The two purples are Ink Saver Main, the two oranges are Splash Radius, and then Mobility gets a bit odd. We know that one of the blues here is Swim Speed Up, and we know from the Floor Select screen that Run Speed Up uses the same hue of blue. So one of the four blues here is Swim Speed Up, the others are Run Speed. Probably. There's some weirdness I'll get to.
The ones that aren't directly named are a bit more of a mystery. The two green ones at the top left are Drone Splat Bomb most likely, because we saw that Drone Splat Bomb uses the same hue in the Floor Select and that screen showed us already having some Drone Splat Bomb points. The other Drone chips have a different hue, but the same pattern makes it clear it's still a Drone update of some sort. Maybe it increases the Drone's laser damage? While there might be other types of bombs you could unlock for the Drone (such as Burst Bombs or Suction Bombs), I don't believe that's what this one is, because the top right only shows the Drone as being able to use Splat Bombs. We also see the Drone both function as a constant Sprinkler in the trailer, as well as it throwing Burst Bombs. The latter part only appears on two frames of the trailer:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While at first it might seem like it's the player throwing the Burst Bomb, the trajectory and lack of animation on Agent 8 makes it clear that it's the Drone's doing.
And the two yellows are Misc. No clue what those could be.
Also, the left side menu shows how much you can upgrade each chip. Most go up to five, but Ink Damage and Splash Damage each go up to 9, with a big dot in the middle at 5. Is that just there for visual clarity, or does it signify a milestone at some point? Maybe that's how you get the "upgraded-looking" Dualies seen in a few shots, with the wireframes around them? It's also a bit odd that they both go so high even with only 36 total slots, but I assume that's for supporting very specialized builds.
Tumblr media
With that out of the way, let's talk about the top right side of the screen. It displays "Pearl's Palette," shows the main/sub/special you have, and the Drone's sub, as well as the highest floor you've gotten to (or cleared?) yet. Below that is the palette, with a little drawing of Pearl on it.
Tumblr media
My assumption is that as you progress through the game, you'll unlock other characters' palettes beyond Pearl. There's a few reasons for this: for one thing, calling it "Pearl's Palette" in particular is a bit odd. While Acht does address Pearl when she mentions putting chips into the Palette, which seems to imply the Palette is connected to the Drone in some way, the image of Pearl here is her real look, with the shades of the Damp Socks outfit.
Tumblr media
This is in contrast to the menu icon to get here, which shows the Pearl Drone. Clearly there's a distinction being made between the Palette menu, connected to the Drone, and Pearl's Palette, connected to real Pearl. This is also seen with the little icon of her on the Palette itself, highlighted in pink.
My conclusion is that there'll be different characters' Palettes. The pink Pearl icon on the right seems like the kind of thing that only exists to show off a character that can change. These Palettes will be the equivalent to characters in Isaac or the weapons in Hades: they offer different playstyles and increase replayability. I believe the weapon/sub/special loadout will be tied to the character Palette, too, with the Common Tones likely being customizable by the player regardless. I say this because Dualies/Curling/Reefslider also feels like a very "Pearl" loadout, given we know that Pearl plays Dualies, and Curling Bombs and Reefslider both encourage getting into people's faces.
Though I have to preemptively admit that Subs and Specials might not be locked to the Palette and can be freely customized. There's a shot in the trailer showing Eight with the dualies and a Sub line of about 30%, while in-game Curling Bomb costs at least ~45%, even with max investment of Ink Saver Sub. It's still possible that the upgrades to Ink Saver Sub in this mode are more potent than in multiplayer, however: Run Speed Up can get you at most ~145% of the default with a pure investment in multiplayer, but the upgrade shows that even just 3/5 upgrades of Run Speed Up get you to 140%, with two getting you to 131%. So it's not impossible that some investments of Ink Saver Sub could get Curling Bombs down to 30%, especially given that Eight is also dealing twice as much damage as in the very first scenes (which are likely without any color chips), so this scene seems to be pretty far into a run. Plus, while abilities in multiplayer have diminishing returns for balance reasons, for a singleplayer roguelike it makes sense to allow specialization and upgrading to a more extreme degree to make players really feel that they're getting stronger. Return of the Mammalians already had you being able to spam Splat Bombs when fully upgraded far beyond what Ink Saver Sub could accomplish.
Tumblr media
There might also be a Marina Palette that has a Brella, or a Callie one with a Roller, etc. etc. I also believe that the Palette might come preloaded with some color chips in future runs (or as an unlock), too, maybe. The first two chips in particular being the Drone Splat Bomb ones really makes me think that, because for a Pearl-themed loadout, starting out with strengthening the Pearl Drone makes a lot of sense.
Now, the number of chips. There's twenty chips visible in the UI, even though the player has only cleared fifteen floors at this point, which seems at odds with what seems to be one color chip per floor. I assume those are from a mix of potential starting chips and some form of shop inbetween floors. We see that you have a currency, and harder challenges give you more currency than easier ones, but nothing to spend it on yet. Given that it doesn't look like harder challenges reward inherently better chips, it's likely that there'll be a shop of some sort that'll regularly come up where you can exchange currency for some chips to let you get ahead of the curve.
Now for the weirdness.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
These are the descriptions for the individual upgrades. Splash Damage has 160% at 2/9 upgrades and 190% at 3/9, which seems to imply each level adds 30% to the damage. While this might diminish at some point, it certainly seems to go high up. At 5/9 you've already far surpassed 200%, and it likely goes up to 300% at least.
Next up is Run Speed up. I already mentioned that this goes up quite high, though this menu is showing diminishing returns: 131% at 2/5 and 140% at 3/5, with 0/5 at 100% and 1/5 likely around 120%. Either way, the step from 2 -> 3 is seemingly a good bit lower than previous ones. It's possible it tops out at 150% for a nice even number, but it also doesn't seem like investing two full chips just for that extra 10% is worth it, so it might go up to 160% maybe.
And lastly is Drone Splat Bomb. This shows a p cost, which is interesting. The Drone certainly doesn't seem to be using the player's bomb controls, because we see it firing bombs automatically while the player is shooting or doing other things. But it also can't be on the R Stick Press like a Special because the player already has a Special to use. My assumption is that the Drone will automatically toss a bomb once the player has painted the given amount of turf during a fight, which works with the general makeup of the Drone as more of a passive support. Level 2/5 for this is 180p and 3/5 is 160p, so it likely starts at 220p and goes down by 20p each step.
Here's where the weirdness start. We have the amount the chips upgrade the stats here, and we obviously know how many chips of each kind we already have. Given that we're being asked to upgrade each chip from 2 to 3, it goes to reason that we already have two of each type and adding a third, right?
Tumblr media
It tracks for Splash Damage and Drone Splat Bombs, but earlier I established that three of the blue chips were Run Speed Up while one was Swim Speed Up. Which at first seems to imply that there's a third type of blue Mobility chip, perhaps Intensify Action.
However, here's where it gets weirder. From this menu, from this state of the menu, we see the player select the Run Speed chip and insert it as their third Run Speed chip. So as the chip is inserted, the Palette should look like this afterwards:
Tumblr media
However, as the player confirms to take Run Speed Up, we see the Palette go from this...
Tumblr media
To this...
Tumblr media
Which makes no sense. The last chip in the Palette menu suddenly disappears and is placed again as the Run Speed Up chip for the Floor is placed. Instead of placing a new chip, the animation shows the placing of the last chip that was already in the Palette.
My first instinct was, "Oh, the Palette in the menu was showing what the Palette would look like if you picked the chip you were hovering over." However, that can't be it, because the Palette menu we saw was opened while the player was hovering over the first chip, the Splash Damage one.
So, option A is that this is all a bit of jankiness because this is prerelease footage. They probably hardcoded a Palette for this, and accidentally used the graphic for the Palette *after* getting Run Speed Up rather than the one before it, and the Palette in the menu should've actually looked like this all along:
Tumblr media
This would also explain the contradiction with the "Why does it show going from 2 to 3 Run Speed when we already have 3 Run Speed," because now the Palette only has 2 Run Speed Up chips and everything works out.
There's one other option that has the same functional outcome but a different explanation. It looks like there's some way to go back to, or maybe look at, previous floors:
Tumblr media
It's unclear what exactly this entails. Maybe it simply lets you look back at your run's history (though labelling that option like that is a bit weird), or maybe it lets you replay the last floor if you were unhappy with your performance on it. If the latter case is true, maybe what's happening is that the player already beat 16F with the Run Speed Up chunk, then they went back to do 16F again with the same selection. Potentially to get footage, maybe they were testing this feature at the time, I dunno. And going back would also mean giving back the reward you got (i.e. the Run Speed Up chip in this case). So maybe they went back to 16F after already having beaten it, and while the rest of the game registered that they should take away the Run Speed Up chip, the Palette display in particular hasn't implemented that part yet or something. I dunno.
Either way, this was everything I could think about for the mechanics at hand here. There also seem to be different types of levels, denoted by the icons to the left of the Floor indicators:
Tumblr media
Top one is likely the type of mission we've seen all over the trailer, where there's the fish skeleton enemies coming out of the black orbs and you need to take out the orbs as they spawn in or something. Though it's notably that the objects around the orb here don't really look like those fish enemies. The second mode has something to do with Splat Zones, maybe reusing some of the multiplayer maps and having you defend and/or take a Zone. The last icon is a complete mystery to me. Due to the arrangement of blocks my first guess is "platforming challenge" but honestly I have no clue.
Anyway, that's the post! Congrats for making it here! My head feels heavy now.

Summary
Force Osik can make things difficult and decidedly strange. Sith versions of Cody, Fox, Thorn, Thire, and Stone get switched with the bodies of their alternate selves that are from a near cannon timeline… They decide to Help Things- and manage to kill the Chancellor. Meanwhile the vod’e that they switch with are trying to get back home and hop a few universes before getting switched back… after the Sith versions kill the Chancellor.
Snippet
"Oh yes- and then have the might of the Alpha's sweeping through the Guard- and having the rest of the GAR of this galaxy find out as well and deal with the fall out- if not us, then when we switch back with our alternate selves, they will." Fox says with a snort.
Fox with a wince, his ribs are tender, he should not have laughed like that continued to speak after a breath or two, "If they were badly treated before and no one outside the Guard knew, perhaps they had reasons for it, as misguided and flawed as they likely were. We do not want to kark up their lives too badly when they come back.... If they can come back."
Thorn and Stone can see his point, but also, their plan to Kill the Demagolka was almost ready- all the information, all his dirty dealings, mistreatment of vod'e- and nat-borns, with the latter being the type of sentient that the wider galaxy will likely care more about, rather than the replaceable meat-droids, that they are called.
Covering all of one’s bases before toppling a powerful Sith is important before you take them out. The power vacuum that will happen, which will cause waves, and they are still trying to find the other plans that The Sith Demagolka has in place, finding them and trying to subtly defend and destroy them.
They have gotten half of the Coruscant guard's chips out, to prove that the so-called behavioral modification chips are unnecessary. Kote had gotten his out, once he had learned of them, not wanting to have such a thing in his head for a moment longer.
Thire and Thorn had managed to accidentally (on purpose) run into their c'yare Dogma and Tup while at 79's. When the higher-ranking pair are out of their armor and in their greys and had managed to speak with them for a while. Make the start of a connection. Kote had the easiest time speaking with his, the lucky shabuir, what with ARC Captain Rex working with him regularly.
Then something odd happens, things get strange, and Tup with a Medic named Kix are sent to Coruscant- because of Tup's irrational behavior and him shooting at a Jedi - and his seeming lack of understanding what is going on and only rare moments of lucidity.
Fox has one of the Corrie Medics check on Tup- and once he is sedated remove his chip- which looks severely karked up and the source and because of his wildly out of character behavior. Thire is holding one of Tup's hands he is nearly vibrating, with rage (for Tup) and worry for his beloved.
They can have one of the countless dead vod'ika that happen due to working on a place as Dangerous as Coruscant and swap them for Tup. It works- except that Bright, angry, caring Fives is sniffing out a conspiracy.
Fox has to chase after his beloved and while his is proud of him, he's also rather annoyed at him too, all of their hard work to unravel Palpatine's plots without the other noticing, slowing gathering of evidence to present to the nat-borns and the nearly ready time to kill him and Fives nearly ruins it all by trying to kill The Chancellor and now Fox and a squad of Corries have to hunt him down.

dw rewatch - takes from "rose"
companion watch:
Rose kinda plays the role of Ian in this episode. Action man. Etc
When Nine exits the frame in the Famous Walking Single Shot and Rose is left befuddled, after a second, she runs back- but it’s too late. The TARDIS is gone. It’s OK though because she’ll get a second chance. This moment is then repeated again at the end, giving us an expectation for Rose’s choices and specially, their timing. And... Rose takes a while to take the plunge… but gets there in the end. This is the emotional arc of the episode. If there’s an "appeal" to this story, beyond aliens, comedy, and its weight.. on its own, the pull of "Rose" is inspiring bravery. As Rose will say later, it’s not about the adventures or the aliens or the wonder... “it’s about taking a stance and doing what’s right, when everyone else just runs away”.
And it’s true: no one wants to solve the issues at hand: Jackie is more concerned with compensation, Mickey says “leave him!” when Nine is about to be slurped in physchic plastic lava, and no one on earth seems to know what is going on. But Rose is there to show that we all have a part to play in history, we all have a call at some point to do what’s right and to act. Even if we’re afraid or widely out of our depths. This is what makes the first adventure click, it's a universal story.
- “I got the bronze” even at "most condecorated" stage, Rose's archivement are very mundane and down-to-earth.
- Jimmy Stone / The Doctor parallels? Perhaps...? She definitely swore off pursuing her A-levels after this adventure.
- With just a few pointed lines, we learn that Rose’s relationship with her mom has some friction. It’s not a day after she almost died and Jackie is already pushing Rose to look for another job. She won’t coddle her and will make that loud and clear. There’s also a bit of… resentment? envy? In how she says it’s good Rose lost her job at the shop because it was giving her “airs and graces” (!!). It seems she wants her succeed but not in a way that makes her leaver her (oh hello, Jackie’s arc, nice to meet you). Also this line: “ Honestly, it's aged her. Skin like an old bible. Walking in now you'd think I was her daughter.”
- At the same time, we get from this episode’s climax (with Rose’s moment being intercut with Jackie’s almost dying, almost as if the editing is suggesting she can feel her mom’s in danger) that... at this moment, she’s the most important person for Rose. Which is sweet, it's a complicated, real relationship.
Themes: - Bodies used and discarded, separation of physical bodies and consciousness. The Doctor inspiring people to do brave actions. Mundanity and the extraordinary. Internet Culture and Fandom. Environmental crisis (blink and you'll miss it). London as a cosmo-politan city. Diplomacy vs violence. - vigilante justice and underground wars. conspiracies. "Well, who else is there? I mean, you lot, all you do is eat chips, go to bed, and watch telly, while all the time, underneath you, there's a war going on." A clear tension between the (relatively) comfy lives the Tylers live and the "world out there" that's burning in flames.
- Nine rumages over Rose’s living room, and this is how he finds her last name. Is this awkwardness? Or is this trying to “figure her out” in advance like Auton mystery? How much of this adventure was The Doctor inadvertly trying to impress her?. The Doctor as the maligned “shoot the messenger” trope.
Timeless Child Retroactive Continuity Bonus:
- Nine answers Rose by saying what he can do, not really who he is… or does he? what is the doctor but a title for someone whose entire identity is built around what they do (and not their memories, personalities or physicalities, as these are in constant flux)? Axiom 2 from this: the doctor's sense of self is only defined in the present moment. their sense of identity holds no permanence.
- The closest we get in the answer is the “I’m in despair” with a “if we let go…” what does it mean? We fall into the vacuum? We fall to existential despair, like Nine is right now after the Time War? Or perhaps that, like in Torchwood… “we’re moths clinging to the flame”, in the cosmic scale, all life is really, really small and really, really fragile.
- Could this space/time sixth-sens be a unique ability of the Doctor’s OG species? The mythology used to be that all time lords developed this sensibility to time, and that’s what allowed them to time travel. However, all other time lord characters dont seem to care very much about the universe around them. We know now that The Doctor has a special relationship to “Time”. Maybe, The Doctor’s gone so long assuming this is something every TL could do, when really is just something they could do.
Blorbos:
- Nine’s little “ok” when Rose’s turns him down TOT. Imagine taking a chance of being attached and vulnerable after being so traumatized and war-scarred and then. REJECTION. headcanon that that little eu gap is mostly him just processing this and getting the urge to ask the girl out again lol
- Nine and Rose hold hands so much here omg - Nine says he knew Mickey could survive but doesn’t confide this information to Rose. Was he trying to protect her feelings, in case it turned out Mickey was indeed dead? / - “Oh, I didn’t think about that”
Colonialism / Hegemony:
- The doctor shows a lot of prejudice to humans in this. And honestly, this gives me a lot of conflicting feelings. One thing I'm trying to do in this rewatch is keep a firm eye on the "white savior/colonialist fiction aesthetic/neoliberal power fantasy" spectrum of things and see what sort of things pop out. I think Nine's immediate "I'm so much Smarter and Intellectual THEREFORE I know what's best in Every situation" is a very good (bad) fuel to this strand of critique.
- but, it is narrative effective. it’s effective at showing us he’s quite full of himself, and humbling the viewer by telling them that hey, you don’t know everything that will happen in this show! - It also makes sense for Nine in particular to be this cynical, given what we know he's lived. But there’s also something a bit … grossly Victorian Intellectual about it. It feels like the pulpy DNA ethos, the one that comes from white “humanists” and “rationalists”, is very loud in those moments.
- In Dramatic Justice terms, The Doctor’s decision to seek a diplomatic solution comes at the cost Clive his life. Although we’re clearly meant to admire 9’s diplomacy, it is ultimately proven useless materially. But although there's an interest in reading the moment as virtuous, there's an ambiguity by Clive’s meta that in some ways The Doctor is a cause of destruction (which is a beat the series has never quite connected and I'll get to in s2... the timelords, and by extension, the doctor, were the cause of all these messes, but much like irl brittish imperialism and usa neoimperialism, the narrative is blind to their responsibility on the current mess).
- We learn the Nestene consciousness has high tech but not as high as the Time Lord’s (it gets scared by the TARDIS).
You cannot reason with an Invading force. That Nine attempts to do so without offering the Nastene any kind of deal, when he’s aware that they’re doing out of a need for Survival, for basic resources, seems almost like self-sabotage.
- Obviously, the implication is that humanity has caused this by being so damn contaminating. But The Nastene could’ve just eaten all the plastic and toxins honestly, would’ve done us a favor. Possibility for a symbiotic episode one day in the future?
