Wait wait, there are some interesting implications from this episode.

Sun and Neptune talk about “the night they got the case.” “The case” either means the day they decided to start looking into RWBYJ’s whereabouts, or (more likely) it’s a euphemism for the day this became a problem, aka the day Atlas arrived to Vacuo but RWBYJ didn’t. They said it was “stormy” the day they got the case, and although the visuals use a rainstorm, there was in fact a sandstorm the day everyone arrived (plus, Vacuo rarely gets rainstorms).

They said they got this case yesterday. Which means that this takes place the day after volume 8. This explains why Qrow was so quiet and angry.

This also means that a lot got done in one day: Raven arrived, the summer maiden was summoned to the academy, and most importantly, Ozpin’s whole deal was explained. Sun and Neptune kept correcting each other on calling him Oscar/Ozpin, like it’s new information that they’re just getting used to. But also, it’s something that they know about. They know about the maidens, too.

This means they also probably know about the relics.

Do you ever think about how common red is in the art gallery? The mannequins and painted ladies are most often red, Red Eyes and all the dolls, the mannequin heads have red mouths, etc. No wonder Garry thought Ib was another thing from the gallery at first. And on the other hand, it makes Mary look even less threatening in comparison.

I know I’m posting this at 2AM so not many will see this but I think there is truly a lack of characters like Toriel in the world. Moms so often get relegated to supporting roles, less than supporting roles, just there to see their kids off or die represent some ideal or to Be There, “the mom character” is almost synonymous with being a stock character. But the truth is moms’ stories are worth telling, including their lives outside of motherhood but motherhood itself is also a story worth telling too. Motherhood is full of losses and victories and ups and downs and learned lessons and deep emotional changes that people can empathize with. And Toriel’s story is one of those. She had children, then lost them, then went through that horrible cycle seven more times, stuck in it because of her own fear until she was brave enough to change things. That is an amazing story! And it’s the story of a mother. I’m not saying there are no other characters like her, I can think of several off the top of my head(my favorite is Hana from Wolf Children), but the stock version of the archetype is much more common to the point of it being the first thing lots of people think of. And I think that’s why she got turned into this flat character in fanworks(and probably still does, but I’ve curated my fandom experience so much I don’t see it anymore), because that’s what people were used to seeing from mom characters, so when it came to making more content of her that’s what they knew how to do. The same is true for all the other Undertale characters who got bastardized by the fandom, like Papyrus getting turned into an infantilized caricature and Mettaton into a homophobic caricature, etcetera. I’ve got no point to this post to end it with, I just really love Toriel.

One thing I liked in doctor who was when Martha had this whole plot to gather 3 different serums or whatever that when mixed together in a gun would be able to kill a time lord and the master caught on and tried to stop her. And then she told him to his face “are you fucking stupid? of course it was fake” it felt like a parody of those plots in stories where there’s a macguffin to kill a god, and the master is especially stupid for falling for it because he is that god. He should know what a time lord’s kryptonite is and also that there’s no way dystopian 21st century humans would be able to make it

I’m thinking about how in Blue Period, a part of the story was dedicated to the idea of the naked body and how the main character is ashamed of his, feels disconnected from it, thinks of it as just a pile of putty, how nakedness is extremely vulnerable and terrifying. And they talked about how close everyone is to death. And when he painted a live nude model, he recontexutalized all of these feelings about nakedness into seeing it as something beautiful.

And then later in the story, they introduced a character with him unveiling a fuckoff huge nude self portrait of him draped across a couch. What a effective and efficient way of telling everything you need to know about him as a person before he even says anything. Like, normally a character being introduced like this would be a quick way of saying "this guy's an arrogant asshole," but with the specific themes the story built about nakedness, it says that he's a very transparent and confident guy who knows himself well.

Also, they used the ocean to represent death during that arc, with it taking place in a hotel that overlooked the ocean, and he spends a lot of time there too fishing as a hobby.

Edit: I’ve been informed that that’s not himself he painted. But being this comfortable about nudity still shows more or less the same point. Also, I haven’t finished the manga, so I can’t say whether this ends up being an accurate assessment of his character, just that this was my first impression of him.
