True story...
Tumblr media
Years ago, renowned fantasy artist Todd Lockwood pitched me a children’s Christmas book idea based on the Twelve Days of Christmas. On paper, it was a fantastic concept. I felt sure it would be a holiday classic, but it was incredibly ambitious.
There are a lot of children's Christmas books published each year. It is a competitive category. Then he shared some of his illustrations - they blew me away. He had created a wild and anarchic celebration of the timeless holiday song that honors the anthropomorphic illustrations of the great Wallace Tripp and Bill Peet while incorporating elements of Where’s Waldo and Graham Base’s Animalia. This was a book kids would want to read over and over every year, finding and counting all the characters and discovering something new each time they explored the detailed illustrations.
But back then, working with traditional publishers, Christmas books came with very rigid milestones to hit. There were firm on-sale dates and a short holiday book sales season. In the end, to do a book like this Todd Lockwood, one of the most in-demand fantasy artists working, would have to clear his schedule and work exclusively on these grand illustrations for a year to make those dates. The logistics just didn’t work. There were just too many already contracted New York Times Bestselling book covers to paint.
But that was the pre-Kickstarter world. At last, this epic work will hit the press, and I can’t recommend it enough. If you have kids, you will want to make this book a family Christmas tradition.

RECIPE: Fudge Cake with Caramel-Bourbon Buttercream (from Christmas with Southern Living 2022)
This swoon-worthy layer cake is a chocolate-lovers’ dream!
Serves 16
Active: 1 hour
Total: 3 hours, 10 minutes
FUDGE CAKE
1½ cups bittersweet chocolate chips
½ cup butter, softened
1 (1-lb.) pkg. light brown sugar
3 large eggs
2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for pans
1 tsp. baking soda
½ tsp. table salt
½ tsp. ground cinnamon
1 (8-oz.) container sour cream
1 cup hot strong brewed coffee
1 Tbsp. (½ oz.) bourbon
CARAMEL BUTTERCREAM
1 cup granulated sugar
1/3 cup water
1/3 cup heavy cream
¼ cup butter, chilled and cut into ½-inch pieces
1 cup butter, softened
4 oz. cream cheese, softened
½ tsp. vanilla extract
¼ tsp. table salt
4 cups unsifted powdered sugar
CHOCOLATE GANACHE
8 oz. semisweet baking chocolate (2 [4-oz.] baking chocolate bars), chopped
6 oz. bittersweet baking chocolate (from 2 [4-oz.] baking chocolate bars), chopped
1½ cups heavy cream
ADDITIONAL INGREDIENT
Shaved bittersweet chocolate
Prepare the Cake: Coat 2 (9-inch) square cake pans with cooking spray; dust with flour. Preheat oven to 350°F. Microwave chocolate chips in a microwavable bowl on MEDIUM (50% power) until melted, about 2 minutes, stopping to stir every 30 seconds. Stir until completely smooth.
Beat butter and brown sugar in the bowl of a heavy-duty stand mixer on medium until combined, about 5 minutes. Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating to combine after each addition. Add melted chocolate, beating until just combined.
Sift together flour, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon. Gradually add to chocolate mixture alternately with sour cream, beginning and ending with flour mixture, beating on low speed to blend after each addition. Gradually add coffee, beating on low. Stir in bourbon. Pour batter evenly into prepared pans.
Bake cake layers in preheated oven until a wooden pick comes out clean, 22 to 25 minutes. Cool in pans on wire racks 10 minutes. Remove cake layers from pans; transfer to wire racks to cool completely, about 1 hour.
Prepare the Buttercream: Place sugar and water in a saucepan; cook, stirring, over medium-high, until sugar dissolves, about 1 minute. Bring to a boil over medium-high. Cook, without stirring but swirling pan occasionally, until deep amber, about 10 minutes. Remove from heat. Add cream in a steady stream, stirring constantly. Stir in chilled butter until smooth; transfer to a bowl to cool, about 1 hour.
Beat softened butter and cream cheese in bowl of a heavy-duty stand mixer on medium until creamy, 3 minutes. Stir in vanilla and salt. Add 2 cups of the powdered sugar, beating on low until smooth, 2 minutes. Add caramel; beat on medium until combined, 2 minutes. Beat in remaining 2 cups powdered sugar on low to combine.
Prepare the Chocolate Ganache: Microwave semisweet and bittersweet baking chocolates and cream in a microwavable bowl on MEDIUM (50% power) for 1 minute. Remove and stir. Microwave until melted, 3 to 3½ minutes, stopping to stir every 30 seconds.
Assemble Cake: Place 1 cake layer on a platter; pour half of ganache on top, allowing some to drip over edges. Freeze to set, about 5 minutes. Spread half of buttercream to edges. Top with remaining layer; repeat with remaining ganache and buttercream. Garnish with shaved chocolate.

Book Blurb:
Should I have trusted my tyrannical boss when he promised he’d get me home for the holidays? Absolutely not.
He gassed up his private jet and decided he’d be joining me so we could close this massive deal before the new year.
There are three conditions to him coming home with me:
1. My family can’t know that he’s my boss (See note above about him being a tyrant) 2. I will absolutely be getting a big fat raise 3. He has to help me with my holiday wishlist
What’s worse than my boss stealing Christmas? Him pretending to be my boyfriend.
Since he’s faking being in love with me, my mom put us together in my childhood bedroom with just one bed to share.
When the mistletoe comes out, I can’t help but wonder what would happen if my hot as coal boss and I were underneath.
Jack Sinclair is nothing but determined to get everything he wants this Christmas, and it looks like I’m at the top of his list.
Review:
What happens when your grumpy grinch of a boss tags along with you for your holiday visit to the family and pretends to be your boyfriend? Apparently a very cute Christmas romance. Jack is a billionaire CEO and a bit of a grinch, he's demanding, cold, and a workaholic. Presley is his assistant, she's sweet, kind, and in love with Christmas. When Jack demands more of her time despite her heading home to her two week vacation ( she has not taken a single day off), Presley tells him she's not staying... so he decides to go with her to visit her family so she can work with him. To make matters worse, he tells her parents he is her boyfriend... and gets to her from them how much her parents dislike her tyrannical boss. Jack and Presley are forced to share a room, and a bed.. and now they both are dealing with the feelings and tensions that have been growing in them for three years. Jack has been in love with Presley since the first moment she stepped into his office but tried to maintain a professional relationship as much as possible, however that kind of backfired on him as she thinks he's cold and aloof and just wants to make her miserable... he'll just have to prove to her that he is very serious about wanting a relationship and if that means this grinch is gonna grow his heart three sizes, so be it. Jack is determined to do everything on Presley's wishlist and show her just how in love with her he is. This was an adorable Christmas rom com with a grumpy x sunshine couple. Super cute and spicy and I had a blast (plus I would love to red more romances from this author about Presley's brothers).

I love reading holiday-themed books over winter vacation, and The Clockwork Crow is a wonderful one to curl up with when it's snowing outside ❄️
I wrote a review on my blog (check it out!🎄), here's an excerpt:
The Clockwork Crow is a whimsical winter’s tale set in a mansion full of secrets and dangerous magic!
On her way to her godparents’ mansion in Wales, orphan Seren Rhys is handed a large parcel by a stranger. When she arrives at the house on a cold December day and opens the package, she finds the pieces to make a mechanical crow inside. Seren can’t resist assembling the crow and she discovers to her surprise that he can move and talk when he’s wound up! The magical clockwork crow helps Seren find clues to solve the mysterious disappearance of her godparent’s son, Tomos, who has been missing from the house for a year. In hushed voices people speak of fairies having taken him, but can that be true? ...
The Clockwork Crow has an eerie and mystical atmosphere which seems to penetrate your bones as you read about Seren tracing clues in her chilly and forbidding new home. I really enjoy how she and her strange crow companion have to scrape together bits and pieces of information about what happened to Tomos while the stern housekeeper, Mrs Villiers, tries to keep Seren in the dark.
