Thomas Merton on "knowing God"
God is invisibly present to the ground of our being: our belief and love attain to him, but he remains hidden from the arrogant gaze of our investigating mind which seeks to capture him and secure permanent possession of him in an act of knowledge that gives power over him.
We know [God] in so far as we become aware of ourselves as known through and through by him. We "possess" him in proportion as we realize ourselves to be possessed by him in the inmost depths of our being. ... Hence the aim of meditation, in the context of the Christian faith, is not to arrive at an objective and apparently "scientific" knowledge about God, but to come to know him through the realization that our very being is penetrated with his knowledge and love for us.
Our knowledge of God is paradoxically a knowledge not of him as the object of our scrutiny, but of ourselves as utterly dependent on his saving and merciful knowledge of us.
—Thomas Merton, Contemplative Prayer, p.61

If you want to gather all your desire into one simple word that the mind can easily retain, choose a short word rather than a long one. A one-syllable word such as "God" or "love" is best. But choose one that is meaningful to you. Then fix it in your mind so that it will remain there come what may. This word will be your defence in conflict and in peace. Use it to beat upon the cloud of darkness above you and to subdue all distractions, consigning them to the cloud of forgetting beneath you.

"Things No Eye Has Seen and No Ear Has Heard, Inconceivable to the Human Mind..." Solving the Mystery of An Ancient Saying - Spiritual Awakening Radio Podcasts
Tumblr media
There's a spiritual saying, an axiom of wisdom, that's been meaningful to millions of people spanning many centuries, scriptures, spiritual classics, languages, nations, and several world religions from West to East, East to West. This saying was quoted by the Apostle Paul in the New Testament but it's been a mystery as to what exactly the SOURCE was for his quote. Today, we find out the origin of this saying, and get to hear various versions of this saying as it appears again and again in so many ancient texts, traveling far and wide, passing through Jewish or Rabbinical... also many Christian Apocryphal Writings. A version of it is even attributed to Jesus, and by this I don't just mean in The Gospel of Thomas (saying 17) but in many other sources as well, and I will explore many of those as they appear in other early Christian writings. Other versions also turn up in Egypt, Ethiopia, the Mesopotamian region, in Gnostic, Mandaean, Manichaean scriptures, Suras of the Quran, a couple of Hadiths, and there's even similar versions to be found in the writings of Kabir, Guru Nanak, and other sources in India.
This wisdom saying is central to the spiritual journey as it pertains to The Spiritual Seeing and Spiritual Hearing Capacity of Souls, and being Initiated into the Mysteries of the Kingdom of Heaven. The Master says, "I will Give You Things No Eye Has Seen and No Ear Has Heard, Inconceivable to the Human Mind..." - Solving the Mystery of an Ancient Saying... today on this Spiritual Awakening Radio podcast. I will turn this into a satsang and include related teachings from Kirpal Singh and others... on spiritual seeing and hearing that which is inconceivable to the average human mind, what has typically not occurred to the heart of man.

Even when my heart looks away from the Lord, even when it desires what harms it, I rest knowing - certainly - God knows best.
It is not my responsibility to test, navigate, measure and retest the routes of life. My frail mind and faded senses are incapable of such a task. They have no foresight. As for hindsight, they forget the truth they have already learned. Memory erodes truth, and I fall again for the lies of the devil. Appointing myself as the captain of my ship drives me into needless suffering and anxiety.
But He - God - His eyes see all. His character is love, compassion, and justice. His Way, modeled by Jesus, is perfect. His Word, unfolds his glory and captivates my heart.
I rest knowing that what I seek when my heart is wayward- truth, comfort, hope, peace - is made whole in Him. When I remember this, I am able to depart from my idols without regret, because my faith in Him is certain.
This is the greatest freedom, to no longer be a slave to futility, regret, terror, and isolation.
Surrender to God, beloved. Surrender- as you surrender to the current of a river you have been staggering upstream of your whole life. What you seek wants you. It wants and will carry you. It is Love, Peace, Awe , and beloved, it is Alive.

“But whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither— whatever they do prospers.” —Psalm 1:1‭-‬3 (NIV)
“Meditate on God’s Word | Psalm 1:2-3” By Tricia Goyer:
Prayer for while you meditate:
“Dear Heavenly Father, Lord, help me be like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. May I delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night. And because of your word planted deep, may whatever I do prosper and bring glory to your name.” Amen. 🙏

FIVE MINUTE MANTRA
This is a simple breathing technique I’ve used off and on for years. The first line starts on the inhale followed by the second line on the exhale. That’s essentially it. Here’s a breathing counter to help you get used to it.
I will eventually get an entire series of five minute mantras put together and uploaded onto YouTube. I just wanted to share what I’ve put together on Tumblr first. (the Brother-Hermes blog existed before all of the others and you guys have shown mad love over the years) If no one has told you today: you are loved. You matter.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
本来、目的とはこのように進歩しながら、周囲にあるすべてのものを一つの方向に促すものだ。一つの目的によって、ほかの一つが破れるなどということはありえない。もしあるとしたら、それは目的ではなく欲望である

Quote
The image was that of a divine light, powerful enough to illuminate the deepest corners of our souls; it was a light that shone on us and penetrated into us. [Quakers] rethought that image by speaking of an inner light, “something of God” that could be found within every human soul... Silent worship came about because George Fox and other early Quakers believed that silence and stillness would enable people to apprehend the presence of the Inward Light which would show them the unflinching truth about their lives, including what they ought to do to align themselves with God’s will.

Solving the Mystery of An Ancient Saying: "What the Eye Has Not Seen, the Ear Has Not Heard…"

First Letter of Clement 34:8: "For He [God] says, 'Eye has not seen, and ear has not heard, neither has there entered into the heart of man, what things He has prepared for them that wait for Him.'" (Charles Hoole trans.)
“How privileged are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear. I swear to you, many prophets and righteous ones have longed to see what you see and didn’t see it, and to hear what you hear and didn’t hear.” (Matthew 13: 16–17 = Q/Luke 10: 23–24 — New Testament and Sayings Gospel Q)
“His power will be given to them, which no eye has seen nor ear heard, and they will rejoice in My Kingdom.” (Jesus, apocryphal “Testament of the Lord in Galilee”)
“The rest of you shall inherit the kingdom of heaven, whose delights no ear has heard described, which no eye has seen and which has not appeared in the human heart.” (Jesus, Apocryphal Gospel of John)
Yeshua says, “What your own eyes cannot see, your human ears do not hear, your physical hands cannot touch, and what is inconceivable to the human mind — that I will give you!” (Jesus/Yeshua, “Gospel of Thomas”, Saying 17)

They shall be comforted
“Blessed are those who mourn, For they shall be comforted.” (Matthew 5:4) The second beatitude builds on our mental recognition of our poverty of spirit by adding an emotional response of sorrow. When we face the evil in our own lives, it saddens us; when we face the evil in the world—which includes possible evil in our workplace—that, too, touches our emotions with grief. The evil may come from…

I always thought the Pharisees hated Jesus because he blasphemed by saying he was the Son of God, and they couldn’t see past their traditions.
But no! Maybe blasphemy was the reason they disliked him in the beginning.
But as Jesus shows himself to be God through more and more good works, culminating in the raising of Lazarus from the dead which precedes this passage, they actually hate him MORE which makes no sense if you think they’re concerned about blasphemy.
No, Jesus’ good works are leading more and more people to believe in him, thus decreasing the Pharisee’s power, influence, prestige.
The more the Pharisees see the glory of God in Jesus, the more they hate him, because it steals away THEIR glory.
So it is ego and pride, that cause the Pharisees to seek to murder Jesus.
