charles lee ray and carrie white friendship headcanons

a long but barely thought out list of headcanons because i am so invested in this concept. mostly these are about the positve parts of their friendship. added a cut just because it's a long post. more notes in tags.

i am a sucker for "friends who apparently hate each other but stick together because they have no one else"

this is exactly charles and carrie

well they don't hate each other

but from an outside perspective they don't seem to really like each other either

they only hang out because they are the biggest losers in school and no one else will talk to them

*creepy outcasts*

no one sits with carrie at lunch so one day charles does because her table is empty and he doesn't want to sit with other people

so he sits down at the other end of the table like "do not speak to me"

and carrie is just like, wide eyes, fear, "okay"

and that is the start of a beautiful friendship

weird kid solidarity

their reluctant friendship is a long time in the making, it takes months for them to even really speak to each other

slowly charles starts sitting closer and closer to carrie on their otherwise empty lunch table

until he starts sitting opposite her

she is split between being strangely happy that someone is willing to sit near her, when she has been banished from everyone else's table

but she knows what people say about him

he is No Good

even her mother knows that charles ray is to be avoided, he's a sinner, he's ungodly, he will lead her to sin if she even goes near him

but carrie sees something about him. she's very observant

she's already starting to question the morals and beliefs of her mother, maybe not everything will send you to hell ?? she wants to be normal !!

befriending charles is probably not the best route to normality, but it's something

she feels less scared at lunch knowing charles is there to watch her back

she starts reading while she eats lunch because charles is there to protect her

he would rather die than admit this but he would protect her if he had to

they start talking at first just about school stuff, charles is bad at doing homework and will sometimes get the answers from carrie for classes they are in together

one time someone tips milk over carrie's lunch tray as they walk past

but charles promptly sticks his foot out to trip them

"leave off her, asshole"

eventually he's like "you know, you can call me chucky, I prefer it"

he calls her caz

they both have terrible parents

unspoken agreement that they both Understand(tm)

carrie learns not to ask about it when chucky shows up to school with a black eye

this happened enough times for her to just be extra nice to him on those days (even though she is always nice)

she lends him books she think he'll like

usually ones that she reads in the library that she can't take home with her because her mother would Not Approve

her favourite recommendation for him is catcher in the rye

he brushes her off at the time but does actually read what she gives him

will mention something about it to her over lunch so she knows

her niceness confuses him

years of abuse have made him rough and mean, but carrie is still soft and good

she has the softness he wishes he still had

partly why he wants to protect her, she's like the sister he never had

as weird as he thinks carrie is, Chucky roasts her mom all the time to try and make carrie feel more normal

like "Yeah your mom's a religious nutjob, all her 'everything is a sin' shit? total bullshit. you'll be fine caz, you're the last person who'll be going to hell"

doesn't stop him from ripping on carrie too sometimes, like "will you quit following me around, I don't want people to think I like you"

will still walk to class with her

carrie manages to convince her mom that she has compulsory study hall after school, so she will be home late

goes to chuck's house when his dad isn't home (which is frequently)

carrie is surprised by the crucifix that hangs on the living room wall in the ray household but doesn't say anything about it

they listen to the radio because carrie isn't allowed music at home

they have very different tastes once carrie becomes familiar with what they play on the radio

she likes simon & garfunkel and the beatles

chuck likes black sabbath, pink floyd and led zeppelin

their song(tm) is sound of silence

he walks her home, but leaves at the corner of her block so her mom doesn't see because of the one time

one time he got too close to the house and her mom saw

carrie was in the cupboard all night

and a purple bruise bloomed over her cheek the next day at school

chucky doesn't say anything about it but he gives her a candy bar or something because that's what nice people do

when The Incident happens, he doesn't see her till the next day

"I heard about what happened in the locker rooms" he says when he sits opposite her the next day at lunch

"you did?"

"everyone did"

carrie is still obviously upset, but charles, as tactless as he is, is like "Why worry? everyone knows, now you can just move on."

she's like ??? "but it was so humiliating"

chucky, ever the gentleman goes "so what? you're on the rag and your wacko mom didn't tell you about it before, things can only get better from here"

she's highkey embarrassed to talk to him about it but he's surprisingly chill about the whole thing

honestly he's just used to the rumour mill and having people shit talk him so he wants to at least take some of the worry/embarrassment off carrie

in another life, maybe they would be together and have a normal life, but that's not what this life had in mind for either of them

(they don't even tell each other this, but secretly they think of themselves as chucky and caz vs. the world)

here we are at the main event, with credit to @adoredmarigold who does so much of the leg work on this niche au !! cut added to shorten post.

carrie desperately wants to be normal for once

chucky has long since given up on that

she suggests they go to prom together, as friends

to which chucky responds incredulously, "why would we want to go to prom?"

he cannot think of anything worse than standing in the school gym for like 4 hours surrounded by the people that make fun of them every single day

carrie keeps on pestering him

and he just does not get why she's making such such a big deal out of it

he genuinely hadn't even thought about prom, it just was not even a consideration for him

he suggests they skip prom and do something else instead

"why don't we just go up to the movies or something, or go up to the woods?"

carrie keeps on at him because why is he not making an effort to fit in and do normal stuff and just go to prom with her ??

he snaps "because we're not fucking normal, caz!"

that really hurts her tbh

they fall out for about a week until The Incident in the locker room

sue and tommy's plan is almost thwarted because tommy assumes carrie and chucky would go to prom together, if they are going at all

("just ask her, please?" "won't she be going with ray?" "charles ray? he was probably banned from prom before school even started")

tommy does still ask her and she tentatively agrees

when chucky finds out about it he is like *this is fucking sus*

corners tommy in a hallway between classes and is like wtf is going on

tommy tells him he's just being nice and asking carrie to prom so she can have a nice time

chucky doesn't believe him for one second

but he doesn't want to ruin what could be carrie's chance to get what she wants and have a nice, normal prom

so he let's it go but threatens tommy with great violence

"if you hurt her I swear to god I'll kill you >:("

he puts on his best Good Friend face and tries to be happy for carrie

she doesn't have any other friends to talk to so chucky sits and listens to her talk about her dress and how tommy is real sweet

he nods and agrees and says he hopes she has a nice time

he still listens through the grape vine (very closely) to see if he can even catch an inkling of what is going on

chucky spends prom night alone at home watching tv

(lowkey gutted that carrie really did ditch him to go to prom instead of seeing a movie with him or something)

with credit to @adordedmarigold for this idea, chucky and carrie need weird kid bonding time. some suspension of disbelief is needed because there's no way carrie's mom is letting her run free with the baddest and saddest kid in town.

on the occasions when chucky can convince carrie to cut class with him, they go to the woods on the edge of town

carrie is a little (a lot) freaked out at first

she doesnt want them to get lost

or murdered

but chucky coaxes her in and promises he knows his way around

because he's an asshole, he will tease her about being so creeped out

*cue rodrick heffley's devil worshipper woods story*

will pray on her fears

"did you hear that?"

"hear what?"

then he fucking screams in her ear or something

and does his stupid cackle when she jumps out her skin

until she uses her powers to fucking whoop his ass with a tree branch

watch him find a cool stick to carry around with him

can and will find some poor animal carcass to prod at

he is very, very interested in it

whilst carrie turns her back and tries not to throw up

he actually knows a lot about the decomposition of animals and can tell how long its been there

and can point out all the different parts and the signs of decay

"hey look at this, caz, there are already maggots in the abdominal cavity"

"chucky, if i look i'm going to be sick"

carrie better be ready because chucky can and will tell her about every single piece of flora they encounter

he knows so much about flowers and plants in general

all their properties and characteristics

(and flower symbolism !!)

carrie actually really enjoys listening to him talk about it

she remembers her (and his) favourites for future reference

chucky is in his element

(and he tries not to show it but he's v happy that carrie is willing to listen to him go on and on)

carrie picks the most common flowers to make flower crowns and daisy chains with

she makes a crown for herself first and then starts on a second one

chucky catches on "im not wearing that"

"oh don't be like that, it's fun!"

he (un)reluctantly let's her balance it on his head

just imagine these two losers walking around in the woods with matching flower crowns and chucky with his cool stick and carrie making sure her skirt doesn't catch on any of the brambles

when they decide to head home chucky either hangs his flower crown on a tree branch or (more morbidly) puts it on an animal carcass, if they have found one that day

they climb trees !!

chucky goes into Big Brother mode to teach carrie

but she actually ends up being better than him

(which he is eternally mad about because no way could a girl be better than him at something)

they sit up in the high branches and talk about all this personal shit that they can't talk about at school

(like how sometimes he gets along with his dad but other times he gets hit so hard his vision blurs)

(and how she hates it in the cupboard and the first few times she cried so much she lost her voice)

then afterwards they pretend like they didn't just bare their souls to one another

one day he gets too cocky with his climbing skills and falls

but then he doesn't hit the ground

carrie catches him with her powers

and he's dangling there like a fish on a hook

the shock of catching him almost makes her drop him again

when he is safely back in solid ground they are both just like wtf ??

lowkey makes then realise that carries powers go beyond just tripping bullies in the lunch room

they've both treated her abilities as pretty destructive but actually ?? they just saved chucky's ass

chucky is a fucking liability

"hey carrie look at the wasp nest, dare me to throw a rock at it?"

"please do not do that"

"i cant believe you're making me do this lol"

cut to them both running away as fast as possible from a swarm of angry wasps

chucky is a good Brother and takes carrie to get ice cream sometimes

she has never even had ice cream before so the whole thing is an experience

"i can pick any flavor?"

"sure, any flavor you want"

then he watches in something close to horror as she gets cookie dough ice cream (sensible) with every single topping possible (insane)

chucky is boring and gets plain vanilla becuase it is reliable

they sit together and eat and chucky had a crisis

because goddamn, does he actually like Being Nice to carrie ??

charles lee ray and carrie white friendship headcanons 2: electric boogaloo

we're back, this time with some headcanons about the less wholesome aspects of chucky and carrie's friendship. warning for some mentions of child abuse.

it's not all slow dancing to simon & garfunkel and tactfully ignoring black eyes with these two

on the whole they do get on, surprisingly, despite how polar opposite they are

their weird kid solidarity runs deep

but chucky is also a very angry and damaged person

and carrie has a lot of pent up rage that chucky both respects and (deep, deep down) fears

she never lets it out, but chucky can sense the simmering of something beneath her skin

(because its the same thing that boils over in him all. the time.)

if chucky gets beat on by his dad, the next day can go one of two ways

one, he is angry and mean and takes his hurt out on carrie

two, he is withdrawn and moody and secretly just wants carrie to talk to him so he can pretend he isn't totally worthless

usually it's the first option

charles can be cruel

he doesn't bully carrie like the other kids, but he can micro dose his cruelty on his bad days

"fuck off carrie, stop hanging off me like a lost fucking dog"

she usually leaves him be if he tells her

his scowl could curdle milk tbh

if she tries to talk to him and he's not in the mood for it, "carrie why don't you just shut your fucking trap, for once"

totally uncalled for

if he is sad rather than mad, he let's carrie talk about whatever book she has read lately without any snarky interjections

even if chucky is not currently dealing with the aftermath of his home life, he's nothing if not unstable

has major mood swings

carrie isn't always perfect either

she tries to be nice, even if her mother is being particularly strict/abusive, because that is genuinely just her nature

she doesn't have it in her to be unnecessarily cruel

usually if her mother has been particularly awful, she's very quiet the next day

if they're both lucky, their moods line up

hopefully chucky is in a good mood when she wants to be reserved so he can do all the talking

but if he's also in a bad mood (because trust the universe to have their parents beat on them on the same night) then it's a recipe for disaster

these kids can hold a grudge if they want to

they can, will and have spent weeks not speaking to each other because they fell out and both were too proud to make up

carrie really, really doesn't want to lose charles as a friend, but she also knows she can exercise some authority with him

he does not get to walk all over her when he is just as much of a loser as she is

both know they have no one else so eventually they have to make up

usually they make up by chucky sitting with carrie again at lunch and saying "how you been, caz?"

they both pretend like that is an apology and silently agree to carry on like nothing happened

chucky bunks off a lot

which annoys carrie because she is the mom friend but also because she gets lonely without him

she tries to give him the cold shoulder when he is next at school

and he does not want to admit this

if anyone ever found out he would literally never live it down

but this boy, damn he fucking grovels

"carrie, c'mon" he whispers over lunch, making sure no one is listening in while he says this "don't pull this silent treatment shit on me"

on the whole they never really fall out over things the other has done, but their moods are very dependent on outside factors

which then reflects on their current friendship status

focusing on carrie's new found abilities !! reaches her final form because she has chucky to practise on. cut added because it's a longish post, dear readers.

telekenisis !!

carrie surprisingly takes it in her stride when she realises she has abilities

despite the fear of what her mother will think

then again she is very good at hiding things that she wants to hide

library research montage

practices very simple movements which builds up her telekinetic brain muscles

her excitedly showing chucky the info she found in 'secret science behind miracles' over lunch

chucky is like "wtf is this?"

and she's like, "i can do this, i think"

she's too modest

chucky laughs at her, at first, because obviously it's all bullshit

then she throws his lunch tray on the floor without touching it

"well, fuck me" he leans back in his chair, "ain't that something"

she's secretly kind of thrilled with herself for impressing him

he totally convinces her to sneakily pull pranks on the other kids

especially the ones that give them both the hardest time

when she goes round to his house one day after school he gets her to practice moving things

she accidently knocks the crucifix off the wall

immediately apologises !! habitual due to how much her mother drills it into her that she respect jesus and the lord or else she is Going To Hell

"don't worry about it, what did he ever do for me anyway" chucky shrugs, looking down at the crucified jesus

once she starts controlling her power a lot more, it greatly benefits her if chucky crosses the line when he's in a mood

she doesn't do anything too drastic, but she'll knock over his drink if they're eating lunch or trip him in the hall

he gets annoyed by it

but is secretly impressed because !! hello !! she can move shit with her mind

even if that shit is him

okay but one time charles really fucking crosses the line

like he really just says something awful to her

and he's gonna live to regret it folks

carrie puts him in a damn telekenisis chokehold

on like 10% power

and she's just like "shut up charles >:( "

then shows mercy and let's him go

and for the only time in his whole life, he really does just shut the fuck up

she feels bad that she went that far but at the end of the day they both have a lot worse problems in their lives

he understands

and trust me, he never speaks to her like that again

his awe of carrie's power is the precursor to his interest in voodoo

(is he jealous? maybe just a little)
