[ID: The covers of two Christopher Brookmyre books, The Sacred Art of Stealing and A Snowball In Hell. End ID.]
One of these days I need to get A Big Boy Did It And Ran Away so I can reread the whole trilogy together, but when I first started buying my own I got these two quickly because I adore Angelique de Xavia and I ESPECIALLY adore her relationship with the artistic thief Zal Innez (if you were as obsessed with the Kaitou Kid as I was as a teenager, he's an easy character to love :v). Much like Discworld books, I often find new jokes to laugh at and themes to think about when rereading Brookmyre books, and this time I wound up thinking a lot about Angelique and Zal's exchanges about belonging. They both have complicated relationships with Scottishness; Angelique is the Glaswegian-born daughter of Ugandan refugees, "the only brown face in a sea of white" as she describes her position at school, at Rangers games, and in the police force. She's extremely Glaswegian in her outlook, humour and defiant bullets-bounce-off attitude, and yet often feels unentitled to Scottishness, which makes her wave her Rangers scarf all the more defiantly. Zal, meanwhile, was born in the US to a Scottish emigrant father who so loved and missed his hometown that he threw a massive party for a Rangers victory that none of his neighbours understood (but attended anyway because hey, free barbeque!), and almost idealizes Glasgow, describing it at one point as "a theme park to his father's memory". They're both coming at the same city from very different perspectives, but at the same time they both feel both belonging and not-belonging to Scotland and Scottishness, and learning to navigate that feeling of belonging/not-belonging in different areas of their lives is one of the things they first bond over while being on opposite sides of a bank robbery investigation. Both also spend a lot of time dealing with whiny, entitled, glory-thieving little shits in both the police and criminal worlds, share artistic tastes, and have similar senses of justice, which helps you really buy the quick, intense connection that forms between them (which is probably helped along by how incredibly horny they are for each other, emotionally and physically)
The robbery itself, in The Sacred Art of Stealing, is so much goddamn fun that I'm SEVERELY mad that there isn't already a film of this book, though possibly any chance of that happening is undermined by the fact that a large amount of plot in the second half revolves around a deliberately provocative statue of a man sucking his own willy. There's also the major character with multiple internal monologues about how much he loves the economic and social simplicity of paying for a blowjob, which you could easily cut out of a filmed adaptation, but damned if they aren't funny as fuck most of the time. I feel like they'd wind up cutting a lot of the banter between Zal and his buddies Leo, Jerome and Karl, too, which would be just such a goddamn shame.
"I'm not touching him. If anyone helps him, it should be Jerome. He's the expert at putting hands on pricks." "It's a shame your sister ain't here, Leo. I don't know if she's much of a nurse, but it'd probably make him feel better to be in the company of someone who goes down faster than he just did." And so on.
(They are best friends and would die for each other.)
There might be a slightly better chance for A Snowball In Hell, though I feel like you really do need to read the first two parts of the Angel X trilogy first to well establish Angelique, Zal, and the terrorist Simon Darcourt, who is so far up himself that he's brushing his teeth from the inside. It's a frankly much-needed evisceration of British media behaviour via the very non-metaphorical evisceration of fictional British media personalities and is arguably one of the gorier books Brookmyre's written, though he's pretty talented at describing gore by not describing it in a way that gives your imagination a lot to work with. (There's a scene involving Darcourt putting some arms industry execs up close and personal with their own hardware that's honestly pretty satisfying and probably impossible to put onscreen without being ludicrously gory, but is very entertainingly described.)
It's such a delight to read the sections about Zal working with the aging, arthritic magician Dan Morrit, helping him revive his show and Zal really loving what he's doing for the first time in his life. If you like stage magic, you'll love Zal; If you like hypercompetent wee wimmin who are better than literally everyone they talk to learning to process Emotions and start wanting things because they make her happy instead of just to spite others, you're gonna love Angelique. Please god will more people read these books and yell about them with me

34 ORCHARD ISSUE 9 IS HERE!
The twenty-one artists in 34 Orchard Issue 9 examine all aspects of waiting: its ups and downs, its held-breath nature, its power. A dead girl languishes instead of going towards the light and a predator banks on his next meal. One mother is driven to pursue a reunion with her daughter, another’s moment for revenge finally arrives, and generations of sons resist—yet compulsively anticipate—the…

K&GM: Christophe's Family
I was surprised when I got the call for a new reality show competition. Knowing that I didn’t even apply confused me, but apparently my name was submitted by an anonymous source. Probably someone at work. They’re always pulling this sort of prank. However… this is a prank that involves me going on international television and competing for a prize. I don’t even know what’s on the line! But I love…

It's Halloween (the best day of the year, obviously) so I came up with some headcanons for how my characters celebrate.
Below the cut, because it's a long list
Our Man Flint
Flint carves squashes to scare off demons and celebrates harvest with his community. This is before people viewed Halloween (or All Saints Day, or All Hallow's Eve) as satanic.
August and Ambrose don't celebrate Halloween, since at this point in history it was a very Christian affair.
Eden
Ezra listens to Spooky Scary Skeletons on loop through all of October. He hands out jolly ranchers and snickers to trick or treaters, paying them tons of compliments on their costumes.
Christopher attends the harvest party at his church with his relatives. Afterwards they head back to his house to make carmel apples and bake pies. He always helps his nieces and nephews carve pumpkins.
Colt's house is a favorite in his neighborhood, since he gives out ridiculous amounts of Russian sweets. He makes in poor taste jokes about hiding razor blades in candy, but never actually does it.
Jay, before the events of the story, would usually go to Halloween themed orgies or just stay home. They weren't ever big on holidays.
Divinity
Wren doesn't celebrate holidays, other than ancient religious ones from his religion.
Mary gives the trick or treater's multiple king sized candy bars, as well as carmel apples she makes herself. She dresses up like a black cat every year.
Blood Sacrifices
Ve'Qren, when he survives to the modern day, thinks Halloween is a grand holiday. He loves playing dress up, giving out sweets to little humans, and watching horror movies. It's the only holiday he puts any effort into.
Humanity's Collector
Harlow doesn't like Halloween, because it triggers his paranoia. So he spends all day in his house trying to pretend it doesn't exist.
Glade loves seeing what new anatomically incorrect fake skeletons humans come up with this year. The amount of Halloween decorations in xeir pocket dimension is remarkable.
The Doll Collector
Dahlia dresses up to match whatever her brother is doing. Every year, they go out to parties and get wasted, then return to his apartment to watch Bela Lugosi's Dracula.
Jules celebrated Halloween as a kid, but hasn't had anything to do with it since he turned sixteen.
Zion takes his kids trick or treating, and dresses up a universal monsters. One year he got creative and went as the vampire from Blacula, but he usually sticks to more recognizable characters.
Viola stays home and watches scary movies. She gives out peppermints and butterscotches to any kids who ring her doorbell.
The Collector throws a masquerade party every year, where the guests wears a surgeon's yearly salary worth of jewels, not to mention the costumes themselves.
Sanctuary
Mordecai loves Halloween music to a fault. He dresses up as characters from old Hollywood movies. Nosferatu and Citizen Kane are his go-to's.
Rahab never liked Halloween all that much. She took Mordecai trick or treating when they were kids, and gave all her candy to him.
Ishtar doesn't know what Halloween is.
Rosemonda preaches that holidays are improper and not to be celebrated by her "faithful followers". She's a kill joy like that.
You can't Follow Your Heart if there's a Stake Through It
Jacob adores Halloween. It's the only time of year where it's acceptable to play songs about necrophilia and grave robbing. He dresses up like vampires most years, and owns a very nice set of fake fangs.
Rurik doesn't know anything about Halloween. Holidays don't matter much to him.
Jericho doesn't celebrate Halloween for religious reasons.
Angelique, Clara, and Karina dress up as the Heathers. Every year. No one finds it funnier as they do.
Alma gives out homemade cookies to the trick or treaters, but doesn't dress up herself. She takes any opportunity to dote on little kids.

Because I can’t help myself, here’s how i would have structured a 13 ep season of the Mayfair Witches
Episode 1: (After the cold open with Deirdre) Establishing Rowan’s skill as a Doctor/Suzanne’s skill as a midwife, Rowan’s comfort with sex/Suzanne exchanging sex for protection, Ellie’s cancer resurgence/Suzanne’s mother getting attacked and/or sick where we get the ‘death is your job too’ speech, Rowan attempting to get Ellie into the trial/Suzanne participating in the May Day festival to prevent a witch hunt, Rowan mourning her mother alone/Suzanne wailing with her fellow clanswomen over her mother’s death and her own pregnancy
Episode 2: Cold open of Deirdre waking up, seeing Carlotta and putting herself through a window to try and kill her. Suzanne taking Deborah to the field to summon Lasher/Rowan trying to find out about her origins and getting the first inklings of Lasher’s presence, Suzanne burning and Petyr ‘saving’ Deborah/Rowan finding out about Deirdre’s death and spiraling during which Ciprien shows up to offer protection and guidance, Deborah going out of control and running away from the talamasca/Rowan accidentally harming Ciprien and running away to New Orleans
Episode 3: Cold open of Deborah in prison, handing the emerald over to Petyr to deliver to their daughter Charlotte as a pretense to get him there. Rowan disoriented in New Orleans and contacted by Ciprien/Charlotte trying to settle into Saint Domingue when Petyr comes to deliver the emerald and make sure she’s okay, Rowan meeting Carlotta and getting an invite to the funeral then meeting with Ciprien where they connect hands and as a result fall into intimacy/Petyr and Suzanne connecting over Deborah’s death and drinking heavily until he wakes up with her on top of him disgusted, Ciprien deciding to stay and help/Petyr abandoning Suzanne
Episode 4: Cold open of Charlotte’s death and the emerald passing to Jean-Louise, being named heir to everything even though she’s not the first born son. Mona, Carlotta, Rowan and Cortland all preparing for the funeral and then meeting at the church where we see all of their reactions to Deirdre’s death/Jean-Louise explaining death and the legacy to her daughter Angelique, Wake at the house where Mona keeps trying to get Rowan’s attention but keeps getting swerved by Cortland, Carlotta (and Jojo, I like her so we can keep that scene in the dining room) who have their own agendas. She tries to get Rowan to come with her but Rowan opts to stay to talk to Carlotta instead. Jean-Louise spreading her power and influence over Haiti to build up wealth for her family/Carlotta explaining the legacy in its current form and putting the emerald on Rowan’s neck before she passes out because Carlotta drugged her drink (trying to keep Lasher dormant again).
Episode 5: Cold open of Carlotta visiting Mona to give her clothes for the new school year and disclosing that she has Rowan ‘well in hand’ which Mona freaks out about and Carlotta locks her in the attic. Ciprien returns and finds out Rowan is being held, recruits Delphine to help rouse her before Carlotta returns. They go to the law office to look over the legacy paperwork. Angelique struggles to run the family estate on her own/Rowan makes plans on how to utilize the new resources, Angelique convinces Vincent St. Christophe to marry her to run the estate and carry on the family line/Rowan convinces Ciprien she needs an ally against Carlotta and they decide to get married
Episode 6: Rowan making allies in the family and making plans for the wedding/Marie Claudette being warned by her slaves about the coming revolution, where she aids them with resources and they help her and her family escape
Episode 7: Marguerite’s wedding to Tyrone McNamara/Rowan’s wedding to Ciprien. The morning after he’s taken by the Talamasca, reprimanded for his decisions and forced to defend himself and then given the files on the Mayfairs to arm himself, unfortunately leaving Rowan alone with Lasher. Marguerite’s experiments and interactions with Julien/Rowan experimenting with her own abilities while on what’s meant to be her honeymoon
Episode 8: Katherine partying with her brothers and content to leave management to Julien until she meets Darcy Monahan. Ciprien returns but only to inform Rowan of what’s going on and spending a little time with her before returning to the files, promising he’ll turn them over when he can. Rowan overseeing remodeling the house/Katherine building the house, both efforts face complications but both arcs end with a massive housewarming party. Mona once again tries to talk to her but gets stopped.
Episode 9: Rowan coming into control of her own powers and ostensible control of Lasher/Mary Beth using her own powerful abilities to control the spirit and build the family up.
Episode 10: A focus on Stella, how she lived blissfully with Evelyn until she returned home, and then attempting to leave with Stuart Townsend before being murdered, episode ends with Ciprien finally getting the second floor attic open after several attempts have failed, finding the jars and seeing what happened through Stuart’s eyes.
Episode 11: Ciprien is in the hospital from the heart attack he suffered, Rowan leads the cleanup of the attic and grapples with isolation and another potential loss. We parallel with Antha, growing up under carlotta’s thumb after witnessing the murder of her mother until she eventually commits suicide. At one point we see Rowan standing on that same balcony and only stops herself from climbing over because she gets nauseous, shortly after discovering she’s pregnant.
Episode 12: Deirdre’s life and grappling with an unplanned pregnancy/Rowan attempting to figure out how to tell Ciprien. Lasher is trying to get her to focus on building her abilities as “the time is coming to use them”. By the end of the episode Ciprien returns home from the hospital and promises to fill her in on what he learned, but gets sidetracked when she tells him she’s pregnant.
Episode 13: Rowan hosts a christmas party to announce the news to the family. We see when this announcement is made that Mona reacts poorly only to be stopped from saying something by Carlotta, who smacks a hand over her mouth out of sight of everyone else. After the party, Rowan and Ciprien talk about all that he learned from the files and share theories on what Lasher’s true motivations might be. When Ciprien gets close to the truth, Lasher affects his heart again and he falls in the pool while Rowan begins to miscarry. Lasher is reborn and we end the finale with Mona breaking out of the attic and getting to the house too late, Carlotta lifting the emerald out of a pool of blood and placing it around her neck.
Obviously this restructures the plot a bit but keeps the important points and elements, and the ancestors with less going on leaves more room for much needed time with the characters. I even kept in Ciprien and Jojo, because they’re okay, but I seriously cannot forgive them for replacing Mona with a washed out OC.

No popular bands playlist challenge: Dr Mensah
So it turns out the hard part is not the “no popular bands”, it’s the “30 minutes.”  need to get the VIBES RIGHT for the Best Human
Astronaut's Hymn - PDX Broadsides
AMBÈ - Fatoumata Diawara feat. SOMI, Mayra Andrade, Thandiswa Mazwai, Inna Modja, Dianne Reeves, and Angelique Kidjo
I Won’t Back Down - performed here by Dawn Landes, originally by Tom Petty
Gambia - Sona Jobareth
Hymn to Breaking Strain - Leslie Fish and Julia Ecklar
Hamsáfár - Christopher Tin feat. Sussan Deyhim
Lean on Me - Bill Withers
Commentary on track selection:
This fanmix alternates between English language songs (representing Dr. Mensah as an individual) and non-English-language songs (representing Dr. Mensah in her role as a representation, embodiment, and promise of the ideals of Preservation as a polity that she believes in so strongly.  It’s also getting some of the musical inspirations for what some of the music on Preservation might sound like.)
“Astronaut’s Hymn” - Mensah is so strongly rooted in her love and responsibility for her family and home, even as she is also an Intrepid Galactic Explorer doing cool stuff on distant planets
“AMBÈ” - means “Together” in Bambara, a song about unity and peace and mutual respect and support for all people.
“I Won’t Back Down” - the spirit of sticking to your moral beliefs in the face of difficulty is perfect, but Tom Petty’s music isn’t quite right, and I wanted a female vocalist.  This kind of sad, wistful rendition feels appropriate.
“Gambia” - in Mandinka.  This is a song about, well, the Gambia.  It is very much a song about Gambia.  But it’s about how much the singer loves her home country and its people.
“Hymn to Breaking Strain” - a turning point, meant to be read here as a bitterly ironic self-reckoning.  It’s a song about being human and fucking up and failing, but it’s specifically a song about how, when human-made machines and constructions fail, it’s not the machine’s fault, it’s the human engineer’s, because humans are the ones who create the machines and have the sole unique capacity to be aware of what we’re doing and that we’re failing.  In TMBD, that’s both kind of true and extremely not true!  Human responsibility and human failing and trying to do right, next to a machine that has been used by humans but also seems flawlessly good at its job except for the limits humans put on it... and the knowledge that no one will tell you what the right thing to do or the right way to bear this guilt is.  You gotta - and you can - rise up and build anew.
“Hamsáfár” - “Journey Together”, in Farsi/Persian.  Lyrics come from the Rubaiyyat, the song comes from the “Dawn/Rebirth” movement of Calling All Dawns.  A promise of joy, life, and hope together.
“Lean on Me” - I was debating between this one and “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” but I like the understanding of reciprocity here.  The friendship, gentle offers, mutual trust, strong responsibility but also understanding of personal need for support will come too.  Mensah and Murderbot feelings :’) We all need somebody to lean on.

Dark Shadows (2012)
Tumblr media
While I didn't enjoy this film, that doesn't mean you won't. No matter what I say, the people involved in this project did it: they actually made a movie. That's something to be applauded. With that established...
Dark Shadows shows promise at first, with tried-and-true but effective “fish out of water” humour. From there, the plot gets progressively unsure of where it wants to go, until it starts throwing stuff at the screen haphazardly. I don’t know if anyone could’ve salvaged a workable film from the woeful screenplay by Seth Grahame-Smith but director Tim Burton doesn’t seem to be trying very hard.
In 1760, Barnabas Collins (Johnny Depp) breaks the heart of his servant, Angelique (Eva Green). After she uses dark magic to kill Barnabas' fiancée (Bella Heathcote) she transform him into a vampire - so that he will outlive anyone he ever loves. Soon after, he is captured by villagers and buried "alive" in a coffin. Escaping from his prison in 1972, Barnabas finds his descendants in financial ruin, his beloved reincarnated as their new nanny (Bella Heathcote as Victoria), and Angelique still alive and still obsessed with him.
After the fact, it’s obvious Barnabas is the film’s main character. While watching, it isn’t so clear. You think Victoria will be a major player but she’s an afterthought with no personality. Most of the character feel like director Tim Burton self-indulging a little by tossing a bone to his favourite performers (Christopher Lee has a minor role which can’t have taken more than a day to shoot) or like inclusions put there just because they had an equivalent in the original 1966 television series. The film lasts nearly two hours. If you cut out Helena Bonham Carter as the Collins family doctor who does very little doctoring, the kinda-sorta misfit son David (Gully McGrath), his ne’er-do-well father (Johnny Lee Miller), the rebellious teenage daughter (Chloë Grace Moretz), the elderly maid (Ray Shirley) and the drunken groundskeeper (Jackie Earle Haley), you probably wouldn’t have more than 40-minutes’ worth of a movie. That’s not much but it’d be tighter, focussed and more enjoyable. None of these people have anything to do, and the less said about Alice Cooper’s cameo as himself, the better.
It feels like a bad soap opera that’s being made-up on the spot. Stuff just happens and sure, sometimes it’s funny but nothing’s building up to anything bigger. Now Dr. Hoffman is seducing Barnabas. Ok? Why? So we can cement that everyone finds Johnny Depp in vampire makeup irresistible? I guess that’s a thing but I don’t really get it.
Then, finally, a facsimile of a plot rears its ugly head. Ah! So the film is about Angelique and Barnabas’ rivalry. Wait. She waited 200 years for him to escape from the box she buried him in and in the meantime, she’s been using her fishing business to drive the Collins out of house and home? What a lame way to use your magic powers. It all builds to a lacklustre conclusion in which people are thrown around by magic. I think we’re supposed to feel upset about doomed romances and people caught between two irreconcilable worlds but so little time has been spent fleshing out the mushy stuff you just don’t care.
As an 18th-century vampire struggling to keep up with “modern” technology and sensibilities, Johnny Depp does well. He delivers all of the film’s best moments and yeah, some of it you’ve seen before but it’s still effective. The costumes, sets and art direction are also quite good so visually, Dark Shadows is pleasant to look at - especially when Eva Green is seducing Barnabas. Just about everything else is cringe-inducing and tone-deaf. Sexy as she may look, Green is terrible in this role and I can’t even blame her. No one shines thanks to the weak screenplay and scatterbrained direction torn between drama, horror and comedy. I nearly completely forgot about Michelle Pfeiffer, which is too bad because her character actually contributes something of value to the story.
The first time I saw Dark Shadows, I didn’t love it but found things to enjoy and gave it a mildly positive review. Re-examining it now, 3 stars seems way too generous. Although never awful, Dark Shadows doesn't give you many reasons to watch it. (April 5, 2019)

Lara Parker has passed away.
She was the original Angelique on Dark Shadows. She also wrote several Dark Shadows tie-in novels from Angelique's perspective. Dan Curtis had given her permission to carry on writing Dark Shadows books before he died.
I used to have a book signed by Kathryn Leigh Scott (Maggie / Josette) and Lara Parker.
Since 2012 Dark Shadows fans have lost Jonathan Frid (Barnabas), John Karlen (Willie Loomis), and Christopher Pennock (Jeb Hawkes), who I had been friends with here on Facebook.
Lara Parker had always been kind to fans and was a very talented author.
