Macaroni Penguin (Eudyptes chrysolophus)
The Macaroni Penguin's amusing name, first recorded in the 19th century in the Falkland Islands, apparently comes from its yellow crest. It is thought to have diverged from its closest relative, the Royal Penguin, about 1.5 million years ago. They are classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN.

Sometimes “rizz” (charisma) just isn’t enough. To attract a mate, a male Lady Amherst’s Pheasant (Chrysolophus amherstiae) will engage in an elaborate courtship dance. What's more? He has dazzling plumage to add to his appeal, along with tail feathers that can reach an impressive 31.5 inches (80 cm) long! While this bird prefers to stay on the ground, it occasionally takes flight to escape from foes or to reach treetop roosts. One might spot this species in parts of Asia, such as southwestern China, where it inhabits bamboo forests. That is a male golden pheasant (Chrysolophus pictus) kept in an aviary in the UK. We had a great conversation, and I gave him a thumbs up.

If you like to draw and ever have the opportunity to observe one, especially one flying, pay attention to it! The balance of their wonderful heavy tails means that they move like dinosaurs or dragons.

Quick rough sketch of this month's bird oc.
Meet Lockjaw, a Wallop with vampirism and a member of the wandering Duskblades squadron (lead by Pictus Chrysolophus) and acting as the team's strongman. The peach segments on his face are the result of burns from sunlight, which also blinded him due to repeated exposure.
