A Practically Nonsensical Review: THE FINAL ROSE (2022)
Tumblr media
"Love at Last nation cares. America cares"
Soooo, this was such a.....journey.
I'm glad the horror genre is catering to us trash tv lovers.
THE FINAL ROSE is The Bachelor but with a slasher twist. It is low budget, dumb and fun, just how I like my slashers. Reality TV based horror is a sub-genre that keeps on giving.

"They might not do these things to us and we only know who they were to us but that doesn't mean they didn't do horrible things and to discredit the abused is a crime. People we know as ‘awesome guys’ can be predators and abusers. It’s tough to accept but we have to. If we say we support victims — women, children, men, boys — then we must be able to take this stance."

Christina Ricci Warns Of 'Awesome Guys' After Kutcher's Support For Danny Masterson | HuffPost Entertainment
So sometimes people we have loved and admired do horrible things,” Ricci wrote on her Instagram story in what some see as a response to Kutcher and Kunis’ actions. “They might not do these things to us and we only know who they were to us but that doesn’t mean they didn’t do the horrible things and to discredit the abused is a crime.”
“People we know as ‘awesome guys’ can be predators and abusers,” she added. “It’s tough to accept but we have to. If we say we support victims — women, children, men, boys — then we must be able to take this stance.”
“Unfortunately, I’ve known lots of ‘awesome guys’ who were lovely to me who have been proven to be abusers privately,” she wrote. “Believe victims.”

Some people do have common sense and decency in Hollywood!
Leah Remini has been highly vocal of Scientology and in this case what his name Masterson.
Another person who has made an Instagram statement is Christina Ricci! Everything she stated is on point.
My thanks to them both! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
I don't know what to make of Bijou Phillips. Given what happened with her father, John Phillips and her half-sister, Mackenzie, which by the way Bijou did not believe her but Chyna , the other half-sister, did because Mackenzie told her several years prior to her making it public of her ordeal. (By the way, Valerie Burtenelli, Mackenzie's co-star on One Day At a Time supported her, she had known about it for quite some time.)
It is very sad all around!
Like I stated on X referring to Masterson: BOY, BYE!

Guest stars of note:  Ashwin Gore as ONI Inspector General Akhil Ali, Sandrine Holt as Laura Song and Christina Masterson at Lily Song
Our heroes:  Tell their stories.
What important things did we learn about:
Callen:  Didn’t want Laura Song to have a gun. Sam:   Didn’t want Laura Song to have a gun. Kensi:  Found Laura Song. Deeks:   Will not be operational if anything happens to Kensi. Fatima:   Shot. Rountree:   Knows to bring a book, music or a game to a long stakeout. Kilbride:  Used by Laura Song because he was damaged.
What not so important things did we learn about:
Callen:   Scotch. Sam:   Bourbon. Kensi:   Always ‘en fuego’. Deeks:  Theorizing what his coworkers do on Sundays. Fatima:   Breaking a dinner date with Ben to be on the protection detail. Rountree:  Doesn’t think Fatima likes Ben. Kilbride:  Partial to maritime art.
Where in the world is Henrietta Lange?  Location not mentioned but her fingerprints are all over the safehouse in the episode according to Laura Song.
Who's down with OTP:  If anything happens to Kensi, Deeks is so done.
Who's down with BrOTP:  Callen and Sam were not their usual jokey self when things started all going to hell.
Fashion review:  Callen begins the episode in a black leather jacket and black tee-shirt.  For his interview, Callen is wearing a long-sleeve dark blue tee-shirt.  Sam is wearing a red long-sleeve tee-shirt in the safehouse, a black long-sleeve tee in his interview.  Kensi spends Sunday in a pale pink sweater before wearing a black blouse to the interview.  Deeks is in a dark blue henley and khaki pants in the boatshed. In his interview, he’s wearing a muted, pale grey sweater.  Fatima starts the episode in a blue and gold plaid button-down with a black turtleneck.  In interview, she is wearing a grey and white silk blouse over a grey turtleneck.  Rountree shows up at the safehouse in an olive green jacket and white tee-shirt.  In his interview, he’s wearing a white dress shirt.  The Admiral is in a blue-grey suit, pale blue dress shirt and darker blue tie for the safe house.  For his interview, Kilbride is in a dark grey three-piece suit, pale pink dress shirt, red tie.
The day after the interviews, Callen is in a dark green and white plaid shirt.  Long-sleeve grey tee for Sam.  Cornflower blue tee for Kensi, red tee for Deeks.   Blue three-piece suit for the Admiral with a pale blue dress shirt and grey tie.
Music: None.
Any notable cut scene:  No.
Quote:  Deeks:  “Yeah, as you may already know based on your fancy file you have in front of you, Agent Blye and I are trying to adopt a child.  As hopeful parents and law enforcement officers, getting killed in the line of duty has obviously crossed our mind once or twice.  And I fully recognize everyone deals with trauma differently, but if Kensi…if Kensi, um died, I don't... I just can't imagine remaining operational with an 11-year-old.  And yet that's exactly what Laura Song chose to do.  So I just thought that information should be relayed to Sam.”
Honorable mention:
Kilbride:  “And that's what happened.  The tactical team was not there to kill her. They were there to extract her. And we didn't lose an operative. I killed a traitor.  And now that you know that, you are going to forget it.” Ali:  “Admiral, you have committed perjury and obstructed a federal investigation. I need to report all this to SECNAV.” Ali:  “She already knows, you idiot. Go ahead. Call her. I'll wait.”
Anything else:  A woman is walking to her SUV in a shopping mall parking lot.  She’s carrying several bags as she speaks to her daughter on the phone.  She refers to them as “Us Song girls” as she explains they need to meet that night, she’s leaving for business the following day.
Using the remote to open the SUV’s back door, she dumps her shopping bags, noticing a big, black SUV is creeping near her.  The woman tells her daughter that she has several things to discuss and it has to be that night.  Saying ‘I love you’ and goodbye, the big SUV pulls up.  It is Callen and Sam.  They need to take the woman – Laura Song – to a safe location.
Kensi and Deeks arrive to an empty Ops, which makes sense since it is Sunday.  Kensi wants to know where everyone is.  Deeks supplies possible Sunday morning activities for his teammates – Sam is fishing, Fatima is drag racing, Rountree’s “crushing” a hot-dog-eating contest, Callen is “smooching it up” with Anna while “you and I are at the beach, drinking mojitos out of a can.”  Except of course, they’re in the office because Kilbride called them in.  Kensi wonders what Kilbride does on a Sunday.  “Goat yoga and ASMR” is Deeks’s guess.
Mentioning Kilbride’s son, Kensi is not sure what kind of relationship to the two have.  Deeks does not envy “Son of Kilbride” but Kensi disagrees.  Deeks is assuming that Kilbride is the same kind of parent as he is the new OSP director.  Kensi talks about her dad, who was a “tough son of a bitch” to those Marines in his command but with her, he was just ‘Dad’, her best friend and whole world.  Deeks really agrees and wants to ask Kilbride about fatherhood, maybe hold hands, cry things out and do some trust falls.  Kensi thinks Deeks will leave without a limb.  Once again, Deeks agrees, thinking Kensi’s “en fuego” today.  Kensi reminds him she’s “en fuego” every day.
Deeks moves on to the Admiral walking up and down the aisles of Home Depot wearing a vest and answering questions about wood screws.  Kensi thinks he then goes home and watches “The Dirty Dozen” to learn from Lee Marvin.  Of course the Admiral pops up on the big screen in Ops.  “Thank you for the compliment, Agent Blye.”  The Admiral is on a flight back to Los Angeles.  The team has to protect a Deep Cover operative who may be compromised.
The operative is Laura Song who for the last 20-years has provided crucial intel on China’s Navy.  If she is compromised, the Chinese government is going to want her dead.  While others are working on figuring out if Song’s identity was leaked to the Chinese, Callen and Sam are taking Song to a safe house.  Fatima and Rountree will also be there.  Deeks wants to join them but the Admiral has a different assignment for them.  Song’s daughter is a freshman at USC who needs to be moved to the boatshed until the Admiral gives them the all-clear.  Kensi and Deeks are on their way.
Fatima and Rountree arrive at the safe house.  Fatima blew off a date at L’Ardoise – “the hottest reservation in LA.”  Rountree says to go next weekend but there is no way Fatima and Ben, her date, could get a table.  This is all confusing to Rountree – dinner dates are supposed to be relaxing and fun not like ‘The Hunger Games’ where only the rich eat steak.  Fatima notes the place is vegan, annoying Rountree even more.  He eats at “normal places without apostrophes in their name.”  He likes places where you show up and get fed.  The two start up the cameras and connections to the office.  “We are ready for Laura Song.”
Callen and Sam arrive with Laura Song after a tour around Los Angeles to make sure they weren’t followed.  Sam calls for Rountree, who comes to the building’s lobby to meet with him and Laura Song.  She is being moved a secure apartment on the top floor.  Fatima is in the apartment making sure everything is acceptable.  Sam is going to walk up the stairs to make sure things are secure – something Rountree already did.  The elevator arrives.  Sam takes the stairs, Callen and Laura song are in the elevator.
Exiting the elevator, Laura Song is worried about her daughter, who does not know her mother is a spy.  Callen assures her NCIS is picking the young woman up.  Inside a well-appointed apartment, Song meets Fatima, who is sorry all this is happening but the place is secure.  The doors throughout the apartment are solid steel, the windows are bulletproof and there is a panic room in the bedroom.   Song is impressed but she thinks if “this is the end, I’m going to die in the open, not in a box.”  Callen promises her this isn’t the end – her cover may still be intact.  Kilbride will know more.  Song says her life is in their hands.
One hour later, there are blue and red emergency lights flashing.  Admiral Kilbride is walking over a lot of glass while there is first responders radio chatter in the background.  Using a flashlight, the Admiral finds Callen and Sam, sitting on the floor as Laura Song is zipped into a body bag.  He demands to know what happened.
On Tuesday, November 9th, ONI Inspector General Akhil Ali is set up in a generic conference room.  He is doing a date/time stamp on a digital recorder (which should have those things).  He’s been assigned to investigate the death of Laura Song, especially since there is no security footage of what happened.  Members of the team have been kept away from each other for 36-hour to keep them from “corrupting their accounts.”  Callen is the first interview – he has two small cuts on his cheek near his right eye.  He was in the secure room with Laura Song.  Asked about Song, Callen calls her confident and forceful – someone who would be willing to fight.  Ali brings up Song’s drinking, which Callen confirms but states it was not enough to get drunk.  The scotch did make Song “chatty”.
In a flashback, Song has a bottle of scotch and a pair of glasses.  She asks Callen if he works for Hetty Lange.  Callen says he did but doesn’t really know right now.  He wonders how Song knew.  Looking at the safe house, “Hetty’s fingerprints are all over this place.”  Song offers Callen a drink – he respectfully says no – and ask how long Callen knew Hetty.  Callen gives a general “feels like all my life” when Callen turns the tables.  He asks about Song’s relationship with Kilbride.  She gives a similar reply.
Chatty, Song was born in Nanjing but her mother was American.  After her father’s death, Song was moved to San Diego.  While she didnt like it right away, she loved the ships.  At 17, Song joined the Navy.  That’s where she met the Admiral.  Song wanted to work on a ship but he saw a different path for her.  Things are coming full-circle.  Kilbride put her into the world of espionage and now he’s pulling her out.  Since every operative has an expiration date, she knows she chose this life and the risks that go with it.  Callen assures Song that NCIS protects their own.  Sam arrives with a phone – Song’s daughter is on the other end.
Ali asks Callen how much did he have to drink.  Callen did not have anything to drink that day.  Asking what happened next, Callen tells Ali that he left the apartment to call Kilbride for an estimated time of arrival.  The call only lasted three-second however, since all cell service and power were cut to the building.
Callen in flashback is back in the apartment.  Sam can’t contact Fatima or Rountree, Song wants a gun.  Ali asks if Callen provided her with one.  He did not.  Not because she was drinking as Ali assumed but because Callen’s experience told him not to put a gun into a protectee’s hand, especially one who is trained.  “It was our job to protect Song, not hers.”  Giving her the gun would have been a go-ahead for Song to take risks.  Not that it stopped her anyway.
Looking out the safehouse’s window, Callen notes that the lights are on across the street.  Just their building is dark.  Sam wants to move Song into the panic room but she’s already left the apartment.  In the hall, Callen and Sam try to reason with Song but a gunman comes crashing through a skylight.  Sam pulls his weapon.
Now Sam is being interviewed.  Ali wants to know what Sam did after the perimeter check.  After Callen left to call the Admiral, Sam said Song was in the bedroom talking to her daughter.  Sam was sympathetic.  He knows from personal experience how hard it is to protect your family from your work.
In the apartment, a grateful Song returns Sam’s phone.  She wonders if this is a blessing in disguise.  If her cover is blown, ending her career, Song could spend more time with her daughter.  Song’s daughter attended boarding school – the teachers there were more of a mother than Song was.  “Now I have to bribe her with gifts just to have her have dinner with me.”  Song thinks her daughter is probably better off without her.  Always positive, Sam thinks Song shouldn’t pull away from her daughter.  It will just make things harder.  Song asks about Sam’s daughter, who is the same age as Song’s and also a boarding school kid.  Song asks about Kam’s relationship with her mother.  Sam explains they got along while Michelle was alive.  Song startled – apologizing profusely.  Sam explains Michelle died in the line of duty.  Song starts to repeat the line about every operative having an expiration date.
Back in interview, Ali asks about Song’s drinking.  Sam said he saw a bottle of bourbon but didn’t see Song drink any of it.  Ali and Sam go back and forth about scotch versus bourbon but Sam is sure is was bourbon but if it is really important to the investigation, Ali could check it out the room.  While it is probably in a million piece, what’s left of the bottle is likely still there.  Sam is bothered that Ali is worried about the minutia of the case.
A bit unnerved, Ali asked what happened next.  In the apartment, Sam gets a call from Deeks but that call goes dead quickly.  Sam tries to talk to Callen, Fatima or Rountree with no luck.  When the power goes out, Song wants a gun.  Ali asks if she was given one.  Sam did not believe the situation warranted arming Song.  They weren’t under attack but that changed.
Back in the hallway with Callen, Sam, Song and the guy coming in from the skylight, Callen grabs Laura Song while Sam starts to fight with skylight guy, who is wearing a bulletproof vest and a helmet covering his head and face.  After a struggle, Sam takes the rope skylight used to get onto the floor and uses it as a garrote.  A second man appears at the top of the skylight and starts shooting at Sam.  Sam uses the first skylight guy as a shield to get back to the apartment.
Callen and Laura Song are in the apartment with Sam.  Sam is a bit annoyed that Callen left him behind but Callen’s plan was to get Laura Song to the panic room.  Laura Song is of course standing in the middle of the living room and not the panic room campaigning to get a gun.  Ali asks if the situation called for Song to get a gun. Sam said the situation called for moving Song into the panic room, even if she didn’t want to go voluntarily.  Sam is seen grabbing Song and pushing her to the panic room.
As Sam and Song get near the bedroom, the apartment door is blown off, hitting Sam and Song.  Callen ducks behind some furniture as several gunmen dressed like skyline guy enter the apartment.  Callen takes down one and calls for Sam.  One of the gunmen grabs Laura Song and takes her out of the apartment.  A third gunman throws a concussion grenade into the middle of the apartment.
Callen is being interviewed now.  When he woke up after the explosion, Song was dead.  Interviewing Sam, Ali asks if Sam believes he made the right decision not to arm Song.  Sam does.  Callen says the same thing in his interview.  Sam takes responsibility for what happened, Callen knows that they were there to protect Laura Song, she should not have had to protect herself.  “That was our job.  And we failed.”
It is Rountree’s time in the interview chair.  He tells Ali that he and Fatima did all the required perimeter checks and reported back to Callen and Sam.  It was a quiet assignment for them.  With his FBI background, he’s done a lot of stakeouts.  He knows to bring a book or some music.  This time he brought some magnets as part of a game.
In the safehouse’s Ops area, Rountree is playing a game, Fatima is checking her phone – her date is officially missed.  Rountree doesn’t think Fatima is missing much – not the food or her date Ben.  Fatima claims to like Ben but Rountree isn’t so sure.  “You act like it is a chore to meet up with the guy.”  Fatima tries to pick-up a magnet as part of the game but gets three – a losing move.  She goes off to pray.  Rountree tells Ali faith is important to Fatima.   Ali accuses Fatima of leaving her post to attend to a personal matter.  Rountree says nothing was going on and if something did, Fatima was on comms.
Back in the safehouse, Rountree is packing up his game when all the video cameras go dark.  “I didn’t even touch anything.”  At first, he’s worried about the magnets screwing everything up but then he lost power.  When they lose power in a situation like this, comms is supposed to migrate to a nearby cell tower but that didn’t happen.  Rountree knew they were using a strong signal jammer.  Fatima returned from prayers saying they have company.
When the door to the interview room opens, Fatima walks in with crutches.  Ali wants to help but Fatima claims she fine.  He still pushes the interviewee chair back so Fatima can sit.  Once in their proper places, Ali asks Fatima about her leg.  She calls it annoying but recovering – in fact she has a doctor’s appointment after the interview.  Ali promises to move things along but goes on about Fatima’s background and accomplishments.
In Fatima’s testimony, she was winning the game – crushing “‘Tree”.  Rountree feels badly she missed her date but Fatima is fine with it.  Also, she doesn’t think Ben is really her type.  Ali asks why Ben wasn’t her type.  Fatima doesn’t know if that is relevant to the investigation.  After the game, Fatima went to pray.  It is something she does “when reasonable” during the day.  Her faith makes her a stronger person and a better agent.  Ali admires Fatima’s commitment to their faith.
During prayers, she saw gunmen in a window behind her.  Fatima tried to contact Rountree but comms were down.  She goes to find Rountree.  The two check out the lobby.  When Fatima goes near the front door, she sees it is wired with a bomb.  Fatima runs from the door which explodes behind her.  Gunmen enter the building, firing at both Fatima and Rountree.  Hiding behind a column in the lobby, Fatima and Rountree are able to take down several of the gunmen before running upstairs to find Callen, Sam and Laura Song.
On the top floor, Rountree shoots the man trying to kidnap Laura Song.  There are other gunmen on the floor with Fatima and Rountree trying to get Laura Song to safety.  Rountree is able to get Laura Song into an elevator but Fatima is too far away.  As she is steps away from the elevator, Fatima is shot in the leg.
With no power, the elevator isn’t moving.  Rountree opens the hatch at the top of the elevator.  Song wants Fatima to go up next but Fatima wants Song to go next.  Men yelling in Mandarin are outside the elevator door.  Song and Rountree get Fatima to the top of the elevator when Song locks the hatch.  Rountree tells Ali he isn’t sure why Song did what she did.  Fatima thinks Song was trying to save the two of them.  Rountree heard the gunshots.  “We had her and we lost her,” Fatima tells Ali.
Kensi is being interviewed next by Ali.  She confirms that she and Deeks were assigned to bring Lily Song, Laura’s daughter, to the boatshed.  At the boatshed, Kensi puts the Admiral on the big plasma screen so he can explain to Lily what’s going on.  Stating that the Admiral know Laura Song from previous art purchases, he assures the young woman that she’s safe and so is Laura.  Normally, the FBI would handle a threat like this but NCIS is involved because Laura Song means a lot of the Admiral.  The team is the best – “I trust them with my life,” according to the Admiral.  Lily is grateful.  When the Admiral ends the call, Deeks calls Sam to get Lily on the phone with her mother.
While Lily talks to Laura, Deeks is happy that the Admiral thinks the team is the best and trust them all with his life.  Kensi chuckles.  The Admiral was lying to them.  In his interview, Deeks is asked by Ali about the Laura Song-Kilbride relationship.  Deeks asks if Ali ever saw the movie “The Dirty Dozen”.  Ali has not.   Neither has Deeks, who thinks Kilbride is an onion.  “He has layers,” Ali notes.  “And every single one of them will make you cry.”  Also crying was Lily Song who is afraid of losing her mother too.  Lily’s dad died when she was 11.  Kensi and Deeks did not know that.  Dad Song died in a car crash.  Her mother was heartbroken.  “But losing him, it almost destroyed her,” Lily tells Kensi.
While Lily talks to Kensi, Deeks looks pensive.  While she knows her mother feels guilty about working so much, and she’s away a lot, Lily noticed her mother “got better” when she returned to work.  Kensi is impressed by Lily.  Deeks excuses himself to check in with Sam.  In the interview, Deeks is distracted.  Deeks explains to Ali what he’s sure Ali already knows – he and Kensi are trying to adopt.  In their jobs, they’ve thought about dying in the line of duty.  While Deeks understands everyone deals with trauma differently, Deeks struggles to say that if Kensi died, he could not stay operational with an 11-year old.  He thought Sam should know that information about Laura Song.
When Deeks calls Sam, the connection is lost.  He tells Kensi that the safehouse is offline.  Deeks gets an LAPD alert about shooting at the safehouse.  Kensi goes to be with the team, Deeks stays with Lily.
At the safe house, the comms are back when Kensi arrives.  The gunman with the signal jammer must have retreated.  Kensi enters the building and found Laura Song dead in the lobby.  She was shot through the heart.
Kilbride is the last interview.  Asked what happened when he arrived on scene, the Admiral said nothing happened when he arrived on scene, everything already happened.  “Laura Song was dead.  Are we done?”  Ali says they are not.  Ali has a different view of what happened from a construction site near the safe house.  The Admiral arrived, went inside and left before Kensi got there.  Moving toward Ali, Kilbride turns off the recorder and admits he’s the one who shot Laura Song.
Looking a bit worried, a sitting Ali is paying strict attention to the Admiral, who is standing over him.  Based on some intel leaks, the Admiral thought Laura Song was turned by the Chinese.  Since she served the US for 20-years, he wanted to be sure before making any accusations.  The cover being blown story was false so the Admiral could have her in a secure location for a real interrogation.
The team was not told about the Admiral’s plan.  “I needed them to play their roles perfectly.”   His team was good but Laura Song was the best operative he ever saw.  Arriving at the safe house, he saw Laura Song leaving with the gunmen, speaking to them in Mandarin.  It was obvious she was the person in-charge.  The Admiral shot both of the gunmen before firing at Song.  She was pointing her weapon at him.  He tells her to drop the gun.  She does not, realizing that this whole blown cover story was to get her in custody.
Song offers to tell the Admiral the truth but he does not believe her anymore.  She raises her gun and is shot for the second time.  The gunmen were not there to kill her, they were there to rescue her for the Chinese government.   The Navy didn’t lose an operative, Kilbride killed a traitor.  “And now that you know that, you’re going to forget it,” Kilbride tells Ali.  Ali is having none of it – Kilbride committed perjury and obstructed justice.  He’s about to call SecNav but the SecNav already knows, “you idiot.”  Ali calls the SecNav and gets an earful.  Everything Kilbride sad was true.
The Admiral explains that everything about this case was decided before Ali got involved.  The truth of the story makes the US look weak.  If Laura Song dies a hero, Ali investigation into NCIS is to keep Callen and company from wondering why they weren’t in trouble for getting Laura Song killed.  Ali is bothered by this – the team is full of guilt over Song’s death.  “If they have a great need to wallow in their angst, who am I to stand in their way?” the Admiral asks.  Cyber Command will issue a report saying that the Chinese broke into ONI’s security system so they knew the minute Laura Song entered the safe house.  The team did the best they could and Kilbride expects to see that in Ali’s report.
Ali has one last question – the Admiral knew Song longer than anyone.  He recruited her, trained her, why did she turn?  “That’s her story to tell,” the Admiral says as he leaves.
The following day, Callen and Sam are in the bullpen when Kensi and Deeks arrive.  Callen asks about Lily, who is alright because she’s strong like her mother.  Deeks ask how Callen and Sam are doing.  Callen’s done with questions, especially how’s he doing.  Sam agrees.  Kilbride arrives with a case.  Everyone slowly goes up to Ops.  Nobody is happy as they shuffle their way to Ops.  Kilbride watches them go.
Sitting in his office, Kilbride starts to work but remembers the final minutes with Laura Song as he looks at a photo of her.  Before she died, Song tells Kilbride that he didn’t recruit her all those years ago, she chose him.  A man with a broken family looking for a second chance was the perfect mark.  He doesn’t believe her and as she goes to shoot him, Kilbride kills her.  The episode ends with the Admiral tucking the photo away in his leather agenda.
What head canon can be formed from here:  This is probably the best talky episode of any show in a good long time.  They mixed the talking with action, which worked perfectly.  The small differences in the story make sense because while they didn’t remember all the small stuff perfectly – and usually to their own advantage – they remembered the big stuff just fine.
The head canon – something we doing get much of in season 13 of any show – is Fatima’s dating life and the Admiral’s family history.  Also, Laura Song mentioned that Hetty’s fingerprints are all over the safehouse.  Does Hetty know Laura Song?  Do her spy bosses know about Hetty?
I forgot the “trust falls” with Deeks and Kilbride started here.
Episode number:  This is episode five of season 13, episode 285 overall.

Astronomers Spot 18 Black Holes Gobbling Up Nearby Stars - Technology Org
Star-shredding black holes are everywhere in the sky if you just know how to look for them. That’s one message from a new study by MIT scientists appearing in the Astrophysical Journal.
MIT scientists have identified 18 new tidal disruption events (TDEs) — extreme instances when a nearby star is tidally drawn into a black hole and ripped to shreds. The detections more than double the number of known TDEs in the nearby universe. Image Credit: Courtesy of the researchers, edited by MIT News
The study’s authors are reporting the discovery of 18 new tidal disruption events (TDEs) — extreme instances when a nearby star is tidally drawn into a black hole and ripped to shreds. As the black hole feasts, it gives off an enormous burst of energy across the electromagnetic spectrum.
Astronomers have detected previous tidal disruption events by looking for characteristic bursts in the optical and X-ray bands. To date, these searches have revealed about a dozen star-shredding events in the nearby universe. The MIT team’s new TDEs more than double the catalog of known TDEs in the universe.
The researchers spotted these previously “hidden” events by looking in an unconventional band: infrared. In addition to giving off optical and X-ray bursts, TDEs can generate infrared radiation, particularly in “dusty” galaxies, where a central black hole is enshrouded with galactic debris. The dust in these galaxies normally absorbs and obscures optical and X-ray light, and any sign of TDEs in these bands. In the process, the dust also heats up, producing infrared radiation that is detectable. The team found that infrared emissions, therefore, can serve as a sign of tidal disruption events.
By looking in the infrared band, the MIT team picked out many more TDEs, in galaxies where such events were previously hidden. The 18 new events occurred in different types of galaxies, scattered across the sky.
“The majority of these sources don’t show up in optical bands,” says lead author Megan Masterson, a graduate student in MIT’s Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research. “If you want to understand TDEs as a whole and use them to probe supermassive black hole demographics, you need to look in the infrared band.”
Other MIT authors include Kishalay De, Christos Panagiotou, Anna-Christina Eilers, Danielle Frostig, and Robert Simcoe, and MIT assistant professor of physics Erin Kara, along with collaborators from multiple institutions including the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics in Germany.
Heat spike
The team recently detected the closest TDE yet, by searching through infrared observations. The discovery opened a new, infrared-based route by which astronomers can search for actively feeding black holes.
That first detection spurred the group to comb for more TDEs. For their new study, the researchers searched through archival observations taken by NEOWISE — the renewed version of NASA’s Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer. This satellite telescope launched in 2009 and after a brief hiatus has continued to scan the entire sky for infrared “transients,” or brief bursts.
The team looked through the mission’s archived observations using an algorithm developed by co-author Kishalay De. This algorithm picks out patterns in infrared emissions that are likely signs of a transient burst of infrared radiation. The team then cross-referenced the flagged transients with a catalog of all known nearby galaxies within 200 megaparsecs, or 600 million light years. They found that infrared transients could be traced to about 1,000 galaxies.
They then zoomed in on the signal of each galaxy’s infrared burst to determine whether the signal arose from a source other than a TDE, such as an active galactic nucleus or a supernova. After ruling out these possibilities, the team then analyzed the remaining signals, looking for an infrared pattern that is characteristic of a TDE — namely, a sharp spike followed by a gradual dip, reflecting a process by which a black hole, in ripping apart a star, suddenly heats up the surrounding dust to about 1,000 kelvins before gradually cooling down.
This analysis revealed 18 “clean” signals of tidal disruption events. The researchers took a survey of the galaxies in which each TDE was found, and saw that they occurred in a range of systems, including dusty galaxies, across the entire sky.
“If you looked up in the sky and saw a bunch of galaxies, the TDEs would occur representatively in all of them,” Masteron says. “It’s not that they’re only occurring in one type of galaxy, as people thought based only on optical and X-ray searches.”
“It is now possible to peer through the dust and complete the census of nearby TDEs,” says Edo Berger, professor of astronomy at Harvard University, who was not involved with the study. “A particularly exciting aspect of this work is the potential of follow-up studies with large infrared surveys, and I’m excited to see what discoveries they will yield.”
A dusty solution
The team’s discoveries help to resolve some major questions in the study of tidal disruption events. For instance, prior to this work, astronomers had mostly seen TDEs in one type of galaxy — a “post-starburst” system that had previously been a star-forming factory, but has since settled. This galaxy type is rare, and astronomers were puzzled as to why TDEs seemed to be popping up only in these rarer systems. It so happens that these systems are also relatively devoid of dust, making a TDE’s optical or X-ray emissions naturally easier to detect.
Now, by looking in the infrared band, astronomers are able to see TDEs in many more galaxies. The team’s new results show that black holes can devour stars in a range of galaxies, not only post-starburst systems.
The findings also resolve a “missing energy” problem. Physicists have theoreticially predicted that TDEs should radiate more energy than what has been actually observed. But the MIT team now say that dust may explain the discrepancy. They found that if a TDE occurs in a dusty galaxy, the dust itself could absorb not only optical and X-ray emissions but also extreme ultraviolet radiation, in an amount equivalent to the presumed “missing energy.”
The 18 new detections also are helping astronomers estimate the rate at which TDEs occur in a given galaxy. When they figure the new TDEs in with previous detections, they estimate a galaxy experiences a tidal disruption event once every 50,000 years. This rate comes closer to physicists’ theoretical predictions. With more infrared observations, the team hopes to resolve the rate of TDEs, and the properties of the black holes that power them.
“People were coming up with very exotic solutions to these puzzles, and now we’ve come to the point where we can resolve all of them,” Kara says. “This gives us confidence that we don’t need all this exotic physics to explain what we’re seeing. And we have a better handle on the mechanics behind how a star gets ripped apart and gobbled up by a black hole. We’re understanding these systems better.”
